Okay boys and girls. A bluebook exam question for you. What is the big excitement all about in the New York 23rd CD race that has captured the attention of the political world for the past week? I'll give you a really strong hint in the form of this observation from yesterday's Washington Post: "It is now a two-person race between Hoffman and Democrat Bill Owens with Scozzafava fading badly."
Hmm. So you would think that any recent news story about that race would have to at least include a mention of the Conservative challenger Doug Hoffman who has surged to the lead in a couple of recent polls as the Republican, Dede Scozzafava, plunged to last place. Well, in the world of the New York Daily News, Doug Hoffman doesn't even exist. At least not in this story yesterday by Elizabeth Benjamin. She writes The Daily Politics but her article appears to be The Daily Politics of an alternate universe in which the contest in the 23rd CD is strictly between Scozzafava and Democrat Bill Owens. Here is her story about New York governor David Paterson endorsing Owens and how this affects the campaigns of both the Democrat and Republican candidates but not a certain person whose candidacy dare not speak its name...at least not by Benjamin in this article:
While in the North Country to announce electricity discounts for small businesses and dairy farmers, Gov. David Paterson was asked about the NY-23 race and gave an impromptu endorsement of Democratic nominee Bill Owens.
...Owens' campaign didn't exactly alert the media about this. There was no press release trumpeting the news about Paterson's support.
Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava's campaign was overjoyed to learn the poll-challenged governor had given Owens' his official support, immediately uploading the moment to YouTube and disseminating the link to members of the media outside the district who have been following the race.
Apparently, Paterson's historically low poll numbers and the risk he'll be a drag on Owens isn't the only problem here.
According to Watertown Times reporter Jude Seymour, who has been doggedly covering every twist and turn in this race, the governor got some of his facts wrong by saying Owens had "actually helped to bring troops" to the area, which is simply flat-out not true.
As Jimmy Vielkind notes, this isn't the first time Paterson has assisted Owens, although it is the first time he has been quite so public about it.
I'm unsure what the thinking is behind having the governor in the district so close to Election Day, particularly when the Club for Growth featured him - along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi - in a TV ad earlier in the campaign.
Psst! Beth. The Club For Growth has released a recent poll showing a certain Conservative candidate surging to the lead in this race. Do you have any idea who that might be?
Benjamin concludes by mentioning Scozzafava's name again but definitely not You-Don't-Know-Who:
After the GOP lost the NY-20 special election, several observers told me they thought Assemblyman Jim Tedisco had missed an opportunity by failing to try to link his Democratic opponent, now-Rep. Scott Murphy, to the faltering Paterson.
The governor didn't campaign for Murphy, but raised money for him behind the scenes and attended his election night victory party.
Clearly, Scozzafava's consultants don't intend to make the same mistake.
Beth, I do believe it's time for you to break out of your insular cocoon. Spread your shimmering wings in the warm sunlight of the brave new political world and fly, butterfly, FLY!

The London Telegraph
October 28, 2009 - 07:20 ET by GeneralAlApparently, the London Telegraph is more informed than the local reporter! The problem is the press is playing ostrich! They have their heads buried in the sand and say there are no Conservatives out there to present any danger! Wake yup little ostriches! We're Back! Hoffman will be our catalyst!
This is an AMAZING story. I
October 28, 2009 - 08:26 ET by bse5150This is an AMAZING story. I had just been noticing that when you google 'Doug Hoffman News' over the last week or so, there's virtually nothing, or some goofy post from the Huffington Post has been pushed to the top talking about the irrevelance of Conservatives. (Note - this may have changed by this AM) But this is no accident. The Left and the MSM is in a panic over this guy. If he beats Dede, it's bad. If he beats the Democrat, it's a disaster. May I be so bold as to suggest that you go to Hoffman's site and send him a few bucks?
It's also a wake-up call
October 28, 2009 - 08:40 ET by mattmIt's also a wake-up call for RINOs and other Party-first politicos like Newt "sierra club" Gingrich. These people put Party before platform and will endorse a communist as long as there's an (R) next to the name.
It's time the establishment party insiders and the RINOs were put back in their place, making fundraising calls, distributing literature, putting up yard signs and serving coffee and donuts, while the real Republicans run for office and the Democrat infiltraters like Scuzzy, are rooted out.

Classic liberal bias
October 28, 2009 - 08:49 ET by KC MulvilleGood catch, P.J.
This theme has been developing in the last few days. The media conducts most of its distortion by not reporting a story in the first place, rather than by twisting what it does report. It's bad enough how they twist what they do say, but the bigger evil is in what they don't say at all.
This reporter reported what she saw ... and all she decided to see was the liberals in the race.
I totally agree. Bias by
October 28, 2009 - 09:21 ET by mattmI totally agree. Bias by omission is at least as much of a problem as bias bias commission.
Sometimes it's just that the liberal blinders are on, other times it's deliberate spiking of a story - like the Dirkhising murder. It's either poor journalism or outright propaganda.
I would say bias by omission is MOST of the problem

Paterson?
October 28, 2009 - 09:45 ET by slickwillie2001Governor Paterson's endorsement of Owens should cap off a great week for Hoffman. This may seal the deal for him.
Make no mistake, this is
October 28, 2009 - 11:55 ET by fitzfongMake no mistake, this is yet another example of journalistic FRAUD. Now that the media has seen the surge in momentum that Hoffman has made, they realize that ridiculing him will simply enhance his name recognition and further distinguish him as the legitimate Republican candidate. Better for their objectives to ignore Hoffman altogether in the hopes that voters go to the ballot box not knowing who he is.

I bet if you asked Charlie Gibson about Hoffman he would be "at a loss" and wouldn't "even know about it." Wait, that's what he said about the ACORN scandal a few weeks back.
