Global Warming Update: 'Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age'

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

As Democrats and their president-elect -- with invaluable assistance from their media minions -- continue spreading climate hysteria in order to raise taxes and redistribute wealth, a possibly inconvenient truth has just been presented to the international community: "The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science."

Additionally, the entire bogus manmade global warming theory that climate alarmists and their surrogates have been forcing down the throats of the citizenry "is based on data that is drawn from a ridiculously narrow span of time and it demonstrates a wanton disregard for the ‘big picture’ of long-term climate change."

Such was reported by Russia's Pravda Sunday, and it not only goes quite counter to the junk science being espoused by folks like Nobel Laureate Al Gore and his accomplices James Hansen and Gavin Schmidt, but it has also been regularly proffered by many of the real scientists and climatologists around the world that global warming loving media not only refuse to cite and/or interview, but also disgracefully ridicule as deniers and flat earthers.

According to Pravda, it is Gore, Hansen, Schmidt, and all their sycophant devotees that are the flat earthers who are distracting the world from a much more serious climate threat (emphasis added throughout):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.

Ice cores, ocean sediment cores, the geologic record, and studies of ancient plant and animal populations all demonstrate a regular cyclic pattern of Ice Age glacial maximums which each last about 100,000 years, separated by intervening warm interglacials, each lasting about 12,000 years.

Sounds much like what the realist side has been saying for years, doesn't it? But it gets better:

During the 1970s the famous American astronomer Carl Sagan and other scientists began promoting the theory that ‘greenhouse gasses’ such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, produced by human industries could lead to catastrophic global warming. Since the 1970s the theory of ‘anthropogenic global warming’ (AGW) has gradually become accepted as fact by most of the academic establishment, and their acceptance of AGW has inspired a global movement to encourage governments to make pivotal changes to prevent the worsening of AGW.

The central piece of evidence that is cited in support of the AGW theory is the famous ‘hockey stick’ graph which was presented by Al Gore in his 2006 film “An Inconvenient Truth.” The ‘hockey stick’ graph shows an acute upward spike in global temperatures which began during the 1970s and continued through the winter of 2006/07. However, this warming trend was interrupted when the winter of 2007/8 delivered the deepest snow cover to the Northern Hemisphere since 1966 and the coldest temperatures since 2001. It now appears that the current Northern Hemisphere winter of 2008/09 will probably equal or surpass the winter of 2007/08 for both snow depth and cold temperatures.

The main flaw in the AGW theory is that its proponents focus on evidence from only the past one thousand years at most, while ignoring the evidence from the past million years -- evidence which is essential for a true understanding of climatology. The data from paleoclimatology provides us with an alternative and more credible explanation for the recent global temperature spike, based on the natural cycle of Ice Age maximums and interglacials.

Sounds exactly like what the realists claim, and have been claiming, correct? But there's more:

The reason that global CO2 levels rise and fall in response to the global temperature is because cold water is capable of retaining more CO2 than warm water. That is why carbonated beverages loose [sic] their carbonation, or CO2, when stored in a warm environment. We store our carbonated soft drinks, wine, and beer in a cool place to prevent them from loosing their ‘fizz’, which is a feature of their carbonation, or CO2 content. The earth is currently warming as a result of the natural Ice Age cycle, and as the oceans get warmer, they release increasing amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Because the release of CO2 by the warming oceans lags behind the changes in the earth’s temperature, we should expect to see global CO2 levels continue to rise for another eight hundred years after the end of the earth’s current Interglacial warm period. We should already be eight hundred years into the coming Ice Age before global CO2 levels begin to drop in response to the increased chilling of the world’s oceans.

The Vostok ice core data graph reveals that global CO2 levels regularly rose and fell in a direct response to the natural cycle of Ice Age minimums and maximums during the past four hundred and twenty thousand years. Within that natural cycle, about every 110,000 years global temperatures, followed by global CO2 levels, have peaked at approximately the same levels which they are at today.

The conclusion:

The AGW theory is based on data that is drawn from a ridiculously narrow span of time and it demonstrates a wanton disregard for the ‘big picture’ of long-term climate change. The data from paleoclimatology, including ice cores, sea sediments, geology, paleobotany and zoology, indicate that we are on the verge of entering another Ice Age, and the data also shows that severe and lasting climate change can occur within only a few years. While concern over the dubious threat of Anthropogenic Global Warming continues to distract the attention of people throughout the world, the very real threat of the approaching and inevitable Ice Age, which will render large parts of the Northern Hemisphere uninhabitable, is being foolishly ignored.

