CNN Contributor Argues Limbaugh's Remark Was Worse Than Bill Maher's Vitriol Against Palin

By Matt Hadro | March 07, 2012 | 18:29

A  A

Liberal comedian Pete Dominick, a CNN contributor, listed the "differences" he saw between Rush Limbaugh's crack at Sandra Fluke and Bill Maher ripping Sarah Palin in vile fashion, on CNN Wednesday. "[T]here still is a difference in terms of what comedians say," he said of Maher versus "arguably" the "most influential commentator in all of politics" Rush Limbaugh.

Perhaps his most ridiculous point was that Limbaugh was "quite literal" calling Fluke a "slut," whereas Maher just made "gender-based insults" calling Sarah Palin obscenities that were just as vile. [Warning: this article contains obscenities that are uncensored to accurately portray what Bill Maher has said about women.]

Dominick may not remember this particular instance, but Maher clearly showed his hatred for Palin last July when he called her "a bully who sells patriotism like a pimp, and the leader of a strange family of inbred weirdos straight out of 'The Hills Have Eyes'," before adding that "I'm saying it because it's true."

And Maher never said "I'm only kidding" after smearing Palin as a "twat," a "cunt," or a "MILF." Even the far-left Daily Kos didn't make such a distinction, noting that although Palin and Fluke were different targets the crime was the same for both Limbaugh and Maher.

CNN host Kyra Phillips challenged Dominick's points. "These are really harsh words, and Bill Maher stepped away from the comedic role when he donated $1 million to the super PAC," she said referring to President Obama's super PAC. "[Y]ou can imagine there are people stepping forward, including Sarah Palin, saying you tell the Obama super PAC to give this guy his million dollars back and stick it."

But Dominick was not done differentiating the crimes of Maher and Limbaugh, insisting "there still is a difference in terms of what comedians say" and downplaying Maher's $1 million contribution to Obama's super PAC. He asked "the more important point is, how influential is Bill Maher's money on politics?"

And he thought Maher's 2001 remarks – which led to the canceling of his ABC show Politically Incorrect – were "fairly accurate." Maher had quipped that the 9/11 terrorists were not cowards, but rather that "we have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away."

A transcript of the segment, which aired on March 7 on Newsroom at 11:16 a.m. EST, is as follows:

KYRA PHILLIPS: Look, Rush Limbaugh, right? Influential in the Republican Party. He calls a woman a slut, then yesterday President Obama invokes his daughters, saying that this is offensive discourse. He reached out to Fluke to support her for standing up and testifying about the issue. He wouldn't want his girls exposed to this language, he says. Now the President, whose super PAC got a million bucks from comedian Bill Maher, who said this in the past.

(...)

PHILLIPS: Pete, I'll get right to it. What's the difference?

PETE DOMINICK, Sirius/XM political talk show host: There are a number of differences, and I wouldn't apologize for any man making those kinds of comments about women, as the father of two daughters, and the husband of an amazing woman. But there are differences. A, Bill Maher is a comedian. You heard all of that laughter. That was in the monologue before his show Real Time. And Rush Limbaugh is not, Rush Limbaugh is perhaps arguably the most influential commentator in all of politics, certainly on the Republican side.

There are differences in the targets, with women running for president and a woman, mostly private, testifying one time. And there are differences in terms of the descriptions used, the describers, the words that they use. Rush Limbaugh was quite literal when he described this woman being a slut, and Bill Maher was making gender-based insults, which I frankly am offended by at this point.

PHILLIPS: Gender-based insults have such a greater impact. I mean, let's just for a moment step aside from, okay, the comedian and the powerful voice within the Republican Party. These are really harsh words, and Bill Maher stepped away from the comedic role when he donated $1 million to the super PAC. He went into that political world, so you can imagine there are people stepping forward, including Sarah Palin, saying you tell the Obama super PAC to give this guy his million dollars back and stick it.

