After NOW's Weak Response to 'Dumb [Vagina]' Maher Calls Palin and Bachmann Bimbos

By Noel Sheppard | March 26, 2011 | 16:20

Noel Sheppard's picture

As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, the National Organization for Women's weak response to Bill Maher referring to Sarah Palin as a highly derogatory term for a woman's vagina in no way discouraged the "Real Time" host or the television network he represents from making these sexist attacks.

Proving this point, Maher called Palin and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) bimbos on Friday's show (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER: Well, you know, a birther could be running for president. Michele Bachmann this week threw her hat into the ring kind of. We think she’s going to be running for president. For those who find Sarah Palin too intellectual.

[Laughter and applause]

MAHER: Michele Bachmann for President. As a comedian, all I have to say is where can I donate to this cause?

[Laughter and applause]

MAHER: I love this, if Bachmann and Palin get in, that’s two bimbos, and then there's Mitt Romney, a millionaire, and Newt Gingrich, a professor. We just need a skipper and a buddy – we’ve got “Gilligan’s Island.”

[Laughter and applause]

So, last week Maher called Palin a "dumb twat," and NOW responded with a statement that didn't mention him, the name of his show, or HBO. As I noted at the time, this certainly wasn't an effective admonishment for it had absolutely no impact on the comedian or the television network he represents.

Obviously, that ended up being the case, for Maher clearly wasn't given any instruction this week to tone down his sexist attacks.

For those not completely familiar with the term, bimbo when directed at a female means "an attractive but stupid young woman, especially one with loose morals."

The women at NOW should be so proud of themselves for in no way discouraging this kind of attack. In fact, one could make the case that by not mentioning Maher or HBO in their statement concerning this matter, he was de facto given their blessing as someone they're not going to admonish for sexism when it's directed at conservative women.

At the very least, it seems that's the way he took it.

As for Bachmann, I guess Maher doesn't know she holds not one but two degrees from different law schools.

This mustn't be "intellectual" enough for him.

I generally have a lot of respect for this site but I've had it with reading about Bill Maher. I have never liked him, ever, and like him much less now. Bill Maher is a pussy....period. ...not funny, not intelligent, not worth the space you give him. The best thing to do with idiots like this is to ignore them. Why give him your space? By doing so, you make me want to be here less. Celebrate Palin, not Maher!

As a commedian

Submitted by Dave81 on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 4:33pm.

"As a comedian, all I have to say is where can I donate to this cause?"

Bill Maher nailed it right there. He's a comedian (or tries to be), not a news reporter. While I do find a lot of his jabs at the right offensive and hateful, I could really care less what spews out of his mouth because he's just trying to make people laugh, and as most comedians do, he does it at the expense of others. John Stewart does the same thing. It'd be different it if came from NPR or MSNBC or one of the other media outlets that claims to be reporting unbiased news.

The only thing that really bothers me about him is how many people apparently take him seriously and look to him for political guidance...

While apologies are sometimes necessary as a measure of being civilized, I see no reason to grovel while doing so.

At the end of the day, I

Submitted by Smartypants on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 7:31pm.

At the end of the day, I don't consider anything Bill Maher says or does to be evidence of bias in the news media per se. He's a performer trying to get a laugh from his left wing audience; and like most performers today, he's just trying for the shock value. He's not that talented; he's not that witty, so the jokes come across as pretty sophomoric. Next week he'll call Palin a "pooh-pooh head" (if he hasn't already). Comparing him with Rush Limbaugh is laughable. Sure, both are essentially entertainers trying to attract and hold an audience; however, Limbaugh is lightyears ahead of Maher in his approach and abilities. (Perhaps this is why Limbaugh has an audience in the multimillions while Maher basically has his own family and the cast of "Glee" watching him.) Limbaugh is actually funny, uses tongue in cheek humor to a tee and applies cleverly placed absurdities to point out the actual absurdities of liberals and their agendas. In fact, to really understand Limbaugh's approach, one has to listen to him over an extended period of time. He cannot be taken superficially (liberals do just that every day, which is why they will never truly understand the guy, that and the fact that he is right and they are generally wrong). Meanwhile, Maher is holding his puny audience with empty invective and shallow dialog that wouldn't go over the head of a nine year old.

