Kathy Griffin to Play Palin-esque Tea Party Candidate on 'Glee'

By Lachlan Markay | February 21, 2011 | 19:14

A  A

This is going to be messy. Kathy Griffin, Hollywood's favorite D-list vulgarian, will apparently be playing a Tea Party candidate loosely modeled on Sarah Palin in an upcoming episode of Fox's "Glee", according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What could go wrong?

Griffin discovered not so long ago that bashing Palin and her family can help prop up her sagging career - without controversy, Americans might just be asking, "Kathy who?" After this gig, though, it will be sheer comedy simply to see the lengths Griffin will go to mock the former governor.

Here are the few details THR reported over the weekend:

TV Guide confirmed that Griffin will play Tammy Jean, a conservative home-schooling Tea Party candidate rumored to be based on Sarah Palin, while Devine will take on the role of a stripper-turned-nun named Sister Mary Constance.

Griffin took to Twitter to announce the news. When asked if she would be appearing on the hit show she replied, "So excited!! It's true!!"

This is the same Kathy Griffin who said she would "like to push Sarah Palin down the stairs" and was heartily booed at a USO event after mocking Palin's daughter Bristol.

Griffin's lowlights also include calling Sen. Scott Brown's daughters prostitutes, and telling both Jesus Christ and "View" host Elizabeth Hasselbeck to "suck it."

In short, Griffin's appearance will be exactly what you'd expect from a Palin impersonator on "Glee".

Palin fatigue

Submitted by tombaker on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 7:54pm.

I am pretty sick of the need to defend the honor of Palin, or any concern over what a TV show does to mock very very public figures.

Palin dishes out plenty of mocking of liberals, which just because I think it may be more true than not, does not mean the other side is prohibited.  I personally find Palin’s sing songeee “I am just one of the working moms” style tiresome....is it ripe for satire?  You betcha!

If Palin has enough good ideas to be President, she would still be Governor of Alaska working those ideas.

If Palin’s reasons for not being able to continue as Governor because the job was now too difficult because of the increased scrutiny….then she could never handle being President, because the scrutiny to the President would be worse.

Palin's needing to escape being Governor, is simply an indication of her skills, and skills are what are needed at this time.

It's a shame the attacks on

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 7:54pm.

It's a shame the attacks on Palin have given you Palin fatigue.

It wasn't the scrutiny that caused Palin to resign as gov, it was having to fight and pay for legal challenges while working as governor.  She knew she was going to be bankrupt and out of the office fighting in court.

I don't buy the legal

Submitted by tombaker on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 8:05pm.

I don't buy the legal challenges angle, as Governor she is protected in her job duties, as acting as a Public offical, by the state of Alaska.

Legal challenges to her campaign for VP are the same regardless of her current office.

If it was a matter of restricting disclosures...I don't see the need.

Given her ablity to sell books, which she could have done in office, the implications of going bankrupt are pretty thin.   Plus she could have stood her ground and fought against undue acts.

It remains, as she could not handle this pressure as Governor, she could NEVER handle it as President.   She crumbled, its a fact.   I don't want an affirmative action President.

You need to get a clue.

Submitted by RefudiateObama2012 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 8:06pm.

You need to get a clue.  Alaskan law required the Governor to pay for her defense personally.  If you'd take the time to learn something before you post, you won't look so silly.

At the time, Palin didn't

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 8:09pm.

At the time, Palin didn't know how her books would sell, and she couldn't have fufilled her duties as governor and gone on book tours at the same time.

I'd say she's handling the pressure pretty well so far.  Because here she is, not in any public office, and the left is still going after her nonstop.

Palin has hardly "crumbled"

Submitted by nkviking75 on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 9:18pm.

First, if Palin "crumbled", she would have done her best to lower her profile.  Does it look like Sarah Palin is trying to avoid the public eye?  And in remaining as visible as she is, she had to know she would continue to be picked apart by her enemies.

Alaska needs to change their ethics laws so that the costs of frivolous charges are borne by the parties who raise them.

Food for thought

Submitted by Unsane on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 1:22am.

I realize you hate Palin with an intense passion, but you need a lesson in geography.

Juneau is a 90 minute flight to Anchorage.  From Anchorage, it's three hours to Seattle, five hours to Minneapolis, and close to eight hours to Atlanta.

It takes a lot of time, effort, and hassle to get the hell out of AK.

Hence, this is more than likely the reason she was due to resign from office.

This coming from someone who isn't sold on her!

And I hate to burst your bubble, but she was not an affirmative action governor by a long shot.  In some regard I could argue that we have an affirmative action President right this second.

If Palin had continued as

Submitted by rimsky on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 8:10pm.

