MSNBC: Mark Halperin 'Suspended Indefinitely' for Calling Obama A '[Short for Richard]'

By Tim Graham | June 30, 2011 | 11:19

A  A
Tim Graham's picture

Via TV Newser, we learn that MSNBC has "suspended indefinitely" its senior political analyst Mark Halperin for stating on Morning Joe that President Obama was "kind of a [male appendage]." This is not exactly what the "No Labels" crowd at Morning Joe were expecting. The official MSNBC statement:

Mark Halperin’s comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable. We apologize to the President, The White House and all of our viewers. We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air.  Therefore, Mark will be suspended indefinitely from his role as an analyst.

Ed Schultz drew a week for calling Laura Ingraham a "slut" (on his radio show), but this could be the end of Halperin's tenure on MSNBC, much as the 2008 suspension of David Shuster for suggesting Hillary Clinton was "pimping out" daughter Chelsea marked his time there. In an attempt to keep a chance of returning to MSNBC, Halperin was confessional in his statement:

I completely agree with everything in MSNBC’s statement about my remark. I believe that the step they are taking in response is totally appropriate. Again, I want to offer a heartfelt and profound apology to the President, to my MSNBC colleagues, and to the viewers. My remark was unacceptable, and I deeply regret it.

TV Newser reported that 17 minutes after he said it, Halperin apologized on MSNBC's air: “Joking aside, this is an absolute apology. I became part of the joke. It’s no excuse. I shouldn’t have said it. I apologize to the president and the viewers who heard me say that.”

Politico reports Joe Scarborough was also apologetic: “Certainly (host) Mika (Brzezinski) and I also apologize to viewers,” Scarborough said. “And we hear this all the time - parents come up and say, ‘Hey, by the way, we don’t just watch the show, our kids watch the show.’”

UPDATE: The Huffington Post added comment from Time officials, and from White House press secretary Jay Carney, who complained to MSNBC brass:

Time magazine, where Halperin is Editor-At-Large, issued a statement of its own, saying it had warned Halperin about the comments:

Mark Halperin’s comments on air this morning were inappropriate and in no way reflective of Time’s views. We have issued a warning to him that such behavior is unacceptable. Mark has appropriately apologized on air, via Twitter and on The Page.

The fracas even got a comment from White House Press Secretary Jay Carney (himself a former top editor at Time).

"The comment that was made was inappropriate," he said on Thursday. "It would be inappropriate to say that about any president of any party, and I expressed that to executives at the network. I have no comment on whatever action that network, or any network, or any newspaper might take."

There's nothing 'Heartfelt' about it

Submitted by ChrisNH on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 12:36pm.

Halperin is a Leftist media hack, and the only thing he feels in his heart is the loss of a big paycheck. You would be surprised how 'heartfelt' people can become when their paycheck & prestige (how little of it he had in the first place) simply evaporates overnight.

I agree that it was funny, bkeyser.

Submitted by tekel on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 5:45pm.

Although vulgarity & profanity usually offend my sensibilities, "dick" is one of the mildest terms used. It may even qualify as approved slang. For instance how does it compare for instance to Nixon's private conversations or the vulgarity Can'taBiden confided to Commander Whatever about the "big deal" accomplished. By "confided" I mean not intended to be broadcast.

I think Halperin really believed the "joke" that the program was time delayed & that he would be speaking informally among friends. That might color him stupid. So would his taking a chance so close to airtime. But not extremely vulgar.

I don't know Halperin's work as well as I do a few of MSNBC slime. But I give him credit in this instance for having the mental capacity to express his traitorous thoughts rather than the usual regressive party line. Maybe there is hope for him. I wouldn't mind his being O'Reilly's guest occasionally. I don't see how he could be worse than some allowed to express nonsense in order to balance sane commentary.

Halperin immediately jumps in there saying I was wrong, I shouldn't have said it, etc. Pretty quick apology for someone who should be feeling overwhelmed right now.

When Schultz called Ingraham a slut, you could tell he was in the middle of a rant and said something rude. Halperin had it all planned out to say that - he even asked if they had a profanity delay - so he had to have known this would happen.

I think Halperin should have apologized for using the word, but not for being "disrespectful" of the president. He was clearly talking about Obama the person, and not disrespecting the office.

No one in the media EVER apologized for any of the truly hateful and insulting things they said about George W. Bush, the person, or thought it "disrespectful" of the president.

I would now edit that to say no one in the media was ever EXPECTED or ASKED to apologize for the horrible things they said about Bush.

It Proves Several Things

Submitted by Bourbeau on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 12:08pm.

MSNBC has absolutely no standards for their on-air talent; this kind of stuff has happened repeatedly and apparently it still has not registered with their on-air talent. Things like this just don't happen; it starts in the producing sessions where they allow themselves the liberties to be 'creative', not realizing that their being stupid. All you have to do is watch Matthews, or Maddow; or some of the other personas and you can fully understand how this stuff occurs. Someone needs to be fired - straight-out, no exceptions, no excuses. Whether it's the producer, or the guest, or whoever - fire them; then and only then does the message get sent that the network does not tolerate vulgarity and stupidity on the air.

That being said, there should have only been a handful of media members not suspended during the previous administration.  Some should have been cast out of the profession and not ever mentioned again.

On the other hand calling conservative women insane or stupid isn't nuanced – those insults aren’t “kinda” like anything. They are meant to demean and demonize yet are part of the corporately approved lexicon. Calling a conservative woman a slut (not kinda like a whore—it means whore) will get you just a week off. By example if Obama were called insane – the 30 Rock rent-a-cops would be escorting the offender off the property within minutes. Use the same term for Bachmann and you get an attaboy. Call Michelle Obama a slut, and the offending talking head might soon be headless. The mental masturbators (that means they yack, but say nothing of real worth) at NBC have different standards - and depending on who the target is, one might get a pass and a pat on the back... or a pass to the loading dock and a kick in the ass.

But anyone over at MSNBC can

Submitted by marpel on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 2:16pm.

But anyone over at MSNBC can call a GOP any name in the book, and they're lauded for it...Look at Fat Mr. Ed...Look at Whateveritis Maddow....Look at P.I.M.P. Matthews. Look at the disrespect they paid to W. But, Halperin calls the BO a dick and gets suspended...why are we surprised?

He gets suspended for calling

Submitted by Scuba Dude on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 2:35pm.

He gets suspended for calling Obama rich?   How the heck is that offensive?  Oh wait, isn't Odumbo playing class warfare?  It is apparent that Odumbo wants to play the part of the "little guy" in this propaganda stunt.

Oh, he didn't call him rich? He called that other name?  Hmmm, still don't see the fuss, considering what the libturds have been calling Republicans, Conservatives, Tea Party folks these past few years.

That's Mr. Present-dick to you, sir! ;-)  That's the closest I'll get to calling him a president.  And I didn't just call him one.  He's the dictator in chief.

Tide-E-bowl man to the rescue!

Submitted by Crew Dawg 64 on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 9:54pm.

If MSNBC ever wants to be competitive again they need to stop jiggling the handle and just flush their political pundit morons down the drain. Of course since they are competing against other liberal news outlets, CNN, NBC, CBS and ABC the show must go on.

Clearly the people at MSNBC

Submitted by wiwf on Fri, 07/01/2011 - 10:41am.

Clearly the people at MSNBC have never even talked to a college student or been in the real world. Seriously? Suspending a reporter for using an incredibly mild slur? Le sigh.