For what it's worth, Accuweather's Joe Bastardi told Glenn Beck last Tuesday that Russia's Vladimir Putin may have cut supplies of gas from the Ukraine to Europe because he believes the globe is about to go into a cooling phase, and controlling natural gas will give his country a great deal of added power on that continent.

Maybe Putin was aware of this article about to be published by Pravda?

Regardless, it's going to be very interesting to see how much this report gets covered here in America where our media, regardless of how cold it is or how cold it might get, still believe Al Gore.

Stay tuned.

Post facto thought-provoker: the climate alarmists regularly proffer that America and the world, regardless of whether or not AGW theory becomes prophecy, should prepare for that possibility. Not doing so in their view would be foolish.

Well, what if the realists who believe we're entering another serious cooling phase are right? Wouldn't it be foolish for us not to prepare for that outcome?

After all, as most American residences and structures were built during the recent warming phase, they're not prepared for significantly colder temperatures. Neither is our current electricity grid or our supply of natural gas and heating oil.

Also, it is MUCH easier to deal with warmer temperatures than cooler ones. Maybe more important, a lot more people die from the cold than the heat.

As such, using the alarmist argument that it's foolish not to prepare for a possible outcome, and given the greater consequences involved in a global cooling, shouldn't we be allocating more resources and energy to preparing for it?

How might we accomplish this? Well, with the economy in a serious recession, and Congress considering a stimulus package, how about one that offers tax credits to individuals and businesses that upgrade their heating systems, improve insulation, and install double-pane windows?

Such purchases would not only prepare the nation for a possible cooling, but also fuel the economy and create jobs.

While we're at it, as we're going to need more heating oil, maybe we should fast-track the licensing of new refinery construction so that the inventory of such will be on the upswing thereby reducing the likelihood of price spikes from future supply constraints. Such construction would also create jobs.

Of course, if we are going to need more heating oil, we should remove the current impediments to exploration and drilling both offshore and in the nation's oil shale-rich interior.

Without question, if Pravda and the hundreds of climate realists predicting a cooling are right, America needs to prepare for it. Given the current state of our economy, proactive solutions should be looked at as sound investments in our nation's future with the ancillary benefit of much-needed job creation.

Or is this too logical for global warming-obsessed politicians and media?

*****Update: NBer robertinseattle accurately pointed out in the comments section that the author of this Pravda piece has some interesting views about 9/11 that would make Rosie O'Donnell proud. In fact, Gregory F. Fegel, although being an American, doesn't care for his homeland much as depicted in his blogs here and here

How delicious that an America-hating Truther who contributes to Pravda has a firmer grasp of climatology than Nobel Laureate Al Gore, James Hansen, Gavin Schmidt, and most of the folks at the IPCC.

Now THAT'S entertainment!!!

I wonder how President elect the "Holly vagueness Barrack Hussein Obama" is going to react to the call of the Alarmists when everything that they believe in is turning out to be wrong?

All things do indeed

All things do indeed change. The pendulum has swung sharply the other way hasn't it.

I've been saying this for a

I've been saying this for a long time, if you want clear perspective read Pravda and The People's Daily.  At least when they do their propaganda, it's obvious and easily discounted.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Ok, so what I want to know

Ok, so what I want to know is, who's going to confront the new adminstration with this alternative point of view?

(Be right back- going outside to spray something in the air...)

Back... We see almost daily that Obama wants to spend tons of Monopoly money on "green projects" and the MSM nods in absolute agreement. Will anyone ever ask the question, "But what about the growing number of scientists that oppose the man-made global warming alarmists? Given the state of the economy, wouldn't it be prudent to listen to these voices?"

(Found another spray can- be right back...)

Phew- cold out there...

Where was I? Oh yeah... There is ample evidence of a cooling global climate and yet Al Gore is the only voice listened to? Even HuffPo inadvertently posted a vastly contradicting opinion piece.

("Hey hon? You need that new can of hairspray?)

I will

If the current solar conditions continue, and most scientists think they will, it will soon be so cold, the snow piled so high, the glaciers growing so quick and the sea ice getting so thick, that soon everyone but Al Gore will know Al gore is a kook.

And the beauty, you don't have to do nothing, the liberals can do nothing, the sun will handle the details.

