How often in the past couple of years have you heard a climate alarmist refer to a so-called scientific consensus concerning man's role in global warming?
Almost any time you see a report on the subject, correct?
Have you ever considered how this belief that a consensus exists came to be, and if it actually means anything?
Answering such questions is the Wall Street Journal's Holman W. Jenkins Jr, whose op-ed Wednesday should be must reading for citizens, media representatives, and especially politicians that actually believe an overwhelming majority of scientists around the world are drinking Al Gore's Kool-Aid (h/t NBer dscott, emphasis added throughout):
[A] Nobel has never been awarded for the science of global warming. Even Svante Arrhenius, who first described the "greenhouse" effect, won his for something else in 1903. Yet now one has been awarded for promoting belief in manmade global warming as a crisis.
How this honor has befallen the former Veep [Al Gore] could perhaps be explained by another Nobel, awarded in 2002 to Daniel Kahneman for work he and the late Amos Tversky did on "availability bias," roughly the human propensity to judge the validity of a proposition by how easily it comes to mind.
Their insight has been fruitful and multiplied: "Availability cascade" has been coined for the way a proposition can become irresistible simply by the media repeating it; "informational cascade" for the tendency to replace our beliefs with the crowd's beliefs; and "reputational cascade" for the rational incentive to do so.
Mr. Gore clearly understands the game he's playing, judging by his resort to such nondispositive arguments as: "The people who dispute the international consensus on global warming are in the same category now with the people who think the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona."
Here's exactly the problem that availability cascades pose: What if the heads being counted to certify an alleged "consensus" arrived at their positions by counting heads?
Fascinating, wouldn't you agree? But there was more:
Less surprising is the readiness of many prominent journalists to embrace the role of enforcer of an orthodoxy simply because it is the orthodoxy. For them, a consensus apparently suffices as proof of itself.
[...]
Now let's suppose a most improbable, rhapsodic lobbying success for Mr. Gore, [Vinod Khosla of the venture capital firm Gore now works for], and folks on their side of the table--say, a government mandate to replace half the gasoline consumed in the U.S. with a carbon-neutral alternative. This would represent a monumental, $400 billion-a-year business opportunity for the green energy lobby. The impact on global carbon emissions? Four percent--less than China's predicted emissions growth over the next three or four years.
Don't doubt that this is precisely the chasm that keeps Mr. Gore from running for president. He could neither win the office nor govern on the basis of imposing the kinds of costs supposedly necessary to deal with an impending "climate crisis." Yet his credibility would become laughable if he failed to insist on such costs. How much more practical, then, to cash in on the crowd-pleasing role of angry prophet, without having to take responsibility for policies that the public will eventually discover to be fraudulent.
All with media's help, of course.
In the end, a consensus concerning this issue is as much a media concocted illusion as the myth that carbon dioxide is causing the planet to warm beyond historical norms.
We can only hope such inconvenient truths will dawn upon enough press representatives before the United States kowtows to domestic and international socialist pressures to implement draconian measures whose only result will be our financial ruin.

His credibility should already be laughable, as he and his running mate had 8 years in office to try and solve this (non) catastrophe, yet they did nothing.

What you don't know about Al Gore
December 6, 2007 - 10:59 ET by PopularTechAl Gore only has a B.A. in Government (no higher degree achieved, no science degrees)
The Education of Al Gore (The Washington Times)
"Mr. Gore's high school performance on the college board achievement tests in physics (488 out of 800 "terrible," St. Albans retired teacher and assistant headmaster John Davis told The Post) and chemistry (519 out of 800 "He didn't do too well in chemistry," Mr. Davis observed) suggests that Mr. Gore would have trouble with science for the rest of his life. At Harvard and Vanderbilt, Mr. Gore continued bumbling along.
As a Harvard sophomore, scholar Al "earned" a D in Natural Sciences 6 in a course presciently named "Man's Place in Nature." That was the year he evidently spent more time smoking cannabis than studying its place among other plants within the ecosystem. His senior year, Mr. Gore received a C+ in Natural Sciences 118.
At Vanderbilt divinity school, Mr. Gore took a course in theology and natural science. The assigned readings included the apocalyptic, and widely discredited "Limits to Growth," which formed much of the foundation for "Earth in the Balance." It is said that Mr. Gore failed to hand in his book report on time. Thus, his incomplete grade turned into an F, one of five Fs Mr. Gore received at divinity school, which may well be a worldwide record."