DOMINICK: Yeah, Bill Maher stepped away from the political role when he comments on politics. He has a whole entire television show which is great, I love to be on. As do I, as a comedian and a political commentator on Sirius/XM. But there still is a difference in terms of what comedians say – and I am a freedom of speech absolutist, and I defend Rush's freedom to speak. And by the way, Bill Maher has come out in defense of Rush Limbaugh on this, being the host of Politically Incorrect, once getting, well he got fired from Politically Incorrect for his comments which weren't that – which were fairly accurate, in my opinion, and not – but provocative for the time.

But there is a difference, and you're right, we can argue about how much influence his $1 million donation to President Obama's super PAC can be. Technically, President Obama can't tell the super PAC what to do with the money. He can't communicate with them. He could publicly say I think they should give it back, but Kyra, the more important point is how influential iis Bill Maher's money on politics? We should be talking here and everywhere else about how influential big money of big industry – oil, pharmaceutical, the insurance – that money which comes to all the candidates, Democrats and Republicans. It's much more influential than a comedian-slash-political commentator.

PHILLIPS: Understand, but that money becomes a symbol, right? And women are seeing okay, Bill Maher saying these gender-based insults. Okay, he donated a million dollars to Obama's super PAC. Wait a minute, Obama came out and said hey Sandra Fluke, way to go standing up and testifying and don't let these horrible words coming out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth impact you. I wouldn't want my daughters to be impacted in a negative way by that. There's an image there. It's out there.

DONINICK: It's a fair – it's a fair criticism, and we can talk about it. But I think we would also have to talk about anything that any person who has donated much more than Bill Maher has said publicly. But let me just make sure I'm being clear on this. The problem that we have here is Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher, or anybody else no matter where they're saying it or how they're saying it, making gender-based or race-based or sexual orientation-based insults that would in any way ever discourage any young woman in this case from speaking publicly. My daughters – I would be very honored if my daughters were ever as courageous as this young woman, and come out and speak whatever they believe. And I hope that any young woman or person viewing is not discouraged by the bullying of any of these people saying these things about them.

That's really where the damage gets done, that someone would be shut up, would be afraid to speak because they would be dragged through the mud in this horrific way that has happened to this young woman. And, so, that's really the most important point about this entire conversation that we never discourage women, in this case, from speaking out what they believe.

PHILLIPS: You know, you're a dad. You've got daughters. Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher don't have daughters. I wonder if they would take –

DOMINICK: It makes a big difference.

PHILLIPS:  – use their words differently.

DOMINICK: I was not in this way an advocate for women – I'll be completely honest – before I had daughters. Men who have daughters change the way they view about how women should be treated at work, how women should be paid, in so many other ways. I have completely changed as a man and you're right. Bill Maher and Rush Limbaugh have benefitted tremendously from birth control.

PHILLIPS: (Laughter) Pete Dominick, thank you. That caught me off-guard. What a perfect way to button it up. Thank you so much, Pete.

A couple of nights ago a member posted in his subject line that, "All liberal women are c"....and a few minutes later our eager beaver here had both c*** and t*** in his subject line. His post was erased, and he's still butt hurt enough to complain about it.

Submitted by redfish on Wed, 03/07/2012 - 6:37pm.

Limbaugh was not being personal -- he wasn't making an assertion about Fluke's private behavior, he was making a satirical comment about the argument she was using. He was characterizing Fluke's own argument.

Maher WAS being personal, in that he had no reason to call her names except that he didn't like her, but its okay, because it was generic "gender-based insults."

Rush says a lot of obnoxious

Submitted by redfish on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 1:39am.

Rush says a lot of obnoxious things about a lot of public people. I don't listen to him, I don't think he helps create a civil dialogue .But he was making fun of what she was saying before Congress and that's all. Its not worse than him insulting Nancy Pelosi or Barack Obama on what they say.

He's actually gone very personal with Obama and Pelosi, commenting on their looks. He's made fun of Pelosi's Botox shots and her choice of clothing and called Obama "Barack Hussein Odumbo" because of his big ears.

