'Obamazebo' Project Under Investigation; Sun-Times Follows Up; Drudge Takes Note

obamazebosign.jpgThis post updates primary work done by the Chicago Sun-Times in July (accompanying video is here), this September 7 post at NewsBusters, and two related posts (here and here) at BizzyBlog. Graphics are mostly courtesy of NewsBusters commenter "tnculp." Hat tips go to all who tipped me to the news.

In a Thursday story by Chris Fusco and Dave McKinney that has been linked by Drudge, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on the latest developments relating to what was supposed to be a Barack Obama-sponsored $1.1 million botanical garden in an economically blighted area on the South Side of Chicago -- complete with "a gazebo, a parrot sanctuary, and a walk of fame."

While an Illinois state senator in 2001, Obama, as the Sun-Times reported in July, "gave $100,000 in state money to a campaign volunteer who failed to deliver" on the initial phase of the work or to garner additional community funds, leaving "what was supposed to be a six-block stretch of trees and paths ..... a field of unfulfilled dreams, strewn with weeds, garbage and broken pavement."

Now Illinois' Attorney General is investigating, and has determined where much of the money went -- sort of (bolds are mine throughout this post):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A $100,000 state grant for a botanic garden in Englewood that then-state Sen. Barack Obama awarded in 2001 to a group headed by a onetime campaign volunteer is now under investigation by the Illinois attorney general amid new questions, prompted by Chicago Sun-Times reports, about whether the money might have been misspent.

The garden was never built. And now state records obtained by the Sun-Times show $65,000 of the grant money went to the wife of Kenny B. Smith, the Obama 2000 congressional campaign volunteer who heads the Chicago Better Housing Association, which was in charge of the project for the blighted South Side neighborhood.

Smith wrote another $20,000 in grant-related checks to K.D. Contractors, a construction company that his wife, Karen D. Smith, created five months after work on the garden was supposed to have begun, records show. K.D. is no longer in business.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan -- a Democrat who is supporting Obama's presidential bid -- is investigating "whether this charitable organization properly used its charitable assets, including the state funds it received," Cara Smith, Madigan's deputy chief of staff, said Wednesday.

In addition to the 2001 grant that Obama directed to the housing association as a "member initiative," the not-for-profit group got a separate $20,000 state grant in 2006.

Madigan's office has notified Obama's presidential campaign of the probe, which was launched this week. But Obama's actions in awarding the money are not a focus of the investigation, Smith said.

..... Obama vowed to "work tirelessly" to raise $1.1 million to help Smith's organization turn the City of Chicago-owned lot into an oasis of trees and paths. But Obama lost the congressional race, no more money was raised, and today the garden site is a mess of weeds, chunks of concrete and garbage. The only noticeable improvement is a gazebo.

..... Citing the garden's failure to take root, NeighborSpace -- an umbrella group for dozens of community gardens citywide -- moved Sept. 9 to return the site to the city. Its action followed a July 11 Sun-Times report on the grant.

..... Neither Smith nor his wife has been accused of any wrongdoing. Smith and his lawyer did not return repeated calls seeking comment.

Fusco and McKinney further reported that they found one contractor on the project who apparently received no more than $3,000 for work that contractor as "Clean up the area and cut the trees -- that's all." Smith claimed in July that this contractor did "underground work, but the original Sun-Times report "found no evidence of the work Smith cited." Regardless, what Mr. and Mrs. Smith did with the remaining $97,000 (perhaps minus the cost of the now-decaying gazebo) remains unexplained.

Readers can go to a new video at today's Sun-Times story and decide for themselves how credible Mr. Smith is. I'll just say that where Mr. Smith thought the rest of the money was going to come from is totally different from what he was telling people in 2000 and 2001.

The Sun-Times has clearly done very thorough and tenacious work over the past few months, and I don't want to minimize that. At the same time, I hope the Sun-Times doesn't mind it if I question whether NeighborSpace's move to give up the site was in reaction the paper's July story, or to the heavily-trafficked September 7 NewsBusters and BizzyBlog posts that gave the situation wider distribution.

The referenced gazebo is what "tnculp" famously dubbed the Obamazebo:

obamazebo.jpg

Maybe Obama's "actions" aren't under investigation by the state's Democratic Attorney General, but his vaunted "Judgment to Lead" should be.