Is there anyone with a science or medical degree out there that can tell me how that scenario is even possible on this planet?
Who will have to accept responsibility?
December 5, 2007 - 22:26 ET by pbthinkerThe media has, obviously, chosen sides, in this debate. The question comes, will they be willing to hold people responsible, when this theory falls apart? The AGW crowd has already tried to position themselves where, if it's cold or warm it's still global warming.
What the Republicans would be wise to do is put it out there that they are not convinced the the present warming trends are being caused by humans and they intend to hold the people the pass any legislation that tears our economy up, responsible for that legislation, in a big way. The Democrats have put their fingers in the air and believe they can start passing carbon taxes and other measure, to reduce carbon emissions. If they fail, as the European attempts have, they should be held responsible.
Right now, we have a tin-pot dictator, in Venezuela, threatening to cut off oil to us and getting away with it. Why? The Democrats won't let us drill in ANWAR or the Gulf of Mexico, they won't let us build nuclear power plants, and they won't let us build new refineries. The American people would get behind all of those measures, if presented properly, just to spite Chavez. It's time to hold these politicians responsible for what they've done to put us in the position we're in and warn them they will be held responsible of they continue on this path and screw us up even more.

This reminds me, I got an e-mail from Senator Boxer today. She is trying to get S 2191 out of the EPW committe and onto the Senate floor. This is the America's Climate Security Act. Among other things it will mandate reductions in carbon emissions by American businesses. All of you need to e-mail, snail mail, call or fax your senators telling them to oppose this act.

Al Gore's Global Warming Assertions
December 5, 2007 - 22:27 ET by cnclmarkAl Gore has the largest electric bill for his 26 room mansion in the Tennessee Valley according to the Tenessee Valley Electrical service provider. Al's justification is that he contributes so much money to other causes that he remains carbon neutral. I agree that the ice on the arctic circle is melting faster than ever in recent history. It's not global warming though, it's west blowing winds. Carbon Dioxide is not harmful to humans and mammals. Your plants and trees breath carbon dioxide and exhales the oxygen we breathe. The theory of the junk science of Global warming is really about the implementation of a "carbon neutral tax". Interesting how Mr. Gore has already created an exemption for his own waste in his mansion. The reality is that waste should be taxed, or supertaxed. California's new attorney General, former Governor Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown is attacking the airlines and the EPA for refusing to follow Gore's deceptive lead in the Global Warming assertion. Most scientists don't espouse this false science as truth. Guess how Greenland got its name. It used to be lush with vegetation until it froze over thousands of years ago. The worst part of the debate is the harm being caused to American workers and their employers. China sent 70 million poison turkeys to America for Thanksgiving 2007 who were fed led pellets, date rape drugs, and cheap feed to fatten them up. The Chinese exporter claims its too late to recall them, that they are in every supermarket in America. Where is the FDA? Where is the Port Authority? Our own government and political wanna be candidates are doing everything in their power to turn America's sovergnty over to the rest of the world and the U.N. If China doesn't respect us enough to send safe food products for our children and pets, do you think they are manufacturing under standards designed to reduce global warming. Perhaps Chinese profits are more important than the American foreigner's safety from unsafe products. We haven't learned yet... Childrens toys, pet food, and now human food. Some politicians have even stated that it doesn't matter if they do or not because America has achieved its rewards since our industrial revolution, asserting legitimate reasons for their non-compliance at the expense of American workers and American business. I find it frightening that we rely on third world food sources and that our bloated and expensive government doesn't even check the imports for toxicity until someone dies. You should always be careful what you wish for. For Moms, watch what you put on your families dinner table, your children's toy chest, and your pet's feed dish, especially if you can't read the warning labels because they are in Chinese.

Connecting the dots
December 5, 2007 - 23:39 ET by yruymiYou may be interested to know that global warming appears to be a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of pirates since the 1800s. A graph of the approximate pirate population versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years clearly illustrates a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.
I believe pirate subsidies from the government are the first step. Degree programs in Pirate Studies should be implemented immediately at our colleges and universities. We need to urge our allies across the globe to do likewise. A UN summit at some exotic, tropical island is a certainty. Al Gore missed the most inconvenient of truths when he missed the Pirate Connection.

