Pro-Tibet Demonstrators Don't Know Much About History

Photo of Warner Todd Huston.

Let's give them an "A" for feeling, but an "F" for history. Photographer Rowan Benum captured an amusing sign at a Pro-Tibet rally in California not long ago and it says loads about our fetid educational system in the US these days. History isn't one of the better understood subjects, but feelings are there in spades.

Of course, we understand the sentiment. The Nazis now serve as the single worst example of human evil. Say someone is a Nazi and you can't get a worse epithet. And the left in the US just loves to throw that name around at whom ever they don't like. Bush is a "Nazi," Bill O'Reilly is a "Nazi," conservatives are "Nazis," etc., etc.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

So, what's more natural than calling the Chinese "Nazis"? After all, the Chinese may be responsible for killing even more people than Hitler ever dreamed of killing and they are still around to rack up an ever higher murder rate. Certainly the Russians killed more than Hitler did -- and this always makes me wonder why the word "communist" is not considered as bad a name to call someone as "Nazi," but I digress.

Now, the sentiment that the Chinese are bad and we should not be allowing them to host the Olympics while pretending China is an upstanding member of the international community is one that anyone interested in liberty and freedom should consider salient.

With that sentiment I also agree.

Unfortunately, someone didn't pay attention to their history teacher in California because, as we all know, the Nazis DID host the Olympics. It was 1936. And many people of the international community of 1936 wanted the Nazis to have the Olympics for the same reason that people today think we should allow the Chinese to have them.

It will “help” them become better members of the international community, or so goes the theory. And we can see how hosting the Olympics helped the Nazis reform themselves to join the international community in 1936, right?

Sadly, our pro-Tibet protesters need a history lesson. So does anyone who thinks it a good idea to let China host the Olympics.

By the way, the little tags at the top of the sign are Tibetan prayer cards or flags. Just in case you wondered.

The sign is clearly funny enough that it deserved top NB billing. Hell, I love this sign -- it's almost captionfest worthy, so I'll start: "Let me guess -- you really liked history in public school?" :)

When I was an eight-grader in 1964 you had to pass a Constitution test to graduate. You had to know all the amendments, cabinet officers, and understand about checks and balances.

Not bragging but there were 150 possible points and I scored 149. The one I got wrong was Orville Freeman as Sec. of Agriculture.

I doubt if any college graduates would score more than 50 (probably being generous here) on the same test today. Really pathetic and scary.

may i pose a word of caution regarding photoshoping

while i would absolutely believe that it is completely in the realm of possibility considering the quality of the government indoctrination centers that some people refer to as schools(thank neal boortz), could that picture have been a photoshop spoof planted on purpose to scam the net and news like many other agencies have picked up and ran with fake stories recently. now i'm sure that in this day and age you could easily poll a thousand government educated highschoolers randomly across the country and i'd be willing to place a large amount of my personal assests on the chance that the majority polled are ignorant to the fact that the nazis did host the olympics games(they don't even have to identify it was 1936), but i would go on to double down that out of those 1000 lil government zombies that more of them would know that jesse owens did participate in the olympics, that's something they learned during black history month, but they still could not tell you it was in nazi germany. i'd bet the only person they would be taught by their "teachers" that is a nazi would be dick cheney or rush limbaugh.

could that sign just be a photoshop prank, just like the sign generators that you can find on the net that are on fast food resturaunts and churches, and like one i actually did for a death to american muslim street protestor where i captioned on his sign "will suicide bomb for food".

lunaticcringeradio

protestors, the voice of the brainwashed

at this point who is ever swayed by protestors gathered in a rally. i mean really, isn't the real reason that protestors are out and about is simply because they were conned, pressured, and coerced to step in line with their "professors" agenda without question for a good grade and to demostrate their loyalty to him/her/it with hyped up enthusiasim by participating in one of these rallies. the other half of them are just horney guys that have found that it's easier to get laid if they act all sensative and caring for a cause that the chick they have their eye on is into, even though she might not shave her legs.

I think it's great that China is holding the Olympics

Because it draws attention to many important things. I don't think the Olympics should be boycotted because the athletes work too hard for their rare chance but I do think the protests are great for a few reasons.

1. They illustrate how little their protests over the years have done to help the Tibetan People. Despite 60 years of nonviolent opposition, the Dalai Lama and the Liberals have done absolutely nothing to better the life of Tibetans.

2. The only reason people finally got motivated for some larger protests was because the Tibetans were finally fighting back for once. That is the only reason it as had more attention than normal.

3. Maybe one or two liberals might start to question and wonder why they can't draw crowds as large as they do for the Iraq protests. Could it be because the communist funding is missing?

4. If Iran or Al queda take over Iraq I don't think they will even want to hold the Olympics. Any protests in their countries will not be allowed and everyone else will just assume things are A okay. If China weren't holding the Olympics, would anyone be thinking of the Tibetan people right now?

The success and comfort of

The success and comfort of the "athletes" is meaningless. I couldn't care less how long and hard they worked. The greater principle is far more important.

No American should be traveling to China for these games.

