The Politico reported on November 22 that Time Magazine's Mark Halperin scolded the media for it's sycophantic treatment of Barack Obama during this election cycle calling the favorable treatment "the most disgusting failure" of the press he's seen for years. "It was extreme bias, extreme pro-Obama coverage," Halperin said at a Politico/USC conference held on Friday.
It's all pretty amusing, though, to see Mark Helprin complain that his fellow journalists didn't do a good job reporting on Obama's record because back in March, NewsBusters reported on how Halperin himself was claiming that Obama represented a "centrist" politician despite the fact that Obama has the most liberal voting record in the Senate! What happened to being tough on The One then?
Halperin cited two specific instances of pro-Obama media bias seen in The New York Times.
"The example that I use, at the end of the campaign, was the two profiles that The New York Times ran of the potential first ladies," Halperin said. "The story about Cindy McCain was vicious. It looked for every negative thing they could find about her and it case her in an extraordinarily negative light. It didn't talk about her work, for instance, as a mother for her children, and they cherry-picked every negative thing that's ever been written about her."
The story about Michelle Obama, by contrast, was "like a front-page endorsement of what a great person Michelle Obama is," according to Halperin.
A few of the other panelists disputed Halperin's claims, but Politico reports that his media bias point "met with little resistance" for the most part.
OK, so the media realizes it went ga ga for Obama and won't fight too hard when someone like Halperin mentions the patently obvious fact at a conference. But, here is the question: is the media just shrugging its shoulders at the fact? Or is it shamed and determined to correct its utter failure to report the truth in favor of promulgating a gauzy Obama mythos?
I would have to say the former because we are still getting absurd Obama's-like-Lincoln or FDR or JFK stories all over the place. We are still getting daily reports on what that wonderful Michelle is wearing today. We are still seeing the media comment lovingly on the private schools that Obama's kids are going to as it ignores the hypocrisy that as a candidate Obama claimed we needed to shore up our failing public schools.
Despite the fact that Halperin is disappointed with the Obama tanked media, and despite the fact that they all seem to accept that Halperin has a valid point, the realization that they failed to follow the basic precepts of journalism doesn't seem to have deterred them one bit from continuing down that road.
Throw on top of the Obama sycophancy the continued bald-faced attacks against Governor Sarah Palin and we can see that the media isn't just incidentally in the tank for Obama, but going out of its way to push Obama's agenda as opposed to merely reporting the news.
In essence, to the charge of pro-Obama bias, the media is shrugging its collective shoulders and saying, "Yeah, well so what?" And we should all realize that the media has no intentions at all to mend its ways.

TYPICAL
November 23, 2008 - 06:17 ET by TruestarI see a lot of backing off on what the chosen ONE will or can actually do, in the MSM. This is quite typical. It's CYA time for the likes of Helper-in. His sudden cognizence that Obama isn't what he's cracked up to be is, incredibly, about two years late. It's a mystery to me how a guy like this can be called a legitimate journalist...at Time Rag no less. But I could also say the same for any number of MSM "journalists" and commentators. So it's not really a mystery....it's just liberal "journalists" making excuses for their sorry a**es. I used to think politicians were the bane of society, but I can't think of anyone more loathsome than an MSM "journalist" nowadays, who kisses the behind of a typical liberal politician in the face of his own purportedly professional standards.
This is a perfect example of what will be on-going for the next four years. But I'm sure NBusters will have a blast reporting all of it, and I, for one, will savor every delectable piece of MSM crow. Thanks much, Warner.

November 23, 2008 - 07:14 ET by motherbeltHis sudden cognizence that Obama isn't what he's cracked up to be
I don't know that it's so much that, or if they think that now, by admitting they screwed up then, they can get some credibility back.
Like the husband who admits he cheated, and because of that, expects his wife to start trusting him again.
And Warner, I agree with you...they are just figurative shrugging their shoulders...yeah we were biased. No contrition. And things won't change anytime soon.
Hellemann's comment was a howler:
"The biggest bias in the press is towards effectiveness," said
Heilemann, who is authoring a book on the 2008 race along with
Halperin.
"We love things that are smart."
So that's it. Bias toward Obama because he was "smart."
And no doubt they were just being "accurate" about how amazing and wonderful he is.
I can also believe the part about being impressed when negative tactics work. Look at what they did in the Clinton years. For a long time the stories were about marvelling over the skill of the spin!
I can't wait until their idol starts stonewalling the press corps; then we'll see if their adoration lasts.
Time and Obama
November 23, 2008 - 06:34 ET by auldsailor362My wife gave me a birthday subscription to Time thinking, since I was somewhat a "news junkie" I'd like it. I read the first issue and cancelled it. Halperin and Klein and Time in general are a waste of trees. Unfortunately I've yet to find a good 'non biased' magazine or newspaper, which is why I hit the Web. At least here its' easy to sort the baloney from the fact, and this site is probably one of the best for doing that.

