Edward Gibbon’s “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.” Winston Churchill’s “Second World War.” “What Happened” by Scott McClellan. One of these things is not like the other.
Unless you’re Keith Olbermann, who prophesied yesterday on his show that the former Bush press secretary’s tell-all book would end up being a textbook in college history courses some day.
McClellan was busy making the media rounds yesterday. He first appeared on "The Today Show" and then it was on to the nightly news shows, ABC's "World News" and CBS's "Evening News." His last interview of the day was on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." In his last remarks to McClellan, Olbermann continued his flare for hyperbole. Here's what he said:
OLBERMANN: Scott McClellan, I don't want to get too fulsome on you but I don't think you're going to be dining out on the book for the rest of life. I think this a primary document of American history and I'm very impressed with it. At some point people will be teaching history based on it.

Revised History
May 30, 2008 - 11:20 ET by rammingspeedMr. Olbermann is obsessed with getting Bush to the point where he allows unsubstantiated documents to speak for him. It's really crazy, because Olbermann has great brain power and talent, but he chooses to believe things that aren't true. In this country it makes him silly, but if he or his ilk ever get enough power, they'll hurt people.

May 30, 2008 - 11:38 ET by ChrisMillsRam,
I have to disagree with your characterization of Mr. O. He does not have much brain power. This is the guy who railed out Rudy Giuliani for not stopping planes from flying into the WTC. Last I checked the Mayor of NYC doesn't aquire Superman-like powers. If Keith had brain power he would at least apply basic physical concepts, to hs whacko ideas....

May 30, 2008 - 12:04 ET by fitzfongNo, Olbermann is a very witty, intelligent guy. His problem is that he's never come to terms with the limits of his intelligence. He became a celebrity sports anchor by bringing a certain erudition, sense of humor and timing to a boring highlight show. But he knew he would have to spread his wings beyond ESPN if his appeal was going to reach any farther than the average sports geek. Unfortunately for him, he lacks the historical command and the credibility on subjects beyond sports to appeal to anyone but geeks.

Keith O possess manipulation tactics not great brain power
May 30, 2008 - 12:22 ET by ChrisMillsI still have to respectfully disagree. Knowing how to manipulate and entertain people may be a talent, but it's just a corpus of tactics selected at the proper time. Real brain power is using facts, principles, and structures in creative or reasonable ways to draw conclusions that have a chance of success in the problem you're confronting. When Keith O says Rudy should have stopped the planes, he suggested there was a means Rudy had at his disposal to stop the planes. That's not just crazy, it's stupid. McClellan's book is a bunch of talking points with no credibility, yet Olbie draws the conclusion that it's a seminal document. Again crazy, but also lacking in brain power.
I'll say this: Keith
May 30, 2008 - 13:17 ET by fitzfongI'll say this: Keith Olbermann is a smart and talented man. However, his intellectual incuriosity and resultant hyperbolic bluster suggest he is in way over his head when it comes to matters beyond the frivolous. Like sports.

But to simply dismiss his abilities because you don't like what he's saying is akin to his hostility towards the Bush Administration...completely irrational and pointless. I believe that he is highly partisan and bordering on delusional, but he has more talent than you credit him having.

This leads us to realize that he knows the things he is saying are false. He deliberately purports falsehoods to manipulate public perception. That's not moronic, just evil.
Just a couple years ago, McClellan was a guy who couldn't get the words "good morning" out of his mouth without some hysterical liberal calling him a Bushbot liar. Now, he could claim he personally witnessed our president imbibing the blood of puppies and liberals would lap it up like it was Gospel.

