According to the media website TV Week, "most TV news operations" deemed Arnold Schwarzenegger's grabbing of "Good Morning America" reporter Claire Shipman's hands during an interview to be "inappropriate." The exchange, which was first reported last Wednesday on NewsBusters, occurred after Shipman repeatedly tried to get the California governor to admit that some efforts to combat the state's wildfires were going poorly. At that point, the former actor seized the journalist's hands and proclaimed, "...You're looking for a mistake and you won't find it because it's all good news, as much as you maybe hate it, but it's good news." Apparently, Shipman found Schwarzenegger's actions "bizarre and amusing."
According to TV Week, the physical touching amounted to applying "force to a female reporter" and an attempt to "muscle" her. TV Week's Michele Greppi cited the MRC for highlighting the story: "The Media Research Center, founded by Brent Bozell to wage a war against liberal bias in journalism, posted a transcript of the interview....The headline was 'Arnold Grabs ABC’s Shipman, Demands: Stop Spinning Fire Coverage.'" TV Week also explained how the elite media reacted to the governor's grabbing. Greppi wrote, "At most TV news operations, the Schwarzenegger move was regarded as inappropriate on his part and smoothly handled on hers."
As the MRC's Tim Graham noted, CNN's Howard Kurtz wondered if Schwarzanegger's actions were sexist.

October 29, 2007 - 11:32 ET by Cool ArrowI'm sure in the absence of mass begging from the wildfire refugees, the MSM will settle for making a big deal out of this.
And here I thought I was equal to men!
October 29, 2007 - 15:25 ET by PamI thought I was equal to men, but I guess not. I guess I am supposed to just pretend to be an equal until I get my feelings hurt. Then I should go all girly on men.
pfft! If she wants to play with the big boys, she out to start acting professional. It was totally inappropriate for her to be conducting the interview the way she did. She asked a question, but never listened to a word the man said. She had her agenda, and come hell or fire, she was going to tell her story. Why was she interviewing him?
They're right
October 29, 2007 - 11:41 ET by tenthreeleaderIt was inappropriate. There's no need for an interviewee to make physical contact with an interviewer unless it's to shake hands when the interview is done.
If R-nulled was so upset about the line of questioning he should have simply ended the interview.
That said, the drive-bys now have something else to rail about regarding a high-profile R. And I am sure they will.

October 29, 2007 - 11:48 ET by JimboBull. Simply "ending the interview" would have been spun into a coverup and even more paralells drawn to Katrina. This kind of biased reporting needs to be taken head on, exactly as Arnold did.
LOL - you post is comical. "Thank you for the interview and drawing unfair comparisons to Katrina to advance you liberal agenda. [Shakes hands]. You have a wonderful day!
His comments were completely civilized and in a conversational tone.
He did nothing wrong. Since the liberal media couldn't pin him down and compare his state to LA, they attack him for being "sexist". Why should anyone be surprised?

upthread
October 29, 2007 - 13:22 ET by tenthreeleaderYou may want to re-read what I posted. My post may have been "comical" to you but it was also reflective of a professional attitude. I've got 25 years in media work talking here.
I did not say that he should have shook hands with Shipman. I did say I consider it the only acceptable form of physical contact between interviewer and interviewee. If I didn't like the question and I were Arnold I'd have left. Fairly simple.
Riddle me this: what happened when George HWB called out Dan Rather on the air? Was it positive for him in the long run, or negative? Ending an interview is a perfectly acceptable way to register anger with the media, and it doesn't cause you trouble that has already been mentioned up-thread.
Bull? Hardly.

October 29, 2007 - 13:29 ET by Cool ArrowThis comes very close to the technical definition of assault. Arnold did leave himself open to criticism.
It's obvious he handled the Wildfires correctly, and understandable he was exasperated by this reporter's badgering, but all the MSM needs is this diversion to create a whole 'nother story.

Interesting how your 25 years in media work hasn't lead you to question the motive of the question she posed.

Stop being a wuss
October 29, 2007 - 15:18 ET by Six String Spifflook, this BS has been going on for far too long. There was NOTHING wrong with what Arnold did. It is evident that you have been wussified during your tenure as a journalist. This is EXACTLY the kind of attitude that will flush the country (what's left of it anyway) down the crapper. People like YOU who don't want to do anything potentially offensive. If Arnold had left, that would have left the door WIIIIDE open for these scumbags to smear and claim failure. I like his attitude of stomping on them. It's about damn time. There is too much of this "take the high ground" crap. Screw that. Take the facts and make them choke. These sensationalists are ruining this great country. Feel first. Maybe think afterwards.
"I don't give DAMN what you think you're entitled too."
Arnold will not suffer
October 30, 2007 - 01:45 ET by maggieqpublicArnold will not suffer because of the hand grab. But in a lot of American cities at a lot of American corporations an employee would be fired or placed on probation for laying hands on a co-worker. I wouldn’t try out this technique at work fellas. The Terminator is coated with a bit of Teflon, but the average American worker is not. The workplace is a minefield…
Situations determine acceptability
October 29, 2007 - 15:34 ET by Jerry MackIn this situation I believe Arnolds behavior was acceptable. He is the Governor of a state during one of the biggest disasters in its history. It was obvious that he was in charge and doing everything that he could do to maximize relief and fire fighting capabilities. The purpose of the reporters question was obvious. Find some negative to bash the Governor and the efforts being made to control the disaster. He did not need a media distraction to remove his focus and the nations from the ongoing disaster.

October 29, 2007 - 14:45 ET by DRM 23Arnold may have grabbed her hand, because if he had grabbed her around the throat he would get in trouble. He may have done it just to get her to stop talking, so he could make a point.

