FNC Discusses NBC's Coverage of China

Saturday's Fox News Watch devoted a few minutes to the controversy, which was documented previously by the MRC's Geoffrey Dickens, over NBC's Matt Lauer claiming during an interview for the Today show that "some very high percentage of the people in China are happy with their lot in life, something around 80 percent," but that in America, "only about 25 percent." Liberal panelist Patricia Murphy of Citizen Jane stated her belief that Lauer simply made an "error" in misstating a Pew Research poll which found that, when asked if they were "satisfied with the direction of the country," 86 percent of Chinese respondents said yes, but when asked about "personal satisfaction," that "the number was much, much lower."

Conservative columnist Jim Pinkerton theorized NBC was being soft on China because the network is making money off the Olympics: "Could it be because NBC paid China a billion dollars to cover the Olympics? And they can't afford to have their reporters and sportscasters kicked out for telling the truth about China. So they have no choice but to cover up." (Transcript follows)

A summary of the Pew survey referred to by Murphy, which can be found here, observes: "The new Pew Global Attitudes survey also finds that most Chinese citizens polled rate many aspects of their own lives favorably, including their family life, their incomes and their jobs. However, levels of personal satisfaction are generally lower than the national measures, and by global standards Chinese contentment with family, income and jobs is not especially high."

Below is a complete transcript of the discussion from the Saturday, August 9, Fox News Watch on FNC:

MATT LAUER, TODAY SHOW CO-HOST: There's a recent poll that said some very high percentage of the people in China are happy with their lot in life, something around 80 percent. You compare that to polls in the United States that say only about 25 percent of Americans are. What's the root of their happiness here?

JON SCOTT: Well, since that interview aired on NBC, Matt Lauer and NBC have been criticized for that precise question. Cal, as we were playing it, you're shaking your head there. Is he a booster for-?

CAL THOMAS, CONSERVATIVE COLUMNIST: Hey, the only answer is that we all become Communist, then we'll all be happy. I mean, he didn't say who did this poll. This reminds me of some of these alleged polls and surveys done at the beginning of the civil rights movement. Some of these white Southern racists say, "Well, what do you mean? Black people down here are perfectly happy just the way they are." This is total garbage.

SCOTT: Yeah. They don't have Internet access, their air is foul, and most of them ride bicycles, but it's pretty good to be in China, I guess.

PATRICIA MURPHY, CITIZEN JANE: I think the problem here, Matt Lauer made an error. This was a Pew poll. The question was: Are you satisfied with the direction of the country? And 86 percent of Chinese said yes. There were 3,000 Chinese interviewed in person by Pew staff. Now, the real question they also asked Chinese citizens: Are you personally satisfied? Do you have personal satisfaction? The number was much, much lower. So I think that Matt Lauer just made an error in there. I hope it was just that.

JIM PINKERTON, CONSERVATIVE COLUMNIST: So why did he make that error, I wonder? Could it be because NBC paid China a billion dollars to cover the Olympics? And they can't afford to have their reporters and sportscasters kicked out for telling the truth about China. So they have no choice but to cover up.

SCOTT: Jane, do they have a vested interest in trying to make China or the Olympics look good?

JANE HALL, AMERICAN UNIVERSITY: I think they've got a real problem on their hands if, you know, if they're going to try to cover the reeducation camps, the dissidents who have been packed away so that nobody can see them. I mean, China is a mixed picture. I mean, there is progress there. But I don't know how you can cover the Olympics and not cover anything else. But I don't see NBC not covering sports 24/7.

interesting

Hubby's been making me watch the Olympics (gag) and I've noticed that all the reporters/commentators keep dumping on the American athletes and going on about how great the Chinese are.

while we enjoy the olympics

I've noticed the same thing.  They are overly critical of mistakes, (like when one of our gymnasts stepped outside the line: "SHE WAS WAY OUTSIDE") then the replay shows she was JUST BARELY outside.....

Or when we win against other countries they act suprised.

