Chris Matthews Slams 'Older White People' for Still Having a 'Problem' With Obama

By Scott Whitlock | January 17, 2011 | 15:55

Appearing on MSNBC, Monday, to promote his new special on Barack Obama, Chris Matthews attacked "older white people" for still holding bigoted feelings against the first African American President.

Lavishing praise on younger Americans, he added, "And I think that's a generalization and I'll stick with it. I think younger people do not see race as an obstacle." He then touted the "non-judgmental" attitude of Obama voters, fawning, "In fact, they say [race is] irrelevant and don't even notice it, whereas older people notice it all the time."

If "older white people" are focused on race, Matthews could certainly be one of them. On January 27, 2010, after Obama's State of the Union address, he oddly alerted, "You know, I forgot he was black tonight for an hour...I was watching, I said, 'Wait a minute. He's an African-American guy in front of a bunch of other white people, and there he is, President of the United States, and we've completely forgotten that tonight.'"

[See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Matthews appeared, Monday, to promote Obama's America, a special edition of Hardball airing at 7pm on January 17. It will look at how the President has handled the first two years of his presidency. Matthews broached the subject with Jansing by complaining, "I think older Americans, older white people still have a problem with this guy."

A transcript of the exchange, which occurred at 11:44am EST, follows:

CHRIS JANSING: How about President Obama?

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, it's two years and tonight we're honoring that as well as the Martin Luther King Day and it's sort of an interesting overlay, the two of them. The first African-American president, no matter what we say, it's non-ethnic, non-racial about the President, I think that's appropriate 90 percent of the time, it is historically important and it will be marked I think by a lot of people in history books that he is the first African-American president and how well he did. You know, my own view, the American people are very proud of this country, and it's the thing we don't talk about usually in politics. How proud we are of this country and we know when we think about it we're a great country. We're not a little country. We're a great country and we want to have great presidents. You're not happy to have a string of second-rate presidents, we like to have great ones. And maybe that's one of the things we don't talk about that's going in the favor of this president. We had Reagan who, whatever you think of his politics, came off in the history books, he will, I think, go down as one of our great president. And Jack Kennedy, no matter how short will go down in our history books. And, certainly Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. We've had great presidents and some who have not made it politically. And I think the American people on average when they're in a good mood, which they often are, want our presidents succeed, want our presidents to succeed, no matter their politics.

JANSING: Let me play a clip from tonight's program. Then we'll talk a little more.

MATTHEWS: Okay.

UNIDENTIFIED: After the election, I think because some of the hard slogging and the politics, he didn't become that inspirational personality. Ronald Reagan in his first two years, he had more unemployment, he didn't have a financial crisis, but Reagan was able to keep up that inspiration.

DAVID ABERSHIRE (Ctr. For Study of Presidency and Congress): And he is finding his middle ground. Congress, congressional leaders, Republican leaders, to meet him on that common ground, he may get something done.

JANSING: You know, to that point-

MATTHEWS: Did you see the age difference there?

JANSING: What would you say it is?

MATTHEWS: It means- it's significant. I think older Americans, older white people still have a problem with this guy.

JANSING: Yeah.

MATTHEWS: And I think that's a generalization and I'll stick with it. I think younger people do not see race as an obstacle. I don't think- I think, they're much more non-judgmental. In fact, about ethnicity, they just say that's not relevant- In fact, they say it's irrelevant and don't even notice it, whereas older people notice it all the time.

All us "older white people' understand the dangers of communism.

obammies mommie was a communist, the sperm donor daddy was a communist, his mommies parents were communists, all his childhood was spent in the company of communists.

His entire life has been surrounded with communists, marxists, and a wide assortment of other people that strongly desire to destroy The United States of America.

Only the media is too stupid to pick up on those little details.

Ditto on the 30-second timing, if not quicker. And I also have a US passport.

Back when I was born the hospital presented new mothers with a booklet they prepared with guidlines for caring for the newborn. It was just several pages stapled together with the original BC as the cover. After my parents died I found mine in a box in their garage and it now is tucked safely away in my filing cabinet, along with a certified copy of my BC from my state's Health Department, the copy I needed to obtain the passport.

