Campbell Brown: ‘CNN Only One Still Doing Journalism’

**Video Below The Fold**

Campbell Brown, CNN Anchor | NewsBusters.orgOn an interview show called “Give and Take,” hosted by sometime TV pundit Julie Menin, CNN’s Campbell Brown patted herself and her network on the back for being “the only one that is still doing journalism” in cable land.

Menin asked Brown if she felt odd being a “political independent” in this world of cable pundits and lamented that journalism seems to be scant these days. Menin told Brown that at one time, “obviously journalists were independent.” Brown replied by assuming the truth of that “independence” and stated that she and CNN are the only ones “doing journalism” any more.

Menin’s odd assumption, though, that journalists are “political independents” is interesting because of the pervasive left-wing bias that is seen throughout the business. Does Menin think “independent” just means free of conservative ideology but otherwise free to be a liberal?

It is also amusing that Brown imagines that there is no “journalism” going on at either MSNBC or Fox News. Sure both have plenty of opinion shows, and yes they’ve both aimed at an ideologically self-identified audience, but both still do common journalism, whether Brown approves of the final product or not.

Amusingly, Brown talks of an echo chamber without the slightest sense of the one she was sitting in during the interview as Menin’s show doesn’t seem to have a history of inviting many male guests.

Brown’s self-congratulatory feeling that she is the only unbiased journalist left in the world is amusing when juxtaposed with her constant attacks on Sarah Palin as well as the mean-spirited, partisan treatment of McCain representative Tucker Bounds during the late presidential campaign, an incident she mentions in the interview.

Interesting, the host didn’t ask why Brown’s ratings were so dismal. I guess that wasn’t a “serious” enough question for Ms. “No Bias, No Bull.”

Partial Transcript:

Julie Menin: So on the CNN website your bio boldly touts you as the only non-partisan cable news host in the 8PM hour. Now, 10 years ago such a statement would have been a given because obviously journalists were independent. What is your take on the fact that CNN, the pioneer in cable news, is really marketing your political independence to distinguish itself from its competitors?

Campbell Brown: Wow. You’re right, things have changed quite a bit. I just think it’s the world we live in and there is no real metric to measure us by because CNN is the only one that is still doing journalism.

I mean I don’t mean that as a criticism of what the other guys are doing, it’s just we’re comparing apples and oranges. Fox has made a choice to go in one direction, MSNBC has made a choice to go in the other direction, and for me as a journalist, I mean that’s all I know, that’s who I am, that’s what I grew up to be from my very first job through my time at NBC – I was mentored by Tim Russert and Tom Brokaw – I don’t know how to do anything else, so I wouldn’t be comfortable anywhere else and I’m grateful that CNN is committed still to this.

You know, it is frustrating that there isn’t real competition in journalism, but look, I get it, I recognize the world we live in. Ratings are really important. You are in all likelihood gonna get a bigger rating when you do opinion rather than straight news because you have a built in audience. I mean there’re a lot of people who wanna be in an echo chamber and want their views validated. So you see that with Fox and MSNBC they have an automatic punching bag, you know, if you will. They have a loyal audience who wants to hear that perspective.

Despite this CNN continues to lose viewers. Film at 11.

Both of her viewers agree,

Both of her viewers agree, and not just because they're her parents.

CNN

Does Campbell Brown actually believe that CNN has journalists?  Nobody else does, either!

Her one example

Her one example of being true to her craft, to being unbaised, to being above the talking points and 'not letting go' of a question unanswered was of her interview with Mccain's campaign spokesman.

I guess all the answers she got from Barry were spot on and required no further probing or investigation.

Unbiased my A$$. Tell your story to your incredibly shrinking audience lady.

Talk about comparing apples and oranges!

OK, I've never watched Brown's show, so I can't say what she does.  But I will assume, for the sake of argument, that she does a news show. So maybe the reason that statement is true is because hers is the only "news" show.

She is up against Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann. They are commentators!  Pundits! The don't tout themselves as "news" hosts. (Well Olbermann says what he does is "really journalism" but that doesn't make it so.)

Talk about comparing apples and oranges!

excellent point!

fnc has, in my opinion, the most unbiased evening news of any cable or over-the-air network.  it's fundamentally balanced due to its format.  present the news (now they've got a brit hume opinion piece mixed in there too, but "opinion" is on the wallpaper behind him the whole time hume is speaking), then have a panel with liberal and conservative representation to discuss the two main stories of the day.  their only weak point is that the panel is overpopulated by conservatives (last night it was 3-0).

she should compare her show to this show instead.

swing hard in case you hit it.

puredmashie - I couldn't agree with you more. Special Report

with Bret Baier on Fox News is the most unbiased and balanced news program on television.