If Palin had continued as Governor she would have been financially destroyed because she would be spending all her time defending herself in court over frivolous, trumped up lawsuits designed to do nothing more than destroy her character and her career. She knew that no matter what choice she made, to stay in office or resign, there would be criticism.  And of course, it's much more than just criticism, it's pure hate.  IMO she made the only choice she could make and not be destroyed financially. And yes, she's parlayed it into being famous and perhaps even rich.  So what?

I think she has an outside chance of winning a Presidential election and I think she could be a good POTUS, but I hope she doesn't even run. Sarah Palin is a much better political force outside of office. I'm glad we have her as a spokesperson who talks tough and doesn't take prisoners.

oTr - how about a bit of critical thinking vs just a fanboy

Submitted by tombaker on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 5:22am.

oTr:

1.  Palin crumbled, quit, ran away, could not complete, stopped trying, got a note from her hubbie to be allowed to go home... if it walks like a duck it is a duck.  She quit.   She was elected to do a job, and she could not finish.   Was it because she was a woman?  Who cares.... she could not finsh.

2. She is not going to have it any easier in any other elected office, and its fair to say the pressure of President would only unravel her faster.   If she can not hack the heat of being governor of the tiny state of Alaska, there is no question that she would fail as President.   As a fair predictor the electorate should look at her experience as Governor, and rightfully conclude that since she could not complete her term, she would fail in any greater office she would aspire to.

3. Palin had 1.25 Million from the publisher of her book as a signing retainer, BEFORE she quit, she was only going to get more money....at the time she resigned, she said she had legal bills of 500K, even if she has to pay those out of her own pocket, she is still over 625K ahead of the game.   In the system of the legal attacks, she only made out greater monetarily.

4.  Palin's usage of "don't retreat, reload" is politically stupid.  She was stupid for using it, and then trotting out and showing herself as hunting on her reality show.   Of course this was going to get used against her, shame on a politican for not having a clue this would happen.  Geez even the congresswoman that was shot was calling her out on it at the time.   Do I need a woman so stupid to making statements that will so easily be misused by others.  Heck no.   I don't want a baby in the woods, who can not stop her mouth from causing everyone else to get in trouble.      I guess others want to defend her honor, OHHH she can talk about guns, and this and that, but I just see a fool set herself and her party up for ridicule.   So yes some did wrongfully associate her with the shootings.....but heck, it was clear as day one that her stupid banter would be used against her.   I don't need to defend stupidity.

5.  Palin is just a Foxnews pundit....she won't go on other networks.  I can be a pundit too.  We ottta do this, we otta do that.  But the problem is an CEO or someone in an executive office, has to do things.

6. Palin CUT and RAN from being governor.....she crumbled, she took an elected executive postion and was not able to lead.

I am looking for skills and ablity, I want a conservative with a record of accomplishment.   Palin could not complete being governor, it's a failure to serve out the term.  oTr don't try and tell me that she was able to complete being governor.   And don't spew hogwash as to why the poor Sarah was so stressed out about legal bills......she made over 5 million on that book, and had 1.25 already in the bank when she quit.

Oh and as far as her ablities out of office?   How is her darling Christine O'Donnell working out for you in Delaware?   Oh yeah she cost the majority for the Republicans....dang.

There are better Republicans than Palin, sure I think she is better than Obama, but most of the country won't and Palin vs Obama is a win for Obama by anyone with a clue.   I don't think Republicans should hook up with a Political loser like Palin, you see the Democrats trumpeting John Kerry after he lost?

Don't retreat, reload....You betcha (that is gonna get used against you....Palin you twit)

No I don't hate Palin, she is just a broken down car....I would love to spend the time to work with her, get her all fixed up. but hell, why bother....other cars are in better shape, and don't have the terrible brand name......

But hey I was making excuses for her too.....I was doing it all....but I have decided that this dog don't hunt.

So, whaddya think the chances are that gal, what's her name, the female, Sarah something or other out of Alaska - I heard she pales in - hey, maybe that's it, Sarah Palesin - that the woman just pales in comparison to a real live thinking human being, seeing as how she's just a girly-girl on the distaff side of humanity - ya think mebbe she, the female girl I mean, might have a shot at higher office some day? I heard she, the lady that is, an actual female woman type, was a pretty good shot, speaking of shots, with a gun; but since the she-lady-female ran screaming from office like a little girl afraid of dancing with wolves, bears, and caribou, that there are some of us unbelievably strong but not so silent macho hombre type chest thumpers who are pretty darned sure she ain't got the huevos to handle a position like, say, prez, you know, what would take a real, for real, really real hunky hunk for sure enough testosterone laden dude what can bring some for sure real life swagger to the table, like say, John McCain, who was a genuine real life warrior some forty plus years ago before he turned into a rhinoceros, or maybe a good looker like ol' Mitt with the Massachusetts HealthCare Plan up his butt, I mean sleeve, or hey, how about you tombaker, you manly man who obviously is one of the manliest men ever, step on up and show us how it's done, cuz you sho would have the inside track what with all yer knowledge, expertise, experience, and stuff, an' that there motor mouth of yours might even be of some help when it comes to bad mouthin' the opposition, cuz you gots that part down gooood!

