Intellectual Property Rights Stripped to Stop Global Warming?

Capitalist democracies around the world should be very concerned about the level of socialism being discussed at the United Nations' climate change meeting in Bali.

Not only are international hands being extended to collect funds from countries like the United States in order to help poorer nations deal with a problem that might actually be disappearing since global temperatures peaked in 1998, but climate change is also being used as a means of stripping intellectual property rights from companies that have created new more eco-friendly energy technologies.

If such a power-grab for the so-called benefit of the downtrodden actually comes to pass, capitalism as we know it will cease to exist.

Think that might be a little alarmist? Feast your eyes on the following report from Bali by the Associated Press Wednesday under the headline "Poor Nations Demand Climate Technology" (emphasis added throughout):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Developing nations at the U.N. Climate Change Conference demanded rapid transfers of technology Wednesday to help them combat global warming, while a report warned that some of Asia's biggest cities could be threatened by rising sea levels.

[...]

Delegates and activists led by the Group of 77, which represents 132 mainly developing countries and China, said barriers such as intellectual property rights and a lack of a sense of urgency among rich countries are slowing the transfer of needed technology.

See where this is going, folks? The hysteria about a problem that doesn't exist is being used by countries like China to extort energy technology from, let's face it, us.

Think the media will be reporting this any time soon?

While you ponder, Jane Spencer and Tom Wright of the Wall Street Journal elaborated Thursday on the truly frightening nature of these discussions (emphasis added throughout):

But the idea is generating tensions with U.S. officials, because American companies don't want to sell this new technology at cut-rate prices. The officials also worry that innovative technologies could be illegally copied if they are deployed in China.

China steal American technology and illegally copy it for resale around the planet? No, they'd never do that:

But Zou Ji, a member of China's delegation who specializes in clean-energy-technology issues, said in an interview he would introduce a proposal during the meeting that would set up a body under the United Nations to promote the transfer of renewable-energy technology to poorer nations.

He will also propose that the U.N. body manage a fund that would help finance the spread of new, clean-power technologies. The fund also would support research on clean-energy technology and could acquire intellectual-property rights related to clean power.

"We are dealing with something related to public good," Mr. Zou said. "It's a trade-off between intellectual-property rights and climate protection."

Picture becoming clearer? In order to save the planet from the bogeyman these folks helped create and instill fear of, American companies that conceivably have been working for years to develop new energy technologies must forfeit their rights to such valuable property.

Just imagine where America's green media will be on this trade-off.

Of course, the real fear lovers of democracy and capitalism should be feeling is what this precedent will do, and how it could be exploited in the future for any piece of intellectual property. All one needs do is identify a moral imperative for undeveloped nations or the poor to possess a thing, then appeal to the international community to do so, and voila.

Once this socialism ball gets rolling, what's to prevent it from encompassing virtually any product or service deemed necessary for someone's survival?

Welcome to the new age of eco-socialism, folks. Hope you enjoy the ride.

Jason Lewis was all over this

They can't defeat us militarily and they can't seem to get us stubborn capitalists to accept a socialist regime, so they're using global warming as the boogeyman to scare Americans into sharing the wealth.

Like McCarthy standing up to the Communists, I pray America has enough gutsy people to stop this at our doorstep. If we fall to socialism, the planet will be a very different place and not for the better.

Gutsy people?

We neede educated aware people. The establishment that wants one world governmane is trying the same old trick.

Rock the boat and then convince all the occumants tye are the only ones who can save them from drowning.

People nowadays would rather give up their rights to be kept safe and comforatble that investigate and find the truth.

Ben Franklin had an opinion on that:

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I object...

China steal American technology and illegally copy it for resale around the planet? No, they'd never do that:

I object Noel, the Clintons will just hand it over like they did our nuclear secrets.

Who said...

Who said socialism was dead when the Berlin Wall came tumbling down?  We are sick and tired Sick-n-Tired, but what must we do?

I have a solution to their problem

I have a solution to their problem, I will offer carbon credits. It is a win-win with them being forgiven and no need for any new technology and me becoming rich.

The end of the world

We will find that innovation in the United States will grind to a  halt when we have to share our accomplishments for no recompense.

Hey, there are some days when one is better off playing golf than working. I'm starting to believe that maybe a year off from helping the rest of the world might put us in a better place. I wouldn't mind spending a little extra time on my short game while people who hate us are starving to death. But, maybe that's just me.

Counter Proposal of the Bush, Sarkozy and Brown governments

Dear Honorable Thieving Chinese Communist,

We have read your proposal of socialized theft of Western protected patented technologies to empower your communist regime without benefit to the free peoples who created and own these technologies and instead offer this.

China with it's billions in surplus currency is not "poor". You purchase said technology and lease said technology.

Secondly, the NATO powers will on condition that communist China and Russia reign in their Islamocommunist thugs, will send in investment corporations to dam the rampaging rivers of all the "stans". These cooperatives will then sell electricity to China and other Asian nations with surplus funds whereby for example Afghanistan will then recieve 49% dividends for said power and the investors 51% as they ventured the investment for a return.

