Grenade Goof: CNN's Cooper Says Grenades Bought In United States

Should there be a background check for national reporters?

One wonders.  On June 21, CNN’s Anderson Cooper aired a special report for CBS’ “60 Minutes.”  In this report, Cooper repeated the tired, discredited, blatantly incorrect idea that 90% of Mexican drug cartels’ arms supply comes from the United States.  In addition, Cooper showed some interesting B-roll footage of seized weapon, some of which clearly cannot be bought on the civilian market.

Initially, one might note the M16A1, M16A2, M4, and what appears to be a standard NATO-issue M60.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
There are, however, semi-automatic civilian versions of some of these weapons available on the American market which look quite similar – without a closer look at the weapons, it is impossible to tell.  That being said, there also appears to be a 40mm M203 grenade launcher attachment on one of the weapons.  That, dear reader, is unavailable on the U.S. market – even in Texas.

Also unavailable on the U.S. market: The military-grade hand grenade in the same display.  Judging only from the video, this is either a Mk II “pineapple” fragmentation grenade, or a Russian F-1 “limonka” grenade.  Both of those grenades commonly use dynamite as its explosive component – which, of course, is an extremely tightly-controlled explosive in the United States.  Neither grenade can be bought in the United States at a gun show, at firearm dealerships, or as collectibles while still containing the explosive.

In other words, the only way to create a working, all-American Mk II grenade would be to buy the pineapple-looking grenade casing, and pack it full of American-made dynamite.  Or, instead of the do-it-yourself approach, you could buy professionally-constructed grenades on the black market, somewhere other than the U.S.  Which would a well-funded drug cartel prefer?

Now then, the presence of these weapons begs the question: Where are they coming from, if not from the U.S.?  This question is never asked, as the dogged pursuit of American gun control is seen as the only answer inside the vacuous media group-think bubble.

An alternative source for American-manufactured firearms could be Latin America.  American firearms have been sold to Latin American governments for decades – and a curious journalist might think to ask if any of those weapons have gone missing in, say, Guatemala, Bolivia, Nicaragua, or other Latin American countries to which the United States has sold military-grade weapons.

And how long might you expect to wait for this question to be asked in the main-stream media?

It might be more than “60 Minutes.”

AC has an obvious

AC has an obvious agenda...along with all of the networks regarding his issue dontcha know...they are not going to stop either until they can twist arms with the left in congress to take up chipping away once again at the 2nd Amendment...we all know it...and Holder is smiling behind the scenes as is the messiah and his other puppet-masters.

They will do so at their own peril.

Mexico and weapons.

I'll start by saying I haven't paid a lot of attention to this stuff.  I haven't paid a lot of attention because I know a lot about it and I have no respect for any journalist to 'get it right' regarding the facts and reality of nearly anything about which they write.

Still, I'll give it a shot.

Mexico was going to pass a law allowing each family to own a small firearm some years ago.  I do not know if they actually did pass the law.

So, historically, in Mexico (excluding shotguns and registered high-power rifle hunting weapons) no Mexican could actually own a firearm.

What to do?

Well, if you had a Mexican cop in the family, you could get a firearm (pistol or rifle) through that connection.  Prices were generally reasonable which was a surprise to me.

Now, I never met a cop (federal, state, municiple) who would actually sell you an automatic rifle.

Once you had your weapon, you needed only one thing else.

Ammo.

That was harder to get and quite expensive.

Now, it is true that the old WWII and Korean hand grenades exist in Mexico.  I'm not sure exactly how they got there, but I'm inclined to believe that the Mexican government bought these items from the US through an Arms Dealer.  Perfectly legal.

I'm also sure that Mexico has bought many M-16's, mortors, M-60's, M-14's and more modern grenades on the open Arms market.  It is a government, after all, and has a standing army.

But I am doubly sure that the weapons showing up in Mexico came from Mexican sources as far as the American made stuff is concerned.

The Chinese stuff, AK's, etc., are smuggled into Mexico by the usual suspects through the usual routes - air, land and sea.  Of course the corrupt enforcement officials at the Ports do not help.

I never met anyone in the Mexican Army who was supportive of this type of smuggling or supportive of letting anyone, drug lord or not, have automatic weapons.

But, it is a corrupt country.

Ammo-erica!

Well, now I know where I'm going when I need drugs, arms and tequila. That's right Anderson Coopers house!

Eh...

...I'll just stick to the arms, kthx.  I've no problem with those who choose to drink, but I wouldn't be doing tequilla shots with Cooper, if ya know what I mean *smirk*

Gee

You dont see too many M2s or 203s in the gunstores around home.