The tiny state of Alaska?  Yeah, Juneau is a 90 minute flight from Anchorage.  If you split AK in half, TX, becomes the third biggest state.  Sure, it's tiny.

You do in fact despise Palin and you need to learn to be intellectually honest.  You are also and elitist snob and a closet Leftist, especially with your own point #5.

You are also horrifically redundant.

Unsane, you label yourself

Submitted by tombaker on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 5:17am.

Unsane, you label yourself accurately.  It the population of the state of Alaska that is small, I am not talking square footage.   I don't dispise Sarah at all, I am just tired of the same only song and dance.  If Sarah had good ideas that could do something....she would be doing them as Governor.  It bogus to say it was financial....she already had the money from the book in line.

Sarah could not get the job done as Governor of Alaska, so its pretty easy to see she could not cut it as President.    She quit her job as Governor, cut and ran.   Again I want skills in the Executive office....not sing sony folksy BS about how we otta do this or that.

So continue to make excuses to why she could not handle finishing out her term....once a quiter a quiter to come again.

You are so tired

Submitted by Unsane on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 12:08pm.

tombaker, can you remind me three million more times about how much you hate Sarah Palin because she is a stupid quitter?

Your employer is clearly the Department of Redundancy Department, but unfortunately being repetitive does nothing to help your points.

That is a lousy excuse.  Many politicians quit their posts and were successful elsewhere in different political capacities.

The book deal you whine about would have only caused her more grief.  Don't believe me?  Ask Newt G_______  sometime about his book deal from 1995 when he was speaker.

And again, you show your elitist snobbery.  Fine, AK is small in population and that disqualifies the evil, stupid, quitter Sarah Palin, in your world.  Oddly, I never heard a PEEP about that in 2004 when Howard Dean was in the primaries - and he was a governor from a state that is not only geographically small, but a state with a population comparable to AK!

Just admit you hate Sarah Palin because you are an elitist snob, and in all likelyhood, a misogynist.

By the way, thanks for complementing me on my screen name.  I'm touched.  Deeply.  :o)

First, this lovely comment, Was it because she was a woman?  Who cares.... she could not finsh.

Obviously you care that she's a woman, or you wouldn't have written that.  Why is it only democrats are allowed to have women politicians?  Why is it Republican women are hit with that woman crap all the time?

Don't retreat, reload....You betcha (that is gonna get used against you....Palin you twit)
Is there any term or phrase used by a Republican that won't be used against them?  Why do you think the MSM is so focused on who the GOP candidate in 2012 will be, so they can start tearing them down now, whoever they are.  Palin has stood up quite nicely to these attacks against her and family.  There is no other politician in our country in the past 30 years that has faced what she has.

As far as failed politicians, I see Obama picked Joe Biden, a several times contender for the democrats presidential candidate as his VP.  How's that working out?

We agree in the double

Submitted by tombaker on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 5:30am.

We agree in the double standard....according to the MSM, Former Secretary of State Rice, was neither a woman or black.

The reload comment was foolish because it was done within the context of gun owners asserting their rights to carry.   If you were watching the insane Chris Matthews you could see him setting up the scenerio of a gunner who would then be blamed on Palin.   Yes its all BS, but its Politics too, and Palin is a newbie.

My point is that Palin used language that was ripe to be exploited against her and her party.  Her inexperience put her reputation and the tea party a step down.   I wiser person qualified for Executive office would not have such mistakes and giving the other side openings.

The MSM are going after Romney hard.   They go after him because he is a Mormon....not that they have any issue with it.....but as they say the Southern Evanglicals will hate him.   Religion Baiters.   And that he was successful in Mass as Governor.   I have not studied it but I don't hear a ton of examples being cited of the horrors of the Mass health care system.

Biden is a plaguarizer....that stepped him down from the Presidential race once.

Yes Palin is holding up well,  she is making money, and has an audience....but her record as Governor of Alaska speaks volumes....she could not handle the pressure of Executive office, she had to resign....she is doing very well now as someone without duties or deliveriables that comments on society.....as does Dear Abby.

tombaker, say three million more times that the evil, stupid Sarah Palin couldn't handle the pressure of executive office and that she had to resign.

