Pro-Tibet Demonstrators Don't Know Much About History

  • Bookmark and Share

Let's give them an "A" for feeling, but an "F" for history. Photographer Rowan Benum captured an amusing sign at a Pro-Tibet rally in California not long ago and it says loads about our fetid educational system in the US these days. History isn't one of the better understood subjects, but feelings are there in spades.

Of course, we understand the sentiment. The Nazis now serve as the single worst example of human evil. Say someone is a Nazi and you can't get a worse epithet. And the left in the US just loves to throw that name around at whom ever they don't like. Bush is a "Nazi," Bill O'Reilly is a "Nazi," conservatives are "Nazis," etc., etc.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

So, what's more natural than calling the Chinese "Nazis"? After all, the Chinese may be responsible for killing even more people than Hitler ever dreamed of killing and they are still around to rack up an ever higher murder rate. Certainly the Russians killed more than Hitler did -- and this always makes me wonder why the word "communist" is not considered as bad a name to call someone as "Nazi," but I digress.

Now, the sentiment that the Chinese are bad and we should not be allowing them to host the Olympics while pretending China is an upstanding member of the international community is one that anyone interested in liberty and freedom should consider salient.

With that sentiment I also agree.

Unfortunately, someone didn't pay attention to their history teacher in California because, as we all know, the Nazis DID host the Olympics. It was 1936. And many people of the international community of 1936 wanted the Nazis to have the Olympics for the same reason that people today think we should allow the Chinese to have them.

It will “help” them become better members of the international community, or so goes the theory. And we can see how hosting the Olympics helped the Nazis reform themselves to join the international community in 1936, right?

Sadly, our pro-Tibet protesters need a history lesson. So does anyone who thinks it a good idea to let China host the Olympics.

By the way, the little tags at the top of the sign are Tibetan prayer cards or flags. Just in case you wondered.

The sign is clearly funny enough that it deserved top NB billing. Hell, I love this sign -- it's almost captionfest worthy, so I'll start: "Let me guess -- you really liked history in public school?" :)

When I was an eight-grader in 1964 you had to pass a Constitution test to graduate. You had to know all the amendments, cabinet officers, and understand about checks and balances.

Not bragging but there were 150 possible points and I scored 149. The one I got wrong was Orville Freeman as Sec. of Agriculture.

I doubt if any college graduates would score more than 50 (probably being generous here) on the same test today. Really pathetic and scary.

may i pose a word of caution regarding photoshoping

while i would absolutely believe that it is completely in the realm of possibility considering the quality of the government indoctrination centers that some people refer to as schools(thank neal boortz), could that picture have been a photoshop spoof planted on purpose to scam the net and news like many other agencies have picked up and ran with fake stories recently. now i'm sure that in this day and age you could easily poll a thousand government educated highschoolers randomly across the country and i'd be willing to place a large amount of my personal assests on the chance that the majority polled are ignorant to the fact that the nazis did host the olympics games(they don't even have to identify it was 1936), but i would go on to double down that out of those 1000 lil government zombies that more of them would know that jesse owens did participate in the olympics, that's something they learned during black history month, but they still could not tell you it was in nazi germany. i'd bet the only person they would be taught by their "teachers" that is a nazi would be dick cheney or rush limbaugh.

could that sign just be a photoshop prank, just like the sign generators that you can find on the net that are on fast food resturaunts and churches, and like one i actually did for a death to american muslim street protestor where i captioned on his sign "will suicide bomb for food".

lunaticcringeradio

protestors, the voice of the brainwashed

at this point who is ever swayed by protestors gathered in a rally. i mean really, isn't the real reason that protestors are out and about is simply because they were conned, pressured, and coerced to step in line with their "professors" agenda without question for a good grade and to demostrate their loyalty to him/her/it with hyped up enthusiasim by participating in one of these rallies. the other half of them are just horney guys that have found that it's easier to get laid if they act all sensative and caring for a cause that the chick they have their eye on is into, even though she might not shave her legs.