If it were my daughter, I would be smart enough to realize that Rush is 1. just a loud-mouthed lout and 2. primarily had a problem with her politics. I would tell my daughter to ignore him.

And if I were a feminist, I would be upset that everyone wants Fluke to get kid gloves treatment from Rush because she's a young woman, and that Obama treated her like a damsel in distress when he called her up to comfort her and give her moral support. If I go before Congress and someone says something mean about me, will Obama give me a phone call? Or do I have to be a young woman?

The reason why its a big deal for Rush is because he is a ratings monster.

When you guys dig up liberals who make similar comment, you are right, their comments are offensive. But NO ONE reads them!

Malkin complains about Matt Taibbi's comments. But who reads him? Why do you guys pretend writers in magazines (which no one reads anymore) and liberal radio talk hosts (who listens to them?) matter to anyone? There is nothing mainstream about them.

Should I comb through every right wing blog on the internet, to find comments on Pelosi and Obama, and make them apologize? It would be futile. Thats why there is focus on Rush.

Submitted by The Vet on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 12:55pm.

The one that was raped and just assumed her insurance company would not cover the rape medicine? The one that had her sadness doubled when an women's health issues advocate (Sarah Fluke) would not take 20 seconds out of her day to call the insurance company and confirm for her fried that the insurance company would indeed cover rape medicines? That one?

Or wait. The one that actually HAD her medicin covered as Sarah Fluke testified? That one?

Miss Fluke: A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome and has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy.

Except that religious

Submitted by redfish on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 2:48pm.

Except that religious institutions don't have an objection about using birth control in this manner, and Georgetown policy allowed it also:

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/292739/out-damned-cyst-myth-kathryn...

"Direct sterilization of either men or women, whether permanent or temporary, is not permitted in a Catholic health care institution. Procedures that induce sterility are permitted when their direct effect is the cure or alleviation of a present and serious pathology and a simpler treatment is not available."

I recently watched a YouTube video where Ms. Fluke defended mandates on providing birth control, not on the cyst issue, but on a case where a doctor warned a patient that getting pregnant too early would cause seizures, it would seem the woman would have responsibility in that case:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpotlchVjeU

It should be noted that Ms. Fluke is not just a random student, but a self-described "reproductive rights activist". The reproductive rights lobby regularly will argue that providing birth control reduces health care costs, because it reduces the chances of abortion, or what they consider medical consequences of a poor woman going through with an unwanted pregnancy, like post-partum depression.

If Georgetown refused to give a woman the drugs as treatment for cysts, they went against their own policies. Meanwhile, Democrats would want to ignore that fact as a way to make this a broader fight on social policy by portraying opponents as part of a 'war on women.' Even Maureen Dowd joined in, which isn't surprising because she equates religion with being anti-women.

So, with regards to Rush... you have several ways someone could approach this. The most obvious are, you can attack him, support him, or say everyone on all sides are equally bad. If you say everyone on all sides are equally bad, though, I think you're giving in to the idea that what his critics are saying is 100% true, and that Fluke was just concerned about womens cysts rupturing. That isn't 100% true. I'm not supporting him either, though.

Advertisers Who Dumped Rush

Advertisers Who Dumped Rush

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

Politico.com gleefully and triumphantly posted a report that sponsors are bailing out in droves on conservative icon Rush Limbaugh’s nationally syndicated radio show in a kneejerk reaction to the predictable, leftist reaction to the Great Slut Controversy regarding liberal activist, Sandra Fluke.

Yesterday, Politico gleefully listed the following bailers: AccuQuote Life Insurance, Allstate Insurance, AOL, Bare Escentuals, Bethesda Sedation Dentistry, Bonobos, Carbonite, Cascades Dental, Citrix, Girl Scouts, Goodwill Industries, Hadeed Carpet, JCPenney, Legal Zoom, Matrix Direct, Philadelphia Orchestra, PolyCom, ProFlowers, Quicken Loans, Reputation Rhino, Sears, Sensa, Service Magic, Sleep Train, Sleep Number, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Tax Resolution, Thompson Creek Windows and Vitacost.

