LA Times Writer Whacks Robert Novak for ‘Shivving’ Sebelius Over Abortion

Los Angeles Times media critic Tim Rutten, in his latest column titled "The rebirth of abortion," voiced his dismay that social conservatives are reviving the issue of abortion in the 2008 presidential campaign. "If there's one issue that epitomizes the culture wars that have so deeply divided American politics over the last eight years, it's abortion. That's why those who benefited most from those wars are desperate to revive abortion's single-issue virulence in this presidential cycle." He continued that "some on the right think they see an opportunity to hammer once more on the abortion wedge."

Rutten also launched an attack one key member of the so-called "hard cultural right:" Robert Novak. At one point, Rutten suggested that if Novak used a phrase like "abortion industry" to describe abortionists and their supporters, it would be legitimate to use a term like "under the sway of neo-fascist clericism" to describe Novak and his pro-life fellow travelers.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

According to Rutten’s liberal view, "abortion was the centerpiece of a grand strategy" of the "the GOP's hard cultural right" that would "link traditionally minded Roman Catholics and socially conservative evangelical Protestants in a great coalition of the religious right that would paint the electoral map ruby red, cementing the Rust Belt and the Sun Belt into a permanent Republican majority."

The columnist then launched his attack on Novak, who criticized Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius for her pro-abortion stance in a recent column (see Tim Graham's earlier NewsBusters post on this). Novak cited "substantial evidence she [Sebelius] has been involved in what pro-life advocates term 'laundering' abortion industry money for distribution to Kansas Democrats." Some pundits (as Rutten noted) think Sebelius is a potential vice presidential pick for Barack Obama.

Rutten cried foul in response to Novak’s column. He first charged that the source of Novak’s "substantial evidence" was Operation Rescue, an organization that automatically brings up images of rabid right-wingers in the liberal mind. "[A]ccording to Novak channeling Operation Rescue, a Wichita doctor who performs abortions contributed $120,000 two years ago to the Democratic Governors Assn. The governors have since distributed $200,000 to a Kansas political action fund controlled by Sebelius. Given the strictures of the campaign reporting laws -- and the fact that the DGA has also given millions to other political action funds -- that doesn't seem like much of a laundering operation."

Rutten labeled Novak’s criticism as a "guilt by association" attack, and tried to the same with Novak:

Novak is a relatively recent convert to Catholicism, and the priest who helped him into the church is Father C. John McCloskey, who also has been instrumental in obtaining the conversions of, among others, Alfred Regnery, the country's foremost publisher of extreme right-wing literature; Lewis Lehrman, the former New York gubernatorial candidate and conservative think-tank impresario; former GOP presidential hopeful Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas; and economist and CNBC host Lawrence Kudlow.

McCloskey also happens to be a priest of the ultra-conservative and secretive -- some would say sinister -- Catholic organization Opus Dei. You don't have to buy into Dan Brown's preposterous caricature of Opus Dei in "The Da Vinci Code" to know that it really never has fallen all that far from its roots in Francisco Franco's Spain.

Hey, if Rutten played the Operation Rescue card, he might as well play the Opus Dei card as well to play on liberals’ fear of religious conservatives.

Both earlier in his column and at the conclusion, Rutten tried to cast doubt on Novak’s assertion in the existence of an "abortion industry." After he revealed that Novak supposedly got his scoop from Operation Rescue, he wrote "Putting aside the question of whether there's anything like an ‘abortion industry....’" He went back to this once he played the Opus Dei card against Novak: "So, does that make Novak's rhetorical shivving of Sebelius part of a right-wing plot to bring the United States under the sway of neo-fascist clericism? Of course not; it's an absurd and rather vicious notion, but no more so than the implication that Sebelius -- or by extension, Obama -- is in the pay of something called ‘the abortion industry.’"

Rutten may object to the term "abortion industry," since it is a bit of a loaded term, but what would one call a sector that makes hundreds of millions of profit, just as Planned Parenthood alone reported it did in its last annual report?

Also, as much as Rutten tries to brush it aside, both Sebelius and Obama do have the backing of the pro-aborts. Earlier in May, NARAL endorsed Obama (much to the dismay of certain pro-abortion backers of Hillary Clinton). NARAL also gave high marks to Sebelius, who labeled her as a "pro-choice candidate" during her 2006 reelection campaign. Oddly enough, NARAL’s rating of Sebelius (or any of the state governors for that matter) does not appear on their current states’ ratings page. The May 24 Google cache of NARAL’s website, however, shows that it had been listed before, but has since been removed.

Amazing...

Abortion is off-limits as a presidential election issue, but perfectly acceptable for dems to reject presidential bench appointments.