The most disgusting thing?  When Bush was interviewed, and he was going on and on with his anti-americanism.  Bush totally smoked that interviewer BTW.  Made me proud of my country and of Bush. especially this question:

"Do you think America is in a position to influence China, with all the Problems in America?"

"I don't seen any problems in America, and yes I do think we can influence China".

RIGHT ON!

NBC open to payoffs?

Does this mean NBC can be paid to do things like not bashing their own country or presenting their biased opinions as objective reporting?

www.benbarrack.com

Cal's Heartburn

What you can't show here are the looks on Cal Thomas' face when Patricia Murphy made her two  liberal comments that hung in the air on that set.

He couldn't hide his disgust (and he didn't try very hard) and it was priceless.

This disgrace is no

This disgrace is no different than CNN covering up facts and news from Iraq prior to and during the initial phases of the war. CNN and NBC are nothing more than an amateur version of the old PRAVDA, and their reporters are on a much lower level than Tokyo Rose, who at least had patriotic motives.

As far as I am concerned, virtually every so called journalist from CNN, NBC and MSDCN as well as most print media, especially any with the words TIMES or NEWSWEEK in their names are nothing short of treasonous slime.

They are patriotic!

To our enemies.

:)

Communists are always happy

Even when eating dirt and wearing rags, they have smiling faces. Just like was portrayed in the old Soviet Union.

Just like what Obama, Pelosi, Reid wants for the USA. Be happy eat s...

YEP.

I was going to post this as well.  When marxist leftist reporters visited Russia, they ALWAYS came back with glowing reports of how GREAT the socialist system was working in Russia, and covering up the death camps!

There is nothing new under the sun.

China is paradise!!!!

Lauer's fantasy answer to his question.

MATT LAUER, TODAY SHOW CO-HOST: There's a recent poll that said some

life, something around 80 percent. You compare that to polls in the

Liberal guest:  Well, Matt, the Chinese don't have to live under the incompetence, the lies, and the disregard for the law that we have under Chimpy McHitler....uh, I mean George W. Bush.  And they don't have to fear the election of a John McCain, who will simply continue the fascistic policies of the current administration.  Heck, if McCain wins, I'll be moving to China!

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Is anyone covering the deaths in and distruction of Georgia?

As the world watches China and the "games", Russia has invaded the Free Republic of Georgia, is killing her people, is sending war ships to the Baltic Sea, while the head of Georgia is begging for help on CNN, and the WORLD is PLAYING GAMES!

What the hell is going ON? HOW can the leaders of the "Free" world let this go uninterrupted?

The United States and NATO should drop a big something on Russia and get them to knock this crap off.

I am livid.

Russia is allowed to arm IRAN, arm Chavez, talk of sending missles to Cuba agian, and we are PLAYING F'N GAMES!!

PING PONG MY A$$

The MSM wants the old Soviet Union to reassemble.

The MSM wants the old Soviet Union to reassemble.

That way, there will be a country powerful enough to check the aggression and hubris of the United States.

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

Free, I think the Cold War is headed for Round II.

It is no secret that many former GRU and KGB types have been working to regain the "prestige" of the former USSR, as they have never really gotten over the fall of The Wall.

I think this is their first overt move at attempting to reassemble the Evil Empire. I doubt it will be the last.

Why hasn't GWB spoken out on this?

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

R D

I'll just bet that the Ukraine can not wait to join NATO . . . and teh sooner, the better.

Why hasn't GWB spoken out on this?

He's acting like a doofus too! :-(

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

Free, the Ukrainians better hurry...

...as I believe they are next on the Kremlin's hit list.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

R D - You're probably right . . .

Although I'm more worried about the fact that World War II started 3 years after Nazi Germany hosted the Olympics . . .

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

Free, I agree.

If both Russia and China get seriously belligerent at the same time, the West could very well find itself in a mell of a hess.