Paraphrasing what I wrote earlier this month and back in July, this sad saga is no trifling matter, but rather goes directly to the Illinois Senator's fitness to be president:

  • In July, Obama claimed that the state governor's staff should have been monitoring the grant. This shows that he felt no sense of responsibility for the results of money directed to someone HE chose, and despite a previous promise to "work tirelessly" to ensure that the project came to fruition. This isn't "the buck stops here" of Harry Truman fame; this is "the buck went somewhere else."
  • Gubernatorial staffs aren't responsible for monitoring projects like this. The blame-shifting to other pols is either hopelessly naive (a legitimate possibility, given the Obama's seemingly endless well of ignorance) or irresponsible.
  • If you look at the full text of the press release that announced the project in 2000, you'll see that Smith was on hand, that he made representations about how he was "work(ing) with a variety of governmental agencies and not-for-profit groups to secure funding this project," and that he had "made some progress." My bet: Smith had, at most, met with a few organizations once or twice, and was blowing smoke about his realistic chances of getting money. For a nominal $550 in campaign contributions and some volunteer hours, Smith got 100 grand, which "somehow" mostly made its way to him and his wife, with no real accountability thus far. Face it: Obama got hustled. I doubt that he even looked into how the rest of the "fund-raising" was going before directing the release of the grant funds.
  • Perhaps that's why Obama seems oddly indifferent to what ultimately happened. The response from his spokesman (and not the candidate) is tired boilerplate about "provid(ing) residents with a livable neighborhood." Zzzzzz.

The larger point is this: The guy is hopelessly gullible, can't even get a $100,000 grant right, and now wants to have the final say in matters relating to a $3-plus trillion federal budget and a $14-trillion economy in a town chock full of con artists and tricksters.

Yikes. We're talking about something that, using Obama's own words on a different matter, is way above his pay grade -- and his abilities.

The Obama campaign's reaction to the latest developments is more snooze material, as Fusco and McKinney noted:

Obama spokesman Michael Ortiz said Wednesday the senator's staff in Washington will monitor the Madigan probe and an additional review under way by Gov. Blagojevich's administration to make sure "the taxpayer funds allocated for the construction of the garden are recuperated from CBHA if the agencies determine that the funds were not properly spent." Obama's goal is to ensure the site "be used in a way that benefits the community and that any taxpayer dollars allocated are spent wisely," Ortiz said.

Well, that would be a switch.

Thank goodness that Drudge is helping get the Obamazebo snafu a bit more of the national visibility it deserves. I'll bet that very few traditional media outlets, if any, will.

I have to admit I'm

I have to admit I'm surprised the Some-Times is investigating anything that might splash on Obama. They were so in the tank for him during the primaries, and the self-described "progressive conscience of the city" can hardly be called pro-McCain.

It's late. I'll sort this out and maybe make a more meaningful comment tomorrow.  ;^O

But don't hold your breath.  ;^)

"... smells like... victory." - Robert Duvall

McCain: "country first" -- Obama: me first

Need I say more?

You've got it all wrong.

You've got it all wrong. It's not a "ObaMazebo", it's a O-bio-sphere. They just don't have raised enough money to lure Pauly Shore away from his booming showbiz career, yet.

I don't buy the innocence

I don't buy the innocence of Obama yet.

This smells like a honeypot operation, money given to a supporter with no mention of competitive bidding, revisited again several years later and thrown more money at, the monies dispersed in a nepotistic slushfund fashion, and all performed without competent, if any, oversight in place.

Dig deeper into the relationship of Obama and the Smiths.  Continue to follow the money.  Obama has a long history of shady associates.  This may be another one.

And why isn't Obama being investigated?  He specifically earmarked the money for a campaign supporter.  Obama is known to support shady groups as he did with Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

Well now we know what Obama

Well now we know what Obama means when he says he will "work tirelessly" at something.

And I guess we can expect to see this on all major network news shows, right?

Riiiiight!

Off-topic, but still about money...

Speaking of wasting money, I wanted to put this in the post where CBS had to apologize for the mistake regarding the cost of Cindy McCain's outfit, but I can't find that post.

Anyway, I tried to find a pair of $280,000(2 ct., I believe) diamond earrings online.  I looked at the more exclusive stores, such as Blue Nile which tends to have pricier jewelry.  I couldn't find anything  approaching that in the 2 ct. range.  I did find some 6 ct. tw. ones, but they still weren't $280,000, and believe me, you would know that those were 6 ct. diamond earrings, not the ones "you can't even see"(as mentioned on other blogs).  So, I Googled $280,000 diamond earrings.  AMAZING!!  The only ones that I could find were the ones mentioned by Vanity Fair as a GUESSTIMATE, after they assumed everything she had on was exclusive designer outfits and real jewelry, and then taken as fact by every other left news agency and blog out there.

Now, we come to find out that Mrs. McCain bought her dress off the rack and not all of her jewelry was real.  Maybe Vanity Fair, et. al need to do a little fact-checking before printing something that is taken as FACT.  I still can't find those $280,000 diamond earrings that VF mentions.  Does anyone besides me think this is looking more and more like a way for VF and the left to smear the McCain's and make them look like out of touch "elitists" who "don't get" the American people?  I still can't find any $280,000 diamond earrings!!

Where did Vanity Fair get that figure(the cost of a house, maybe?)?  Did they ask Cindy McCain about her outfit and jewelry?  Did they ask her when she got the earrings?  How about if they were a gift from someone?  She wears them quite often.  How much did she or Sen. McCain spend on them, if they even purchased them?  So many, many questions about the $280,000 diamond earrings, that don't seem to be sold anywhere, that are unanswered by an article that is based on someone's GUESSTIMATE!

