Matt Lauer from Beijing: Chinese Happier Than Americans

Update at bottom of post.

In a pre-taped segment, delivered from the Forbidden City in Beijing, NBC's Matt Lauer pointed out a poll that showed the Chinese are happier than Americans and repeated his line that protestors could be seen as "party crashers," on Tuesday's "Today" show.

During an interview with NBC News China analyst, Joshua Cooper Ramo, Lauer made the following observation:

LAUER: There's a recent poll that said some very high percentage of the people in China are happy with their lot in life. Something around 80 percent. You compare that to polls in the United States that say only about 25 percent of Americans are, what's the root of their happiness here?

Then a little later in the segment the "Today" co-host, repeating an earlier worry he made on Monday's program, declared the average Chinese citizen would disapprove of any protests:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

LAUER: And the average citizen who may, in principle, agree with the ideology of a protest, might that person, at this particular time say, "No you're not gonna spoil our party, it's inappropriate?"

Incidentally, before the Lauer segment Andrea Mitchell reported, from Washington, on many of China's problems including its treatment of dissidents, its pollution and the government's support of the regimes of Myanmar, Iran and the Sudan.

In China's favor, Mitchell did claim that Beijing "buckled to pressure, ending censorship of the Internet for journalists." However that censorship of journalists seemed to be in effect, when Lauer delivered the following mostly positive and probably minder-approved, August 5, report from the Forbidden City:

MATT LAUER: Joshua Cooper Ramo is an NBC China analyst and a former foreign editor at Time magazine. Joshua good morning to you.

JOSHUA COOPER RAMO: Thanks, pleasure to be here.

LAUER: I want to talk about the people here. There's a recent poll that said some very high percentage of the people in China are happy with their lot in life. Something around 80 percent. You compare that to polls in the United States that say only about 25 percent of Americans are, what's the root of their happiness here?

RAMO: You now Matt I think one of the features of incredible economic growth of the physical transformation of this country in the last 20-25 years has been to give people a real sense of optimism. A sense that things are moving in the right direction. A sense of increasing personal liberty, a sense of increasing opportunity. The flip side of that, by the way, is that the government is very, very concerned when you meet with top leaders here. They're relatively optimistic about the future but it's a cautious optimism.

LAUER: Why don't you look at the last 10 years for me or so, the last decade, and give me a progress report. Where, where has the progress been made here?

RAMO: Well probably the, the most dramatic and obvious progress for everybody has just been the tremendous economic growth. You know you're looking at 10 percent a year economic growth, really since the late 1970s when the process of reform and opening began. Probably the most significant change in the last 10 years though has come with the 17 party Congress, which was in 2002, when we had a new set of leaders come in. And their goal, very much, was to change the economic development of China, away from a model that was focuses on the coasts and heavily resource intensive and very insensitive to the environment to one that is spread out more equally around China and it tries to improve the environment.

LAUER: When, when we, over these next couple of weeks hear criticism leveled at the Chinese government there's a question that's being asked back in the states. How will they react? How might they react to a demonstration, whether it be subtle or dramatic?

RAMO: You know one of the things to understand, when you look at the party here, because the party still really does control the government apparatus is this is not the Soviet Union with some late stage, coma patient Communist Party. They are very aware of all the risks and inside the party there's been a lot of debate about how do you react to protests? There's a camp that says the best thing that could happen would be to let it happen and the world would see that China is tolerant.

LAUER: But is that in their DNA?

RAMO: Well there's another camp inside the party that says it's the best possible moment to crack down hard and show the world how tough China is. And it's not something we'll probably even know the answer to unless and if something happens.

LAUER: And the average citizen who may, in principle, agree with the ideology of a protest, might that person, at this particular time say, "No you're not gonna spoil our party, it's inappropriate?"

RAMO: Yeah and I think it's not just about this time. It's about a very strong sense of Chinese nationhood. You have to remember that this is a place that experience unbelievable social chaos from the time of the Opium Wars in the 1850s until the establishment of modern China in 1949. And then decades of chaos after that. It's left them very sensitive to problems of outside interference and unbelievably reactive when they feel they're insulted.