And that right quickly, too.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

W speaking out

Apparently Bush did give a speech in China where he condemned Russia today. And America has done one small token to help - Russia had the nerve to try to get NATO to condemn Georgia, and we prevented that from happening.

But lip service aside, unless someone steps up to defend Georgia they will lose.

Nice that Bush spoke up. I

Nice that Bush spoke up. I guess it's too much to ask for military assistance though . . . :-(

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

It gets worse

What we should also be upset about is how at least one prominent conservative views this matter. On the Friday edition of Special Report, Charles Krauthammer said that this would be resolved quickly by the Russians because "Russia is strong and Georgia is weak." This was after he commented that it was a good thing that Georgia had not been admitted to NATO, because if she had then NATO would be obliged to defend her from the Russian invasion.

Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't this the very type of circumstance that NATO was created to prevent? If Russia knew that NATO was the guarantor of Georgian sovereignty, does anyone actually believe this invasion would have occured? I wrote about this at my blog if anyone would like to check it out: http://flagwaver.blogtownhall.com/2008/08/08/putins_powerplay.thtml

But at least the President has condemned the actions of the Russians, and despite what they are saying the world knows they are the aggressors here.

americaneagle

Charles Krauthammer is SO WRONG!

I heard him say that as well and almost fell over.

A member of NATO or not, Georgia should have our HELP no matter what.

This is a power play that has to be put down. Putin is a small man with a huge ego. He needs to be spanked, humiliated, and shown to be the danger he is.

Hopefully, the President is, behind the scenes, doing something more than talk.

His condemnations are important but in this instance, actions will speak louder than words.

I agree that the Kremlin is

I agree that the Kremlin is on the march. There have been signs of this for awhile, i.e. various statements by Putin, acquiring energy resources and precious metals, solidifying Russia's economy, expanded manufacturing, warnings to former satellite nations to stay out of NATO etc.

For Russian support of his current actions, Putin is taking advantage of a well known Russian fear--an enemy invasion via Russia's vunerable south. The attacks of the Ottoman Turks, the Mongols (who ravaged the duchy of Moscow) and, of course, the Nazis in WW II are branded in Russian memories.

Putin sees himself as a modern day Tzar or csar (Russian for Caesar--which is a political title, not the name of a Roman emperor, i.e. Caesar Augustus, or Caesar Tiberius). He is on the move to reacquire eastern Europe, and this is just the beginning of a major conflict that will involve many countries.

In a sense, Putin's move is the new chapter in the Cold War, which of course, never really ended.

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

Free,

He's acting like a doofus too!

I am seriously beginning to wonder if he is just acting.

The United States (supposedly the most powerful military power on the planet) has now spent over five years (half a decade) trying to beat down a bunch of poorly armed, 7th-century illiterate camel-washers in Afghanistan and Iraq. During that time, the Russians and the Chinese have been busy beefing up their respective militaries in a big way.

The armies of Russia, and particularly China, are far more formidable than those of Allah.

We, on the other hand, are dealing with a tired military and a population that is becoming rather war-weary.

I'd say Vlad's timing in all this has been quite good.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

R D

I agree with much of your post.

However the US crushed the Iraq army in a few weeks.  The Taliban fell apart before the US forces were fully engaged.

An insurgency is very difficut for a large powerful army to defeat.

Witness the success of the surge with its new counterinsurgency doctrine.

I believe the US Army is in no shape to fight a large land war.  The US Army is no longer large enough.

yep

It's sad that our allies rely on us to protect them to such a degree, that they felt secure in disbanding large parts of their own militaries.

Besides like I posted above, moving to support Georgia could start nuclear war.....

The Russians

started trying to bring in "breakaway" republics in 1994. That was when they first invaded Chechnya, which had declared its independence in 1991. The same year Georgia declared independence.

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love youBut if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

Don Marquis 1878-1937

he has spoken out on this

And really what do you expect him to do?  Remember the Kremlin has nukes.  If we do ANYTHING to support Georgia they will see it an as act of war and launch nukes our way.   WE HAVE TO be extremely careful in how we support Georgia.  As much as that sucks, it is the simple truth of the matter.