It's ironic that the FoxNews programs hosted by Shepard Smith that are supposed to be their "straight news" programs are the ones that lean to the left. Shepard Smith, who I can't stomach, is the liberal Foxnews host who said We are America. We do not f***ing torture and We're Having Trouble With Many People' Denying Global Warming.

Moreover, FoxNews commentary programs, including Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Greta Van Susteren, have guests with opposite viewpoints.

Kudos to FoxNews!

The "Real" Story

Campbell Brown: Wow. You’re right, things have changed quite a bit. I

measure us by because CNN is the only one that is still doing
journalism.

Brown then smiled to her imaginary and long-time, live-in companion, Puff the Magic Dragon, and gave him a delusional smile and a little wave.

As funny as her statement

As funny as her statement is, she is beginning to beat /compete with Olbermann for viewers.

Bias'd Bull

Olbermann is just a lousy auctioneer selling hate Bush memorabilia to a small group of narrow minded buyers.

Brown is nice to look at, her main and only real TV asset, but unbiased she is not. Virtually no "newsperson" is unbiased. They rarely enter the business. Especially today when the large majority want to be seen as important and making a difference. When in fact most have no idea of how the world actually works.

The best of them today can, to a degree, hide their true bias, hard though it may be.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said, give the American people all the facts and they will never make a wrong decision.

All you need to know about "Independents"

"Independent" is what lefties call themselves when they're wearing their cammies.

(IOW, it's what they call themselves when they're trying to blend into the landscape.)

danebramage,

A decade ago I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly but in the last decade the ranks of the Independents have been added to by people tired of the lack of support and lack of direction presented by the Republican Party. Plus it appears to me that many see the Third Party choices as having some element of extremism to them. The Republicans as a whole have done nothing to shore up support and they will get no help from the media so people are becoming Independents.

I wonder how many Republicans switched parties during Rush's stunt with Clinton and refused to return to the party as McCain continued to throw them under the bus and the Republican Party continued to distance itself from the 'fringe right'.

A person may be won over with logic and reason but the masses must be bought with spectacle and platitudes. - 2008 Elections

Agreed.  I'd consider

Agreed.  I'd consider myself libertarian for the most part, except when it comes to foreign policy.  I really do believe that aside from the entitlement class, most people would like the government to protect them, but otherwise lay off.  If Republicans could voice their support for equal treatment of all people (fairtax and such) they would gain support.  There's a huge problem I have found.  Republicans have fallen into leftist thinking in believing that it is the government's responsibility to provide equal results, whereas freedom only provides equal opportunity.

I registered as Independent because neither party voices my beliefs.  I may vote Republican, but it has almost always been a lesser of two evils decision.

Generalize much?

"'Independent' is what lefties call themselves when they're wearing their cammies."

I'm a Conservative, but I am a registered member of the Independence Party of Minnesota.  This is because I consider myself as an Independent. Does this mean I'm a leftist too?  Or are you just generalizing too much?

CNN, still doing selective journalism

"CNN is the only one that is still doing journalism"

You mean selective journalism, don't you?  You know, like how CNN selectively refused to report about the abuses that were occurring under Saddam Husein because they were afraid they'd lose their Baghdad office.  Is this the type of "journalism" you're "still" doing?

CNN Only One Still Doing Journalism

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

I Am Curious (about) Yellow Journalism

What exactly does one have to study and what qualifications does one need to become a "journalist"?  Lemee guess:

1.  Present a copy of the high school yearbook and/or newspaper you worked on.

2.  Be willing to be sent to exotic locations and possibly be shot at.

3.  Learn how to put that white card with "PRESS" in big black letters into the hat band of your Fedora.

4.  Know all the intimate details of the workings of the Daily Planet.

5.  Take your knocks and don't be offended when the old hands call you "Scoop" or a "cub reporter" when they send you out to buy coffee and donuts for them.

6.  Take typing lessons on a 1920 Underwood typewriter so it can sit behind you on the set should you get a job on 60 Minutes some day.

And I guess other than that just be generally obnoxious and nosey and know how to (sort of) read and write.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).