LAUER: Joshua thanks very much. And I want to tell our viewers that Joshua is gonna be sitting next to me and Bob Costas in the broadcast booth on Friday night. He'll be our analyst for the opening ceremony. And your perspective will be invaluable Joshua. So we look forward to that.

RAMO: My pleasure.

Update (Ken Shepherd | 17:33 EDT): This afternoon on his show on the WOR Radio Network, talk show host and friend of NewsBusters Steve Malzberg not only questioned the validity of a poll done in a Communist country where some may fear that the "wrong" answer could bring severe punishment, but also questioned the numbers Lauer provided to represent satified Americans.

Malzberg noted a Gallup Poll conducted December 6-9, 2007, in which 84 percent of Americans said they are satisfied with theway things are going in their personal life, while 14 percent were dissatisfied. He also pointed to a CBS News Poll published on July 1, 2007 that showed 87 percent of those Americans making more than $50,000 were either somewhat or completely satisfied with the way things were going in their lives. Further, 65 percent of those making less than $50,000 said the same thing. Finally a Harris Poll conducted bewteen July 10-16, 2007 found that 94 percent of Americans were satisfied with the life they lead (56 percent very satisfied, 38 percent somewhat satisfied).

Why you ask?

I'll tell you why 80% of Chinese people polled say they are "happy" with their lives; it's because they're terrified the government will find out if they DIDN'T say they were happy! Not to mention they'd be taken to the Chinese prisons never to be seen again.

the tremendous easing

the tremendous easing toward the decadent eeeeevil's of capitalism has certainly cheered them up - works for everybody!

under the communist paradise of twenty years ago they didn't have electricity, running water, non-gray clothes, etc - yeah you could say they're feeling better now, Matt...

rocket scientist are ya?

I'm sure the poll question

I'm sure the poll question went something like this:

 Concerning your life, are you:

A. Happy

B. Ready to disappear from your family never to be heard from again

C. Happy

FT

Great poll question and most probably right on the money.

Matt ought to stay in China to ply his craft. He should be very happy there as well. I forgot to mention, the government will not see the necessity in having another lying-a$$ reporter so they will reassign him to the rice paddies.

Drop to your knees, Matt!  Become the 80 percent!

Not the first country

Let's not forget that Saddam Hussein was re-elected with 100% of the vote, so folks were obviously much happier there before we arrived.  These stories should help with the immigration problem, since millions of immigrants and citizens will now want to leave the US and move to China and Iraq.

of course

Twenty years ago we were given fawning reports of how good life was behind the iron curtain. Now they've simply moved to a new country and started the plan all over again.

Gee, Matt, I dunno...

80% of the people in a communist dictatorship 'report' that they are satisfied with their 'lot in life'.

Thank that might have anything to do with the fear of being arrested and put into a political re-education camp if they complain?

Do the words Tiennamen Square mean anything to you? Anything at all? Hello? Anyone home in there?

Maybe it's the forced sterilizations ...

I'm sure the Chinese are just tickled by China's one child policy; the forced sterilizations and near routine infanticide against female offspring.  Maybe it is the denial of basic rights like worship and expression. I guess it is just a giddy time over there ...

I'm glad our American Networks are right on the story!!

So let's see

NBC (and MSNBC) now has a plethora of morons and dolts.

Matt the Vapid, Brian the Idiot, Mika the Twit, Chrissy the Leg Tingling Spitter, Andrea the Hag......shall I go on?

It's disgusting that NBC feels it must cowtow to the Chinese.  Just for once, I'd like to see them tell it like it is, but of course, I'd not like to see some poor Chinese lose his/her life in the pursuit of truth.  But the sheer smarminess of spreading such vapid lies....well, you see why I name Matt...the Vapid.

You stole my thunder.
I am soooo completely sick and tired of all these people who HATE our wonderful country.  From wanting and willing us to lose a war to telling all Americans of the doom and gloom they are now faced with.  These hacks should be in Joe Arpaio's jail for treason.  I have to believe one day Karma will bite them in the buttocks.
It's sad......