Why is it so difficult for

Why is it so difficult for windbags like this to comprehend that "traditionally minded Roman Catholics" and "socially conservative evangelical Protestants" are of like-mind on this issue simply because of what abortion is, and not because they have haplessly fallen prey to the "grand strategy" of the "GOP's hard cultural right"?  Why is it so difficult to understand that it's the not the tail that wags the dog?

(I recommend patiently watching this one until the end.)

Anti-Catholic conspiracy theory

This feverish anti-Catholic conspiracy theory is more extreme than what John Hagee was wrongly accused of spinning. Nevertheless, Rutten will skate on this.

By portraying the pro-life movement as a completely religious movement, in the minds of many liberals it becomes illegitimate.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

"By portraying the pro-life

"By portraying the pro-life movement as a completely religious movement, in the minds of many liberals [and misinformed voters] it becomes illegitimate."

That, my friend, is precisely their unabashed strategy.

the liberal view is the "right" view

Despite their vicious hatred of Christians who claim to know the Truth revealed through scripture and claim a moral objectivity, it's clear from the above that allowing abortion to the left is objectively the right view to have.

When the left speaks of "wedge" issues and "divisive" politics on issues like abortion, guns and the so-called seperation of church and state it merely states that their position on the issues is NOT divisive.

The liberals who push for unrestriced abortion on demand, draconian anti-gun laws and a brick and mortar fence to seperate any faith from expressing itself in public life or of course not budging and but never see themselves as being "Divisive".

It's only when you push back and don't allow them to have their way, they label the opposition as "divise".

Meanwhile they brainwash the masses through the media and schools and cry foul when someone has the courage to stand up and say they aren't going to allow these policies to stand unchallenged.

Libs use terms like "hard

Libs use terms like "hard right" to scare Republicans into abandoning the pro-life position so they won't have to fear pro-life Democrats voting republican.

If they truly didn't want abortion to be an issue, they'd favor overturning the constitutionally unsound Roe v. Wade decision which was based on a deliberate misrepresentation of the Constitution.

Then it would become a state law issue, and/or a constitutional question.  But that would put the issue into the hands of the people, and Libs don't trust that.

Fact: Being pro-life does

Fact: Being pro-life does not make one "hard right" (i.e., being more than one standard deviation outside the norm), but rather quite mainstream.  One only need to consider polling statistics to confirm this.

Total buffoonery by Rutten

Thank you for posting on this, Matt. You saved me a lot of time from doing a post myself!

Some observations:

1. He refers to Opus Dei as a "sinister" organization. He offers nothing to back up that claim. Look at their web site. What's "sinister" about the group?

2. He also attempts to downgrade/besmirch Operation Rescue. Why? He offers nothing.

3. He implies there's something wrong with a Catholic bishop seeking to uphold the holiness of the Eucharist and protecting an individual from grave sin. A Catholic who defends abortion and still goes to Communion needs to repent. That's not "nasty"; that's the Catholic faith.

4. The Church also teaches that Christians should not abandon their principles, morals, and faith in the name of "freedom." (cf. Galatians 5:13, 2 Peter 2:18-19 ... 2 Timothy 4:2 also offers valuable teaching.)

Pardon for the namecalling, but I can't avoid it. Tim Rutten is simply a buffoon.

"He refers to Opus Dei as a

"He refers to Opus Dei as a "sinister" organization."

Why?  Because they pray the rosary and seek to perform good works for the glory of God (in Latin, "opus Dei")?

"Tim Rutten is simply a buffoon."

I cannot help but to agree.

"That's why those who

"That's why those who benefited most from those wars are desperate to revive abortion's single-issue virulence in this presidential cycle."

While the Left wants to leave it to their reliably left-wing courts to ram abortion down the nation's throat.

8 years? try 35

"If there's one issue that epitomizes the culture wars that have so
deeply divided American politics over the last eight years, it's
abortion."

Eight years? Try over 35 years and counting! I seem to remember Clinton claiming on the campaign trail that he was pro-abortion as long as it's “legal, safe, and rare.” That was a lot longer then 8 years ago.

As President Reagan famously stated during a debate in 1980: "With regard to the freedom of the individual for choice with regard to abortion, there's one individual who's not being considered at all. That's the one who is being aborted. And I've noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born."

Where has this guy been for the last 35 year anyways?

The "eight years" is so

The "eight years" is so that he can blame it all on Bush and those on the "hard cultural right."

Wow. You have to hand it to the "labelling" committee. Used to be the "extreme right wing." Now it's the "hard cultural right." Of course, the intent is the same: marginalize your opponents as fringe wackos (who controls the language controls the argument).

