Has anyone else noticed how chilling it has been during the past few days? Not chilly (though it's been that too). Chilling.
On Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency declared, in the Associated Press's words, that "greenhouse gas emissions are a danger and must be regulated."
The AP, in the item just linked, and many other news outlets carried U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donahue's warning that regulations based on EPA's declaration could lead to "a top-down command-and-control regime that will choke off growth by adding new mandates to virtually every major construction and renovation project."
Two days later, in an item carried at FoxNews.com that says it was the result of contributions by Fox's Major Garrett and the AP, a White House official confirmed the legitimacy of Donahue's stated fear (bolds are mine):
Administration Warns of 'Command-and-Control' Regulation Over Emissions
Story Continues Below Ad ↓The Obama administration is warning Congress that if it doesn't move to regulate greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency will take a "command-and-control" role over the process in a way that could hurt business.
The warning, from a top White House economic official who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity, came on the eve of EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson's address to the international conference on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark.
.... while administration officials have long said they prefer Congress take action on climate change, the economic official who spoke with reporters Tuesday night made clear that the EPA will not wait and is prepared to act on its own.
And it won't be pretty.
"If you don't pass this legislation, then ... the EPA is going to have to regulate in this area," the official said. "And it is not going to be able to regulate on a market-based way, so it's going to have to regulate in a command-and-control way, which will probably generate even more uncertainty."
Climate change legislation that passed the House is stuck in the Senate, but the EPA finding Monday was seen as a boost to the U.S. delegation in Denmark trying to convince other countries that Washington is capable of taking action to follow through with any global commitments.
The economic official explained that congressional action could be better for the economy, since it would provide "compensation" for higher energy prices, especially for small businesses dealing with those higher energy costs. Otherwise, the official warned that the kind of "uncertainty" generated by unilateral EPA action would be a huge "deterrent to investment," in an economy already desperate for jobs.
"So, passing the right kind of legislation with the right kind of compensations seems to us to be the best way to reduce uncertainty and actually to encourage investment," the official said.
It seems to me that an administration threatening "command and control," with its echoes of authoritarian regimes throughout history -- an approach that an opponent predicted would occur, and which has now been promised -- might be, well, I don't know, news at establishment media outlets other than Fox. But, with rare exceptions, it's not (and spare me the prattle about sourcing to a single anonymous person, which the establishment press employs whenever it sees fit).
At the New York Times, the only relevant result of an advanced search on "command and control" (not in quotes) is a December 8 editorial referring to Donahue's quote.
At the Associated Press, a search on "command and control" (also without quotes) comes back with nothing relevant besides the industry reaction item mentioned at the beginning of this post.
A Google News Search on [EPA "command and control"] (typed exactly as indicated between brackets) for December 9-12, sorted by date, comes back with 50 items. Other than two items in the Wall Street Journal from Kim Strassel and James Taranto, plus editorials in the Charleston (WV) Daily Mail and New York Post, no establishment media outlet has recognized the existence of Fox's Major Garrett-AP "command and control" report.
It almost goes without saying that if a Bush 43 or Bush 41 "White House" official had promised "command and control" regulation of any aspect of American life, anonymously sourced or not, that phrase would have been all over news outlets everywhere. But when an official of this administration makes a specific promise that a type of regime normally associated with tyrants will be imposed on the entire economy if Congress doesn't impose its own version of that type of regime, there's stone silence from the establishment media's self-styled defenders of freedom.
Oh, and I almost forgot to note that an APB has gone out on the far left for any and all information that might discredit the Chamber's Donahue.
It's going to take more than adding another sweater to do something about this government-driven, media-complicit chill.

When are our elected
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 11:20 ET by motherbeltWhen are our elected representatives going to stand up against this unconscionable arrogation of power?
This is an outrage, and our representatives are standing for it.
Even Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat, opposes this and told the President so.
"Shut up", they explained.
From Charles Krauthammer's column yesterday:
Democratic Sen. Jim Webb wrote the president protesting that he
lacks the authority to do so unilaterally. That requires congressional
concurrence by legislation or treaty.
With the Senate blocking President Obama's cap-and-trade carbon
legislation, the EPA coup d'etat served as the administration's loud
response to Webb: The hell we can't. With this EPA "endangerment"
finding, we can do as we wish with carbon. Either the Senate passes
cap-and-trade, or the EPA will impose even more draconian measures: all
cap, no trade.
Surely Webb isn't the only Democrat who doesn't like this!
And at Copenhagen, there is no room for dissent.