Oh they don't want any such

Oh they don't want any such thing.

These developments are bad, but I'm not sure bombing Russia is the right response.

bal, sorry, pal, but you are in way, WAY over your head here.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

Well, tough, R D. I'm not

Well, tough, R D. I'm not afraid of the water.

So, you think we should start bombing Russia, then?

bal, nobody is seriously suggesting bombing Russia.

What is going on in Georgia is not the action of the Russian people, but of a handful of GRU and KGB leftovers in positions of power who haven't been able to come to grips with the fact that the USSR is no more.

If the West stands idly by and does nothing (as it appears they are going to) the Russians will be further emboldened and will be going after the Ukraine next.

And that will still not be the end of it, either.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

I sure don't think we should

I sure don't think we should do nothing, and I assume Dubyah's doing something. But I was reacting to this from Delsa:

"The United States and NATO should drop a big something on Russia and get them to knock this crap off."

But that might have just been frustration on her part at the lack of action from anyone.

I think you're reading that correctly

Delsa did say that she was highly ticked off and wondering why no one seemed to care.

As far as Dubya doing something, I suspect he'll probably do about as much as he did during the Lebanon war in 2006 - "um, yeah, so, you all should stop doing that now."

candance, where is Harry S. Truman when we need him?

He would tolerate this crap for about five minutes.

Georgia has been very supportive of us in the GWOT. I hope we don't screw them over the same way we have other allies in our past.

If we do, will anyone ever trust us again?

I certainly wouldn't.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

you're right Dave

From what I read they've recalled about 2,000 troops from Iraq since the last week. They were there putting their lives on the line for the people of Iraq. I wonder if anyone will do the same for them.

candance, can't say I blame them.

Their home country is at risk of being swallowed up by the Russians.

This is rather telling, but not in a good way:

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin cut short his visit to the Olympics and
flew on Saturday to a field hospital in North Ossetia, part of Russia on the
other side of the border of South Ossetia. Mr Putin denounced what he termed
Georgia's "crimes against its own people". US President George W
Bush was still in Beijing yesterday watching the Olympics.

Oh, well.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

disappointing

Either Bush was caught off guard by this (unlikely) underestimated what would happen (very likely) or simply has no plans of doing more until prodded (also likely).

SIGH

What do you expect him to do?  march our army in there and start a nuclear war?  He's Spoken against it and told Vladimir to knock it off.

" Minister Vladimir Putin cut short his visit to the Olympics and
flew on Saturday to a field hospital in North Ossetia, part of Russia on the
other side of the border of South Ossetia. Mr Putin denounced what he termed
Georgia's "crimes against its own people".
"

Do you expect Bush to fly to Georgia and support them?  That'd be a political disaster.  We have to be VERY careful in how we deal with Russia.  Yeah it sucks.

It sucks that we are the ONLY power in the world that has the MORAL power to do something about this.

It sucks that Russia WILL respond with Nuclear force if we militarily help Georgia.

It sucks that China (who has the power but not the morals) will do AND SAY nothing about this.

I agree mbuel and our Power has been politically stiffled

by the American left who has given the rest of the world reason to believe if we do respond it will be for nefarious reasons. Russia would not be acting this way if the left hadn't turned the American people against Bush with their lies and distortions. We are the world bad guy now and anything bad that happens is all our fault.

sad but true

You are exactly right.  The left (the "new" progressives) have lied about this administration and peddled anti-americanism for the last eight years.

R D...I'll tell you where Give'em hell Harry is.

He's up there giving Dick Nixon another ass-kicking for calling him a coward sixty years ago.

Jer

*is intrigued*

I've never heard a story about Nixon doing that. Spill!

candance...

I fudged just a little bit.  My recollection is that Nixon referred to Truman's "containment" [of Soviet expansionism] policy as the "three C's"--Cowardly Communist Containment.  In fact, the policy was a remarkable success.