The sun went quiet in Oct 2005 for reasons no one understands and has remained quiet since. The space weather prediction center has the details http://www.swpc.noaa.... I caution is a governmental site, stick with just the facts. Another good sun monitor site is here http://solarcycle24.... it uses the same data but has some really cool displays made with the data.

Did you ever wonder, how paying more in taxes to the government, so government scientists can pretend to control the weather actually does anything?

If you are interested in the real history of Earth's climate, I suggest you watch Prof Bob Carter's lecture series on youtube. He is very good and the lecture is amusing. Here is part one of a four part series http://www.youtube.c...

Funny, I used to compare The NYT to the old Pravda...

They were the same thing; run by and for a single political party. Somehow Pravda has more credibility in my mind than the NYT now... Of course that's damning Pravda with faint praise ;-)

Great job, Noel, following up on this.  It seems the Russians will be prepared for whatever climate change occurs while we will be worrying about cows farting and google searches.  What lunacy!

S. Fred Singer and Dennis T. Avery, in their book, "Unstoppable Global Warming..." discuss the real reason the earth is warming and why it's nothing to divert vast amounts of national wealth combatting (from Conservative Book Club review):

...earth’s current warming trend is a largely natural occurrence that we can’t do anything to stop – and which is not only harmless, but potentially beneficial...the 1,500-year solar-driven cycle has always controlled the earth’s climate, and remains the driving force in the current warming trend. As a result, trillions of dollars spent on reducing fossil fuel use would have no effect on today’s rising temperatures – and the public policy key is adaptation, not fruitless attempts at prevention. Further, they offer convincing evidence that civilization’s most successful eras have coincided with the cycle’s warmest peaks. With the added benefit of modern technology, humanity can not only survive global climate change, but thrive.

As this graph (x-axis=Thousands of Years Before Present Time; y-axis=Change in Temperature(C)) shows, we are in a probable small window(10,000 to 20,000 years) between ice ages(90,000 to 100,000 years).  One of the fascinating theories Singer and Avery discuss is from work by Jan Veizer and Nir Shaviv:

...reconstructed the Earth's temperature record for the last 500 million years...find a major global warming-cooling cycle every 135 million years, a time period that coincides with no earthly phenomenon...cosmic rays striking the Earth cycle up and down over 135 million years as our solar system passes through one of the bright arms of the Milky Way.  The Milky Way arms have intense levels of cosmic rays that tend to cool the Earth by stimulating the formation of those low-level clouds that reflect solar radiance back into space. (my emphasis throughout)

..."empirical observations on all time scales point to celestial phenomena as the principal driver of climate...with greenhouse gases acting only as potential amplifiers. ...  The tiny carbon cycle is piggybacking on the huge water cycle (clouds included), not driving it."

They also spend considerable time and voluminous references (they stated that they could have doubled the reference base, but needed to save space) on their main theme of an approximate 1500 year cycle of warming and cooling:

The Earth continually warms and cools.  The cycle is undeniable, ancient, often abrupt, and global.  It is also unstoppable...The cycle shifts have occurred roughly on schedule whether CO2 levels were high or low.  Based on this, the Earth is about 150 years into a moderate Modern Warming that will last for centuries longer.  It will essentially restore the fine climate of the Medieval Climate Optimum.

They make the point that the Little Ice Age lasted from about 1300 to 1850, so just over 150 years later, we are in a general warming trend.  This warming trend is similar to the Medieval Warming that lasted from about 900 to 1300.

Singer and Avery conclude:

The warming phase of the 1500-year climate cycle will bring some moderate changes in global temperatures.  Summer temperatures will rise, on average, only slightly.  Winter nights will be less cold in the temperate zones, but most people will still need their furnaces...

Some years from now a future generation...may look back on this episode...as a temporary hysteria...By then, fossil fuels may be mostly depleted, with the cost of energy held in bounds thanks to nuclear power or the development of still-unforeseen energy technologies.

The chief worry then is likely to be the coming Ice Age still looming as our mild interglacial period draws toward a close.  The watchwords will then, more than ever, be "insulate," "adapt," and "grow more food on less land," to leave more room for the people and wildlife pushed toward the equator by the mile-thick ice sheets advancing through Chicago

My math:  1300 + 1500 (give or take 500 years)= 2800.  So, by the 1500 year cycle theory, we've got a bit of nice warm weather left yet (at least 300 years).  The only thing Algore and cronies can do about it is separate foolish men and governments from their money and principles.  There will almost surely be little dips in the general direction of the warming trend.  So the question becomes, will we have global warming or cooling in the future?  The answer is...Yes!!!