But your point is well made.
These people hated McClellan and he was just a Bush toady no one could trust, now all of sudden he is the most courageous, bold, truth teller out there because he said what everyone wanted to hear.
Of course when people came out against Clinton they were savaged as liars, creatans and tattle-tales.
It's like McClellan and his publisher went on this site and assembled all the talking points repeated endlessly by the left since day 1 and packaged it in a mea culpa by Scott.
Primary document. Sure.
May 30, 2008 - 14:00 ET by krendlerPrimary document. Sure. And Olbermann, according to Countdown's promos, is "This generation's Edward R. Murrow". Not bad for a guy who wasn't even a journalist until a few years ago, unless you consider "sportscaster at ESPN" to involve "journalism". Now we're told by his producers that he's in the same league as Murrow, and I guess Cronkite and Woodward, while pontificating on weighty matters such as History.
MS-NBC is an absolute freak show, and it's getting worse by the week. Matthews seems possessed. He was downright creepy in his interrogation of Ari Fleischer the other night. And then there's Mika Brezinski - A blatant rip-off of Cheri Oteri's Morning Show Dingbat character on Saturday Night Live - playing the part of "serious-yet-perky political reporter". I used to think Soledad O'Brien was the most pointless tv personality ever. Brezinski takes it to a whole new level.
Can't wait to see how things "progress" as November approaches. And if McCain wins, expect to be treated to somber scenes of MS-NBC and NBC talking heads asking each other things like "What IS IT that the American people don't get!!!" (what we heard in 04 when Kerry lost) along with "Sadly, racism still exists in America."

The one and only thing that would be worth McCain winning for me would be the melt down of msnbc....my oh my just thinking of all the talking heads that are on the brink of insanity already would be worth watching, with the exception of Olbie, he is already certifiable, what would be great is watching the doctors in white coats haul him away on air...
What will be sad though is the next election would be starting already within a month...just like they have been doing on the msm since 2000...just the thought of it is almost unbearable.
This nation has become a 352 days, 24/7 non-stop election because of the msm...of course if Obama or Hill wins this won't happen until the normal length of time.

It's always interesting to watch how you absolutely love someone until they come out and say the opposite of what you want to believe or have been told to believe. Then the loved ones are attacked for being stupid for not standing up to the powers that be (as if it were actually possible). Then it's the normal accusations of money grabbing back stabbers who lied to get the position. Whatever you need to get you through the night...pssst...you're being duped by this administration. The President leaked a covert CIA operative's name for political reasons- plain & simple. Before you start attacking me, use the flip side to this argument. What if it were Clinton? Carter? Johnson? May 30, 2008 - 15:51 ET by MrDebaterDid you ever hear of a guy named Armitage??? If you weren't so blinded by Bush derangement syndrome, you would know that Richard Armitage leaked the name of Valerie Plame, and that she was not covert.. know your facts before putting foot in mouth. By the way the prosecutor of the Plaime case was a democrat, that might explain why he kept the case going even after he knew it was Armitage that leaked the name.
Syrius....not very....not very well informed, either
May 30, 2008 - 16:00 ET by spiderdanLet's see...here's your quote: "The President leaked a covert CIA operative's for political purposes -- plain and simple".
This will be no "attack", it will be a gesture of illumination -- for the legitimate Americans out there that continue to see this idiotic premise raised again and again.
Mr. Bush leaked nothing. Fact. Valerie Plame was not a covert operative, ever. Fact. Her identity was known long before her husband's battery of lies were uttered. Fact. Ms. Plame did not serve in a role where the lives of CIA field operatives and their contacts would be compromised if her "cover" was blown. Fact. Ms. Plame was an analyst, not an undercover "spy" behind enemy lines. Fact. The parking attendant at the Langley headquarters has the same right to privacy as Ms. Plame. Fact.
Mr. Bush had no reason to even utter this woman's name -- outside of expressing what a bad case of the trots might have felt like. If left wingers and their liberal enablers are going to insert this garbage into an otherwise legitimate discussion, expect sensible and informed Americans to debunk and deride that effort enthusiastically.
One can acknowledge
May 30, 2008 - 16:07 ET by fitzfongOne can acknowledge someone's abilities without endorsing the misuse of those abilities. But it's obvious that you lack the honesty and/or the intelligence to make that distinction. If you're suggesting that Scott McClellan was ever considered competent by Republicans, you're either lying or totally disengaged. Scott McClellan was always considered a bumbling weak link...the fact that he defecated this "work" clearly says more about him than it does about the workings of the Bush Administration. Either he believed these things all along (and was therefore a coward for not speaking up/quitting at the time) or, more likely, he was an incompetent spokesman who sought vengeance and a whore's payoff after he was properly fired for his general uselessness. And here's a tip, Sparky, don't further embarrass yourself by wading into the Plame "scandal"...you're in over your head. We here at NewsBusters have forgotten more about that "scandal" then you will ever know. Save yourself the trouble and the inevitable humiliation.