Jer

Jer, LMAO!

Their are a lot of terms that can be used to describe Harry S. Truman, but coward is not among them. Not even close.

LOL-And the mental picture of Truman kicking Tricky Dick's ass is priceless.

At least Harry S. actually won his war.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

Bal, I love ya

I did not mean the big  BOMB.

I do mean drop a big hammer!

Maybe by helping to block the russian navy in the Black sea or drop a few small bombs along the boarder to make the bastards think twice before continuing their push across Georgia.

Russia has called for the President of Georgia to step down!

This cannot stand.

Better to have it out now than to let Russia roll.

We need a blocking tactic. The world needs a Blocking tactic.

If we and the world allow this, what else will we let slide?

I agree. Give them an inch,

I agree. Give them an inch, etc. And as you said, hopefully W is doing something behind the scenes while enjoying the Olympics.

And maybe W is doing

And maybe W is doing something: Bush, Cheney signal support for Georgia

that's a start

It's good to hear them talking about helping Georgia. Now time will tell how Bush plans to follow through.

Thanks for the link Bal

Interesting.

Is it too late for Cheney to run for President?

just sayin

I'm sorry bal

I know you mean well and I'm not trying to be unreasonable BUT...

-I remember the MSM reports from the early 90s of how much better life was in eastern Europe before the wall fell and how that crazy old man Reagan was bullying the USSR. You cannot convince me they've forgiven Reagan for destroying the old soviet union.

-These developments are bad? How bad? A ruthless leader like Putin has conveniently found a way to pick a fight with a tiny country that just so happens to control a major oil pipeline - and all you can say is that it's bad?

-While I agree that outrightly bombing Moscow wouldn't work, why can't the UN (you know, that body that cares sooooo much about human rights) deploy some troops to at least assist Georgia in defending themselves from invasion?

It's funny how lefties scream and wail when they percieve America "breaking international law" but I don't see the global peace rallies we saw before the invasion of Iraq.

candance

1. The MSM has no collective consciousness that forgives or doesn't forgive Reagan. I can't imagine anyone who doesn't think the world is better without the USSR, _including_ the dreaded MSM.

2. I knew someone would complain about my use of "bad." I can never get the appropriate adjective with you guys. It's never the right one.

3. That sounds reasonable to me.

lol bal sorry

You'll have to forgive us - we get really emotional when stuff like this happens and suddenly you discover that all those speeches about "respecting a nation's sovereignty" only apply to countries America is at war with.

The rest of the world proves, once again, that they don't give a fart about protecting their fellow man.

But I still think you're wrong about the USSR. The way America lefties fawn over Cuba and Venezuela, if the soviet union was still there they'd still be doing Ted Turneresque documentaries.

Delsa, It appears Vlad the Putinator is up to something.

This looks to have been planned well in advance, too. Curious how it all got cranked up while the world's attention is elsewhere.

Maybe W needs to dial up his buddy over in the Kremlin and at least ask Vlad (a former KGB officer) what exactly he is trying to accomplish with all this.

We owe the people of Georgia more than just lip-service, and quite honestly, they haven't even gotten that from the Bush people so far.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

it's scary Dave

The latest on the story is that Georgia withdrew from S.O. after being overwhelmed by Russian forces. However when the Georgian army turned to go back to mainland Georgia, some Russian tanks followed them across the new border and attempted to head for the city of Gori. The Georgian army put up a stand and repelled the tanks back across the border.

So both sides are fixed on the border. Russia says they won't leave the border until Georgia does, and vice versa.

Russia keeps justifying their actions by saying "Georgia tricked us into it" but I wouldn't trust the Kremlin with a bottle of Pepsi.

They are up to something and I got a real bad feeling.

candance, Russia is essentially trying to absorb Georgia.

After all, the Georgian's move to join NATO did not sit well with the Kremlin kritters.

