AZ Aftermath: Halperin Condemns Conservatives for Not 'Turning Other Cheek'

By Mark Finkelstein | January 11, 2011 | 08:29

A  A

NewsBusters has exhaustively documented the ways in which the liberal media and Dem politicians have sought to exploit the Arizona shootings, seeking to pin blame on a range of Republicans and conservative media figures.

It was thus nothing short of surreal to listen to MSNBC analyst Mark Halperin this morning.  Surveying the situation, Halperin praised the media and politicians for their reaction to the shooting . . . while condemning Fox News and conservative pundits for treating the tragedy like "war and fodder for content."

When Joe Scarborough rightly suggested that Halperin had it backwards, the Time man wouldn't back down.  View video after the jump.

MARK HALPERIN: I just want to single out one thing.  I don't want to over-generalize but I think the media and the politicians have behaved pretty well so far. The thing I'm most concerned about now is the anger on the right-wing commenatariat: on Fox, and George Will, and other conservatives are, in some cases justifiably upset at liberals. But they're turning this right now, in the last 24 hours, back into the standard operating procedure of all of this is war and fodder for content, rather than trying to bring the country together.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Wait a second, Mark. I think they would say that you have that backwards. That a shooting was turned into fodder to attack conservatives.

HALPERIN: And I, and I, and I already made that criticism as well.  They're right. But rather than seizing on it and turning the other cheek, they are back at their war stations. And that's not going to help us.

This time, yet again, the left's warped fantasies are dashed............

Submitted by StarAZ on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 11:10am.

It's my dream to "behave" in the way this person wants. He is right in there stirring and stirring, I see...fire burn and cauldron bubble... I love how these people make the leap so effortlessly--people in the streets protesting, this just "must" inflame people...Just "must." They have no evidence, much less proof! Just their deeply held conviction...why sure, it must, it just makes sense. I see THEY are inflamed and looking for a camera--that's all I see. Like that sheriff in Pima county. We have some camera hog sheriffs here as you might have heard.

Sarah called these pusillaminous idiots out properly

Sarah Palin accused them of "blood libel".  Now the sycophants have something like "death panels" with which to remember themselves.

"Palin said blame should rest "not with all the citizens of a state, not with those who listen to talk radio, not with maps of swing districts used by both sides of the aisle, not with law-abiding citizens who respectfully exercise their First Amendment rights at campaign rallies, not with those who proudly voted in the last election."

GO SARAH!!!  Let's hear Paul Krugman cry and whine about being read out by a GIRL!!!

An apology would help

Submitted by KC Mulville on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 8:44am.

In the first place, perhaps we now know why conservatives are at a "war station" to begin with. Second, Halperin might admit that the right-wing was screwed by both left-wing and "moderate" news outlets, but that certainly isn't an apology. The outlets certainly haven't apologized.

Democrats and the media have take quite a few cheap shots. Halperin admits it, but he's annoyed that conservatives fought back.

Good.

Leftist hatred...

Submitted by adamsmith on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 11:52am.

This lefty hatred has been going strong for a decade is right. Since Gore lost the election, they have been besides themselves. Brought about two of the biggest propaganda machines: The DailyKos and Huffington Post as well as Media Matters. All created to destroy Fox News and Talk Radio. The only problem for them is most people get informed on the internet and are not fed the swill anymore from the big three networks. Progressivism is dying...They are being exposed more and more for what they are and what they believe. It'll take awhile to kill this beast because it basically has to kill itself with the Dem laws of unintended consequences, like this twisting news to fit their narrative. Any exposure of facts shows how dishonest they truly are. It's the end for them, and they're too brainwashed and stupid to see it coming.

By the way, Mark Halperin makes me sick. He's a media elite pansy........

My generation grew up watching the 3 Stooges and Saturday morning cartoons, and there was nothing more violent than Moe hitting Curly with a hammer to the head, or Wile E Coyote getting blown up numerous times. Did we see that happening in every 10 year old kids house? Don't think so.

