"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward." – Matthew 6:1-2
The publication of Barack Obama’s supposedly secret prayer at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem was a scandal in Israel. James Taranto noted the newspaper Ha’aretz reported calls for police investigations into the removal and publication of the Obama note, published by the newspaper Maariv. But Maariv said it was Obama who authorized the unveiling of his temporarily private message to God.
Maariv's response: "Obama's note was published in Maariv and other international publications following his authorization to make the content of the note public. Obama submitted a copy of the note to media outlets when he left his hotel in Jerusalem. Moreover, since he is not Jewish, there is no violation of privacy as there would be for a Jewish person who places a note in the wall."
Taranto added:
Thus, as IsraelInsider puts it, "what initially seemed to be a journalistic scoop of dubious moral propriety now seems to be a case of an Israeli paper being played by the Barack Obama campaign." Obama's so-called prayer was at best an open letter to God--a sentiment intended for public, not divine, consumption.
Taranto headlined the story "Potemkin Prayer." Obama fans seem very intense in asserting that Obama is a devout Christian, but Obama's act of circulating his own so-called "secret" prayer is an exercise in phoniness and religious vanity. On top of that, the campaign played coy about it. Earlier, the Obama campaign offered a "no comment" when the New York Post asked questions. Will anyone in the "mainstream" media follow up?
Update 07-31 14:13. According to the New Republic, Maariv is denying this, however, the other Israeli papers have not backed off their claim. Surely Obama should be asked about it, no?

Barack Obama is officially a douchebag. There, I said it. Yes I've said in times past that word annoys me, but there's no other vocabulary that can describe such a crass thing to do.
There are few things in life more sacred than putting a letter in the Prayer Wall and Obama treats it as just another PR stunt.

July 30, 2008 - 09:41 ET by goldenthroatR1,
I have stated many times on NB that this egotistical, self-appointed savior of the world is saying nothing about those in the MSM referring to him as "messiah".
First of all, he claims to be a born-again Christian. If he was, he wouldn't be pointing the finger of adoration to himself but to Jesus Christ. He has made no effort to rebuke that designation but seems to relish in the limelight of the devotion of his MSM disciples.
I really believe he has adopted as his own personal slogan: "It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am!"
However, what goes around, comes around - and I believe this is going to come back to bite him in his divine buttinski in November.

July 30, 2008 - 00:44 ET by futbolisgreat1Ok, like the Obama campaign is going to admit that they gave the "prayer" before hand to the meida. HA!! you can't be this naive.
You know, there are a lot of supicious things about how his prayer was allegeldy leaked. No media outlet has given a name of the student that "stole" his prayer from the Wall and gave to the media. Wouldn't you think that by now, someone, somewhere would have gotten the student's name that stole the prayer and leaked it?
Furthermore, if you have ever been to the Wall and seen the pieces of paper that are placed within the Wall, it is impossible, impossible to know which paper is which unless you start going through a bunch of prayers. Do you not believe that people would have stopped the nameless young man when they saw him going through prayers until he found Obama's?
This whole thing stinks to high water.
Obama leaked his prayer. Probably the Obama campaign threaten the newspaper and now they maybe back tracking.
It should be fun to see how fast the pathetic liars at the Obama campaign step all over themselves to save their messiah, Lord Obama.
yeah futbal
July 30, 2008 - 00:47 ET by candanceIt does seem awfully strange that someone in Israel would grab it without permission - and that someone in the media would make up a story about Obama leaking it.
As usual it appears the truth will be found somewhere in the middle.
Candance, The whole thing
July 30, 2008 - 00:58 ET by futbolisgreat1Candance, The whole thing just seems a bit too perfect.messiah, Lord Obama goes to the Wall wearing a skull cap. He writes a prayer and puts in The Wall. Then a few hours later, the media publishes his prayer. They all claim that an unnamed student gave it to them. Now, we have a couple of options here and a few observations.1) Notice how the media didn't have a problem printing a stolen prayer given to them by an unnamed source. However, they have a huge problem reporting on Edward’s story. They hypocrisy is pathetic.2) Given the world of news today, the world of blogging, the internet, etc, someone, somewhere by now would know the name of the young individual that stole the prayer. Funny enough, the unnamed thief remains nameless.3) The Wall is full of thousands, upon thousands, upon thousands, upon thousands of prayers. I would even venture to say that it is in the millions. Unless you were there, taking notes of exactly between which bricks Obama placed the prayer, it would be humanly impossible to find his prayer. And as I said, it would have been reported by the police or someone else that they saw the student rummaged through existing prayers on the Wall until he found Obama's prayers.everything is all too coincidental.
Yeah, I agree with all the naysayers
July 30, 2008 - 10:31 ET by daberkmanI'd like to believe Obama handed this off to a publicist so, despite no evidence for this, it's what I'll believe. Now, to continue to the discussion about how awful it is that he did this (even though he didn't) and to complain about the MSM not reporting it (probably because it didn't happen)...