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 9:22pm.

I think the whole story Hillary told about  trying to get into the Marines was a lie. That was during the Vietnam War and they'd take anybody that could walk, even women.  She was ugly as homemade crap but that still didn't disqualify her.

The Army had two sizes of uniforms, too big or too small and the most beautiful shade of olive green. One size was sure to fit her.

I don't find the type of mockery of a person's physical appearance or anatomy with which Maher targeted John Boehner and Limbaugh targeted Hillary Clinton to be either funny or appropriate--regardless of politics.

With you, however, ideology trumps taste.  As long as it's a liberal being skewered, it's acceptable to you.  If a conservative is the target, you are outraged.

As one whose gaseous liberal emissions stink up a conservative site with regularity, you really are in no position to make a call about  ideology trumping taste.

When you do so, that particular emission reeks of hypocrisy, because your entire raison d'etre on NB's appears to be to counter conservative philosophy by picking nits while exclaiming
"They do it, too!"

To then complain about  how a conservative reacts is puerile in the extreme.

I saw that but I am still not

Submitted by ricklail on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 9:20pm.

I saw that but I am still not going to watch their biased news. They might find someone that is more intelligent than her but they'll still be a lefty.

Deserved Excoriation

Submitted by stratman on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 11:08pm.

Scott Pelley is another teleprompter reader who never graduated from college. He fits in nicely with Brian Williams, Peter Jennings, and Morley Safer.

Ironic how the newser types mock Sarah Palin on accomplishment and knowledge, then turn around and pay homage to authenticated half-literates who couldn't handle Intro to Hygiene at their local community college with a cheat sheet.

NOW is not about equal rights for women

Submitted by Dolphie on Sat, 03/26/2011 - 9:30pm.

NOW is worse than the mindset the founders fought against. NOW wants to force women to act, talk, think, behave a certain way and if women dare deviate they are to be punished.

If one does not think and act the way NOW dictates - then one is penalized and trashed. I consider them as bad as the muslims who beat, maim, kill, incarcerate the women who have been raped.

I am an Independent female small business owner.

NOW would have fought my success - unlike Susan B Anthony and others who would have stood beside me and championed my success/strength of character. Susan B Anthony did not require women to follow in a boxed pattern. Ms Anthony did not expect all women to view all things exactly the same.

NOW should have been all over Maher and should never have thrown politics into the mix. A woman is a woman and NOW is supposed to stand for the rights of ALL women.

Then again - they are sellouts who if they lived in the days when women were not allowed to vote - NOW would have ratted to the authorities on the very women championing women's rights.

Sickening that HBO continues to employ this guy...

Submitted by krendler on Sun, 03/27/2011 - 11:04am.

And Maher is the guy (along with a multitude of other liberals) that's constantly running around accusing others of being "racist", - not for calling Obama derogatory names - but for doing nothing more than opposing Obama's policies?

Liberals are the most sexist, racist people you'll come across in modern America society. They feel they can say whatever the hell they want, as long as the hatred is directed at a conservative.

All that Maher's behavior does

Submitted by katiejane on Sun, 03/27/2011 - 11:09am.

is open the door to sexist/racist attacks by the other side. Why should I object to offensive comments from Rush while the Left excuses the ones from their side? Whar makes racist comments anymore unacceptabel that sexist slurs?

An Alternative ...

"We just need a skipper and a buddy – we’ve got “Gilligan’s Island.”

My guess is that that would be better than "The Jeffersons".  At least on Gilligan's Island, they had leadership, some intelligence, and always a plan  - and attractive women.

We do have the skipper and Gilligan: Biden and Obama. And yes, we do have Gilligan in charge.