I think it's great that China is holding the Olympics

Because it draws attention to many important things. I don't think the Olympics should be boycotted because the athletes work too hard for their rare chance but I do think the protests are great for a few reasons.

1. They illustrate how little their protests over the years have done to help the Tibetan People. Despite 60 years of nonviolent opposition, the Dalai Lama and the Liberals have done absolutely nothing to better the life of Tibetans.

2. The only reason people finally got motivated for some larger protests was because the Tibetans were finally fighting back for once. That is the only reason it as had more attention than normal.

3. Maybe one or two liberals might start to question and wonder why they can't draw crowds as large as they do for the Iraq protests. Could it be because the communist funding is missing?

4. If Iran or Al queda take over Iraq I don't think they will even want to hold the Olympics. Any protests in their countries will not be allowed and everyone else will just assume things are A okay. If China weren't holding the Olympics, would anyone be thinking of the Tibetan people right now?

The success and comfort of

The success and comfort of the "athletes" is meaningless. I couldn't care less how long and hard they worked. The greater principle is far more important.

No American should be traveling to China for these games.

I disagree Warner. It's not their fault or their cross to bear

Spectators other than family members, that's different but I would never judge an Olympian for performing there. I wouldn't judge them for sitting it out either. It's their choice and one that I certainly can't judge them on since I own things made in China.

The fact that I own some piece of junk from China is certainly more wrong than an athlete who has worked for a chance that doesn't come around very often. I'm really surprised that you feel this way Warner. Shocked actually.

Dee

to be in context, Warner thinks that sports in general is way way over-emphasized in todays society.  He may believe that the money spent on any olympics is a waste of resource.

i am the quixotic botg and i approved this message”

Hi Bruce

I can understand that point of view. I think there is over emphasis also and it leads to some bad things like steroid use, but overall I still think sports are healthy and valuable to society.

I don't understand thinking that athletes should boycott though. I don't even think boycotting Chinese products is smart because it only hurts poor people in China and America and everywhere else. Expecting someone to boycott a product is much more reasonable then expecting them to give up everything they've worked for when their boycott won't even stop the event.
If people want to boycott something that's fine but judging others who would have to give up much much more is inappropriate in my eyes. China is better than the other communist countries out there and more open to making reforms so supporting them isn't even supporting Communism. Their human rights violations should have prevented them from getting the Award, but they got it and it's not the athletes fault.
The U.S. government should put more restrictions on China but expecting poor people not to buy cheap products or athletes to not participate in something they have worked their whole lives for isn't reasonable.

yes Dee

i agree with you.  : )

i am the quixotic botg and i approved this message”

You are the best Bruce

I would think most conservatives would agree that's why I'm so surprised that WTH doesn't.

well Dee

sports is one of Warners points where he differs from the mainstream here.  We all have our points of variance.

i am the quixotic botg and i approved this message”

I don't at all...

I don't hold to the internationalist view that China will come along and become nice folks because we buy stuff from them. I have no expectation that capitalist engagement will alter them in but the tiniest of ways.

I am not one of those conservatives that feels that China somehow MUST become a more open society because of their financial connection with the rest of the world.

Further, there is no proof that our engagement thus far has done ANYTHING to foster change in that society. In fact, China has had more crack downs, more executions, more oppression since its capitalist engagement with the west. If anything our engagement has made things more oppressive there.

And we can point to every single past communist system and see clearly that engagement, placation, and the good hopes of westerners did NOTHING whatever to temper any of them. Not with the Soviets, not Pol Pot, and not China.

It is foolish to imagine otherwise. We trade with China because it is good for us. Any wishful thinking that it is good for the Chinese people or will foster any hope for their freedom is foolish, just plain foolish. Further, the only people who think that it could be good are only thinking that way so that they can assuage their own guilt of adding to the oppression of the Chinese people.