For some Biblical
July 30, 2008 - 09:14 ET by bradbenj5952For some Biblical perspective on the nature of the Antichrist:
"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God" 2 Thessalonians 2:3 & 4
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." Isaiah 14:12-15

Sure he has his followers who seem to believe in what he is saying...but he's never been made out to be some sort of religious leader, just a politician. As a fellow Catholic, I'm a bit uneasy on the whole end-times stuff - too many people predicting things which only G-d Himself knows about.
But look at the facts - his private message to the Almighty was intentionally given to the press to show how "humble" he is. It is pride in its worst form, and on top of that it's desecration of the Holy Temple. It was bad enough he used the Wall as a campaign stop, complete with posters and all - it should be a solemn and quiet setting, not a media circus.

The men read several of the papers until they apparently found the one they needed and then the guy put his hand over the camera and walked off.
According to the cameraman the men were a part of Obama's entourage, logically pointing to the fact that they were working with his campaign. No one stopped the men or questioned what they were doing.

candance, I think you misunderstood.
The cameraman said:
Seconds after Obama left the stones, some of his entourage stepped up to the wall (dressed in suits) and I recorded a young man gathering notes in his hands in what appeared to be the search for Obama's freshly placed personal note. He is joined by others who unwrap notes and read them.
His entourage were the men in suits. The man who took the note, and the others reading notes from the wall were not; they were in white shirts. Unless the "entourage" was acting as a blind for the guys. But that's unlikely, because they left and the white-shirted guys were still looking.
I don't think we can draw the conclusion that the guy in the white shirt was "with" Obama's group.

July 30, 2008 - 08:16 ET by BuxomAnnieMcGreggorI just had that internal "gut" feeling this entire "leaked" prayer was a phoney balogna..... but look, some might say he's just trying to live up to his word. Didn't he include some kind of Reagan "rip off" in his speach about tearing down walls (read Wailing Wall)?

Attn: God
This is a memo from your supervisor reminding you that any miracles, wonders or peaceful resolutions acheived through your efforts will be credited to me. If you must perform a hurricane or other such natural disaster I compell you to have it completed before I take office so the blame can be sufficiently placed on Bush.
In the even of this memo being leaked to the press, I'd like to reaffirm that humility and candor are the core values of our team.
Thanks in advance,

Rush's take
July 30, 2008 - 19:58 ET by nkviking75Did you hear Rush's line today?
I don't think that The Messiah [Obama] went to the Western Wall to leave a prayer at all. You probably heard that people go to the Western Wall to send messages to God, so he showed up and said, "I'm here to pick up my mail."

It's not a question of who, but of how he will respond
July 30, 2008 - 16:44 ET by CobraManIt's not a question of who removed the prayer and why; it's a question of how Obama will respond. To date, he has not responded. That tells me that he actually doesn't care if his "private" prayer was "leaked" to the press or not. It looks to me that he wants people to read his prayer so that he may pander to the religious voters. That's why he even left a prayer at the wall, with the press in tow. He's desperate to look pious after the Reverend Write fiasco.
If her REALLY wanted to make a private prayer, he would have asked the press to not attend and give him a little privacy. This is nothing more than a media stunt for him. And the added press coverage of this "leaked" prayer will help garner sympathy for him, and that will garner a bit of support.

I really believe that...no matter how hard the leftist always defend and spin for him, the American people are seeing right through them too now...backlash at them to-boot.
I really think by convention time it may be very interesting indeed.

The whole world's a stage - and Osama Bama is the main actor!
July 30, 2008 - 20:55 ET by goldenthroatCobraMan,
I absolutely agree! I watched the video of Osama Bama's "prayer" being "removed" from the wall - or was it?
There are literally hundreds of pieces of paper in that wall on a given day. Even if it was the "prayer", it sure did look like the whole thing was staged to me - just like Osama's Appeasement Tour - which was nothing more than a song-and-dance act for his lordship Obamessiah.
Shades of "Wag the Dog" - if you can't sell the steak, sell the sizzle - because right now that's all Osama Bama has - all style, no substance.