As for Putin, he is following the age-old tactic of trying to make it look like the other side started it.

Hitler used this tactic to his advantage several times. By the time the rest of the world figures out what really happened, it will be too late-just as it was for the unfortunate Poles in 1939.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

Sudetenland

No worries.

The Sudetenland, er, I mean the Ukraine, is Putin's last territorial claim.

of course Free

That's all Russia wants. There can be peace in our time, there really can!

Unforetunately, the libs

Unforetunately, the libs fail to understand that the Communist definition of peace is "zero resistance". :-(

delsa I agree

Russia is attempting to blockade the Black Sea and now the Ukraine is saying they won't let Russian ships come back into their waters.

From what I understand Russia is in a hurry to get rid of Georgia because they've applied to be part of NATO - and also to get control of the oil pipeline that ends in the Mediterranean.

They could be setting up for a major confrontation with the West.

I very much doubt the people in Georgia care about the Olympics right now.

candance

"They could be setting up for a major confrontation with the West."

I agree.  I believe there is a very dangerous chess game going on.

I read recently Russia is planing on moving thier military back into Cuba and thier "Bear" nuclear bombers are flying off our coasts.

sick puppy, candance...

sick puppy, candance... What needs to happen here is that while bush is calling for Russia to withdraw from Georgia, that one Aircraft Carrier and a few destroyers are steaming towards the Black Sea area. F117's and some 'visiable' aircraft are hammering hades out of the Russsians in Georgia. Dragon and Tow's should be in route to Georgia, not to mention the shoulder fired stingers. A few SeALS and Green Berets and a Company of Rangers should be incountry conducting training.

Leave it to the Russians on how high they wish to elevate the confilct. Agressive invasion cannot be allowed to reestablish the Soviet Block.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Yep, anything NBC can do to

Yep, anything NBC can do to promote their new partner, Barack Ob....er, China...

Did anyone else catch the

Did anyone else catch the NBC reporter on the Sunday "Today" program in DC say to Lester Holt (who is in Bejing), "You guys are in a much better place right now"?

Pretty much sums it up.

Just watched Bush with

Just watched Bush with Costas, was very good both fan wise and politcal wise. Bush relaxed, honest and frank about our relations with China and everyone else realy well. Bush was so cool, just an honest fan, love this guy. He has been at MANY events, so cool for the athleats. What is their to hate about this guy? Geezzz,

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

NBCs coverage..just think of two letters::: gee eee GE

and that is all you have to say.....and I have also noticed in some of immelts interviews/statements over the past 6 months...he is green

and a quiet supporter of BHO

Paarl of Rhodesia...definitely not green..owner of 3 diesel vehicles

BHO the world Citizen should go make a speech in Georgia

Not Georgia in the USA...the one with the bomobs dropping....BHO can take care if it....someone write him a speech that can stop a War.

Meanwhile, the MSM is taking the opportunity to do DRIVE BY International opinion reporting ad nauseum.  Since the MSM has been in China for a Few days....they are experts and know everything...just ask them.

The Republican Revolution will not be Televised

Stay Matt

Matt, if you think that is what the poll says why don't you just stay there. Or, and since Pinkerton is probably right about the Billion, how about when you come back we hear some stories about the REAL China.

Unfortunatly we do need to hit Russia

We can hit them at the boarder with Georgia and meet them in the Baltic Sea.

There is a very important pipeline running through Georgia. Whoever controls it controls a great deal of Europe.

I agree Vlad  had this planned. He left the "games" and is at the point of Russian impact to "help with the refugee problem"?

And if you believe that I will be happy to sell you swamp land here in sunny Florida.

He is directing the events.

You are correct R D.

Being at the games gave Putin plausible deniability. At least in the short run.

I want BUSH to get off his happy little butt, get out of China, take his plane to Brussels, and call a NATO Summit ie: War Council.

They ALL need to start rattling the weapons. Russia has to spanked and spanked hard.