I am soooo completely sick and tired of all these people who HATE our wonderful country.

Same here. And then some.

Hence my new sig (below).

Matt Lauer from Beijing: Chinese Happier than Americans

ozonecharlie

This comment from Matt and NBC seems par for the course when you are talking about a Communist country like China.

Matt doesn't give the poll much thought why a Chinese citizen would say such a thing. Like some posters said, if they didn't say they were happy, they probably be harrassed and finally be put in prison for their negative coments.

I believe the mainstream media said the same thing about Russia, at the beginning of this year.

So Matt, keep the disinformation coming.

Nothing Better 'en Communism.

Nuthin But Communism.

Geez, I could go on forever...until Obama's "new" and "changed" government sends me to re-indoctrination training!

Sorry. It still amazes me that Lauer, et.al., keep touting how great these countries are, without touting the great things here at home. Never mind the human abuses, the severe restrictions on personal freedom (which the MSM touts as paramount), and the censorship of all media that critizes the goverment. Oops, I forgot, that's what Dems want!!!

Sorry again!

Happy with their lot

I've been to China several times, and I can imagine that there are many Chinese who didn't make the survey.  The woman with the broom made of sticks sweeping an endless street.  The men carrying boulders on poles resting on their shoulders to create a foundation for a building.  The barefoot man in mud up to his knees farming his few acres of land with only a hoe.  The woman grinding her own flour on the dirt floor of a bamboo hut.  I can imagine Matt Lauer has never been to these places.

I too have been there...

as a military flight crewman flying diplomats around. The one thing that really stood out, and still sticks in my mind, were the members of police/military/militia, in uniform and in plain clothes that were always hanging around, especially in Tianamen(sp) Square.

We were trained how to spot these people and it was so obvious who they were as we walked around, especially when the same people followed us around and went everywhere we went. I remember a guy who was moved away from us when my co-pilot tried to ask him an innocent question about the Forbidden City and another individual answered his question. Any guess as to what he was?

Of course I'm sure these security forces were told who we were so they can make sure we didn't 'spy' on them since we were US military.

Hell if someone...

had an AK-47 pointed to the back of my head and ask if I'm happy I would say...'yer damn skippy!

"9 out of 10 doctors agree that flag burning is the number one killer of liberals."

Maybe just maybe, its

Maybe just maybe, its because they don’t have jerks like Matt, telling them 24/7 their country sucks..., the economy sucks.., their leader sucks.., you personality are a racist..etc..etc..etc..

Then that AK47 pointed at your head is a bit convincing.

Kind of like when a dictators runs for office and gets 98.9% of the vote, while that 1.1% is never heard from again.

Let's be Happy, Happy

First the Facts. I think 80% or more of the Chinese would be happy...that they survived the years of Mao style communism or are to old to have experienced the utter poverty, mass murders, starvation, absolute fear of the cultural revolution, and all the rest of the glory resulting after the "social chaos" ended with the victory of the communists in 1947. Second Lauer and guest idiot are actually asking if the enlightened leadership of China today will "crack down hard" in public or not. That says the regime is still capable of a Tiananmen Square type reaction. Gee.

As for Lauer, he may be an idiot but he is not stupid. When he compares our "happiness" to Chinese relief he is showing contempt for our free society that has made him a millionaire and has given us the highest standard of living, ever.

I believe happiness is

I believe happiness is mandated by the government...

Really?

Which government?

Could movement, be it ever

Could movement, be it ever so slow, towards a more free and open capitalist society cause optimism in 80% of a citizenry?

Could movement, be it ever so slow, towards a more controled and socialist/communist society cause pessimism in 75% of a citizenry?

Chinese happiness...

...depends on the incentive.  They are told they have a choice; a) you can be happy, or b) we will shoot you, plasticize your body, and ship you off to America to be a display in the "Bodies" show now touring major American museums.  So what's your answer, comrade...hmmm?

This reminds of what they used to tell us in the Navy..."Liberty (shore leave) is hereby cancelled until morale improves!"