Perhaps what needs to happen
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 11:34 ET by Dan The Man 2Perhaps what needs to happen is a challenge to the primises of the carbon and AGW. A court challenge, but teh EPA is a juggernaut and teh President gets to say who is in charge.
No New News Here Other Than The Dumb Statement by the EPA
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 11:34 ET by John Galt1776Obama's approach to everything is
1. Leave it up to his minions to get done to continue his slave reparations program mainly through expansion of government.
2. If his minions can't get it done then he resorts to African strongman style tactics.
So now
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 12:33 ET by jessieHSo now the EPA has decided to screw the citizens, too. The EPA was invented by the govt. When the govt. falls, the citizens will take down the EPA, as well.
Perhaps Obama's puppet masters are not pleased...
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 13:39 ET by R D Helm...with the progress of the coup, and have decided to bypass the Senate entirely and implement Crap & Tax anyway.
This means we are no longer two, but now just one Senate vote away from losing our country.
Should CommieCare pass, OIbama's coup will be complete, and we'll be pretty much finished as a free nation.
Nice going, America.

I can't believe this
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 14:14 ET by WorriedCommand and control? The Obama admin. has become the Nazi Party.
This is the scariest thing I've heard yet!
Who will help us when we become one more thugocracy?
God please help us.
Worried....time to change your name to "Frightened"
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 14:32 ET by BlondeIt gets worse, much worse.
I lifted my pal's (Par for the Course) link from our Health Care Forum to further scare you out of your wits.
Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid of Obama's Latest Big Brother Plan
I'm scared. Truly.
I hope he fails, too.
OMG
Sat, 12/12/2009 - 15:39 ET by WorriedYes, I should change my name to Frightened.
I just read the article on Fox and I'm shaking in my boots.
I can't believe the Democrats would wield so much power Obama's way. If they do with this healthcare takeover bill I believe the transformation that Obama promised will be completed.
What comes after that?
The American People...
Sun, 12/13/2009 - 01:50 ET by Army BratThe Constitution, our elected representatives...all of it...now made irrelevant.
Didn't Obama tell us that he viewed the Constitution as an impediment? He became a Constitutional law Professor for a reason. He studied the Constitution the way one enemy studies another. To learn how to defeat that enemy, neutralize it, circumvent it...thus he knows the Constitution well.
There are too many like our Senator Begich that will do whatever they are told by his fellow Socialists...political suicide or not. They'll be taken care of. Some company or another will hire them as a consultant...something, and so they fall on their swords for Obama.
And in the meantime the Republic suffers, its people suffer.
And for what purpose? To prove once again that Socialism/Marxism is doomed to fail? That Capitalism is the system that works? Do we need to learn once again that the individual freedoms of individual people are to be held in higher regard than the desires and dreams of a few Utopian minded, elitists who will never suffer the consequences of their decisions?
That lesson was learned at Jamestown many years ago. The first failed attempt at a Socialist system on this continent.
They starved and died the first winter because no one owned anything. All was communal. Wives cooked for everyone, not their family. No one saw the fruits of their labor. They "called in sick", arrived late, left early. Only a few worked hard. The harvest reflected that.
Things changed the next year. Men owned their land. Moms cooked for their families. Profits were made, trade began with the Native people. There was bounty and the first Thanksgiving took place, thanks to private ownership and budding Capitalism.
Both Mao and Stalin starved 10s of millions in their experimentation with Socialism and Marxism. How much blood can one failed ideology spill? How much does it take before the flood makes an impression on those that tout its superiority over that of our present Republic? But then...don't we hear from our liberal friends time and time again that, sacrifices must be made? And they will be made, just not by those that command them.
islam is a lie and Truth is killing it.
Could it be worst news for Dems?
Sun, 12/13/2009 - 02:40 ET by JimmeI at first was outraged when I heard of this latest glaring example of
Obama's willingness to sidestep the natural checks and balances of our
government. This is staring to get serious now.
Then I thought, if the Reps could successfully block cap-n-trade with the
help of sensible Democrats. The EPA goes through with its threats, thus
destroying the economy further for the next three years. This could seriously
harm the DNC at every branch of government.
With a sweeping change in government wouldn't it be easier to deal with the
EPA rather then try to undo a massive bill?