Go back and look at that graph.  We are currently about 10,000 years into the current inter-glacial period.  When it decides to drop into the next ice age, the change will probably be abrupt.  The 1500 year cycle will just adjust down, and operate with those mile deep glaciers laying over Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, maybe New York City?  So, are we going to be able to adapt when the inevitable cooldown comes, whether sooner, as the Russians seem to be betting on, or later, as the 1500-year cycle theory predicts.  Or are we still going to be concerned with cow farts and google searches while paying through the nose to charlatans that claim to be able to solve the "warming problem" by raping us over and over.

"The future is not set.  There is no fate but what we make for ourselves."

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is Not Pollution

Whoa!

I think we have consensus, global warming is over.

"The future is not set.  There is no fate but what we make for ourselves."

PT,

Regarding that quote on the page you link to with your tag-link (your own page, I gather?), "it’s the product of all plant respiration," I think there's a problem with that. If I remember my HS biology, plants inhale CO2 and exhale oxygen, correct? So, while CO2 is necessary for plant respiration, vital to it in fact, I don't think it qualifies as a "product." But, that's a quibble at best. The point is taken.

It's occurred to me recently that we're very lucky plant life here isn't sentient, and hasn't declared their own exhalations to be "pollution." Otherwise, we'd be faced with a drive to decrease oxygen on our planet, and I think we'd have a bit of a problem with that, no?   ;^)

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..." - The Who

Photosynthesis vs. Photorespiration

Photorespiration is a process where plants release CO2, however the net amount that they capture and then release as oxygen via Photosynthesis far outweighs this. The other important point is that with increased temperatures their level of Photorespiration adjusts downward.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is Not Pollution

Just wondering

Is the "Messiah" going to include any references to AGW while he's freezing his butt off at the inauguraton? Is it ok for me and the cows to break wind again?

jb

jb,

Supposed to be amazingly cold in DC Inauguration Day. If this forecast holds true, wouldn't it be delicious to have Obama mention global warming in front of a freezing crowd?

I'm praying for the coldest Inauguration Day in history...how 'bout you?  ns

It would be the epitome of

It would be the epitome of the Gore effect if it snowed 6 to 12 inches on that day, 20F temps would be a close 2nd. ...But alas, it would be blamed on Global Warming given the cultish nature of their rabid belief system.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Noel

The report I looked at said that the 21st is expecting wintery mix in DC. I am hoping they are off a day, as they frequently are. Remember, no umbrellas allowed at the inauguration!! Now that will be great! Finally, a reason to tune in!

"Not the cows please"

Not to worry.

I am in the final design stages of a two-wheel methane converter (to water and some other weird stuff) that can be attached to the rear outlet of a cow and which the cow can easily pull along.

This device will allow a cow to process its ingested food with no fear of increasing the temperature of the earth.

As an added treat for the kids, the exhaust from my new device will be attached to a small, but very nice sounding calliope. Thus, one can rent one's cow at any public function and make a little money, as well as bring joy to the hearts of all children.

American ingenuity at work.

For liberal Democrats and the Old Media, everything is crisis, chaos, calamity and catastrophe. That justifies stealing your property and liberties.

Good evening celator

There was a picture of one in argentina on this site but it was a cumbersome thing on the cow's back. Very unworkable.

The caliope idea sounds great. The proper pronounciation, incidentally rhymes with cantalope. There were still a couple of them downhere on the river boats when I was young.

You seem to have solved our fresh water, fertilizer, fresh air, rntertainment and global warming problems in one shot.

A nobull peace prize awaits you

He he, I will wear the

He he, I will wear the nobull prize with great honor everywhere I go (if I should be fortunate enough to win it.) Please vote for me if you are on the committee. There's money in it for your vote.

It may not solve the methane problem

It may not solve the methane problem though, Algore will still be on the loose.

The Duality of Things

Good cover piece for that Pravda article and its numerous citations. The only bad thing was the fact that some friends countered with an earlier piece by Pravda's Fegel which came off sounding like it was written by a lunatic conspiracy theorist:

http://english.pravd...

We can only hope that Al Gore & Co. will be disproven soundly over the next couple of years not only by facts but by actual events as they happen around us. But I don't think they give refunds on Nobel prizes. Unfortunately, Gore and the Global Warming - er, Global Climate Change - idiots have already started to re-spin their agenda by re-naming the probem to be all-inclusive. So now they can never be wrong in any argument. It it's too cold - why it's GCC! Too hot in your part of the world? Blame it on GCC! Don't argue with me.

