Worried Whitman Might Win, Colorado’s Bennet ‘Deserves To,’ Chafee a ‘Voice for Reason’
This weekend’s Inside Washington put on full display the liberal sensibilities of the Washington press corps as Newsweek veteran Evan Thomas yearned for a win in Colorado for incumbent Democratic Senator Michael Bennet, “a good guy,” wishing “sometimes justice does triumph,” and former Wall Street Journal reporter Jeanne Cummings, now with Politico, was upset Republican Meg Whitman might win the California gubernatorial race: “She’s built a turn-out operation of her own and it worries me.”
Thomas soon hailed Lincoln Chafee, the ex-Republican who campaigned for Barack Obama in 2008 and is now an independent candidate for Governor in Rhode Island, as “a tiny little ray of hope” since he’s the kind of “liberal Republican” which “did the Republican Party a lot of good.” Despite the fact he abandoned the GOP, Thomas trumpeted him as “a voice for reason in the Republican Party.”

He was, himself, swept out of office. Now he’s coming back now maybe because as Jeanne says, Rhode Island’s a funny state, small state and they all remember the Chafees and they know what a great family it is. But still, he is a voice for reason in the Republican Party.”

Actually Whitman may lose BECAUSE she isn't a real conservative!
If she were not running as a corporate spokeshole and actually had some internalized passion, and was able to demonstrate through her actions that she was a conservative, and finally, did not put out so many two-faced political messages, she would EASILY be winning in California. But because of all that relative evasiveness, combined with Jerry Browns huge advantage in government BS spin ability, this race shouldn't even be close.
It is easy to buy a primary, but it is much harder to buy an election ("buy" as in saturate the election with your own money). It is Meg's actions and arrogance that is making her lose in an election cycle where the conservative right will not STAND for such arrogance, and that the liberal left is looking for ANY hooks to blast the conservative.
Sadly, Whitman's performance may affect conservative turnout, which will then affect Carly Fionna's race against Barbara Boxer in the senate race, along with dozens of House races. Ultimately, Whitman's arrogance and 150 million dollar contribution to her election fund may cost this country upwards of a trillion dollars, and maybe far more.

There was a time when I enjoyed pundit shows, because I'm interested in public affairs. But that pleasure has long since passed, because the "experts" discussing public affairs are journalists.
Imagine a handful of dentists sitting around a table, discussing public affairs. Would they be entertaining, and offer interesting insights? Sure. Dentists are well-educated people, and they probably have a few personalities who could make it on TV. How about college professors, or physicists, or poets, or cellists from the symphony? Sure.
But the only profession represented on shows that discuss public affairs is ... journalists. Why? Is it because of their superior intelligence? (Cough, hack, spew) Is it because journalists have well-trained skills in spotting the secret truths of life?
No. It's because they run the TV station.
Knowing what the public events are is different from knowing what they mean. The meaning of events depends on a lot more than the facts of any particular story. Knowing the facts is different from knowing the meaning. A lot of people can name Romeo's partner, but of those, how many can competently discuss what Shakespeare meant by the play?
It's the ultimate misplaced premise. Yes, it's true that to know the meaning, you must know the "facts." But no, it's not true that knowing the facts proves you know the meaning.