Really?
May 30, 2008 - 16:37 ET by jaywlAt first I thought you were being facetious, but nah! You really believe that. Just two things in my attack. One, Richard Armitage, liberal republican at best and no friend to President Bush, leaked Valerie Plame's name then kept it secret while his FRIENDS spent millions for lawyers and had their names dragged through the mud (Semper Fi, jerkass). She was undercover, at that point, only with her lying cheatin' scumbag of a husband. Both of those comments have been verified by a bulldog federal prosecutor, Fitzgerald and the US Congress. Second, your democratic list of Presidents includes only one who probably would not do what you accuse President Bush of doing and that would be Jimmy Carter. He and President Bush are closer ethically than all the other presidents, if you would be honest. As for the others I know how I would react, except for FDR (wasn't born yet). All of them used the IRS, the FBI, and CIA in ways illegal. Read your history books and be honest with yourself.

May 31, 2008 - 10:28 ET by exLibExactly, look at the flipside of the argument.
I was just at CNN.com and the vast majority of comments on the mcclellan story are from lefties like yourself hailing this guy as some saint. His motives and honesty are now assumed to be true because he is validating the left's viewpoints.
As has been shown on this site when ex-Clinton staffers came out against him, or even Linda Tripp, they were savaged by the media as turn-coats, not whistle blowers. Yet Clinton is now being savaged by the media for all the same reasons they defended them in the 90's.
No one believed or trusted mcC when he worked for Bush but now he is the most trusted man in america.
Talk about an incurious press.
Remember, Linda Tripp was the butt of jokes on an entire season of SNL, all which were very mean and spiteful, even though she was proven truthful in a court of law, it didn't matter to the left, only that their hero was exposed.
Scott has said nothing new, and bascially regurgitated the left's talking point for the past 7 years.

NBC Sports....
May 31, 2008 - 00:50 ET by spiderdanI used to love NBC Sports -- more so when they were home of the old AFL/AFC side of NFL coverage. Having two of the best announcers in the game -- Al Michaels and John Madden -- is the only redeeming aspect of that charade these days. However, I will not watch NBC games because of the Olbermann inclusion. That guy is a pure lunatic and since most at that network deem him worthy of our time -- during football coverage -- they forfeit my participation, including my boycott of any sponsors.
I know most sponsors don't "buy" specific programming, but when they (sponsors) learn their revenue potential is hampered by cramming money into the coffers of a brain dead operation (NBC), perhaps they'll take their advertising dollars elsewhere. Regardless, I will not give them the honor or privelege of my time, money, or patience.
I agree spiderman, no NBC Football
May 31, 2008 - 10:23 ET by exLibI have to agree.
The scary part of course is that NBC is attempting to mainstream Olberman and drive people to his show. That's why they give him the Sports slot.
When he does sports he doesn't spout insane poltical stuff and he appears relatively normal. Then they do sports for Countdown and people could be drawn to his show.
To me the fact that Olberman, Franken and the like don't get negative stories reported on them like Rush, Hannity, etc. is the most glaring example of liberal bias.

I'm sure you do. But
May 31, 2008 - 20:17 ET by fitzfongI'm sure you do. But a more honest and accurate way of looking at this situation is to say that Scott McClellan, being an incompetent media whipping boy, decided "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". He had no future, so he cashed in his chips. Period.

Does it?

How does it validate anything, or is their no need for any evidence to substantiate his claims. Of course even though it is the same BS you folks have been peddeling for years without any evidence to back it up, I guess we should'nt be suprised. Your hatred for Bush has blinded you and your party.