I disagree Warner. It's not their fault or their cross to bear

Spectators other than family members, that's different but I would never judge an Olympian for performing there. I wouldn't judge them for sitting it out either. It's their choice and one that I certainly can't judge them on since I own things made in China.

The fact that I own some piece of junk from China is certainly more wrong than an athlete who has worked for a chance that doesn't come around very often. I'm really surprised that you feel this way Warner. Shocked actually.

Dee

to be in context, Warner thinks that sports in general is way way over-emphasized in todays society.  He may believe that the money spent on any olympics is a waste of resource.

i am the quixotic botg and i approved this message”

Hi Bruce

I can understand that point of view. I think there is over emphasis also and it leads to some bad things like steroid use, but overall I still think sports are healthy and valuable to society.

I don't understand thinking that athletes should boycott though. I don't even think boycotting Chinese products is smart because it only hurts poor people in China and America and everywhere else. Expecting someone to boycott a product is much more reasonable then expecting them to give up everything they've worked for when their boycott won't even stop the event.
If people want to boycott something that's fine but judging others who would have to give up much much more is inappropriate in my eyes. China is better than the other communist countries out there and more open to making reforms so supporting them isn't even supporting Communism. Their human rights violations should have prevented them from getting the Award, but they got it and it's not the athletes fault.
The U.S. government should put more restrictions on China but expecting poor people not to buy cheap products or athletes to not participate in something they have worked their whole lives for isn't reasonable.

yes Dee

i agree with you.  : )

i am the quixotic botg and i approved this message”

You are the best Bruce

I would think most conservatives would agree that's why I'm so surprised that WTH doesn't.

well Dee

sports is one of Warners points where he differs from the mainstream here.  We all have our points of variance.

i am the quixotic botg and i approved this message”

I don't at all...

I don't hold to the internationalist view that China will come along and become nice folks because we buy stuff from them. I have no expectation that capitalist engagement will alter them in but the tiniest of ways.

I am not one of those conservatives that feels that China somehow MUST become a more open society because of their financial connection with the rest of the world.

Further, there is no proof that our engagement thus far has done ANYTHING to foster change in that society. In fact, China has had more crack downs, more executions, more oppression since its capitalist engagement with the west. If anything our engagement has made things more oppressive there.

And we can point to every single past communist system and see clearly that engagement, placation, and the good hopes of westerners did NOTHING whatever to temper any of them. Not with the Soviets, not Pol Pot, and not China.

It is foolish to imagine otherwise. We trade with China because it is good for us. Any wishful thinking that it is good for the Chinese people or will foster any hope for their freedom is foolish, just plain foolish. Further, the only people who think that it could be good are only thinking that way so that they can assuage their own guilt of adding to the oppression of the Chinese people.

The main problem with the thought that financial commitment makes for permanent allies is that states do not merely follow pure logic like that. War, ambition, and politics is NOT a purely logical thing in the human animal. China WILL start a war with the United States and it will do so despite the financial ties. They simply don't care a whit about the money. As soon as they feel they are powerful enough they will attack. It has been their stated goal and all the WalMart toys in the world will not deter them.

Now, as to sports... I hate the so-called professional sports and I believe all sports should be removed from schools at every level. It is a waste of money and teaches nothing worth while.

However, I have no problem with amateur sports nor community sports. If people want to exercise their bodies with sports, what could be wrong with that? If they want social exercises for their children in kids' leagues, great.

But it is a useless waste of money in schools.

So nothing made from China in the Huston Home?

I find that hard to believe. But if that is what you believe and you hold to it then that is admirable. I suppose you think the rice fields are a better working environment for them, even with less pay? If you could only live in one place or the other, would you pick North Korea or China? Their governments are similar in culture and human rights violations; the only major difference is economics.

I disagree and don’t think the conservative view is foolish. Economic freedom leads to more personal freedoms. It’s been seen many times in history. It’s happened in Russia and the Baltic states, Middle Eastern countries like India, European Countries like Germany and Poland, South American countries like Chili and Argentina and Middle eastern countries Turkey and Eastern Countries like India.

I don’t know how you can say China has gotten worse when many of their people have been lifted out of poverty. Unlike North Korea or Cuba, we hear about people being persecuted in China. That, in and of itself is an improvement. Not hearing about it is much worse. India and China are a lot less worry to us than Putin’s Russia, Chavez’s Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, and of course Iran, Syria and even Africa . India and China are making steps that will raise the standard of living in their countries. They have no need to attack us for our resources when they can provide for their people with their own, and they aren’t going to attack us when we have nuclear weapons.

There is no doubt that things going on in China are appalling, but it’s not the athletes’ fault. They aren’t going to change any of China’s policies. Only the international governments can. I think the international community should place more restrictions on them but the fact is that people are moving from hard labor in rice fields to industrial and business jobs and that things are better for many in China.

Dont hold your breath Dee

It takes warner a while to answer tough questions, if he bothers to answer at all.

I agree with you btw. The Olympic commitee has already picked China as the host in 2008, it is too late to do anything now. I say make the best out of it.