Popular Tech, the global warming debate is over
December 6, 2007 - 02:12 ET by professor truthas far as climate scientists are concerned. The denialist view has been thrown on the ashheap of discarded ideas, except in the minds of a few diehards. Your inclusion of American Association of Petroleum Geologists have recently shifted their view into the noncommitted camp. I wonder why you didn't display those science bodies who now accept AGW as FACT.........like the NAS???hmmmmmm? Go to realclimate where there are REAL CLIMATE SCIENTISTS. Go PROVE your denialism there. That's where the serious scientists on climate debate the AGW ideas. Go tell them your denialist views, but I hope your skin is thick enough to withstand their critiques of your already discredited skepticism.

December 6, 2007 - 02:25 ET by PopularTechProfessor Computer Illiterate apparently can never get enough punishment. You desperation is futile.
FYI noncomittal means SKEPTICAL!
"...we often hear how the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS) have issued statements endorsing the so-called "consensus" view that man is driving global warming. But what you don't hear is that both the NAS and AMS never allowed member scientists to vote on these climate statements. Essentially, only two dozen or so members on the governing boards of these institutions produced the "consensus" statements. It appears that the governing boards of these organizations buckled to pressure from those promoting the politically correct view of UN and Gore-inspired science." - James Inhofe, B.A. Economics
Should Scientific Societies Issue Position Statements? (Ross McKitrick, Ph.D. Economics)

James Hansen, Ph.D. Physics (NASA, Gavin Schmidt's Boss)

Unfortunately they have not discredited anything and simply make deffinitive statements that fool computer illiterates such as yourself.
The Anti "Man-Made" Global Warming Resource
popular tech, the debate is over except in your mind.
December 6, 2007 - 02:31 ET by professor truthGet over it. Go over and explain to all those scientists -propagandists
why all their peer reviewed papers(over 50 for Schmidt, over 100 for Mann) have managed to get through with their smoke and mirrors ideas? You lack the guts and the facts to demonstrate anything at the RC site other than your foolihness, that's why you are too cowardly to post any of your nonsense there. It just gets smacked out of the park. Think on it, son.
Me and over 55,000 Scientists
December 6, 2007 - 02:38 ET by PopularTechThe number of papers published is irrelevant to the science. You can published 5000 incorrect papers on the subject were another scientist can simply publish one. Volume of papers proves nothing.
Now prove "Man-Made" Global Warming via the Scientific Method without using Computer Models.
There is no question you are scared of people reading my posts which is why you so desperately try to attack them.
The Anti "Man-Made" Global Warming Resource
Popular tech, science cannot prove anything!
December 6, 2007 - 03:01 ET by professor truthIt can only falsify ideas. There is nothing in science that has ever been proved, unless you add the words"beyond a reasonable doubt." Even peer reviewed papers only offer a higher level of confidence that an idea has some validity. Go over and debate the big boys at RC, popular tech. If you feel strongly about our ideas.
Typical
December 6, 2007 - 03:23 ET by PopularTechYou cannot provide what I ask so you change the argument. I have had this debate before. There are no big boys at RealClimate and they represent merely the head of the alarmist community nothing more.
I know how computers and computer code work, you the computer illiterate does not which is why you buy into all the hype. Computer illiterates will believe anything presented with the right perception of authority.

In any case, certainly not that man's generation of 6% of greenhouse gases has caused the .7 degree global temperature increase over the last 120 years.
No matter how many ten year extensions James Hansen asks for to be proven right or tax funded algorithms he refuses to release.
Nice list, Popular Tech.

popular tech, you really embarrass yourself, son,
December 6, 2007 - 02:38 ET by professor truthwith your list. How many of these "alarmists" have published peer reviewed papers?? How many PEER REVIEWED papers have YOU published? Go take your nonsense to RC where you can get ridiculed and humiliated and leave with your tail between your legs after they discredit every one of your bogus denialist arguments. Or, maybe you'll persuade those scientists like Schmidtt , who have over 50 peer reviewed papers that their climate models have no ability to predict future temperature changes. As Clint said in "Dirty Harry", "Do ya feel lucky?"......."well, do ya"? Think on it, son.
Oh you want Peer Reviewed papers...
December 6, 2007 - 02:43 ET by PopularTechA scientist can publish over 5000 papers that are incorrect and another scientist can publish simply one that is. But there is plenty of Peer-Reviewed evidence skeptical of AGW. Unlike you I understand how computer work. I have no idea why a computer illiterate such as yourself keeps posting only to further prove you have no concept of how computers work.