America bashing

I guess I look at it a bit differently. Yes, they are under a pretty brutal gubment, but could it be they are happier in their lot because they don't have a never-ending onslaught of continuous bashing of their country by their own press?

Granted, a Chinese reporter would probably not last long if he did as American journalists do, but I wonder how people would feel here if they were not continually told how bad the US is.

I REALLY do not want to see Obama as President, but if it happens, it will be interesting to see how fast the backpeddling will be that things really aren't that bad here after all.

I do not see Matt Lauer moving to China

I guess Matt Lauer is an unhappy man living in the USA.

Yes, under Communism is a

Yes, under Communism is a very happy place to be.  I have an idea, how bout Mr. Lauer head southeast into North Korea and take a poll there?  I bet it will show that those people are the happiest in the world, free to express that opinion openly and honestly.  That poll is likely to be spot-on with a near zero percentage statistical margin.

What a doof!

Hey Matt L... of course

Hey Matt L... of course they are gonna say they are happy, nobody want's to be "dissapeared"! Duh! Matt L. is a moron, typical leftie. Anything anti-American is good press! Disgusting!!!!! That's why I don't watch TV news anymore. Go live in China for a year Matt, then report back ya POS! Rant over...

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

Chinese "happiness"

Happiness is above all things...relative. The proverbial bird in the gilded cage was "happy" until he discovered that a world lay just beyond his reach. I would advise this reporter/advocate of liberal stupidity, to check out a documentary called "China's Stolen Children" and get back to me about "happy". It's about how their insane "one child" policies have led to an epidemic in CHILD SELLING which truly has to be seen to be believed. The other aspect of the film which is equally compelling is that since they can only have "one" child, they abort or sell the female babies. Which leads to couples that can only reproduce girls, hiring thieves to go steal boy children. This is done so that the family "name" will live on.  There is of course,  an extreme shortage of women, so much so that there are roving bands of "women stealers" who will knock a guy out and steal his TEENAGE girlfriend should he be lucky enough to acquire one! She'll then end up chained to a wall somewhere where she can look forward to a life of rape and abuse as some strangers "wife".  This film affected me so much that I was angry and bewildered at Bush for attending the opening ceremonies. Very angry.

You are only as happy as

You are only as happy as you make your mind up to be. Attributed to, but not with 100% certainty, Abraham Lincoln.

These people are great to love their lot in life, and for that I'm happy for them. There are no problems to the fact that 80% of them love where they're at. The problem I see is that the greatest nation on earth, where even the poor are wealthier than the rich of some countries, have gotten so fat and lazy, it's rather pitiful!

Fascism is a religious conception in which man is seen in his imminent relationship with a superior law and with an objective will that transcends the particular individual - Mussolini

Matt

I thinks it's great that Matt has found a happier place and I just know he will fit right in.  The Chinese gov'ment will find him a nice factory job and he'll get to grow his own rice.

I do hope he is happy in his new found home.

Happy Trails...

Watching you all the time

My wife was in Tiananmen Square last month and some Chinese guy started to protest by taking his shirt off.  Five seconds later, there were 5 plainclothes guys hustling him away.  Another guy in my wife's group took a picture of this.  Not three seconds after that, there were five guys around him, "asking" to see the pictures in his camera.  Now that square is several football fields in length.  Any idea how many people you've got to have to not only watch everyone in that square but also pick out anyone who took a picture?  China is about as open as Fort Knox and Matt Lauer's head should be held under the water until he stops wiggling.

Happiness

Most chinese are happy just to be alive outside of a prison Matt's happiness is the same as a child when given an ice cream cone. His world comes alive when expreiencing communism first hand.

Let's see, Lauer is in love

Let's see, Lauer is in love with the idea of a one party state.  That is why he and the liberal media give coverage to Obama over McCain by 2 to 1.  The real race was between Obama and Hillary in his eyes.  McCain is not even a real contender.  He's so second party status.  He might as well be Ralph Nader, so they think in the mid-stream media.

My immediate thought is how accurate is polling in China?  How many people have telephones?  It's a BIG country.  Is the data controlled by the government?