Liberals are so quick to blame society for all the worlds ill's, yet they don't seem to get the fact that personal responsibility is what needs to be stressed.

You say process costs money, that's the same line of thinking that makes up the death panels by the Chairman himself  "rather than give grandma a pacemaker, give her a pain pill."  No value on life, in other words.  That's a typical liberal idea.

I'm not a law expert or anything but to me there is a small yet important difference. When I took driver's ed in school I remember being told that driving is a priviledge and not a right. If you pay to keep a license, pay for insurance, and obey a thousand traffic laws, you're granted the priviledge of owning a car. As soon as we start treating guns with that same attitude then we're basically telling people you don't have a basic right to own a gun.

We already make pharmacies spend a bunch of time documenting IDs to buy sudafed for a cold, but that hasn't done much to slow down teen drug use. I'm tired of everyday necessities being hidden behind a "pay wall" or a "license wall" by the government.

No, but tougher regulations have reduced the incidence of drunk driving.  Do you advocate a relaxation of those laws inasmuch as the problem hasn't been completely eliminated?

a danger to himself or someone else, how's about you go to court, fill out the paperwork and have your BiL committed for a mental evaluation?  If that's available in the state you live in?  The responsibility lies with those who know him, not the police, not the doctors, not the sheriff, not the political parties.

If there are police reports on his "instability", have you made sure those reports have been forwarded to the proper authorities, so that, if he attempts to purchase a gun, the sale will be blocked?

HALPERIN: And I, and I, and I

Submitted by Newsbusterbrown on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 9:55am.

HALPERIN: And I, and I, and I already made that criticism as well.  They're right. But rather than seizing on it and turning the other cheek, they are back at their war stations. And that's not going to help us.

The "us" meaning Democrats/liberals/progressives, of course.

While I'm not as angry as I was on 9/11, I'm damn close to it. If the Left thinks we are going to allow them to roll over us based on their despicable lies, they have another thing coming.

Last Night O’Reilly had his best show ever.  He dedicated the whole show, except “the Back of the Book,” to exposing and lambasting outrageously irresponsible remarks by Sheriff Dupnik, the NYT,  Paul Krugman and others on the Left blaming the AZ massacre on anyone on the Right they do not like or the Right itself.

Here we go again. The Left Wing Idiots are trying everything to take the attention away from the fact that Loughner was a LEFT WING LOONIE. Calling for more civil diatribe but, for whom are they really refering to? if you watch all of the big time lefties Olberman, Maddow, Matthews, Behr etc. they are the ones that spew out the hate and vile using sub culture language calling others names and throwing around enuendos condemming conservatives and right wing idiology. So, who are the real demons of dialogue? only those of us that pay attention know who the real culprits are. I dare say MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN.should look at their programming for the answer, or is the hate to over whelming to see the truth.

This is absolutely distressing and depressing.  I am heartened that Rush, BOR, and etc are fighting back(saw some of BOR last night for the first time in a while, boy, he was pissed), Fox News is fighting back by focusing on that dipstick dupnik idiot and so on, but damn, it's mentally and emotionally tiring wading through all that crap!

Mark, you and the rest of NB deserve a medal for dealing with it, that's a helluvalot of material to put out in so short of a time.  You guys brought to life in black and white the war between the left and right, between those that value freedom and those that want to take it away.

It's easy to see who is the bigger danger to everyone in this country, and it's definitely not the shooter who did what he did.  It's the people like dipstick, clyburn, schultz, anyone and everyone who subscribe to the idea that conservatives are responsible for this.

The mask was ripped off violently this time

Submitted by Tomorama on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 12:12pm.

I live in Massachusetts and read both dailys.....

The Herald which is the supposed right-wing paper had TWO columnists write the day after this blaming Palin, talk radio, right wingers etc, etc

The comments section lambasted them and rightfully so as they made their minds up with no facts to back them up (yes Obama, THEY jumped to conclusions).

