Note -- A related November 5 story at KHAQ in advance of the Obama-Blago meeting that is no longer available at KHAQ's site is here at my web host. It has been taken down from the related web site, and I believe its Google cache has also been removed.
(original post follows)
Yes indeed (content at original link was deleted; current link is to copy at my web host; HT to an e-mailer, who tells me that “this is (in) the newspaper from Quincy, IL from KHQA, a CBS affiliate”; bold is mine):
By Alexis Hunt
Saturday, November 08, 2008 at 9:48 p.m.Duckworth comments on consideration for Senate
QUINCY, IL -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.
Obama met with Governor Rod Blagojevich earlier this week to discuss it. Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement. There's already been speculation about his selection...from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Junior to Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth.
Obama, yesterday (a quote that, strangely enough, seems barely present on Google News, and on Google Web):
"I have had no contact with the governor or his office, so I was unaware of what was happening.”
My take: Barack Obama was, at best, trying to limit his "no contact" statement to the last few days of Blago's troubles without saying so.
But if so, why did David Axelrod feel the need to back off his assertion of November 23 that "I know he’s [Obama] talked to the governor [about the Senate vacancy] and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them"?
Somebody's pants are on fire.
It seems surreal that this would be "breaking news" a full 21 hours after Obama's "no contact" statement. But there it is.
I believe Obama's call for Blago's immediate resignation is as much a matter of self-protection as it is any interest in getting rid of a corrupt governor. The faster Blago goes away, the more quickly Obama's apparent untruth becomes "old, irrelevant news" to Old Media.
______________________________________________
UPDATE: Let's also not forget that Obama spoke at the National Governors Association conference last week, and that Blago was there:
Obama promises governors he'll be listening
Reporting from Philadelphia -- The nation's governors came to tell tales of financial woe, but President-elect Barack Obama was already sold on them playing a role in the national economic recovery plan.
..... Governors also asked for help to expand children's healthcare, to continue unemployment benefits and for continued support of food stamps and Medicaid.
Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich, a Democrat, was among those arguing that money should go directly to people bearing the brunt of the worsening economy. Facing an estimated $2-billion deficit, Blagojevich has already made budget cuts that closed state parks and historic sites.
"The more help we can give to the average American, the better the economy will be," Blagojevich said. "And it's a far better way than bailing out a few corporate, well-connected entities that have powerful lobbyists."
It's a little difficult to believe that Obama and Blago "had no contact" during the conference.
UPDATE, Dec. 11: I was right; they had "contact" (HT Hot Air) --
Given that Obama's statement had no qualifications, this moves it definitively into the "false" category, regardless of all of the backtracking KHQA does from its own November 5 and 8 stories.

Company he keeps
December 10, 2008 - 23:02 ET by Georgia GirlThis whole mess is just another example of why the issue of character DOES matter. This does taint Obama, but for me, he's been tainted all along with how he continues to look the other way when it suits him. It's about character -- and sorry if that doesn't sound cool in today's era, but someone's true character is the foundation of everything you can expect from them. Whenever conservatives express that a person's character is a determining factor in their decisions on who they vote for, etc., they are automatically judged by the Left as total wackos or self righteous jerks. I, for one, mean it when I say that I will look at a person's character first, and it is the most reliable indicator to me of what I can expect them to produce...and the company that Obama has kept through the years (or enviroments he puts himself into) DOES matter. It doesn't pass the "laugh test" to believe that Obama has often been associated with/in the company of/touching the coats of/co-mingling on committees or house deals, etc. with so many people that keep coming up dirty in the wash...Yet Obama is always, magically & mystically -- unaware of anything?? He is always vaguely connected to others...vaguely unaware of them personally...vaguely making his way through the stench around him! So...he either is totally lacking in awareness and good judgement...or he just takes from everything/everybody what he needs & then moves along to the next stop on his way. It appears this is a pattern with him; apparently, it's like a philosophy he has adopted on how to get what he wants, with as little muss & fuss as possible. He's squishy. He sounds good and looks right, but make no mistake: he has a real character problem. That should matter, in regard to the public's ability to trust him -- at least, to those who do realize his character is lacking and, because of it, his judgment isn't going to be of worth. He's just too intelligent (and has shown nimbleness to maneuver whenever called for) to believe that he never sees the bad or correctly analyzes disreputable people he has had more than passing contact with...it's all about character. In the end, it matters.

On an unrelated note (but still along the lines of rooting on conservatism), I have a book recommendation for anybody who's interested. When you get a minute, check out Mike Huckabee's new book, "Do the Right Thing." You won't be disappointed (well, you will be if you are against everything he stands for). I couldn't put it down. You know Obama's track
December 10, 2008 - 15:15 ET by dscottYou know Obama's track record after he sees his position is untenable he then gives a weak mea culpa while blaming someone else, "the devil made me do it" defense. I think in this case Obama is going to go something like this: "When my staff was first approached by Blagojevich about giving something in kind for granting my preference of who was best suited to represent the people to take my senate seat, I was appalled. However, I didn't wish to sully the name of the great state of Illinois and hoped my rebuff would be the end of the matter. However, the governor continued to insist on receiving some kind of benefit and then sought to do an end run with other parties for the person I felt best suited which potentially would give the implication that I engaged in a pay for play transaction. I was beside myself, I felt trapped and thought silence was the best means to put distance between myself and the governor's behavior. In retrospect, I should have gone to the FBI, explained my predicament and trusted them to do their job as they ultimately did. I had no idea, the FBI was actively investigating the governor, had I known so, I would have notified them immediately. I apologize for showing poor judgement not to trust the authorities, however I in no way attempted to purchase by any means the choice of who would occupy the Illinois senate seat."