Cooper

Cooper is the perfect foil for Obama and his left wing groupies. Give him an agenda and he will find the background and the perfect props to influence viewers. Katrina was the ideal vehicle to bring Pres. Bush down to earth after 9-11. Millions of viewers, including the wife, loved the anchor who reported the stories no other network aired. You remember, Anderson in the T-shirt wading through the toxic water reporting on rampaging human animals raping young girls and slashing their throats. Bodies everywhere, bloated, left there by George Bush, the on-scene commander who vacationed instead of distributing relief supplies. When he was finished with New Orleans (I think he was on location at least six months waiting for that last pool of water to recede) he began a truth campaign about that lying Bush and Iraq.

That was the first time my wife, bless her heart, looked past his cover-boy pecs to wonder why it was so awful for Pres. Bush to do what her hero Pres. Clinton (!) , the UN, and our Congress wanted done. Cooper's star and his ratings began to dim. Now he's on to other things and apparently doesn't even care if a story has been totally discredited. He'll find the props even if he has to visit MGM to find the same grenades John Wayne threw in Sands of Iwo Jima

Alternative Sources

Its always important to remember who controlled the sale all these military grade firearms (and tanks, helicopters, jet aircraft, etc...) to a myriad of 3rd world countries across the globe--our government.  But instead of stating the truth about the origin of these militarized weapons, they blame bubba.

I went to a gun show Saturday (yes Mike, I live in Texas;) and, no matter where I looked I just couldn't find any machine guns, grenades or automatic weapons. In fact, as all us bubbas know, there is a nationwide shortage of ammunition in all calibers.

The lies just keep coming.

Time Warp?

Am I in a time warp? I though this nonsense was thoroughly debunked a month or two ago, including in several NB articles?

The Myth of 90 Percent: http://www.foxnews.com

[quote] Many of the fully automatic weapons that have been seized in Mexico cannot
be found in the U.S., but they are not uncommon in the Third World.

The Mexican government said it has seized 2,239 grenades in the last two years -- but those grenades and the rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) are unavailable in U.S. gun shops. The ones used in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey in October and a TV station in January were made in South Korea. Almost 70 similar grenades were seized in February in the bottom of a truck entering Mexico from Guatemala. [end quote]

Yeah.

Thing is, the media is like a dog with a bone - as long as they can keep chewing it, they don't care if it tastes rotten...it has been thoroughly debunked, and they keep using the statistic anyway.

But they're not biased, no sir, not one bit.  *megaeyeroll*

I think if the American

I think if the American public had access to such weaponry, either legal or illegal, we wouldn't be having such poblems with the drug cartels that the media seem to adore.

Expect the Truth?

In some ways it is really sad to see almost all of the "news" organizations to be nothing more than liberal advocacy groups.  It's not new, it just a bit disappointing that they are now so open and unapologetic in their "news" reports (read "advocacy presentations").   Of course it does make some sense if you ever looked at who the journalism majors are: the students who think they are smarter than everyone else but also too important to learn a real discipline.

Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.

Amazing

It amazes me how many people are so blind about the facts on this. As I watch the news, shows, everything overplays the hype behind guns, bombs..As an expert in firearms, ballastics, etc, one has to shake one's head when it comes just downright complacency of those in our country to be just so misinformed of life..

yes, you can purchase automatic weapons legally.even in the

peoples republic of maryland. class 3 weapons are uber expensive as in thousands of dollars.you can by an m-16  look alike (ar-15) for maybe 600-900 dollars. and to look at it the uninitiated and even some arm chair commandos would have a hard time telling it from a m-4,m-16. i think most people just want the shock value of the appearance of a military weapon.many of the cartridges  are no more deadly than commonly available hunting rounds.likewise with an ak-47. also a fingerprint card and a U.S. government background check are in order. and if thats not enough a transfer tax of last i heard 200 dollars.and, the atf can show up at your house at anytime and demand you produce the weapon in question. here's one i never understood ...you can legally own a silencer. so yes they are available, expensive to own legally.same conditions as the other class 3 weapons above. grenades, and launchers forget about it.these are covered under either the national firearms act of 1934 and or 1968.classified as destructive devices. you'll do serious time if caught possesing  one of those. check out youtube for some hilarious videos of small framed women shooting way too big guns. also, way too drunk citizens shooting well, you get the idea...me myself i own an fn/fal . google it. firearm of the free world. cool thing was before 1934 you could walk into a gunshop an/or hardware store and buy a tommy gun.clearly these guys are goin third world (and second world) for there weapons needs. ak-47's from africa going for less than 300 dollars. real ak full auto.and while i've got your attention the much lamented passing of the assault weapons ban. get this, banned bayonet mounts....haven't heard of any good bayonettings lately in the news..

This 60 Minutes report is old.

This 60 Minutes report is old. The show was re-airing an old report. Why are you covering it like it's fresh?

Think...

"This 60 Minutes report is old. The show was re-airing an old report. Why are you covering it like it's fresh?"

When you pull your head out of your butt you can see the answer to your silly question.  Because THEY are running it like it is "fresh"...