Apparently Chris "Hissy Fit" Matthews can't distinguish between those two types of "wisdom".

As far as "older white people" goes, we are the majority and the majority of 'us' oppose his agenda. But, by phrasing it that way, it does two things: it implies we are racist while still giving Hissy weasel room to say "I never said they were racists", and secondly, it puts some people on the defensive (I'm not one).

No noticing of race from them, of course, they are color-blind, it is the red-neck mass electorate that can't get over it. Sure!

With that being said, I, as an 'older white person', do have a problem with Obama and his policies. But my problem is with his 'white' half. Does that make me a self hating white man? Or reverse racist?

As for younger people liking Obama more; perhaps it is the cradle to grave nanny state he seeks to implement on America that they are actually in favor of. I venture to suggest that regardless of who the president was, if he promised to provide you with all you'd need to survive, without seeking anything in return, they would be right on board with that. I read over the report these people were put out and it looks like fairly biased research.  I think they knew what they wanted and by golly they found it.

I don't disagree with everything they said.  For instance the idea that older people tend to say whats on their mind and not care too much what other people think is obvious to anyone who has dealt with elderly parents.  But this is not something unique to white people, just old people.

But most of the 'research' as presented in the report was loaded to come up with the correct answers.  It didn't prove prejudice only that prejudiced results can be produced.

Maybe his first gay

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 6:29pm.

Maybe his first gay experience was with a black man. You know what they say about, " Once You Try Black, You Never Go Back ", apparently has real meaning in his sick mind and cult like obsession for the Ass Clown.

He's even got an MSNBC special devoted to the one he loves and has apparently devoted his life and what's left of his career to.

Fittingly he has entitle it " Obama's America ", which tells one all you need to know regarding the life of the narcissist living in our White House and just  how OK with that statement are his sycophant followers today.

With Barack it's ' ask what this country can do for him....not what he can do for this country '.

Matthews has his own problems.

Submitted by va5thdistrict on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 6:24pm.

Matthews is so full of it.  How could we have elected a black president if many of the older white people have subdued prejudice? The people who disagree with Obama do so because of his politics not his race. On the other hand Matthews seems to hate anyone with whom he disagrees.

I have run across too many links to this to avoid replying to it any longer.

Mathews needs to know that some of us are NOT bigots, we hate ALL communists equally.

I'm one of those " older white people " and, yes, I have a problem with obama. I don't like that he's a traitor, bigot, liar, fraud and criminal. Other than that, I'm sure he's a fine fellow. I have a problem with anyone that's trying to bring America down.

That's a peek into Chris' obsessions with race.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 8:58pm.

He comes from that notoriously self-righteous liberal cadre that believes in labeling people based solely on demographics.  I guess being a middle-aged Latino, I am supposed to be liberal, vote Democratic and always complain about being a victim.  Funny how I was raised to do none of that.

The Liberal Meme

Submitted by pbthinker on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 10:34pm.

I used to think it was a liberal meme, but now I believe it's a Matthews meme.  He's constantly mentioning race, in one form or another, and saying that Republicans don't know how to deal with blacks.

My belief has always been that Republicans can't understand blacks because they've always treated them fairly and have had policies that would allow them to move up in society.  Now they haven't had policies designed to keep them on the plantation, but that's not going to improve their lives.  As a consequence, the race pimps and those who depend on divisions between blacks and anyone that would move them up, are constantly trying to make race an issue, even when it's not.  The Jesse Jacksons and Al SHarptons of this world depend to racial strife for their money.

I'm anxious to see how more black Republicans are going to change some of the dynamics.  I'm sure the race pimps are going to try and marginalize them but, luckily, they've forced the CBO to deal with them and they can be members of the CBO.  Just imagine a CBO with different voices in the conference!!!!

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

Wait. Matthews is doing a "special" Hardball show on Obama? Isn't every last freakin' show of his already on Obama? What makes this one "special" - does Matthews tape it with his shirt off?

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"