This whole incident amounts to pissy nit-picking from liberal "journihlists" (Am aware of mis-spelling, cute huh?)

Information Management
October 29, 2007 - 12:47 ET by deerjerkydaveI'm a long time watcher and reader of the news. Big Media journalists don't want raw information coming from interviewees. The entire course of an interview consists of leading premises and questions all designed to produce the story intended by the journalist.
It's always awesome when an interviewee breaks from the mold because it throws the journalist for a loop. In this instance Arnold was not telling Shipman what she wanted to hear and she kept hounding him to say what she wanted him to say until he had to tell her in a kind but forceful way that she is wrong.
Of course the public doesn't care, they think of journalists to be as slimy as lawyers. Only big media journalists will complain about Arnold's "attack" on Shipman.
IMO he didn't go far enough.
October 29, 2007 - 12:31 ET by midnight cowboyIMO he didn't go far enough. Ahnold should have thrown a nice right cross against that nattering nabob's lower jaw and put an end to the interview. Let's see if she would try to put word's in a former Mr. Universe's mouth again.

October 29, 2007 - 12:39 ET by maggieqpublicHaven’t heard the usual MSM ally, the Democrats, weigh in on this one. The MSM and the Dems went after Arnold and his apparent history of groping the week before ballots were cast in the Recall Election…. remarkably, the public sided with the Republican candidate back then. The MSM is waiting for the Dems to join them and go public over this current “outrage”….
I wonder if had he NOT
October 29, 2007 - 12:47 ET by scottbhI wonder if had he NOT grabbed her hand, would we still be hearing about this? In reality, the liberal media is shooting themselves in the foot on this. I have several friends (yes, even some liberals), who have mentioned the interview in a positive light, and not ONE has said a thing about the "sexist" hand grabbing being inappropriate. I think this should stay in the news as long as possible so as to continue to demonstrate the idiocy of the very media reporting it.
Reflecting on the events,
October 29, 2007 - 12:57 ET by KC MulvilleReflecting on the events, the most obvious conclusion is that the initial media reports were all wrong. This wasn’t about global warming, nor was it about missing National Guard troops over in Iraq. The smart and responsible people waited until the story developed and the facts came in before they formed conclusions. However, the hyperventilating reporters who were first on the scene were thirsty for quotes, so they interviewed whoever was willing to talk. Jumping to conclusions was what the reporters were hoping for. Naturally, the irresponsible politicians (namely, Barbara Boxer) rushed to the microphone to blame Bush, and the media ate it up.
Any conscientious reflection on the media here would start by acknowledging that immediate reports are always wrong. Why? Why don’t they examine that, and how to adjust to it? (Answer: because they know that fixing the problem would require them to challenge their own assumptions. That’s a non-starter with the professional media.) Every flaw of the media shows up in a story like this, but in their analysis, what do the media focus on? Whether Arnold Schwarzenegger touched a reporter!
TV shows and 'media columns' that claim to analyze media behavior are not designed to challenge the media, but to blunt criticism of it. They're just lightning rods. After all, these shows all have reporters sitting in judgment of reporters. Their motives are too mixed to trust.

October 29, 2007 - 13:15 ET by oldArmyI think this issue they have with the holding hands is only to misdirect the very valid point Gov. Schwarzanegger made. How dare he imply the MSM was trying to dig for more Anti Bush/Pro victims and in doing so. Put the "reporter" on the spot with cold reality. She was clearly stunned by his comments.
Let me throw this out
October 29, 2007 - 13:24 ET by Senior ChiefLet me throw this out there...Did Clinton poke some of Wallace's body parts (I saw this on TeeVee), when he was interviewed on FOX few months ago? Did some leftoids (Baldwin, DeVito and Hillary. I saw this too on clips too!) had a touchy-feely moments on "The View"? Just asking. And if my comments were true, why there was no commotion? Hmmmn. So, was Lewinski interviewing Billy hands-free? I forgot, it was hands-free microphone...
The Governator did his usual role as a leader. At least, he didn't call Shipman "girly".

microphone grab
October 29, 2007 - 15:24 ET by soosanArnold was right to grab the mike, her hand was not an issue. In my experience a reporter will pull a mike away when they don't like an answer they are receiving - they pull it away and ask a new question before you can finish a statement and then they thrust the mike back in your face. The Governator was simply insisting on fair play.
They can get in your face and challenge you but it breaks a rule if you insist on making a point?
You go Arnold.
From a female perspective...
October 29, 2007 - 18:33 ET by american-americanI don't find the hand grab at all inappropriate. The hand was holding the microphone. He grabbed the mic. It was a show of strength, control, or dominance over the interview. Presenting the facts, instead of allowing her to spew politically charged misrepresentations over the airwaves. I respect him for that.
If they keep parroting this exchange as inappropriate, they will continue to remind their viewers of how they (the media) were trying to mark the response to the disaster as insufficient, when in fact, it was handled very well. It will be good for someone, but not for them.

October 30, 2007 - 10:21 ET by HyperboleArnolds "grab" doesn't seem any more inappropriate than the question.
Did we all miss??
October 30, 2007 - 14:23 ET by JohnMThere's another level of distortion that nobody's mentioned: the assertion by this guy Greppi that "At most TV news operations..."
OK, so where are the numbers? HOW MANY news operations were asked? Well, let's see - how may news operations are there? And MOST said that they regarded the action in the exact same way?
Who were they? Tell us who said so.
How was the question asked????? ("If you agree with my premise, then don't answer the phone." <click> "OK, Joe, we just got another one!")
So not only was there an attempt at distortion when Shipman was doing the interview, there was another when Greppi "reported" it!