I can’t vouch for Politico’s accuracy since that website has been in President Barack Hussein Obama’s vest pocket for years. The whole slut controversy has been concocted to destroy Limbaugh and to absurdly paint conservatives as anti-woman to lock up their votes for Obama in November.

As with every conservative I know, I love the fair sex.

A more reliable listing of companies and organizations which have succumbed to misguided political correctness out of pusillanimous fear of Obama’s wrath: Sleep Number, The Sleep Train, Quicken Loans, Legal Zoom, Citrix, Carbonite, ProFlowers, Tax Resolution, AOL, Bonobos, Sears, and Allstate Insurance.

Politico's trying to make it all look horrible by listing very local advertiser who has pulled ads from Rush's time block--even temporarily.

On a national level, Rush revealed today that at least two of the sponsors who pulled out now want to get back on--one is practically BEGGING to come back. Add to that three new sponsors to come in the coming days (at the national level). So I guess there are many more conservative customers out there than they thought. Imagine that.

This is the same lame explanation that Stewart and Colbert use.

But consider that Maher is an occasional guest on Hardball -- the Matthews-hosted MSNBC program that his all about politics. When he appears, all he talks about is politics, and from a partisan perspective.

He also hosted Politically Incorrect, where he and a panel of celebrities ridiculed mostly conservative politicians.

Domenick is covering his own act because he does both political commentary and stand up comedy.

But had I been on that program with him, I would have asked him this:

"Is your daughter is running for Vice President of the United States, is it okay if I call her a c*** or t***?"

You and I would match up far less congenially than fire and water, a balloon and a cactus plant, or the Titanic and an iceberg.

I shall not reveal who I plan on voting for because I wouldn't want you to have the satisfaction of knowing that you neutralized my vote by voting for a different candidate.

No Mas! El Rushbo Resigns as Titular Head of Republican Party
May 20, 2009
All Audio & Video »
BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: As any of you and all of you who have been paying attention to the Drive-By news media the past number of months have heard, I am the titular head of the Republican Party. I have been anointed to this position by members of the Drive-By Media, and, of course, the Obama White House. I have not been named the titular or any other head of the Republican Party by anybody in the Republican Party. And so I hereby, ladies and gentlemen, today announce that I am resigning. I am resigning as the titular head of the Republican Party. Clearly I am not the titular head of the Republican Party. It's not an office I sought. It was a position that was ladled on to me when I was appointed without my acquiescence. So the only thing I can do to remain true to myself and to you is to resign this position that I never had in the first place. But because so many people think I am the titular head of the Republican Party today, I quit.

He quit being titular head two years ago.

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 2:38pm.

. . . he consults with or not.

But watch the difference in the interview when a prominent Dem guests on The Daily Show, and when a prominent Republican guests. Watch how they ridicule conservative women versus how they gently poke fun liberal women. They'll always play for laughs, but it's softball versus hardball.

Beyond that is the fact that when Stewart has been interviewed and the question of bias is raised, he always responds that he is an entertainer and not a journalist.

Fair enough. Doesn't Limbaugh say the same thing?

The Left has appointed Limbaugh as the head of the GOP -- I have heard pundits and some Dems literally crown him as the head. And when he shoots his mouth off, they demand an apology from the Republicans.

But if there is some tenuous link between Limbaugh and the GOP, there is certainly a link between MSNBC and the President. Maddow and Special Ed Schultz had personal meeting with Obama to discuss the Dems media offensive. I never heard Obama apologize for Schultz's labeling of Ingraham as a "slut."

As for calling Obama names, the instant that anyone even criticizes his policies -- let alone call him a name -- they are branded as 'racist.'

The distinction between public and private persons is a weak one. Just ask Joe the Plumber. All he did was ask Candidate Obama a simple requestion regarding Obama's camapign promises and the impact they may have on the business he wanted to start. The Left and MSM stomped on him with both feet.