It looks like Gore has finally found something that's better than being President of the US because he's always right. Why do you think he turned down Obama's offer to serve on his administration?

Meanwhile, Back at Credibility Gap....

Gregory F. Fegel, the writer of the Prava article, is an interesting fellow, all right. A bit of Googling would have uncovered the fact that he is an American who lists his educational attainments at another website (http://gregoryfegel....) as "Clackamas Community College (1986)." Nothing against the worthy role of community colleges, but let's just say that such a background does not lend credibility to his effort to refute mainstream climate science.

And yes, this is presumably the same Gregory F. Fegel who wrote the article you linked: "Impeachment is Not Enough." Note that among other things, that piece alleges 9/11 was an inside job that "provided the excuse for the US government's 'War on Terrorism....'"

Again, not the sort of person whose opinions inspire confidence.

You mean like someone with

You mean like someone with a BS in physics and math,  U of Iowa; MS Astronomy, U of Iowa; and PhD, Physics U of Iowa; lecturing the world on climate. After he screwed up the records by just copying the prior months tempertures. Telling others with PhD's in Geology, Climate, Physics, and assorted related fields, that the debate that never happened is over.

Or better yet someone who took two college level science courses. Getting a D in one and either a C or B in the other. Claiming to be an expert on climate.

Fegel is practicing an art

Fegel is practicing an art that seems quite lost here in America, Journalism, at Pravda no less.

He is not a scientist and he makes no such claims in his report.  He, like his counterparts published in the MSM here, does not identify all of his sources in his article.  That I find fault with.  Being very familiar with the scientific literature available, I can guess who the unnamed sources are, but that is an exercise that should not be left to the reader.

You don't have a thing to say about the truthfulness or accuracy of any of his content.  Your entire attack on the article is ad hominem.

That is all your post deserves.

Wha DOES happen when this falls apart?

The liberals are invested in this, right up to their eyeballs, and they simply can't afford to have this fall apart. The American media has been the worst at providing any alternative points of view on AGW.  How to they suddenly have an Emily Litella moment and say, "Never mind." after being a major part of a movement that has caused us, as a society, to waste billions of dollars?

Look at all the wasted effort we've put forth, to cut CO2 emissions.  We've raised the price of corn so our Mexican brothers are having a hard time affording flour for their tortillas.  We've polluted water supplies, with the MTB's we added to gas so it would burn cleaner.  We're forcing the public to buy light bulbs, that they won't buy in a free and open market and that have mercury in them.  Now, we have Democrats, in Congress, that believe they've found the Holy Grail of taxes, in the Carbon Tax, where they can say it's worth what they say it is and is emitted by who they say it's emitted by.  No wonder they didn't want to work with President Bush to deal with Social Security, they believe they can tax us out of this problem.

Now, what if it all falls apart, just before they are allowed to tax us all into oblivion?  I say people will no longer trust the press.  Al Gore should be brought up on charges, and the Democrats won't win another election in my children's lifetime.  Not because they were wrong, people are wrong all the time; but because they savaged people trying to point of the flaws in their theories and politicized an issue that should have been left to the scientific community to resolve and then let politicians deal with it.

I've always felt this was like the Butter/Margarine argument.  What if, when they initially said butter was bad and clogging up our arteries, Congress had banned its production and sale. Can anyone imagine where we would be now?  The point is that this has gone back and forth for 30 years.  I do believe butter is good again, as are eggs, but I could be wrong, it changes so often.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

Since the 1970s there's been talk about a coming Ice Age

Whether it's a "little ice age" such as experienced from the early 1200s to the middle of the 1800s, or a full ice pack expansion that has not been seen since the late glacial period ended more than 8,000 years ago; it's not determined.

Throughout all the "hyped-up" Al Gore religion of human caused global warming, there were very serious scientists that were trying to educate us about the coming climatic changes.  These are more due to Solar activity, than any localized "heating" due to pavement and building solar heat retention.

Cold is a greater killer than heat.

See this goes back to the 1970's, they said then that we were heading into an Ice Age, and I did everything I could to heat the Earth up.

Do I get any thanks for keeping us out of an Ice Age as long as I have?  NO!  All  I hear is global warming this, global warming that!  Well, I've done all I can do, now everyone is going to freeze. Great.