Get a clue and do a little fact-checking before you write an article, especially as I found 4 pages on Google of blogs and articles that are now mentioning this as FACT due to an unreliable article that includes a guessing-game.

diamonds

Here is a company that offers unique sizes (since at this point, each diamond will be cut as little as possible, the carats may be fractionated). The 5.44tw studs are $38,000. Those are some BIG diamonds - each at 2.72 carats. They are not the greatest quality, but they are not bad.

 http://www.diamondstudsonly.com/Certified_Diamond_Detail.cfm?ProdID=189428&dids=7903,7904

Even doubling the price of these to get them to maximum quality, or tripling the price to allow for max quality and 1/3 more carat per stone, brings the cost to under $100k. Adding another 50% if some designer stuck his name on them, would still only bring them to $150k.

The $280,000 price sounds as if it was pulled out of thin air. Assuming that the diamonds were even real. And, besides, who cares? Cindy has the right to buy whatever she wants if she wants it. Unlike a lot of the democrat politicians, she didn't STEAL the money, she inherited it, fair and square.

And to be honest, I doubt very much that Cindy McCain wears even $100k earrings.  Some people have this impression that rich people live like Donald Trump or Paris Hilton. Only stupid rich people live like that - the celebrity types. All of the rich people I know, (and several are close to Cindy McCain's range) live pretty modestly overall. They usually have really nice homes, but they drive $60,000 cars - not $300,000 cars. They understand that spending money foolishly is, well foolish!

I don't guess that too many liberals understand this though, since these rich people tend to be fiscal conservatives. It's how they got the money in the first place, and how they keep it.

So?

Crook County politics as usual that will go nowhere because it will be killed in the prosecutor's office and ignored by the LSM.

This is Standard Operating Procedure in Crook County - why does anyone think it'll go beyond the Daley Machine Kill Zone. What? Like Daley or Blagovich  has suddenly forgot the 5th  Amendment bail-out that has served Chicago corruption so well since, uh, forever?

»→ Soak the Folk

Makes sense to me. Obama has a very low opinion of "the folk" he represents.

Obama's "folk" are so happy to have him represent them that they are more than happy to relinquish all claim to any pork he might latch onto.

$1 million dollars to the local hospital (his wife's an administrator) that steers the unsightly "folk" away. But the old lady gets a big raise,

$1.1 million to that lovely gazebo that won't get built because The Master of "the folk" needs the money elsewhere.

"Soak the folk" worked great for Huey Long, and he was white.  It's only fair Obama should be able to soak the folk also.  Obviously "the folk" don't realize that's not a Spring Shower falling down on their backs.

Obama is a great community organizer.  Just ask "the folk".

"they [Obama Campaign] may want me to go sort of hustle up what Lawton Chiles [D] used to call the
'cracker vote' there."" - Bill Clinton

Cool

I think the big problem with the folk is that they think they will be next in line for Obama's handouts. But they fail to realize that the elites only give to other elites....the folk need to stay the folk in order to give poeple like Obama a feeling of true power.

»→ Exactly Badass

Only thing "the folk" have to fear right now is that they will be replaced by "other folk" as a new pity class.

"The folk" don't need to start worrying until the DNC starts putting out scare ads in Spanish.  Oops, too late!!

"[Obama Campaign] may want me to go sort of hustle up what Lawton Chiles [D] used to call the
'CRACKER VOTE' there."" - Bill Clinton

"Just" Guilt by Association!

Once agian, Obama will claim unjust guilt by association attempts by his critics!

It must be hard to fnd good people to hang around with in Chi-town. Poor old Barack just keeps unintentionally running into the wrong kind of people!  And even with his great judgment he just doesn't seem to  be able to tell the crooks, terrorist and biggots from the good guys!

Yeah, that's the kind of CHANGE we need!  We'll all be communists and we won't even notice!

Hey, rest of the World, welcome to Chicago politics.

In Chicago this person will be mocked for only getting $100,000 in "walking around money."  I moved from Cook County to Lake County over twenty years ago but like the rest of Illinois we still support Chicago with our tax money.

This is work for "Community Organizers" in Chicago.

Earmarks...

In general, this raises an important question. Is there any followup whatsoever on ANY earmark to ensure that it is properly spent?

Call me cynical, but I have gut feeling that the answer is no.

Given that there are over 500 congresscrooks in DC, and only a  few like McCain have never asked for one, that means that probably many, many tens of BILLIONS of dollars are earmarked every year.

If the Obamagazebo is any indication, and it probably is, it's likely that a hefty percent of those earmarks are being p*ssed away, with no accountability.

Perhaps it is time for me to write for information from that party in Alaska that the First Dude used to belong to. It will take some kind of very drastic action to clean up the cesspool that government has become at all levels in this country.
