Totenberg's 'Very Afraid' of These Elections; Thomas Thinks They're 'A Joke...Political System's a Mess'

By Noel Sheppard | October 30, 2010 | 11:30

NPR's Nina Totenberg said Friday that she's very afraid of the upcoming elections.

Newsweek's Evan Thomas, her co-panelist on "Inside Washington," said historians might look upon November 2, 2010 "as kind of a joke...obviously the political system’s a mess" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

GORDON PETERSON: Nina, columnist Paul Krugman says if the election goes as expected, his advice is be afraid, be very afraid. Should we take his advice?

NINA TOTENBERG, NPR: I am already afraid, very afraid. I mean, it’s not like governance has been going great. I think we’ll, I don't know whether I should be afraid, but there will be gridlock.

PETERSON: Evan, Krugman also says that future historians will probably look back at the 2010 election as a catastrophe for America. You are a historian. You agree with that?

EVAN THOMAS, NEWSWEEK: No, but they might look on it as kind of a joke. There is sort of a circus aspect to it that people, it’s become comic and a kind of a dark way. You know, Krugman is a professional doomsayer. So, you have to take that with a grain of salt. But obviously the political system’s a mess.

Isn't it amazing how these same people that were thrilled by the idea of America electing as president a junior senator from Illinois with little qualifications for the most important office in the land are now scared to death about who may be going to Congress next January?

Oozes with hypocrisy, doesn't it?

Readers are encouraged to review more absurdity from this installment of "Inside Washington" at Brent Baker's "Worried Whitman Might Win, Colorado’s Bennet ‘Deserves To,’ Chafee a ‘Voice for Reason’".

Fear?   Must be the same type

Submitted by DontTreadOnMe on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 11:40am.

Fear?   Must be the same type of fear King George and his Royal court felt back when the Tea Parties originated.

To be content with the way Obama and their ilk have run this country is akin to enjoying the stench of one's own stink.  Perhaps its like the fear of a child who doesnt want to take a bath.

How do you hide money from these liberals?

Put it under the soap.

The Perfect Political System!

Submitted by Avitar on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 1:38am.

Two years ago we had a system that let in boat loads of money in with no address or tax numbers attached and fed right into a the campaign of a freshman legislature who could  not even document his nationality and nobody verified his eligibility to serve as President.

If the choice had not been McCain people would never have stood for the election outcome.

1.  Under the Constitution, fiscal bills originate in the House of Representatives.

2.  The current Pelosi-led House has not yet passed the budget for FY 2011, and has only the lameduck session to do so.

3.  Even if the FY-1 budget is passed, next year the GOP-led House could refuse to pass an authorization bill that has NPR funding in it, thus denying it the actuall cash..

The same old song and dance

Submitted by Reaver on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 11:55am.

The same old song and dance from the left, when they can’t get liberal bills passed Washington is broken, when Democrats are loosing elections “the political system is a mess”, but when democrats win why it is a shining hallmark of democracy in action. Lather, rinse, repeat, yawn.

It still boggles my mind how thses people can be so against a grassroots wave that wants less government. How can this be unamerican?  The bad part about that is people hear this in the msm and believe it.

More freedom for everyone is a lot better then less with government involvement.

Like them I am afraid, not for the same reasons. We are headed down the wrong path and my hope is this country will correct itself.

Let's Party like it's 1773

Submitted by pbthinker on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 1:33pm.

For all these Democrats, there was no problem with 2006.  The press had a story on every day about the "culture of corruption".  Tha't all people heard about the culture of corruption, unless of course you lived in the Washington D.C. area then it was "culture of corruption" and macaca.  I don't believe I've ever seen a political party as brutalized as the Republicans were in 2006.

In 2008, it wasn't brutalization but the lack of any attention for anyone but Obama that did the trick.  Ironically, I believe this cost the media the last thread of credibility they had.

What does that mean today.  The press isn't supporting any of this.  They're on television telling us this is all a big mistake and trying to make up excuses why this is going to happen, yet it's happening anyway.