The main problem with the thought that financial commitment makes for permanent allies is that states do not merely follow pure logic like that. War, ambition, and politics is NOT a purely logical thing in the human animal. China WILL start a war with the United States and it will do so despite the financial ties. They simply don't care a whit about the money. As soon as they feel they are powerful enough they will attack. It has been their stated goal and all the WalMart toys in the world will not deter them.

Now, as to sports... I hate the so-called professional sports and I believe all sports should be removed from schools at every level. It is a waste of money and teaches nothing worth while.

However, I have no problem with amateur sports nor community sports. If people want to exercise their bodies with sports, what could be wrong with that? If they want social exercises for their children in kids' leagues, great.

But it is a useless waste of money in schools.

So nothing made from China in the Huston Home?

I find that hard to believe. But if that is what you believe and you hold to it then that is admirable. I suppose you think the rice fields are a better working environment for them, even with less pay? If you could only live in one place or the other, would you pick North Korea or China? Their governments are similar in culture and human rights violations; the only major difference is economics.

I disagree and don’t think the conservative view is foolish. Economic freedom leads to more personal freedoms. It’s been seen many times in history. It’s happened in Russia and the Baltic states, Middle Eastern countries like India, European Countries like Germany and Poland, South American countries like Chili and Argentina and Middle eastern countries Turkey and Eastern Countries like India.

I don’t know how you can say China has gotten worse when many of their people have been lifted out of poverty. Unlike North Korea or Cuba, we hear about people being persecuted in China. That, in and of itself is an improvement. Not hearing about it is much worse. India and China are a lot less worry to us than Putin’s Russia, Chavez’s Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, and of course Iran, Syria and even Africa . India and China are making steps that will raise the standard of living in their countries. They have no need to attack us for our resources when they can provide for their people with their own, and they aren’t going to attack us when we have nuclear weapons.

There is no doubt that things going on in China are appalling, but it’s not the athletes’ fault. They aren’t going to change any of China’s policies. Only the international governments can. I think the international community should place more restrictions on them but the fact is that people are moving from hard labor in rice fields to industrial and business jobs and that things are better for many in China.

Dont hold your breath Dee

It takes warner a while to answer tough questions, if he bothers to answer at all.

I agree with you btw. The Olympic commitee has already picked China as the host in 2008, it is too late to do anything now. I say make the best out of it.

Have a temper?

I thought I was the only one here who got a tad, um tempermental from time to time!

It's all good....

But if we were all nice all the time it would be too boring.

But if we were all nice all the time it would be too boring. We'd have to be people who didn't care that much about stuff. I think most people here care a lot about people (lib and con) and that's why we get upset. We come here rather than stare at meaningless T.V. programs because we don't like feeling so helpless about some of the problems in the world.

Exactly, Dee

We are like a big, somewhat unruly family here.

It's alot of fun...which is why we are here.

Plus, TV is a bore!

It is - but I do watch Desperate Housewives

so I got to go. The worlds problems can wait this time!

I only watch DH and Lost those are my two T.V. addictions

Thanks for the info Jer

I didn't understand that Shawn meant he really came back under the handle Gunslinger. I thought Shawn was just calling him gunslinger.

Leon jumps around to a lot of threads so maybe he was banned for something said in a different one. It could also just be the cumulative effect because I think that was the day he was really obnoxious with me. >

Yeah - Leon I don't know what was up with him

Jer

I think you missed...

Dee,

I think you missed the part where I said that trade with China is good for us?

Trade should not be a tool of coercive foreign policy. It is a tool of economics. Cheap goods are good for the world's economy. It has nothing to do with social policy as to be enforced on other nations. If it is good for us, then I see no reason not pursue it. The Founders wanted trade with everyone as a matter of course and didn't want us to use trade measures as tools of force.

I have no problem buying goods that were manufactured in China. However, I have a HUGE problem acting as if China is a nation on par with western democracies, and do not feel we should give them the benefit of being considered a legitimate government.

Were I in government we would not have relations with such foreign governments except to discuss actual conflict. There would not be state visits or cordial relations. They would be kept at arm's length.