I Know A Thing Or Two About Operation Rescue

I've said it before and I'll say it again: My belief is that Operation Rescue is a domestic terrorist group. I'm thinking that as we all agree that we are talking about the strictest definition of terrorism, like the environmental extremists who torch SUV dealerships. Now, I know that Operation Rescue hasn't done stuff like that per se, but it is agreed that the definition of terrorism includes vandalizing or destroying a person's private property. That's exactly what they did when they put a hose of running water on top of the ceiling of George Tiller's abortion clinic with the intent to cause water damage. Now here's the question I would ask: Would any of you act outraged over someone who's intent is to inflict water damage or any other kind of damage on your own private property or business? (I know, abortion is, at the very least, highly unethical, but it is still a violation of the law to damage any business based on ill intent.)

Operation Rescue has also participated in the suppression, or at least, the persecution of other religions, and believe me, I'm not taking this out of context. I know Islam is not a religion of peace, nor do I buy the claims that the Koran was thrown down a toilet in Guantanamo Bay. That said, though, if you Google the terms "Operation Rescue" and "Koran", you will find stories about the group burning copies of the Koran in a bonfire outside an abortion clinic as a "protest" against two "grave evils." They're talking about abortion and Islam. Not the evil radical extremist Islamo-Nazi faction of Islam, just Islam in general.

Oh, and then there's the case where a few of Operation Rescue's members shouted down a Hindu chaplain who was trying to lead the US Senate in their morning prayer last summer. You probably couldn't tell the difference between them and Code Pink because both these groups' members sound exactly the same when they try to shout down anyone in Congress, whether conservative, or, to a lesser extent, liberal. The biggest irony of all is that the Hindu population has been the third-most persecuted population by the Islamo-Nazi terrorists behind Chistianity and Judaism.

FYI: The group has received donations by Domino's Pizza founder and billionaire Tom Monoghan. I thought it was bad enough when they axed the Noid who ruins pizzas.

"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me."

There Is Something More Important About Sebelius & Tiller

From the Kansas City Star:

Kansas [Democrat] Gov. Kathleen Sebelius was host of a reception for Wichita abortion provider George Tiller last year at her official residence.

Anti-abortion groups Operation Rescue and Kansans for Life argue that the reception shows how cozy Sebelius is with Tiller.

Sebelius said Tiller won the reception after bidding the most for it at a silent auction sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus. Sebelius donated her time to help the caucus raise money, something she said she had done before.

“It’s not something where I can choose the guest,” she said Wednesday.

Operation Rescue released photos Wednesday that it said are of the event in April 2007, at a time Tiller was under investigation by the state.

One shows Sebelius, standing near a man who appears to be Tiller, holding up a political T-shirt celebrating the election wins of herself, Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson and former Attorney General Paul Morrison, all three abortion-rights supporters.

In a statement, Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said it’s “laughable for Sebelius to now say she has no control over who she parties with. …We don’t buy it.”

The reception occurred at the governor’s mansion, Cedar Crest. Sebelius representatives couldn’t provide a guest list, but the Operation Rescue photos show some 20 guests.

An attorney for Tiller declined to comment Wednesday, and calls to a spokeswoman for Tiller’s lobbying group, ProKanDo, were not returned Wednesday.

Tiller and abortion-rights groups that he created have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaigns of abortion-rights supporters.

Tiller has long been a target for anti-abortion groups who believe he relies on political allies to avoid prosecution. He now faces misdemeanor charges that he had financial ties to a second doctor who signed off on some late-term abortions. Those charges stem from a long state investigation of his clinic. Tiller insists that he follows all abortion laws.

Again, now, where does the governor stand on abortion?

6or7 sticks

Looks to me like you are a few sticks shy of a full bundle. They are killin babies inside tillers clinic, and you choose to defend the baby killers. Hitler denied that Jews were human, thus he was able to legaly kill several million. Black people were denied bein human so they were slaves, abused, missused, and killed, for centuries. Unborn babies are classified as non-human and the Nazi-Libs, the dimocrats, the tillers, and that ole gal that is the gov. of Kansas and maybe you have helped to slaughter over 50,000,000 unborn babies and you wanna bitch about Operation Rescue and a garden hose. Don't expect no Christmas card from me.

kilrod

?

The 7sticks,

What are you trying to convey here?  Anyone who commits crimes should be tried for those crimes.  Operation rescue, code pink, the democrat party.  It doesn't matter.  The point of this string is the attack on Robert Novak by Time Rutten.

You dislike operation rescue, I dislike Sebelius.  I lived in Kansas for a while and have a passing knowledge of what is going on there.  Novak hit it on the head and it doesn't matter if he is Catholic, of a Protestant denomination or a scientologist.  Sebelius is using the abortion industry to fund her and other democrat campaigns and has no qualms about accepting blood money.

Stick with the subject.