Thirdly, the west has done more to develop China taking it from the dirt pile of dung it was into a modern age. China has instead like Russia not invested in bettering their people's moral and social well being, but instead spent billions on advanced weapons systems threatening all other nations.
The West therefore proposes that China and Russia INVEST THEIR BILLIONS BEING SPENT ON WARFARE INTO THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL FUND TO AID IN PROJECTS TO DEVELOP POWER SOURCES IN 3rd WORLD STATES.

It is past time our Chicom friends that you get the point that you are not as bright as you think you are in long term plans, but are quite childish and if you want to be treated as an adult playing in the world with a seat at the table you will bring forth real proposals and agree to the ones listed above as your statements are pure ignorance and a literal attack on the west.

Didn't BlindSight argue against individual property rights?

....calling them one of the causes of Global Warming?

Just like that, this call to appropriate intellectual property rights fits right into the Socialist/Marxist scheme that is Kyoto.

True Costs

Noel:

You nailed it.  It is why I got involved in fighting this load of crap called AGW.  It is one thing to toss/waste billions on dollars on the IPCC, etc. but it is a whole other story when they start to crap like Kyoto down our throats.  The cost ends up in the trillions.  But this is exactly where it would go.  Personal property rights is one of the foundations of western success.  The lack of personal property rights is a significant factor in why 3rd world counties are, well, 3rd world.  Western societies are the cleanest societies on earth, bar none.  Others don't even come close.  If our respective gov't institutions end up legislating CO2 as a pollutant, look out.  The control on our lives will be unprecedented.  The attack on our personal freedoms and wealth by this junk will do no less damage than communism, because that is essentially what it is. In addition, that money intellectual capital is completely wasted and does not go towards solving REAL environmental problems such as the treatment of human waste, malaria, etc.  (Note: I'm not saying people on the pro AGW side actually have intellect.  I'm saying people on the anti - AGW side must waste effort battling crap instead of being pro-active on solutions).  It also lends support to other people wanting to promote future personal agendas under the guise of falsehoods.  (Should have sent Rachel Carson to trash heap from the beginning.  May not be putting up with this crap if we had).  The proof that this is all a load of political crap is Kyoto itself.  If the environmental groups truly believe this crap and were truly worried about Gaia, they sure wouldn't be supporting Kyoto.  Hopefully with people like yourself and others at NB, Tim Ball, Patrick Michaels, John Christie,  et al, the message will get out and facts will start to win over factoids.  I'm afraid it will be a long process but, Sol and La Nina seems to be helping us out this year.   Like you said in a previous post, it's sad when you have to hope for colder winters to prove your point.  But as a skier, I'm looking forward to a nice cold winter.  Perhaps you'll get some nice powder in lieu of Sierra Cement down there in Calif.

*There are 2 types of politicians. Those who know AGW is a scam and those who are just stupid.

Mike

Mike,

I used to be an avid skier. Loved it. However, I really don't enjoy cold weather anymore. And, a mogul-related knee injury in Sierra Cement about 12 years ago reduced my aggressiveness on the slopes making it a tad less enjoyable.

Now, my love of snow is more drought-related, as our water supply or lack thereof is more dependent each year on snowpack in the Sierras than rain in the Bay Area.

That said, my daughter has been asking to go skiing this year. If conditions are right, I could be enticed once spring comes. There's something really magical about skiing in powder pants with just a t-shirt on! I know purists disagree, but since I can't do moguls anymore, I say the heck with purity. :-) ns

:)

Noel, You should take up snowboarding. Remember Warren Miller...."If you don't do it this season, you'll be a year older when you do!"

"When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat"         R. Reagan

NOF

NOF,

I've thought about it, but every skier I know says that you're going to spend two days falling on your butt before you pick it up. Doesn't sound like a lot of fun!  :-)  ns

Hockey Pants

Buddy of mine figured it out.  Went up to Whistler and wore hockeypants.  Was perfectly fine.

Skiing

Noel:

Will never forget the 7 ft. of snow we got up at Tahoe in Feb., '96.  Head buried a couple of times.  Was truly heaven.  Knees aren't doing that well with the moguls any more either.  Got my 5 year old daughter out skiing last year and she can hardly wait to get out this year.  3 year old keeps clamoring to get out too.  1 year old can wait.  Where the joy used to come from pounding moguls and skimming through fluff, skiing with my eldest was 10 times the pleasure.  Can hardly wait until I do it with all 3.  Wallet isn't looking forward to it, mind you.

any product or service deemed necessary

They are already doing this with medications. Incompetent governments and cultures incapable of creating these wonderful things just reach out and steal them.

The 'feel good' leftists (especially here and Europe) aid and abet these thieves 'for the better good of mankind'.

While not a supporter of isolationism, I certainly see its attraction.

