Note to Politico: If you base a story on an outdated Daily Kos poll you could end up with egg on your face. This is pretty much what has happened in the past three days.
On Saturday your humble correspondent cited a Politico story of the day before by Josh Kraushaar in which he reported on Doug Hoffman continuing to lag behind in third place in the NY 23rd CD race:
The latest poll in the New York special election shows a close race, with Democrat Bill Owens leading Republican Dede Scozzafava 35 to 30 percent, with Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman at 23 percent.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓The Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll provides some encouraging news for Scozzafava, who remains in second place – and within striking distance of Owens – despite a week of bad publicity. It shows her leading Hoffman among Republican voters, 46 to 27 percent.
So three days have passed and what happens? Dede Scozzafava plunges to third as Hoffman soars into first place according to The Club For Growth poll. And now Kraushaar is forced to change his tune:
...a new poll commissioned by the fiscally-conservative Club for Growth, which is backing Hoffman, suggests that he’s actually pulled into the lead. The poll shows Hoffman winning 31 percent of the vote, Democrat Bill Owens at 27 percent and Republican Dede Scozzafava in third with 20 percent.
This Club For Growth poll was taken on October 24-25 which was after the disastrous events for Scozzafava last week took place.
Perhaps an even stronger indication of Hoffman's surge is the fact that the campaign of Democrat Owens is now targeting him, not Scozzafava. His bizarre and childish campaign commercial has to be seen to be believed. It actually attacks Hoffman for being wealthy:
"Millionaire Doug Hoffman has a waterfront island home -- even a classic car collection."
The next shoe to drop in this campaign will probably be the Daily Kos switching its endorsement from Scozzafava whose campaign is now in free fall to Democrat Owens.
Meanwhile welcome to the Reality Zone, Politico. And do try not to rely on a far left site with an agenda for making an election analysis in the future.

Mon, 10/26/2009 - 21:39 ET by TheAssessorNewt was interesting tonight on Greta. He practically had a fit because of Hoffman. He explains that Hoffman doesn't live in the district which is technically true but not required anyway. Plus Hoffman has businesses all over the district and did live in the district till they drew new lines which puts his home 10 miles outside the 'new' district. Newt's demanding everyone vote R and that 'people from Alaska and Minnesota' should stay out of it. Geez Newt.. you're beginnig to whine like Obimao.
Assess a Penalty, Assessor!
Mon, 10/26/2009 - 22:25 ET by BlondeI watched Newt's blather.
He knows he's on the wrong side of the ball, here....he's trying desperately to catch up.
FIFTEEN YARD PENALTY, NEWT! No Presidential run for you in 2012! Newt lost me at the Global Warming Bus Stop. He's toast.
Rush's guest host made a great point today....I am NEVER, EVER going to vote for another RINO (McCain)....I think it's time for us to take our lumps....let the DEMOCRATS be democrats....they are going to own this mess. I will never again be party to a RINO....Sheesh...If I wanted to vote for a Democrat, I would. Suck on that, RINO's.
I hope he fails, too.

I hope he fails, too.

Tue, 10/27/2009 - 11:31 ET by onewiseguyJust imagine how different the election would have been if all conservatives everywhere had that attitude during the Presidential Primaries....we wouldn't have been saddled with McShame and the Republican party would have actually had a chance at winning the election. For too long, conservatives have bought into the ridiculous idea that we needed to vote for the most electable candidate....it is an attitude that has failed the Republican party badly and thankfully, some conservatives are starting to wake up to the lie. Conservatives need to vote for and support the Conservative candidate...and any candidate who deviates to a large degree from conservative ideals or who has a history of "reaching across the aisle" should be voted OUT of office.
Uh, people from Minn. And Alaska? What about Georgia?!

Loss of Party Power
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 05:24 ET by richb313Newt is upset because of the loss of Party Power. I believe anything that can cause both political paerties to lose power is a good thing. They need to loose thier clout and return to just picking candidates. Right now party power is in its zenith, much like the 1930's. Too many people just pulled the lever on who ever had the correct party affiliation. Then when these officials went to Washington they were bullied by party officials into voting along party lines. The Parties constitute a shadow governmnet with party bigwigs not facing the normal elective process. All decisions in Washington are made by first passing the will it help or hurt the party test first and the American People coming in a distant second or sometimes third.
If more people ignore party affiliations or labels when voting and just vote thier own beliefs instead we will all be better off. I hope the time comes when party affiliation will be as important as what color car you own.
Newt Sucks!
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 06:48 ET by GeneralAlNewt lost me when he pulled a Clinton on his second wife, Mary Ann! He is a phony bag of wind! He and McCrosstheAisle are finished! Hoffman is going to win and send a message to the "Rotten RINO's" that they are no longer going to set the tone of the Republican Party! When that happens, many independents, such as myself, who got left by the RINO's will return to strengthen the party and work to destroy the COMMUNIST DEMOCRAT OBAMA Party!
A Hoffman win would send a message

Mon, 10/26/2009 - 21:54 ET by ConservativeRexAnd yet, all these Republican committees keep running out these non-winnable RINO to capture the "moderates". I don't guess they'll ever learn. Newt's certainly not going to learn any time soon. This may just be the wake up call the GOP needs, and has been needing. Run Conservatives!! They'll win every time you do. If the "moderates" want to come along we'll not throw then out. However, it must be understood, the moderates are not going to call the tune for Conservatives any longer. We'll see.