In China's instance, for example, I think we should be actively enlisting the aid of the other Pacific Rim nations to oppose China at all costs. We should be actively trying to organize a bulwark against China.

China is not our friend and they will not suddenly become our friend because we held the Olympics there.

Certainly, though, should open conflict occur, or obvious build up to war is concerned, trade should be ceased with such a state. We should have, for instance, cut off relations with Germany long before we did before WWII.

Lastly, there is some small merit to the "trade will civilize them" argument, but only in so much as the nation to be "civilized" wishes to BE so civilized. China does not. Pol Pot did not. Neither Nazi Germany nor the Soviets wanted to be so civilized. And all the trade policies in the world did nothing to move these nations. WAR did it. Military pressure did it. Government opposition did it.

And, again, I couldn't care less about the athletes. Their little endeavors mean close to nothing to me. If they want to go to a communist nation for their little games, that is up to them.

I agree with some of what you say Warner

I agree that China should not have been awarded the Olympics and we should only make trade arrangements that benefit us. I also agree that we should be actively enlisting aid of other Pacific Rim Nations to oppose them.

The Soviet Union didn't want to be civilized but Gorbachev's liberalization of their economy lead to freedom for many of the former Republics and Russia. Chili's Pinochet was a monster and when he allowed market reforms it lead to his downfall. Even the Royal family in England came to have much less power as market reforms were implemented.
I truly believe that free markets lead to free people.

There is a great book and Documentary that I agree 100% with called Commanding Heights by Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw that explains it very well.
It's not the kind of thing that causes overnight changes and I'm sure it will continue to be very slow with China, but I think it will happen eventually. It's a theory of course and can't be proven. It's one of those things that you believe in based on other things that have happened in other places. No two countries have the exact same dynamics so you can never know what will happen for sure. I sure hope I'm right because I don't see anyone taking down China.

Dee...

Boy, I entirely disagree that Gorbachev had anything at all to do with liberalizing the Soviets system. His was a last ditch effort to keep control and I doubt very seriously that any of the so-called "reforms" he contemplated would have stayed for two seconds once the Politburo felt they had regained complete control.

I do not in any way hold that Gorbachev was a benevolent leader. The ONLY reason any reforms were even proposed was because of Reagan's efforts at opposing the Soviets. Not because Gorby was such a great guy.

I give Gorby no credit whatsoever and find it absurd that he is held in any high esteem on par with Ronald Reagan or the Pope or even Thatcher. He was a nonentity who lost his entire nation with his inept leadership. But even his weakness and inability to succeed was preordained by the success of Reagan's policies.

Gorbachev is a nothing that deserves no accolades.

I completely agree that the credit goes to Reagan

Gorbachev wasn't a great guy and neither was Pinochet, but they did allow market reforms and it eventually lead to more freedom. I don't give Pinochet the credit. He was a complete monster.

If China becomes free, I'm not going to credit their brutal government either. Just because they don't want it (and they don't) doesn't mean it won't happen. The credit in all cases goes to the U.S. and G.B. we are the only major ones who fight for it.

† Dee

But doesn't some of the credit go to the Chinese government's understanding that we sill try to woo them with capitalism while allowing major detriment to fair trade be placed on our own economy?

♣ a seal

Cool - that is a credit to them for their economy

but not the personal freedoms when and if they happen.

I do think we give them too much, but being out of balance some is okay when we have so much more.

As to Pinochet

As far as Pinochet goes, he was a bad man, but he has a history that you can follow to show his turn toward market reforms. You can also clearly see that his efforts led to Chile become one of the most stable, democratic nations of the area.

On the other hand, no such history exists for Gorbachev. His were furtive attempts to keep power that almost immediately failed and ended with his ouster and the fall of his entire government.

In the long run, Gorby was meaningless while Pinochet, as bad a person as he was, did things that did, indeed, lead to a better life for his people in the long run.

So, I see no comparison between the two.