Bloomberg.com has a good

Bloomberg.com has a good report on the BS in Bali. I can't get over the planting of 79 million trees to offset the carbon from all the jets that carried people there. If all the trees live it will take 20 years or better to reap the benefits. The carbon use by the jets is equal to 20,350 cars operating for 1 year. Carbon Credits are BS.

"May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't.” General George S. Patton.

79 Million Trees

I had the pleasure of living in Indonesia as an expatriate in the Oil industry for 5 years and one thing I learned during that time is that the Indonesian government is one of the most corrupt organizations on earth. If they say they will plant 79 million trees, then they will plant 79 thousand and some high placed bureaucrat will pocket the cost of planting the other 78.92 million.

If for a second I thought they would plant that many trees and if I thought that would make one iota of difference to the future climate (I don't) then lets  for 10 seconds consider the amount of environmental damage that would occur by planting that many trees. It would take 500 thousand Indonesians to plant 158 trees each .. or 250,000 people to plant 316 trees each. These folks would create all sorts of waste and (gasp) additional CO2 during the planting of these trees. It's a joke and it will never happen .. besides it'll only take a year or two before all those trees are cut down and burned by other Indonesians to clear land.. recall the massive smoke fires of the mid 90's that blanketed much of SE Asia. This is one of the most polluted messed up countries on the planet. If the IPCC folks bothered to take a 10 minute drive out of the Bali Nusa Dua Beach area where they are meeting they would witness garbage piles of plastic waste and refuse that the locals have thrown everywhere. (Paradise wasted)

Obviously this is all smoke and mirrors for redistribution of wealth.

WesternGuy...

I had to laugh while reading your post. Not because it was funny, but because of the comedy I find in the truth. Thanks for the chuckle.

The other aspect of planting 79 million trees that people don't talk about is the co2 they will create. One aspect that I find amusing (yeah, I'm in a good mood tonight) is there is a negative effect to trees. When their leaves, fruit, branches, and even their seeds hit the ground they start the rotting process. The climate that is found in SE Asia is the perfect place for a compost pile, so when these 79 million trees (not that I think they will ever get planted) start to rot it will be to the detriment to the environment. And keep in mind that these trees will be losing leaves, etc, for hundreds of years.

I'm not against planting trees, just trying to keep it all in perspective.

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/ Rush then stated that the conservative was Fred Thompson

Tree Planting

CT:

The argument you'll get on that is trees, when they rot, are only putting back the CO2 they removed so it's a net zero cycle.  However, the cars and trucks, and general all around energy needed to replant trees is quite significant and is all positive output.  Then you bring in the increased albedo affect from trees, well you really get the watermelons (Green on the outside, red on the inside), tied up in a knot.

*There are 2 types of politicians. Those who know AGW is a scam and those who are just stupid.

You know, we are all

You know, we are all worried about WWIII with the Islamonuts, and should be, but the next world war may very well be fought over this kind of crap. (they've been fought for less)

I know conservatives in general all have jobs, but we have GOT to figure out a way to have MASS demostrations against this kind of thing. We have to pull down Algore's pants, and expose him for the crook and BS artist he is, and we have to expose the communist/socialist agenda of the global warming crowd.

We have to do it loudly, we have to do it now!

Gary

Gary,

I'm not sure you know how right you are!

I frankly believe that stopping this global warming train in its tracks is conceivably just as important as the war on terror for this is equally a battle for democracy and capitalism. We lose, and a new era of socialism explodes in this country just as the baby boomers are retiring.

If we want our children and grandchildren to have the opportunities we had as adults, we had better stop this socialism NOW! ns

Socialism in Disguise

Gary - I agree and its a darned shame that the MSM buys this crud and perpetuates it every day.

This Global Warming BS and "the debate is over" stand makes me physically ill. I just saw Sheryll Crow on CNN spouting it again during an interview with Christine Amapour.. like Ms Crow knows anything about it.. Do as I say, not as I do.

I am waiting for and expect a massive onslaught of Climate Change propaganda to hit the media from the Bali conference over the next week or two. This climate change thing is getting very big and very dangerous.

Failure to do something to stop this left wing movement will result in massive costs to our economy and massive deterioration of our quality of life over the next few years.

I'll be darned - Ayn Rand was right.

As I am in the midst of reading "Atlas Shrugged" It is TRULY scary to see a government body attempting to take (steal) an American company's property by force of law.

Assuming global warming was real...

Geesh, if you were to assume global warming was real (possible) and it that it was going to be a giant catastrophe (hah, right), then this would be about the stupidest thing you could do if you wanted to stop it. If copyrights get ignored for green technology, then companies won't invest a penny in developing more. The result would be that governments would have to pick up all the research, which wouldn't be possible on top of all the other absurd costs to fight this terrible "problem". This would be pure idiocy no matter what the supposed situation is. The very fact that this is even being entertained just shows how stupid this can be.

No doubt most of the green crowd thinks that this proposal is brilliant.
