For the second weekday in a row, Katie Couric teased the CBS Evening News on Monday night by delivering President Obama's aggressive retorts to critics of his health plan as reporter Chip Reid pitched in to help, discrediting critics by disparaging their perspectives as “harsh” and “incendiary” attacks -- all before Couric caught up with ABC and NBC from the night before and promoted Ted Kennedy's “We're Almost There” Newsweek cover story.
Couric teased: “The President takes on critics of his health care reform plan. He vows to move forward and says trying to fix a system that's breaking American families.” (Friday night she touted “a warning from the President,” leading into Obama's claim: “If we don't get health care reform done now, then no one's health insurance is going to be secure.”)
Reid declared that “in some of his harshest comments yet, Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele said the President's plan for a public insurance option is socialism.” But this is all Steele said in the clip Reid played: “This reckless approach is an ill-conceived attempt to push through an experiment and all of us should be scared to death.” Reid continued: “In one of the most incendiary comments, Republican Senator Jim DeMint, in a conference call with conservative activists, recently said:” Viewers then heard audio of DeMint making a tactical political point: “If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.”
Following Reid, Couric trumpeted Kennedy's “behind the scenes” efforts via this week's Newsweek: “Senator Edward Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, is too ill to lead the fight for health care reform in person, but he is working behind the scenes. In Newsweek magazine, he writes: 'I am resolved to see to it this year that we create a system to ensure that someday, when there is a cure for the disease I now have, no American who needs it will be denied it.'”
Reid did at least note that “it's not just Republicans who are giving the President headaches” as “dozens of conservative House Democrats are threatening to block the bill if it doesn't slash the expected costs of well over a trillion dollars.”
ABC's Jake Tapper and NBC's Chuck Todd also highlighted DeMint and Obama's criticism of the South Carolina Senator, but without the pejorative language (“incendiary comment”) applied by Reid.
(In his World News piece, Tapper uniquely highlighted how a hospital Obama cites is opposed to the Democratic plan: “Some bad news came for the President from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, which the President has repeatedly praised as a hospital where high quality health care is offered at a lower cost. The clinic said of the House Democrats' bill: 'The proposed legislation misses the opportunity to help create higher-quality, more affordable health care for patients. In fact, it will do the opposite.'” Tapper's “Political Punch” blog on the Mayo blog.)
My Saturday NewsBusters item, “CBS Spins Setback for Obama on Health Into 'Warning from the President,'” recounted:
A night after CBS and NBC skipped the assessment from the chief of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that the Senate and House health plans won't meet President Obama's pledge to not increase deficit spending, the two networks caught up only when Obama, reacting to “anxiety” even from Democrats, addressed the setback to his quest late Friday. CBS anchor Katie Couric spun the bad news for Obama into “a warning” from him about the ominous fate which awaits Americans if he does not succeed.
“Also tonight, a warning from the President,” she teased Friday's CBS Evening News before a clip of Obama with a very suspect claim: “If we don't get health care reform done now, then no one's health insurance is going to be secure.” Couric introduced the story by portraying Obama as the hero trying to reach a noble goal: “President Obama today continued his hard sell for health care reform, but he also had to do a little doctoring, treating a case of sticker shock over the latest proposals for insuring nearly every American.”
My Sunday night post, “Nets Plug Kennedy's 'Dramatic' and 'Emotional Pitch for Health Care Reform,'” related:
Newsweek engaged itself deeper in the battle for nationalized health care by turning over its cover story -- “We're Almost There” -- to Senator Ted Kennedy for his lengthy personal recitation of “the cause of my life.” ABC and NBC on Sunday night dutifully championed his cause as World News anchor Dan Harris highlighted how “Kennedy is using his own battle against brain cancer to make an emotional pitch for health care reform” and NBC reporter Mike Viqueira touted:
Today, another dramatic push, this time from an ailing Ted Kennedy, absent from Washington but appearing on the cover of Newsweek and writing: “This is the cause of my life. We will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not just a privilege.”
The health care story on the Monday, July 20 CBS Evening News:
KATIE COURIC: President Obama is waging an all-out battle for health care reform. The fear at the White House is he's losing momentum as the opposition gets louder. So if you thought you've been seeing a lot of the President on television already, get ready for a whole lot more. Here's our chief White House correspondent, Chip Reid.
CHIP REID: With congressional opposition on the rise and public support slipping, the President today tried to get health care reform back on track.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: There are too many families who will be crushed if insurance premiums continue to rise three times as fast as wages.
REID: The Democratic Party came to his support-
MAN IN TV AD: When I lost my job, I lost my health insurance, too.
REID: -with TV ads aimed at wavering Senators, mostly Democrats, in eight states.
MAN IN AD: It's time.
WOMAN IN AD: It's time for health care reform.
REID: Republicans fired back with their own ad campaign.
ANNOUNCER IN TV AD: A risky experiment with our health care.
REID: And, in some of his harshest comments yet-
MICHAEL STEELE, RNC CHAIRMAN: It's too much, too fast.
REID: -Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele said the President's plan for a public insurance option is socialism.
MICHAEL STEELE: This reckless approach is an ill-conceived attempt to push through an experiment and all of us should be scared to death.
REID: In one of the most incendiary comments, Republican Senator Jim DeMint, in a conference call with conservative activists, recently said:
AUDIO OF DeMINT: If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.
REID: Today the President accused DeMint of using the health reform debate for political gain.
OBAMA: This isn't about politics. This is about a health care system that's breaking America's families.
REID: But it's not just Republicans who are giving the President headaches.
REP. MIKE ROSS, (D) ARKANSAS: We need to slow down.
REID: Dozens of conservative House Democrats are threatening to block the bill if it doesn't slash the expected costs of well over a trillion dollars.
ROSS: Develop a bill that can really result in the kind of savings that will cause health care to stop growing.
REID: Others are resisting the President's goal of passing a bill by early August.
SENATOR KENT CONRAD, (D) NORTH DAKOTA: Sometimes when you move too quickly you make mistakes. That, to me, is the big concern.
REID: Today, the President said he still wants the House and Senate to meet that August deadline for passing their initial bills, but he gave himself a little bit of wiggle room. He said that it may spill over a few days or a week. Katie?
COURIC: So is there a growing feeling at the White House, Chip, that the President might have set expectations for expediency a bit too high?
REID: Well, you would certainly think so, Katie, with the polls coming down, with the criticism just flowing in from Republicans and even some Democrats really nervous about the bill and this timeline, you would think that they would back off. But, Katie, they have not. They really are as confident as ever here at the White House that this is going to pass. And if it doesn't pass right on the deadline, it won't be much behind it.
COURIC: Alright, Chip Reid at the White House tonight. Thank you, Chip. Senator Edward Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, is too ill to lead the fight for health care reform in person, but he is working behind the scenes. In Newsweek magazine, he writes: “I am resolved to see to it this year that we create a system to ensure that someday, when there is a cure for the disease I now have, no American who needs it will be denied it.”
And tomorrow night I'll have an interview with President Obama about health care reform and much more.