She had to resign because being the governor of a state with a 90 minute flight time from its capital to its major population center (not even counting how much time it takes to fly from there to the closest portion of the lower 48) made things problematic for her in the national spotlight.  (Well, that's just my opinion, anyways.)

But no matter.  She could be governor of AK right now and you'd still be whining and complaining.

You just need to admit you are a misogynist, and an elitist snob, and this is why you hate Sarah Palin.  Being redundant isn't helping your cause at all.

I've seen this movie before.  Only in the version I last saw, Ross Perot was the shrieking populist on the stage.

Not to mention that running a business is a teensy bit different from running an organization which is best suited for killing people.  When the Trump properties make less money, people get smaller bonuses.  When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, it meant a teensy bit more to people in Warsaw than a tighter budget.

As far not being worried about consequences, I care about consequences deeply. Like the consequences of Obamacare, consequences of the national deficit, consequences of foreign terrorism, consequences of home grown terrorism and the fact that my state is pretty much broke. Sorry, moral issues go to end of the line for me when it comes to who I vote for next year.

This from a man who whines endlessly about Sarah Palin.  There is one thing she has done that Trump hasn't.

She has issued orders to AK NG members, knowing that when the AK NG carried out those orders, some of them would die.

Trump is a successful man but being President is completely different from running a business.  If one of his investments fails, his people (and himself) get smaller bonuses.  When Germany "outsold" France in June 1940, it meant a TEENSY bit more to Parisians than a tighter budget.

Is Sarah Palin above political criticism from other conservatives as well as from liberals? Absolutely not.

Is she above being the subject of rape jokes in national media or having her daughter get death threats for doing well on a TV reality show?  Definitely.

Submitted by tombaker on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 5:37am.

I think all the attacks on the family by Family Guy on Fox mocking her down syndrome child, and Letterman's shots her youngest daughter are terrible too.  And yes family should be out of it.   But after Bristol went on Dancing with Stars....and gives interviews about her new move to Arizona to E- News....and then the whole reality show by the family.....we Sarah has put her entire family out in TV land.

The attacks were nasty in so much as the double standard, as if Republican woman should not be treated like Democrat woman.    But Sarah and Family have basically put themselves out into the media...AFTER those events.

The only thing Sarah Palin can do to make you happy is to simply stop breathing, no doubt.  Sheesh.

Unsane's "Glee" theory

Submitted by Unsane on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 1:44am.

I think that Glee is a show for those who look fondly upon their high school years, or for those who are not far removed from them, or are IN them.

I've only seen previews, and have had friends gushing over it, so admittedly it is a observation made from afar.  Nonetheless, after all this long-winded babble of mine, I think your calling it a children's show might be closer to the truth than you suspect!

You forget the musical

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 6:06am.

You forget the musical viewpoint.  My wife and kids love musicals and Glee provides that part.  It does have some drama and is overacted and stereotypes abound.  I really don't like the homosexual emphasis my self and I hate musicals.

Agreed. If you checked out Glee's own website you'd see how many young people are posting and complaining about how the show is pushing its social and political agenda, and how many of these kids are vowing to stop watching.

What the H is Ryan Murhphy's problem? He's got a good story concept and wonderfully talented performers. Oh, that's right: He's an artiste, it's his duty to offend people.

Palin

Submitted by grammajane on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 10:39pm.

Why shouldn't Palin bad mouth and make sarcastic remarks about the msm. Look what they do to herself and her family. Is she just supposed to sit back and take it? I think not!! The msm  is so jealous of her fame and fortune they proceed to bash and terrorise her because that is all they know to do to a very popular person who doesn't agree with them.

Never Watch This Show

Submitted by DaMama on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 3:05am.

"Glee" is a love fest for liberals and anyone who wants to bash anything conservative or Christian.  This is no surprise that they would hire the likes of Kathy Griffin, the most vulgar woman on the planet, to make fun of Sarah Palin - AGAIN.

The liberals can't pass up any opportunity to make fun of Sarah Palin.  They are obsessed with the Palin family.  Seems that Kathy Griffin can't stop herself either.  Her obsessive hatred for the Palin's is beyond anything normal.

Griffin is one sorry excuse for an entertainer.

Submitted by tombaker on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 5:44am.

Griffin is a true POS, which is why its very pathetic that Anderson Cooper does the New Year's event with him each year.  I just wish Anderson would come out the closet already, his reporting of these Defense of Marriage stuff and Gays in the military, without disclosing that he is gay is a bit weak, yes its his business.....but the audience should understand his perspective since is a pundit.