Mon, 10/26/2009 - 22:03 ET by jefflebowskiNewt should stick to jet-setting around with Revrum Sharpton. He's a tool and part of the problem...not the solution! He will never be taken seriously again as a conservative...but is too vain to realize it! Remember the 3 R's - Rid Republicans of RINOs.

I have done that
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 00:28 ET by BigSpoon65I encourage everyone to put their money where their mouth is. Talk is cheap but it doesn't buy airtime to combat the attacks from the other candidates. This is a chance for conservatism to stand up and roar. Send the NRCC and the RNC a message. Ignore your base at your own peril!

180 degree turn
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 00:11 ET by TexndocMark Davis substituted for Rush today and on Dallas radio on Friday he had every Conservative within hearing distance frothing with anger because he said exactly what Newt said - we were idiots to support anything but the (R) candidate and a Hoffman vote was a throw-away vote.
Well, low and behold he does Rush's show and admits his email inbox was overflowing and he saw the anger. And he changed his mind and said he could see where people WOULD NOT CARE if the Democrat came in first over the RINO if it sent a message.
Newt has time to see the light. But his ego is enormous and he's already lying and buffering himself with his excuse "the people" "the voters" "chose her". LIAR! There was no public vote for her and he knows it, but he'll say "the locals chose her" 3 or 4 times in interviews. If Hoffman gets in he's going to use that to save his neck. It will not work.

I just got through watching the rerun of Greta's show tonight...Newt was on...do you know what the SOB did because he is so narcissist/arrogant whatever word/description you want to use here, said tonight regarding the conservatives supporting Hoffman vs his support for RINO Dede...he made sure to out Hoffman as NOT living in the district he is running in.
Please remember this...you can bet he intentionally fed the left to ensure Hoffman loses so he can say he was right and others should have listened to me and my sage advice.
I despise that man...I've tried to show somewhat respect for him over the years of seeing right through him...forget about that...he can stick it where the sun doesn't shine...and them some.
Btw...if the msm takes off on this...you can be sure the story will last far longer than it did with the congress-creature Wexler/Florida...who is a dem., ths story lasted about 12 hours.

a sample of just 300 with a margin of error of almost +/-6%. That's finger in the wind and take a guess territory.
Got a Republican survey in the mail yesterday.
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 06:15 ET by motherbeltThey want you to complete the survey and make a donation of $50-100 or more. They also say if you can't make a donation, would you please send $7 for the processing of the survey.
I did what I do with every one I get. Didn't fill out the survey. Sent it back with this written on it:
Not one dime until you stop supporting RINO's (and this time I added like Scozzafava)!
I hope the good people in NY district 23 are waking up!
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 07:53 ET by c5thenIt looks like they are and are not simply voting for who the 2 parties tell them to vote for. If conservatives accross this still great nation wake up and start doing the same thing, we actually have a chance to save this country.

Where does Hoffman live?
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 08:36 ET by BlueCat57I've been trying to track down the residency issue. From what I can tell Hoffman doesn't live in the district but he has pledged to move into the district if he wins.
Can anyone clarify this issue for me?
I guess it is something like Hillary being elected in New York after she lived there a very short time if at all.
Are the eligibility rules in New York fairly lax?
Re Residency
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 11:09 ET by slickwillie2001Hoffman used to live in NY-23, but last time the lines were redrawn he fell outside the line. Like most districts, NY-23 looks like a piece in a nightmare puzzle. He does own businesses in NY-23 and there is no residency requirement in New York. Sometimes the party in power even redraws the line to try and knock out opponents. It's all part of the gerrymandering scam. I don't see it as a big deal.
Thanks to both of you
Tue, 10/27/2009 - 18:14 ET by BlueCat57And if I don't find a job by next year's filing deadline you can look for my name on every New York state ballot. Congress pays over $100K a year and all the graft you can get away with. I don't know why more New York state homeless people don't file as candidates.
(That is probably a failed attempt at humor. Sorry.)

Tue, 10/27/2009 - 13:24 ET by HockeyKidI used to live in the district, and my mom still lives there. It's composed of 11 counties, in whole or in part, including Essex County, where Lake Placid is. (The Lake Placid where the Winter Olympics were held in '32 and '80)
Hoffman lives in Lake Placid, which is in the northwest corner of Essex County. A few years ago, the 23rd CD was redrawn from the former 24th CD to (among other changes) exclude the central third of Essex County, including Lake Placid. The 23rd now looks like a big weird M, it's so gerrymandered. So Hoffman no longer lives in the 23rd (even though he hasn't moved), but his community is surrounded by the 23rd, and he owns businesses that are in the 23rd.
Oh, and AFAIK, New York has no residency rule. Carpetbaggers welcome! ;)