We are back to agreeing Warner!

I agree with everything you said this time, except the very last line because I do see a comparison even though the situations were very different. In both cases I still think it was the markets that brought the freedom.

I do have a very convoluted mind and see comparisons where others wouldn't. I wish I were better at explaining this strange mind of mine, but I often fall short.

The only thing is I would think of man in his 70s might have a more intelligent remark than than I have the hots for free. Sad really :-(

Scoreboard

Actually fs

I am loving this. I just said in front of the whole board and you are still embarrassing yourself. Since you are Dee's hero perhaps she will answer the question if you refuse to. Except for free's steller aunt comment, what great debating points did he have?

Oh and free, giving clear thinker a point for him saying I have the hots for you? Maybe you are sicker than I thought. Anyone reading this can see you are getting unravelled, of course some like dee will come to your defense, but your down to cheap smears

You do realize that you're

You do realize that you're the one who controls how much the scoreboard upsets (or doesn't) you, don't you?

Hmmmm?

ummm where were we?

we were talking about what intelligent remarks you made? Your squirming and can't answer the question. Any in biased poster can see this.

Don't change the subject fs, give NB some credit. They can see your changing the subject.

As I said early - let go of the anger.

Shawn,

let's see if I have this right.

  1. I led with the scoreboard in reply to you remarking how great Cnadian Healthcare was
  2. When you demended I come up with someting better, I did and told you who gave me the idea that Canadian healthcare is so bad.
  3. You got pissed off because you lived in Canada and didn't agree
  4. I still prefer to take the word of my Aunt and my buddy's wife over yours.
  5. I used the scorecard on you when I thought someone else was doing a better job on this very thread.

As I said early - let go of the anger.

Uh, have you been drinking? I re-read my previous post and didn't see anything about "the Lists" It really pisses you off there are so many people creating lists that contradict your firmly held beliefs, doesn't it?

Your the one that is coming into people I comment to

It's "you're", the contraction of "you are". And I've been over this before. (PAY ATTENTION) You're commenting in the open.

It is you that decided to start this silly thing with your scoreboard

Why is the scoreboard silly? I am expressing my opinion about who is winning and losing the argument. You suddenly don't belive in Free Speech?

And you never did answer the question about if you're living in the US or Canada.

huh

ummmm read below?

huh

Ummm stop drinking?

huh right back

You did ask say I did not answer your question if I lived in Canada or the USA or am i misreading

I wil abstain from sarcasm for this one post. I mentioned your awards, but that was not my question. I am asking about how you used any intelliegent debate. Or was it sarcasm and smears.

thank you

Why don't you explain why

Why don't you explain why you think the scoreboard is silly?

Your changing the subject again free

but I will allow it this time, because I would love to talk about
it. I actually would not mind the scoreboard if you were a little more
bi partision. You use it as a release for harrassing or
vindinctiveness. Im stil unsure why you called bigtimer and RINO and
had no backup at all. And oh yes.......a fellow conservative said your
scoreboard was childish. I mean i'm sure some members like your
scoreboard, You still won;t answer her on why she is a rino.

It just kind of sad free.

vindicitve

You use it as a release for harrassing or vindinctiveness.

How is the scoreboard vindicitve?

And it's "you're", the contraction of "you" and "are"

(UPDATE) Let's continue here. Warner shouldn't have his blog clogged up with this BS.

Appologies Warner.

Not to excuse the public school system

But I used to have Romans 6, 7, and 8 completely memorized when I was nine.  I might remember 3 verses now, 14 years later.  It's not necessarily the fault of the school system, but just like me, most people don't find most of the information taught to them during their school years relevant, so they forget the "less important" things, and try to hold onto the parts that tend to be more beneficial to them, at least in their own minds.

And I was home-schooled, folks, so you know that my opinion of the public school system isn't necessarily one of the color rose.  I just think that more blame should be placed on the individual for not caring enough to discover or rediscover some of the other important parts of the learning experience.