Strange.....I saw Mark Halperin on Morning Joe at least 2-3 times per week before the election, and he never hinted at any of this, and now he has this sudden epiphany??
You know good and well that he saw all this before the election and didn't mention it so his guy would get elected.. He's humiliating himself (as far as I'm concerned) to bring this up now. What a poor excuse for a journalist. He just has a guilty conscience.
To little to late...

November 23, 2008 - 08:50 ET by Michael30It actually isn't very hard to imagine. They already have both the Executive and Legislative branches of government behind them at the moment (well, the very near future nonetheless.)
Now they have to appear to be objective to keep selling those subscriptions. It is now completely alright to admit that some corners were cut in vetting this man to be our current president because there is no negative aspect to such an opinion.
Ethically, it causes a problem with regards to the timing of it all, but basically, now they have to rush back to being objective.
They already have what they wanted all along, now they have to convince the reading public that they were just observers like the rest of us.
Mike
oh well
November 23, 2008 - 09:14 ET by candanceSince I don't recall Halperin critizing them the week that article came out, I'll take this as disingenuous. How convenient that now that the damage is done they start admitting to it.

TIME Magazine
November 23, 2008 - 09:25 ET by sbourgWarner: Thank you for insight and exposee of Halperin's repudiation of his brain's conduct. I'll add one comment. TIME and so many others, blasted "W" throughout 2006 to help get Dems elected in Nov06 and it worked. Then they concentrated on White House '08. What we've seen is a mind-numbing focus on their part.......in blatant contradiction to their financial self-interest. When Pelosi, Reid and those hyper-Leftists took over, the economy got NO relief, no tax reductions, no help to provide better tax incentives or more drilling or anything to help. Many of us believe that two years of Dem control, and now with Obama they'll have even more for 2 more years, means economic catastrophe for the country. Therefore, ad revenues for rags like NYT and TIME are plummeting, so they have helped dig their own grave. To me, this shows that idiots like Halperin and Sulzberger couldn't see past the ends of their noses. Good riddance to them, but woe for our country with the Three Stooges in charge now.
TIME to go!

Exploiting this for positive change.
November 23, 2008 - 10:05 ET by John EOne effective suggestion has emerged from Howell over at WaPo. That involves a structural change accomplished via a diversity program for hiring conservative journalists. That's an inch we should noisily expand into a mile.

November 23, 2008 - 10:39 ET by NoJellyHow convenient to make these statements AFTER colluding to elect what may turn out to be the most unqualified President in the nation's history...But they've done this before--The media darlinged Clinton into office, then commenced to turn on him, though not in so much intensity or so quickly as is the case here.
They've dug a pretty good hole for themselves this time around, as any criticism of THIS administration has already been determined (by the MSMs themselves!) as, at the very least, racist...
I've come to the realization that, besides the obvious man-crush of certain questionably oriented "journalists", that the MSM doesn't care who the man is, they campaign for the "D" and villify the "R" at every opportunity, reflecting only afterwards as to what they've done...The Brokaw commentary after the election being a watershed moment; "We don't really know ANYTHING about this man..."
they made their own bed...
November 23, 2008 - 10:46 ET by jackie3and now they have to "lie" in it. The media did it to themselves. No one forced them to relentlessly go after Bush for 4 years and then elevate a socialist who couldn't pass a back ground check to "messiah" and essentially catapult him into power.
The media doesn't have buyers remorse. It's a token attempt to attract conservatives and republicans into buying their product. The remorse will come when either major media goes belly up or Obama effectively turns them into a government run press.
How hypocritical the press is. They make comments about Russia and China's lack of "free press" but don't look at their own agenda. Their agenda was not sales. It stopped being sales when the media consciously started thinking about "who should be" president. It stopped being a free enterprise at that moment: The moment the main stream media decided to use their influence and power to help get a socialist with a questionable past elected.
Now, there are few things that can be done to correct this situation. Hopefully, it will be proven that Obama was born in Kenya and not HI. The place to look for that proof would be Kenya.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

It's so matter-of-fact that it almost goes without saying. It's a given. It's similar to saying ice is cold, water is wet and liberals are fools.
Politico.com reports that Time Magazine's Mark Haperin believes "Media bias was more intense in the 2008 election than in any other national campaign in recent history."
Now Halperin, of course, is a liberal journalist who works for a liberal rag (Time Magazine) that is in the tank for Obama. So what wise and thoughtful advice does a liberal journalist give to the rest of us? "I think it's incumbent upon people in our business to make sure that we're being fair," he said.
I say to Mr. Halperin - Practice what you preach!

When all the reporters loose all the jobs, and the bias MSM's are financially ruined, no problem for them. They can all go to work in the 2009 version of Obama's "CCC camps", as he puts everyone to work building the infrastructre of the USA. Probably a 5 year plan!

November 23, 2008 - 13:34 ET by BW222I have never witnessed anything like MSM's 2008 performance. I expect them to slant the news to favor liberals and put conseratives in a bad light, but this year, there wasn't even any pretense.
I can just imagine what would happen if Barack Obama killed someone in a fit of rage. MSM would be gathering to discuss how they could keep it from the public for the next eight years.
After 2008 election coverage, the whores in the media make the whores that work Times Square look like ethical ladies.
