CNN's Howard Kurtz Recycled Myth Fox Censored Sally Field for Anti-war Bit

By Lynn Davidson | September 19, 2007 - 09:31 ET

Washington Post journalist Howard Kurtz analyzes media issues on his CNN show “Reliable Sources.” But he created a media issue of his own by propping up the false story pushed by the many in the media that Fox censored actress Sally Field during her Emmy acceptance speech for making an anti-war statement.

However, that's not what happened. Instead, as the orchestra signaled her time was up, Fox cut Field's sound after she uttered “G******.” Fox also censored two other speakers for obscenity.

Kurtz was a guest on the September 18 Glenn Beck show to discuss infotainment drowning out hard news in the media. Then Kurtz claimed the story became legitimate once Fox censored what he falsely labeled as Fox silencing Field's anti-war comment (my emphasis):

KURTZ: Well, it's a non-story that became a story because of FOX pulling the plug on her anti-war sentiment. But look, the...

BECK: That's not what they did, Howard. They did -- they did not do that.

KURTZ: They didn't like the word she used, I know. But, look, there's no question -- this started with O.J. in the '90s, and then television got addicted.

Kurtz started out saying Fox pulled the plug because of Field's “antiwar sentiment,“ but once Beck objected, the newsman quickly admitted it was the profanity. So, what was he thinking? Did the exhilaration of slamming Fox override his journalistic instincts? Surely the host of a show that is supposed to dissect media accuracy wouldn't engage in deliberate deception. Was he just caught up in the moment?

Whatever the reasons, Kurtz knew the real story behind the censor cutting Field's speech and still stuck with the same left-wing propaganda. Maybe he can address it on his own show.

Kurtz thought he could help

Kurtz thought he could help Sally out. Tried to pull a fast one and was called on it. Seems that he isint a very reliable source.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

OMG!  How many heads does

OMG!  How many puss oozing pimple heads does Big Brother have?

By the time Fields got to REMEMBERING her memorized diatribe (through idiotic stammering and fumbling while trying desperately to recall the "lines") she was pushing herself for time as hers was past "up" and practically slurred the words "...no g/d war" together so that the producer with his finger on the live button didn't have the ability or time to bring her back up after g/d ...

The fact is, Field had made comments on the war prior to that sentence, and had NOT been censored.  I didn't watch the stupid show, but I would bet she wasn't the only celebrity who felt the addictive need to inflict the viewing public with her (their) political views that night ... and I would wager they weren't "bleeped" for their comments.

So, this leftist MSM push that Field was censored for her antiwar view (which wasn't all that specific, when you look at it, really) is simply a desperate effort to smear Fox ... in addition to being complete bull$#!+ ... as usual.

No celebrity has EVER, been

No celebrity has EVER, been censored or bleeped for ANY
anti-war statement. In fact, they are celebrated, if anything.

She got bleeped for the G-dmn, and that's all; the fact that the word "wars" got caught up in the bleeped portion was
accidental.

This is the part that really frosts me: When they want to inflict their views on everyone, politics at the awards is fine. I'll bet you anything if someone got up and gave a pro-Bush speech (work with me here, use your imagination LOL), they would all be whining how politics has no place on the Emmy awards show.

Yep, no doubt, mb ...

Yep, no doubt, mb ... Including a round of hearty boos from the collective audience of peers.

Remember when the American Indian gal accepted Marlon Brando's Oscar many moons ago ... and she made the political statements?  Seemed there was a bit of a squirming silence of sorts from the group then.  But she opened the door for this sort of BS way back then.

Arrr! I be wanting to join

Arrr! I be wanting to join in that round of hearty booze. If yull be having me.

Ah, who could forget Sacheen Littlefeather... and lest we forget the streaker Robert Opel running in front of David Niven at the '74 Oscars.

"Why would the library ban a book like The Six Bunny-Wunnies Freak Out?" - Linus Van Pelt

That was

That was pre-Holywood-out-of-the-closet ... Think Niven was secretly turned on?

Garrr, belly up and find ye self a pint that don't be teeming with worms ...

If Sally was about to make

If Sally was about to make a pro-troops statement and preceded it with the same profanity... same result. Fox pulled the plug on the obscenity before her thoughts and words were uttered. It wasn't about the war, it was about Fox not wanting to pay a hefty fine for an actress's deliberate disregard for the rules.

Ironically, it seems Kurtz is actually the one trying to turn a "non-story" into a bigger story.

What a Rush:)!

...absolutely right - I wonder if this guy was defending Rush when they ran him off of his NFL gig? Probably not...

Did the exhilaration of

Did the exhilaration of slamming Fox override his journalistic instincts?

Probably. Unless his "journalistic instinct" IS to slam Fox.

Whatever the reasons, Kurtz knew the real story behind the censor
cutting Field's speech and still stuck with the same left-wing
propaganda. Maybe he can address it on his own show.

Don't count on it.

Another Objective Look From Howie

You've nailed MB.  Let's all sit back and see if Howie Boy will point out the error of his ways on his own show.  After all it's CNN's most objective look at the media.

No wonder

Libs favor the fairness doctrine.  When they don't control ALL the media, they can't as easily get away with their lies.

kurtz

"It all started with OJ in the 90's".   Huh??, as I recall the FCC started cracking down after the infamous Janet Jackson/super bowl wardobe "malfunction".

While I didn't like Sally's

While I didn't like Sally's comments, what really bothers me is the deliberate, undeniable misrepresentation of what Fox did, and by journalists at that, who KNOW they are lying, and are doing so for the purpose of influencing public opinion.

Here's an example. On Cavuto today, Quentin Hardy basically asked "If things aren't so bad in this country today, then why does a recent Zogby poll show most Amercians believe a recession is coming?" The reason, Quentin, is because people like you keep telling them a recession is on the way. If you constantly preach gloom and doom to everyone, what else would you expect them to believe, whether on the financial markets, the environment, or the war on terror?

And when people like Kurtz have it in for Fox, and are willing to lie to further their cause, what do you expect people who don't watch Fox to believe? They believe what is told to them by the "honest" media.

Anyway, kudos to Glenn for calling him on it.

RMRYou hit the nail on

RMR

You hit the nail on the head. Howard Kurtz and the gang at CNN are so green with envy at the success of Fox News that they are now willing to do and say anything to malign and destroy it. With their liberal blinders firmly in place, they are incapable of seeing the ever growing need ( in America and world wide) for an entity such as Fox News.

After all, from inception they ran the show with NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN et al. All liberal. All day long. Now they are at a loss trying to figure out why Fox? Why now? Hint: A long awaited Conservative voice. Finally!

RMR Does anyone really

RMR

Does anyone really expect Howard Kurtz to be honest when running cover for liberals? Howard Kurtz has used his show on CNN to promote liberal talk radio and blogs via Rachel Maddow, Ed Shultz and that vile Ariana Huffington ( promoting her Huffington Post). Giving, in particular, Rachel Maddows and Ed Shultz a platform to attack Rush Limbaugh as if they are in the same league as he. That's like me challenging a NASA scientist to a debate on Jet Propulsion.

Howie is as liberal as his co-workers at CNN and The Washington Post.