I'd feint if one of these supposed journalists had enough integrity to bring Maher up in front of Obama or Carney and ask why Palin didn't get a supportive phone call from the president and why he didn't, at the time it happened, comment on what's in Bill Maher's heart.

Wow, I thought she had retired to the Old Journolist's Home, where her only diversion was giving sponge baths to Brokaw and Larry King.

Limbaugh was crass, but the Palin comment from Maher was filth

Submitted by Less1leg on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 6:08am.

Liberal media. Ah what a double standard to new lengths a liberal will take them. Hmm. it acceptable that a Bill Maher can say the most derrogatory comment about a female possible, and not get crucified by the media for saying it. You can't get more derrogatory than Bill when it comes to commenting about Mrs.Palin.
On the otherhand, the liberal media types jump through windows about a crass comment concerning Rush Limbaugh. Yes, it was gutter talk. But let's get right down to it. That young lady paying a ton of cash per year to attend that liberal stronghold University, isn't a victim but is a well placed plant to stir away a bad month of Obama administration decisions. What better ruse can you get than, Wiley Snaggletooth, " exit stage right".
this young lady for all she is worth, demands that we the public pay for her sexual indulgences. As she commented at least three times per week. Funny how the other facts get lost in translation. She also pays $70,000 bucks a year to attend Georgetown U. But she doesn't have the cash for a three times a week knock the sheets back moment of bliss with her partners. Nope, you the public are on the hook for her sexual gratifications.
And Bill Maher has the nerve and as well as the liberal media to think this is comedy er funny. And when Rush Limbaugh implies a gutteral comment about a sleazy act Ms.Fluke is. Well the liberal media go crazy. I kinda laughed when I heard the story Ms.Fluke may take Rush to court. Question, who in the right mind would challenge Rush in court over his comment. When Rush has every right to call in every sexual partner good and bad to give comments about your qualifty of character? Obviously she must be in the bottom of her graduating class because those comments alone were mind numbing, from a lawyer. Geesh... Money wasted on that twit, huh?

Bill Maher is just a comedian

Libs called Limbaugh "just" an entertainer until last week. It amazing how quickly the rules can change.

Maher, Colbert, Stewart, Letterman, this guy

Submitted by David Kramer on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 12:37pm.

They are just entertainers and comedians, they are allowed to say anything even pedophile jokes about children. But oh if some conservative says something off color or "offensive". They must be removed from the airwaves.

It is another use of the Saul Alinsky method.

Use the standards they set against them. Since liberals have no morals, their politicians can be rapists. There entertainers can call for the raping of children of politicians from the right. But call them a slut, which they are, the left comes unglued. They call for death. Funny how the leftists have a movement called the slutwalk but now they are decrying being called sluts.

They have officially become insane.

The "different story" meme is getting old.

Submitted by Quasi-socialist on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 2:07pm.

The media only investigated "Joe the Plumber" but Limbaugh insulted a civilian. That makes them different stories, right? So, in light of the fact that they are different stories, the libs win, right? I mean the press didn't say anything vile about Joe, and Rush did.

That's on one hand. But who hasn't noticed liberals lathering over privacy issues, so if someone insults you, you still have your privacy. Not so when the press comes after you with a proctoscope.

Plus Sarah Fluke offered her "expert testimony" to Congress, while Wurzelbacher asked questions of a campaigning politician in his neighborhood. But not only was Fluke's testimony offered, it was key to women being represented in whether or not the government can make Catholic institutions pay for birth control that the Dems walked out of the actual hearing and recovered with the sham hearing. So that's a different story.

Ostensibly she was offering key expert testimony to making somebody pay for something that violate their conscience. In the force of the government being brought to bear on a third party. This is as opposed to a guy asking questions of a representative campaigning in his neighborhood.

Who had better standing as a "private citizen" in their 15 minutes? Who's reaction was more extreme? And I doubt that Maher restrained himself (does he even know that it's possible?) from bagging on Wurzelbacher at the time.

