Sneering MSNBC Slams GOP Candidates as 'American Freak Show'

By Scott Whitlock | October 18, 2010 | 12:42

Scott Whitlock's picture

Sometimes the bias is extremely clear: A MSNBC graphic on Monday mocked GOP senatorial candidates with the headline, "American Freakshow [sic] Angle, Paul, O'Donnell: New Faces in Politics." American Freak Show is also the title of guest Willie Geist's new book on politics, but all the apparent "freaks" discussed in the piece were Republicans.

Geist complained to Jansing and Co. host Chris Jansing, "The frustration about this is, you have to hand in a book so early that all these people have come out of nowhere. They sprout up like weeds. Christine O'Donnell, Rand Paul, Linda McMahon." [MP3 audio here. Click on article for video.]

Considering that South Carolina's Democratic candidate for Senate is under a felony porn indictment, one would think Alvin Greene would be included in the "freak show" discussion.

Instead, Geist described the California gubernatorial race, in which the Democratic campaign called the female Republican a whore, this way: "The California race where the entire debate last week was over the word whore." Are both sides to blame here? Is this somehow Meg Whitman's fault?

A transcript of the October 18 segment, which aired at 10:54am EDT, follows:

MSNBC GRAPHIC: American Freak Show: Angle, Paul, O'Donnell: New Faces in Politics

CHRIS JANSING: Christine O'Donnell and witchcraft, Ron Paul's son, Rand Paul, you know, are talking about aqua whatever.

WILLIE GEIST: Aqua Buddha.

JANSING: Aqua Buddha.

GEIST: Ever try the Aqua Buddha? [Makes a pot smoking gesture.]

JANSING: Me?

GEIST: I've heard.

JANSING: Don't you wish you could update this book daily? That's what I want to know.

GEIST: That' what I keep saying. The frustration about this is, you have to hand in a book so early that all these people have come out of nowhere. They sprout up like weeds. Christine O'Donnell, Rand Paul, Linda McMahon. The California race where the entire debate last week was over the word whore. These were the people who deserved to be included in the book and they're going to be in the next edition.

JANSING: You know, the other question that I have for you, and it's not really so much a question as just take off if you'd like to. [Starts laughing.] Someone at our meeting this morning said, "It's the campaign silly season." And I said, I've been through silly seasons this needs a new name. It's so far beyond that.

GEIST: Yes.

JANSING: I mean, we could call it freak show, but it's already the name of a best-selling book.

GEIST: And another friend of mine said, "Congratulations on the book. But, why would I read the book when I can just turn on cable TV and watch something that is reality and much better than that?" That's not true of course, you should still buy the book.

JANSING: Did you think of putting a DVD here?

GEIST: We should put a DVD. That's a great idea.

JANSING: Yeah.

GEIST: But, it is a little odd when you have a campaign season in which a serious candidate for Senate, filling the Vice President's Senate seat, looks to camera and says, "I am not a witch." And there's no sense of irony or anything there.

JANSING: There isn't?

GEIST: That's an odd season. I mean, she means it. She wants to let the voters know in no uncertain terms that she's not a witch. I haven't seen that before.

Chris Jansing is a very fair

Submitted by FAR52 on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 12:55pm.

Chris Jansing is a very fair and balanced reporter.  Bringing her in to do 2 hours a day was a good move on MSNBC's part.  As for Willie's comments, if we can't laugh at ourselves, then what's the point?  I mean, we do have a pretty unique cast of characters running for Senate this season.  Some will win, some will lose.  But let's not fool ourselves into thinking that a little mockery or fun at their expense isn't warranted.

Calling them a "unique cast

Calling them a "unique cast of characters" is quite different from labeling them a "freak show."

Maybe the reason these things

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 12:55pm.

Maybe the reason these things are new is because only now are the Democrats desperate enough to include "whore" and "witch" in their campaign strategies. MSNBC put up headline that said
"American Freak Show: Angle, Paul, O'Donnell: New Faces in Politics." ????? I'm speechless.

Blonde, you got that right. McCasgill kept calling herself a 'centrist'. I could not belive that! The woman is a liberal through and through. I told my wife, if she is a centrist, the dems have moved all the way to the marxist left. And calling constitutionalists 'right wing extremists' was a hoot! I guess she would use the same expression to describe Jefferson, Adams and Washington.

I love living in Missouri,

Submitted by Ruths husband Ben on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 4:39pm.

I love living in Missouri, but Claire is one of the worst disasters in Missouri election history.  When they were preparing to override the will of the people and cram socialistic health care down our throats she had her office phones turned off.  I sent her an email and she replied that she knew better than me what I wanted.  I will work and donate to the limit of my ability to see that she is not re-elected when her term comes up.

Willie Geist

Submitted by Texndoc on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 2:31pm.

Back off Willie Geist, he has a bit of Tucker Carlson still in him.  I'm up early enough to watch his pre-Morning Joe show and he will present a story for example: "The Democrats continue to acuse the Republicans, without citing any proof, of....."    He is one of the only ones on MSNBC who has not drank the kool-aid.  He might get bashed up a bit when Bigmouth Scarborough and Mika the idiot arrive, but that is a Sharron Angle voter I know it.   If MSNBC has any brains they'd get Willie in Special Ed's spot.

Texndoc...

I watch his early show a lot of times, I agree with your sentiments, he usually doesn't say all that much when the MJ show is on, I've always felt if he could be his real self, he would say a lot they just wouldn't like, he knows, they know it, the thing that bothers me is he should look for work on Fox or something, because slowly but surely he will sell his soul too the longer he stays at the Funny Farm...I don't want to see him 'Lean Forward' too as Scarborough has done years back now...time will tell.

I supposed it was inevitable that they would overplay their hand eventually so that America could see their real agenda, but this is more than one could have hoped for. After the election I'm going to send Barry a thank-you note for his  part in revealing the REAL agenda.

Well, freakier than they already are on the evening of Kickass November 2nd!

It will be Post Election Traumatic Syndrome all over again just as it was is 2004.

I can't wait to see the ashen faces of freaks and zombies like Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman, and the "perky" Katie as they watch the dumbocrat Congress and the Senate (hopefully) crumble before their eyes.

And in less than 24 hours Odumbo will blame the American people for being stupid and accuse George Bush and the republicans of lying to us.