As I understand it, Russia issued passports to the folks on the boarder in Georgia and that was hit by Russia first. This lets Russia claim that they are citizens of Russia who need their help.

If Russia does not pay for this in a big way? Katie bar the door. All hell is going to break loose.

If Ukraine traps the Russians in the Baltic sea, It will give the United States time to get some Warships in to help.

This is NO time for pussy footin around.

Delsa, I agree with most

Delsa, I agree with most of your points, except for one. I do not think we are going to do anything (except protest etc) to physically stop Russia's invasion.

The whole thing is very much like Russia's invasion of Hungary in 1956. The Hungarians really believed they could rely on us to help them hold off the Russians. After a few days of killing and destruction, they realized we were not going to lift a finger to help them. People on the streets of Budapest were heard asking "Where are the Americans??" The whole episode was very strange and very much, as I say, like the current situation.

The other interesting aspect of the invasion is the timing, as many have said here.

My guess (only a guess for sure) is that Putin has decided the inexperienced Barack (and whomever he brings into the White House) will win the election, and therefore the US will not be a problem with Putin's plans to re-expand the Russian empire. Barack will make all the wrong decisions, and the State Department and DoD will be essentially tangled up in their own underwear when it comes to dealing with Putin. Nato will be neutralilzed by the threat of shutting off the oil and natural gas supplies to Europe and Putin will threaten the US with the suggestion he will call out the US Bonds Russia owns ( a LOT!) and threaten an economic meltdown. Very clever, indeed.

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

I'm with celator

It took America 30 years to get serious about the Cold War. And as much as Bush is compelled to stop Al Qaeda, he doesn't involve us in anything else unless it threatens American property.

In short I will be surprised if anyone sends extra troops into Georgia.

candance, the Georgian people deserve our help.

Should we fail them, then shame on GWB, and on us, too.

I cannot help but remember that GHWB screwed the Iraqi Kurds over in much the same way GWB appears to be willing to do to the Georgians.

If we have one willing ally left when this is over, I will be seriously surprised.

Dave.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

RD - unfortunately the American left has weakened us so much

with their distortion and lies that the rest of the world would see any thing we did to help as war mongering. It's really a shame. If the left hadn't thrown our country under the bus for the sake of power, none of this would be happening.

Russia wouldn't want to mess with a united U.S. that was led by Bush. The Dems can be proud. Their campaign to demonize the U.S. has worked and they got more and will get more power. Russia will walk all over Obama.

Dee, not only will Russia walk all over Obama...

...China will eat his lunch.

And ours, too.

I liked it much better back when we didn't care what the rest of the world thought, as if the rest of the world has ever lifted a finger to help us in any way to speak of.

Dave.

We are not going to save this country by being polite to those who are working tirelessly (and succeeding right handily) at destroying it.

Right Dave

Can I call you that now since you sign with it? I'll probably go back and forth because I'm used to the RD now.

The only thing that will make the rest of the world love us is if we become insignificant failures. They have never liked us and they never will. By us I mean mostly our government. We are an easy scapegoat for all the problems in the world. We either don't act enough or too much - there will never be a level that they are completely satisfied with.

candance...I hate to pull

candance...I hate to pull the age card on you, but you weren't around for most of the Cold War.  I was.  For all of it.  Believe me...it was serious, and we were serious.

Oh, Shy...

You mean when I was being called a "baby killer" earlier...that was actually you guys going easy on me?

When was candance born...1981?  She has literally no memory of the Cold War.  So I refuse to let some youngster tell me, who was personally digging a fallout shelter in my backyard when I was 14, that we weren't serious about it. :-)

But, I love candance, would swap ages with her in a heartbeat...and yes, she is very eloquent.

Jer

Jer?

When were you given a "drama queen" steroid injection? :p

All this italicizing of words... and that was one staunch pro-life member on here, if I recall, who actually called you a "baby-killer". The rest just defended their abortion issue but didn't attack you with that name, so "you guys" is a