I believe this is happening precisely because of 2006 and 2008.  The press has lost so much credibility that, even when they tell everyone the polls show candidates up, people don't believe them and a week or so later, they're not up any more.

I'm enthused.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

A joke?

Submitted by Galvanic on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 2:05pm.

First, Thomas is not a historian -- he is a journalist and author.

Second, historians do not evaluate any event without context.  Any historian looking at this election would not only examine all that tranpsired before the election, but all that transpired after it.  Only then can one understand its roots and its impact.

If this election is a joke, then the joke is on Evan Thomas.

Like many on this site, I'm hoping that this election marks the beginning of a major turning point in our nation.

Afraid? Can Totenberg say she's afraid of a certain group of people at a particular place that don't look or act or dress like her? I thought Juan Williams (who said he is afraid of muslims (a group of people) acting very religous borading planes dressed in Muslim garb.

Totenberg is afraid of clean-shaven conservatives dressed in causal attire going to voting booths and acting like --- well, voters.

If this isn't a firing offense, then neither was Juan Williams' statement.

My guess is, if history really looks back at this period, they will wonder what took Republicans so long defunding NPR.  Why would any government fund an organization designed to divide the country along liberal and conservative lines.  Anytime you're out there saying Democrats good, Republicans bad, you're dividing the country.  It's one thing for politicians to do it, it's quite another for a government sponsored entitiy to do it.

I'll be glad when they pull the funding and just let it become George Soros's Public Radio Network, at least there will be some honesty in the label.  Before they defund it, they should get some conservatives in there to supervise that place so we can bring some sanity to it.

How moronic. The reality is

Submitted by Student1776 on Sat, 10/30/2010 - 7:33pm.

How moronic. The reality is that Obama campaigned as a moderate but governed as a socialist. His actions were so very severe, so extreme that he woke up the American people and they are now throwing up on him. Correctly so. The reality for all the NPR people and Krugman and the liberal extremist, find anathema any action that is opposed to collectivism or statism, everything that seeks to support the values of classical liberalism - small frugal limited government, low taxation, free enterprise and respect for individual Americans and their right to make the important decisions about their own lives. NPR, the PRAVDA for the Democrat National Committee should be de-funded. The Healthcare program should be repealed or defunded, and America should return to supporting the capitalism that made us the wealthiest of nations.

Totenberg is a thoroughly mediocre, party-line liberal who can be counted on to spew the spin of the moment without the requirement for facts, logic or thought to back it up.

Basic economics and the enemy:

Submitted by Superpower on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 11:29am.

If you understand and oppose what this autocrat ruler/president is doing to the nation economically, then you are considered "enemies" according the president. Never before in the history of this nation has a president referred to the people he was elected to represent as "enemies" until now, until Barrack Obama did so last week. You see what inexperience combined with arrogance can do?

The Democrats have neither

Submitted by Student1776 on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 4:30pm.

The Democrats have neither facts nor logic to support their position. So all they can do is to call people names, to engage in campaigns of vilification. Sort of like Mean Girls in high school. Except many of them are (nominally) men - girly men to be sure. Soon to be unemployed girly men.

What exactly are they scared of?

Have we really fallen so far in this country that returning to our founding principles is considered "extreme"? Founding principles? Smaller government? Less spending? Obama tripled the debt in two years. At this point, gridlock would be a welcome "change we could believe in."

When will Ameircns learn?

Submitted by Ruler4You on Sun, 10/31/2010 - 7:33pm.

More and more frequently Americans hear elitists, such as these two, who have contempt for them (Americans).

Now, I don't know about you, and I don't claim to, but when people who don't know about me either, assume they have some special ability to determine what's best for me or attempt to marginalize me because 'I'm not as smart as they are' I become a bit agitated.

I'm losing patience for the many, many mouthpieces, pundits and out right admited propagandists who have taken this stance with MY basic Rights to chose my government. These are socialist tactics, not the tactics of Freedom loving Americans.

When are Americans going to take offense with such elitism and stand up?