This is the best defense I have seen of Hussein (hey it's alright to call him that again), The MSM is setting up an insanity defense for Blago. December 10, 2008 - 14:13 ET by Jack BauerI have a theory to explain this. The Missing Wiretaps Theory.
It has been noted there is a very ODD three week gap in the wiretap audios produced by Fitzmas yesterday.
It's worth considering this:
It's not too far-fetched to opine that sometime between Nov 5 and Nov 23, some Democrat at Justice tipped off the Obama camp on the investigation of the Blag. And of the wiretaping.
This would neatly explain a couple of things.
#1. The missing WIRETAPS which may include Obamabots talking about the very thing they deny.
#2. The on-tape swearing of the Blag against Obama when he thinks he's been suddenly ditched on the subject of what's in it for him for bequeathing the Senate seat.
I find it very suspicious that the INSTANT media (which means Obama) spin is to claim that the m-f tapes played demonstrate the lofty innocence of Obama.

But I am curious why this story apparently wasn't reported in mainstream media outlets a month ago, instead of being limited to a couple of short splurbs on a rather obscure TV website. That in and of itself would seem to undermine its authenticity. However, whether or not the alleged meeting actually occurred should be fairly simple to verify.

December 11, 2008 - 18:29 ET by JerAssuming the Chicago politician to whom you refer is Obama, what precisely is the senseless lie he told?
I think it is a virtual certainty that there was some sort of contact at some point in time between an Obama advisor or emissary with Blagojevich relating to the senate replacement. I am as curious as everyone else regarding the details of that contact.
But those facts don't necessarily corroborate the KHQA website splurbs, which is the issue I was addressing.

As I suggested in other
December 12, 2008 - 08:56 ET by dscottAs I suggested in other posts, Obama is being very careful so as not to get himself entangled in a conspiracy charge. The mere fact he and his staffers had discussions with Blagojevich COULD be viewed by the FBI as being part of the pay for play deal making. What in all probability happened was Obama's staffers relayed the offer, Obama rejected it and when Blagojevich threatened to hold the appointment hostage for his own purposes, Obama pulled out of the discussion.
That a discussion did occur between Blagojevich and Obama can't be denied at this point since Blagojevich has publicly stated before the scandal broke that he and Obama were talking about it (whether that be face to face or via intermediaries, i.e. staffers). Obama is foolish for denying the obvious since this makes him look guilty of a cover up.
The real issue for Obama is not that he didn't like the idea of paying to get his choice for the senate seat, the real issue is that Obama did not contact the proper authorities, the FBI, to report Blagojevich for attempting to engage in fraud, i.e. enterprise corruption. This is particularly troubling since as the President-elect, the leader of our country, this man chose to allow a corrupt politician to carry on with his activity with no opposition. As the POTUS, we expect him to uphold the Law, set the example and not tolerate those who feel they can use their position for personal gain. By Obama not outting Blagojevich to the FBI, what he has essentially said by his deliberate inaction is his loyalty to the Democrat Party is greater than his loyalty to the United States of America. Because why would he not report Blagojevich to the FBI? To spare the Democrat Party (or possibly his long standing friend & ally) the public humiliation of another corruption scandal.

December 10, 2008 - 15:15 ET by Joe C.As a show of respect for America's choice. Pres. Bush should preemptively pardon Obama before he takes office for any role he may have played in the Blago scandal so that he doesn't have to start his administration under a(nother) cloud of corruption.
I never had discussions with that man, Mr. Blagojavich.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!
Alan Keyes / Sarah Palin - 2012
It doesn't take long
December 10, 2008 - 15:33 ET by ahusserFor the scandals to start. Clinton and Obama's started before they even were in office. I think they are going to blame Bush on this one. Here is how the democratic "logic" will unfold: Because President Bush was so evil, inept, stupid, with the world on the brink of total destruction from _______ whatever (etc.) and the Republican culture of corruption so rampant we would not have rushed to get anybody elected and we would have investigated the candidates more thouroughly. Besides Obama uses that deep cleaning scandal safe Clinton Detergent with scientifically formulated time release teflon particles that are released during the spin cycle. Nothing ever sticks after only one use.

December 10, 2008 - 15:59 ET by Wilbur747what happens if Jesse Jr. doesn't get the nod?
Will Jesse Sr., Sharpton and Farrahkan lead a million man march to the state and boycott every business until they contribute to the Rainbow Coalition and appoint Jesse Jr.?
Of course, they'll all claim racism amd bigotry...and homophobia...and yada, yada.

SEIU's members are temperamentally suited to Obama; he is a longtime friend of Chicago's SEIU Local 880 and worked closely with the union as an organizer and later as a state legislator.

Of course, that would mean that PEBO was lying when he said he had no "contact" with Bloggo...)

A clarification from KHQA.

"The story housed in our website archive was on the morning of November 5, 2008. It suggested that a meeting was scheduled later that day between President Elect Obama and Illinois Governor Blagojevich. KHQA has no knowledge that any meeting ever took place. Governor Blagojevich did appear at a news conference in Chicago on that date."