One of my favorite quotes from Charles Forte is "Everything is like something else to a degree". I think the negative is true as well: Everything is unlike everything else to a degree. The libs keep looking to distract with vacillating differences. But the facts are 1) they have said much worse about women. 2) They have done worse about people not in the public eye.

Bill Maher said "Americans are stupid". I would guess 99(?)% are not "public figures" thus Maher is calling a large degree of people who will never offer their expert witness to Congress "stupid".

Rush might have said something with the unprecedented combination of insulting toward women and punching "private figures", but I think that honor goes to James Carville for his "drag a 100-bill through a trailer park comment" when faced with a woman who claims to have been sexually harassed by his employer. Fluke wasn't on the scene by way of her claiming victim-hood of sexual harassment and Paula Jones, although she was offering testimony against the President of the United States was only a "public figure" by bringing a suit that brought a lot of interest.

I'm quite sure that Maher told no Paula Jones jokes, right? Carville didn't lose his job because there were a lot of liberals who agreed with him. "Yup, trailer trash." And you didn't believe her story (even though it was eventually the President who lied under oath--but that was an okay lie)

Yes, libs. We understand. You will look for any opening to press for a political victory. You will also look for any difference and diversions or chaff that you can throw up which diffuses your hypocrisy.

Someone Expose The Media

Submitted by feisty on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 2:11pm.

It's really quite astonishing that the media will not move off this issue, especially after an apology was made. With each passing second it's becoming less and less an issue. The death and destruction in the midwest is barely covered anymore, but the embers from this silly issue are still being stoked by the media. I couldn't imagine seeing this carry on so long 20 years ago. It would be covered and then a day or two later, there would be other things to report and it would be over.

I really wish Newbusters or someone could infiltrate the media and find someone willing to talk (anonymously or whatever) and tell us where the marching orders come from. Who makes the decision to not move off an issue like this. I know we could all answer it one way or another, but I wish I could hear someone brave in the news media actually say it and explain why issues like this are promoted endlessly 24/7. It seems very coordinated across all news outlets, from NBC evening news to Access Hollywood, to crap shows like The View. Nobody seems to want to forget about it.

Who or what is pulling the strings on this (the White House? Someone on the inside tell us) story?

Private citizen attack

Submitted by Nelbert on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 10:15pm.

The left have been trying to run cover for people like Maher by all the talk about how the slurs used by Limbaugh were about a private citizen.

While I don't find that a reasonable defense, Maher has also unleashed his venom against private citizens. En masse, he's used vulgar insults against those in the Tea Party, who - shock of shocks - are private citizens. (Has anyone on the left ever bothered to offer any sort of apology for use of the vulgar pejorative "teabagger"?)

I have never heard of Pete Dominick is (he's just that good a comedian), but he and his ilk have stirred up a hornet's nest. The outrageous double standards have worn thin and people like Maher, Malloy and others know that all those attacks against the right can backfire and overwhelm them as well.

Flukes role as an "activist"

Submitted by Radical1979 on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 11:55pm.

Means she is no more a private citizen than Sarah Palin. But why is it that a conservative woman in politics should be fair game for sexual name calling? Isn't she also just trying to do her civic duty and help he country?

Running for office doesn't make a woman fair game for this abuse.

HBO and Bill Maher ARE accountable to advertisers....guess who?

Submitted by thescoots on Fri, 03/09/2012 - 9:32am.

YOU! If you are conservative....how on earth can you justify giving one more dime to a network which is nothing more than the entertainment wing of the democrat party? Are you that hooked on their smack?

Cancel HBO, conservatives! I did....its very liberating...and believe it or not....when enough Benjamins are absent....change will happen....always follow the money. If Bill Maher's ridiculous excuse about how he is exempt from accountability because he has no advertisers and he's just a "comedian"...then maybe Game Change will convince you. Cancel HBO Sunday...the day Game Change airs....that will speak volumes.

Where do you think Bill Maher got the one million dollars to give the Obama's PAC? He got it from YOU! How is that working out for you?