I have watched her twice, once when Rush was supposed to be on with a rebuttal or some such to a commentary section she had at the end of her news show when she first started, and seems like something happened to that, so I had to watch it again when he was on.
Anyway, now that I have messed that up...it was only twice...and that was all...period.

I urge others to do as I do and contact these brave senators such as DeMint and other congressmen/women across the country just to say 'thanks' for standing up for their convictions. It fortifies me to deal with the futile calls to the offices of the senatorsK where their staff are anything but welcoming, and with the knowledge that the senatorsK couldn't care less what their constituents think. I'd love to know the ratio of yea/nay calls, but again, I know it will not sway them one hair's breadth! After all, 'don't we know who they are'!!!!!! They are two of the most arrogant members of Congress and have their agenda set in stone...after all, they know what is 'best' for the great unwashed masses!
By the way, hope everyone has been calling the Capitol switchboard number regarding these horrible bills. I have and it's been busy busy busy - just keep hitting the redial ;-) May it crash again!

DeMint Needs a Memory.
Mon, 07/20/2009 - 22:10 ET by pbthinkerDeMint better remember he's a Republican. A Democrat could get away with this and have it never reported. All anyone has to say about this is the truth. It's Obama's plan and he's been willing to push it through without any Republican support. I can understand how frustrating it is for the republicans right now, but they need to be patient. The Democrats are imploding, so let them.
The republicans can put all of this behind them, in 2010, if they play it right and just let the Democrats be Democrats. They won't get any help from the MSM and they MSM will blow up anything they say, if they believe it will hurt them. Just remember 2 things, "The Culture of Corruption" and "Macaca" both carried out by the Democrats with a great deal of assistance from the MSM. Barack Obama would not be president today, if it weren't for the MSM.
One more thing, ABC news just had a 2-1/2 hour lovefest with Obama on this same healthcare legislation so why have the polls on this gone down since then? Well, do you think they could have asked some of the tough questions so the President would realize he can't just shove another one through Congress?

When did it happen that
Tue, 07/21/2009 - 00:02 ET by RR GOPWhen did it happen that city and county hospitals became so crappy that private hospitals are preferable? Obviously because lousy private hospitals go out of business...or may not if it's the only one within a hundred miles...but government hospitals survive through subsidies/taxation.
Choice. Just not there for many Americans. If you get one 'good' hospital in your area, it's going to be flooded with patients. You may have only one hospital near you and if it's terrible then you might have to go God knows how far for better care. If it's an emergency, something catastrophic, then obviously most people will end up in whatever hospital is closest.
Private businesses often rip off their customers, accentuate the positives and downplay the negatives, coordinate to fix pricing, tell you to get lost if they don't feel they need your business. This is especially true they have you over a barrel. If your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, you don't have much choice but to have Goober tow it to his fillin' station and he'll charge whatever he feels like to fix it...and then some.
(actually Goober was a decent man-just an illustration using a classist stereotype ;-)

Why, given their record, does anyone in their right mind want to give control of15-20% of our economy to these authoritarian marxists? Because on a class warfare basis it will be "free"? Freeze the cost, give the employees the premiums, remove interstate sale rstrictions, limit mandatesand provide help for those who really need it, after the existing programs are fully enrolled, create price transparency and you'll have a functioning market. That disease being a bleeding heart. The cure may be a bucket of ice cold reality applied to the face.
He need look no further than his home state (not Oz -- the other one -- the People's Republic of Massachusetts) to see the damaging side-effects of state-sponsored/state-mandated health care. It is not fiscally sustainable; the medical care costs are reportedly the highest in the US; and still some 2-3% of citizens have no health insurance. Moreover, the state is reportedly dropping 30,000 legal residents (non-citizens) from coverage.