Today Margery Eagan writes another column but today says "he is just all over the map", BUT she ONLY mentions his love for Gold and the constitution as proof that he was part right -winger.

No mention of the FACTS that he approached Gabby in 2007 LONG before Palin and the tea partiers, typical of this type.

Or that one of his friends said he was a dope smoking left winger.

The comments are again hammering her, but the apologists are wondering "why are we so upset and angry" totally DISCOUNTING THE COLUMN SHE WROTE THE OTHER DAY.

JUST LIKE Hellperin here. HOW DARE WE STICK UP FOR OURSELVES?

Lastly, the Globe, the progressive paper in town has ALLOWED NO COMMENTS ON THE SUBJECT AT ALL (thus the lefties are getting their asses kicked on he Herald site instead).

I've been wanting to post that sentiment for a bit, now.

Also, there are always lunatics who are apolitical and just plain nuts.  Remember the man who boarded himself into the one room schoolhouse and killed all of those little Mennonite girls about fifteen years ago?

The democrats and liberal media have really jumped the shark this time by viciously and falsely trying to tie this crackpot to conservatives.  And now they've compounded their problem (hee hee) by wratcheting up the rhetoric about "tolerance", all the while acting like the most intolerant boobs on the planet.

I hope Obama uses this opportunity to further stick his foot in it, we know he won't be able to resist (okay 5% that he does it right).  If anyone knows about acting "stupidly", it's Obama.  I'm predicting it's going to be Wellstone V.2.0 tomorrow.

Submitted by Hunter12 on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 12:15pm.

The liberals aren't asking us to turn the other cheek, they're asking us to bend over.  Go back to a tea party rally last summer and look at the signs.  They say stuff like "stop spending our money" or "No Obamacare".  It takes a liberal to read hate into that.  As a exercise, go back and look at an SEIU rally.  The signs there are Palin as Hilter, Bush as the Devil, "Kill fill in the blank conservative", and so on.  There, you have to be blind and deaf not to see the hate.  The Conservatives are right to stand up and say "Not this time" to these idiots.  This is a tragedy that can't be laid on our doorstep.  Don't allow any lib to get away with this crap.

Oh man....The fact that this fool not only actually believes this backward crap but was actually willing to go on tv and say it, is nothing short of stunning...Looks to me like the Arizona shooter might not be the only one who doesn't have a grip on reality here.

Halperin and Morning Joe...

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 5:31pm.

One thing is certain:   A 40-second clip doesn't provide anything close to the context gained from listening to the entire seven minute segment [particularly the last couple of minutes].

I would urge you to do so.  It is the one depicting Halperin and referring to "heated rhetoric" and can be accessed by scrolling the series of video clips on the left.  There will still be areas of disagreement to be sure, but I think you'll conclude the discussion to have been more balanced than you suspect.

OK, I Watched the Video

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 8:35pm.

I heard platitudes from Halperin, nice one's to be sure, but nothing that exemplified the rhetoric coming from his own mouth.  Scarborough, however, did chime in asap with criticism about those on the Right, his criticism for those on the Left appearing to me a stuttering afterthought for "balance".

Since you are trained in verbal jousting and legal strategy - never ask a question you don't already know the answer - you do have facts to back up your support of Halperin, such as Halperin's specific and exclusive criticism of those on the Left... replete with names, quotes, and context... since the shooting in Tucson?

Am I to assume you, and Halperin, would "turn the other cheek" when accused of horrific behavior such as being an accomplice to murder?  How about wife beater?  Child molestor?  Drug peddler?  You would remain silent over any of these spurious and vile charges during your public crucification?

Halperin's plea is a sham to deflect the wrong done by the Left in the wake of these murders and place a strawman burden back upon the maligned Right to "behave".  Unlike the legal system where silence is not to be a measure of incrimination, a failure to respond to the malicious muckraking by the Left will further cement the lies the Left promotes to America and the world.

A response is appropriate and required.  There needs to be consequences for the reckless, wanton, self-serving behavior or no one will learn a damn thing and it will happen again and again and again.
