From ‘General’ to ‘Government’ to ‘Gay’ – The G in GM

By Taylor Hughes | June 11, 2012 | 16:44

Taylor Hughes's picture

What do GM and President Obama have in common (besides that fact that he bought it)? They’re both catering to the gay agenda for cash. Soon after President Obama declared that “same sex couples should be allowed to marry,” government-owned GM decided that gays should also be targeted by its ad campaigns.

While Obama’s move paid off immediately (Hollywood had lavished some $12 million on his campaign within days of his announcing that his opinion had “evolved”), the jury is still out on whether it will pay off for Chevy.

An LGBT Detroit based paper, Between the Lines, ran an ad showing the Chevy Volt taking the most important step in a gay person’s life, coming out. Parked between two gas powered Chevy vehicles, the ad shows the Volt boldly proclaiming, “Mom, Dad, I’m Electric.”

This move was hailed as “particular strategic move for the car manufacturer” by the Huffington Post and others, noting that the LGBT community tends to be more “eco-friendly.”

With sales of the Volt struggling, it may be smart for Chevy to take a page from its owner’s playbook.

Oh that's just brilliant, brand a car as 'Gay'. Yeah that'll pump up the sales. Of course I realize no real man would drive a Volt but they have just put the kiss of death on the poor thing by designating it a Gay car.

And, I am not a homophobe, by any means, live and let live, but that spins both ways. We must co-exist, not blot out every trace of every tenet most of us have lived by for more years than homosexuality has been part of the "mainstream".

and is almost pathetic in its blatant attempt to appeal to the gay population. Chevy, and ultimately GM, would do well to save their money rather than flush it on an ill conceived campaign such as this...The Volt is on life support and spending ad money aimed at gays, who are a miniscule percentage of the American public, is a collossal waste of time and money.

80 times the density.

If petroleum didn’t exist, we’d have to invent it. Nothing else comes close to oil when it comes to energy density, ease of handling, flexibility, convenience, cost, or scale. Electric vehicles may be the celebrity car du jour, but modern batteries are only slightly better than the ones that Thomas Edison developed. Gasoline has 80 times the energy density of the best lithium ion batteries.

I can't drive to work with an electic car. (39 miles) I can't go anywhere in winter because I can't run the heater and get where I need to go. I can't go anywhere in summer because I can't run the A/C and get where I need to go. I can't go anywhere and use the radio because I will not get to where I need to go. It can't go anywhere when it is raining because the wipers will drain the battery and I will not get to where I need to go. I can't drive anywhere at night because the lights will drain the battery and I will not get to my destination.

Mom, Dad, I am gay and stupid. Sorry.

I have 8500 miles on my Volt and have used 59 gallons of gasoline, using my heater, a/c, wipers, radio, etc as needed.
My previous car, 33 mpg, would have used 250 gallons.
My car before that, 20mpg SUV, would have used 425 gallons.

It costs between 45 and 65 cents a day to recharge.

Snopes says $1.70. Two teen girls, much brighter than you it looks, say over a dollar a day.

http://nlpc.org/stories/2012/02/24/true-gas-savings-chevy-volt

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vC81JKRUUw

First, it is important to recognize that true operating cost consists of depreciation, insurance and maintenance as well as energy consumption. The high cost of the Volt puts it at an immediate disadvantage to conventionally powered vehicles. Even after federal and state tax giveaways, the vehicle costs about $15,000 more than comparable gas-powered cars. It is unlikely that the car will hold much of its value considering that improvements should be made in alternate vehicle technology (thus making the Volt obsolete within years) and the battery is expected to begin depleting well before year 8. Current cost estimates for battery replacement are about $8,000. The battery has an 8 year / 100,000 mile warranty so General Motors may be incurring the costs to replace batteries as owners approach year 8.

Nothing to brag about, especially undercutting the actual charge amout by half or more. $8000 after 8 years. Up yours bragster. My 98 Ranger, almost 14 still on the same engine and drive train after 300,000 miles. Not even near $8000 to replace nothing on it.

You alway this braggy for nothing?

8 years

Submitted by bibes1949 on Wed, 06/13/2012 - 4:02pm.

In 8 years my Volt will have about 100,000 miles on it.
I will have saved about $8,000.00 in gasoline costs.
My electric motor, however, will only have run for about 25,000 miles( I run on it about 25% of the time), should have plenty of miles left on it, and I get 40mpg when running on that.
If I have only half the range then on battery as I do now, that will still be more than the Prius plug-in gets when brand new.

cost to recharge

Submitted by bibes1949 on Wed, 06/13/2012 - 4:30pm.

Cost to recharge depends on electricity costs.
You can verify at the Consumers Energy of Michigan web site that their rate to recharge a car during the night is 6 cents/kwh
the Volt has a 16 kw battery of which 10.3 kw is available for driving
10.3kw times 6 cents/kwh=about 65 cents if fully discharged.
To go 25.6 miles to and from work, I use about 7kw, which is about 45 cents.
In the Winter I use 9-10kw going to work, so it's 55-60 cents

My Volt has it's own electric line and meter. Recharging every day in April cost me $18. How far can you go in your car on $18?

During that time, I had filled the gas tank, 9.5 gallons, on March 20 and put no gas in it again until April 28 and still had 2.5 gallons left.

I like my Volt!

Bush! Bush! Bush! Bush! 3 years later, still Bush's fault!

Shut up troll.

And yes, you were bragging. As noted in my link above, the car is overpriced, will likely hold little value, and faces a major expenditure for battery replacement every 8 years.

And in fact, if the braggart troll had bothered to look at the linked article, there is much more.

There are lots of other comments made by those who claim to own Volts who say they are saving so much money. I don't know what their motivations are, but anyone who wants to save $2 a day by spending an extra $15,000 does not have a very keen sense for investing.

Some commentators on the right have made misrepresentations as well, such as the Volt running out of charge in a tunnel, as if this caused the vehicle to be stuck. While this is not fair, the majority of reporting on the Volt by the mainstream media has been overwhelmingly positive with false claims of popularity and technological wonder regarding the car. How technologically advanced is a car that has a power source that takes 12 hours to charge only to have the capacity of one gallon of gas? And why are taxpayers footing the bill?

Yeah, 12 hours charge just to give you the equivalent of 1 gallon of gas. Marvelz! Teknomarvulz! Enginerroteknomarvulz! Eleventy!!!11@12!

Pack sand braggart troll that now claims he is not bragging. Yes little braggart troll, we believe you now. You was not bragging at allz. We is so wrong to call you that. Iz feel bad all us.

"Why not sell to everyone??"

Not everyone wants to buy them. They could, however, sell them to anyone, if anyone wants to buy them. That's what capitalistic companies do. The should, however, refuse the government subsidies, for that's not very capitalist. It is, however, quite monopolistic. So, they really aren't a "a good capitalist company." They are, however, becoming more and more adept at being a government owned, controlled, and subsidized monopoly, which is exactly what they are!

Thanks to the fact that the federal government owns and controls a majority share of the stock, which gives them control over the Board, which gives them control over the entire company, no one, no individual, no corporation, no cooperative, can buy them out and take control. There is no civilian control. They are owned, and controlled by the federal government, which makes them a monopoly, a FEDERAL MONOPOLY. So, go ahead and buy all your cars from that federal monopoly, if that is what you wish, but don't you DARE to try describe that monopoly as "a good capitalist company." They are as far from being "a good capitalist company" as you can possibly get!
