Shirts, hats, and flags bearing the likeness of the Central and South American Communist assassin have adorned the bodies, heads and campaign offices of some of the world's finest mindless.
So it was with joyous exhuberence that I came upon the current issue of Mad Magazine whilst strolling through the grocer's this afternoon.
For the cover art alone (below), it was indeed an absolute must purchase.

How can any of us not LOVE this rendering, with the accompanying sub-head "Viva La Stupidity"?
Is Mad Mag perhaps more properly commemerating the end of El Presidente's forty-nine year run than any of the "real", "serious" news outlets?
Or are they simply poking fun at one of the greatest of our pop culture atrocities.
If it is either, or both, or even neither, it is simply fantastic.

It's one of life's mysteries
February 28, 2008 - 19:57 ET by Chris NormanIt's one of life's mysteries that wearing a tee shirt picturing Al Pacino as the murderous thug, Scarface is considered declasse, while wearing one with the murderous thug, Che is considered chic and (possibly) intellectual.

That is priceless. I have said before, that these idiots who worship him have no clue what Che Guevara did. They just think he was a 60's kind of radical, which makes him cool.
They don't want to know the truth of what he was, and did. Che was cool!! He was a revolutionary, dude! He stuck it to the MAN!!! That's all they think. So they idolize him.
They are idiots.
Viva la stupidity, indeed.

February 29, 2008 - 11:23 ET by pbanks7Yeah, one of my coworkers has a Che T-shirt. I gave him info on what a murderous thug Che was, and the response was, "Well, at least he tried to DO something," or something similar. Viva los estupidos.

Gee, I wonder if they did the inside back cover with an image of Fidel that folds in to make an image of Satan? (Or was it the outside of the back cover? It has been a few years since I have picked up a copy of Mad. I will get one of these.)
I also wonder if Mad will make any t-shirts with the cover image?

Wasn't the author of the venerable "Spy vs. Spy" a hardcore anti-communist whose political cartoons slapping around communist officials were what got him into trouble and got him to come to America in the best traditions of immigration? There might be a few other graphical satirists in MAD that might hail from similar repressive backgrounds and came to America to be allowed their creative genius.

The real question in my mind is how a myth like this starts. Obviously the mass media play their part in this, but in the end, I suppose it takes money and desire from certain people to make it so powerful a story that the media takes notice. I mean, we don't see t-shirts of Timothy McVeigh or David Koresh being sold in stores, and they got plenty of media coverage. The question to ask is who benefits from glorifying Che Guevara.

February 29, 2008 - 01:09 ET by ArcherBWhen I see someone with a Che shirt on it, I ask them what they think about Guantanimo. Of course, they think those poor, prisoners at Guantanimo were just innocent peasants picked up for oil or something. I ask them if they deserver a trial, and of course they say yes. Then I tell them about my sig. They usually have no response.
