Champion still hasn’t gotten over Gore’s 2006 movie and explained, “It’s the movie where he stood beside this giant graphic and rose on a scissor lift … [he] showed you how our rapid rise in fossil fuels would just go off the charts in greenhouse gases,” he reminisced. But the good times aren’t over, according to Champion. “Well there’s a whole new way to count this and what it will do to our planet if we don’t make some substantial changes.”
Yes, we’ve come a long ways since Gore stood beside a graph three years ago. The electronic Carbon Counter is placed on 33rd Street and 7th Avenue in New York City, but you can download it to your computer. Above the numbers it reads: “Climate Change Affects Everyone.”
The Carbon Counter measures the metric amount of twenty-four different gases that human activity releases into the atmosphere. At the outset of Champion’s segment the Carbon Counter measured at 3,642,039,883 metric tons of gases, and the numbers quickly went up.
Champion gave no explanation for how the Carbon Counter was counting the gases released, but assured viewers that that the Counter’s numbers would keep growing and by the end of the century the earth’s temperatures may rise between 2 to 11 degrees if humans don’t “make some changes.”
What changes? “As we change the way we burn fossil fuels it will hopefully change the affects on global warming on the planet.” That’s very reassuring. Of course, Champion didn’t site any science. But why should he with the Carbon Counter in place?
Champion did eventually get to the weather after plugging the Carbon Counter, but he began the segment by stating, “We’re going to talk about the storms that are roaring through the middle of the country again today. But first a little something different.” A little different? Champion apparently forgot two days ago he warned people to think twice about retiring to Florida because of global warming.
And even that wasn’t different from his usual reporting. In 2008, he spent eight minutes plugging the Aspen Institute’s environmental conference. In 2007 he raved about environmentalists who went without toilet paper. That same year he also questioned if one billion people were going to die from global warming.
You could die of global warming just waiting for Champion to get to the weather report.

June 18, 2009 - 10:52 ET by fitzfongYou know what those busy commuters exiting Penn Station really need? How about another confrontational eco-Marxist publicity stunt to remind them what greedy wastes of space they are? Sam Champion is 3,642,039,883 metric tons of gas...and counting.

The Key Figure: 1,767,250mmt/ºC
June 18, 2009 - 14:20 ET by Wildcatter1980According to this post at World Climate Report, it takes 1,767,250 million metric tons of CO2 to raise the average temperature 1 deg C. Or, as they show in the post:
For a more valuable perspective, in this post, the deceptively-named Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act may only yield "global temperature savings on the order of one or two tenths of a degree by the end of the century even if the rest of the developed world does the same—values that are virtually meaningless when held against the total projected temperature rise."
So, Mr. Champion, why are you not reporting these figures to your viewing audience? Could it be that you do not want to risk your audience realizing that this hysteria is being used to bring about more government control over the the individual, our most oppressed minority?
I thought so.

Waxman has another problem.
June 18, 2009 - 16:52 ET by danboWaxman has another problem. If I read you correctly, they're projecting (predicting) an increase of 1.58deg C from 1990-2050.
Almost 20 years or a third of that time is in the record book.
I just ran the 12 month mean for that period using UAH over at Wood for Trees. Looks like we went from about +.07 to about a +.12. That's only an increase of .05 deg.
Even if we're generous and took the monthly numbers. Looks like Jan. 90 was a cool month at about a -.15. It went to about a +.05 last month. That's still only a .2 deg.
Unless we get a lot of warming in the next 30 years. Looks like Waxman and his "science" are busted.

All Pain, No Gain
June 19, 2009 - 11:13 ET by Wildcatter1980The point is that the cap & tax, er, trade is like using a teaspoon to bail out a sinking ship--assuming, of course, the ship is really sinking. For the "average Joe", you, me and the rest of us, we would be saddled with higher cost energy and goods with the attendant lowering of our standard of living and loss of economic freedom while the government grows bigger and more costly and likely exercises more power and control over us.

June 19, 2009 - 14:02 ET by danboGranted, your point was the cap N trade which even by their own projections is useless. But the data you pointed to also indiucates that his reason for the thing in the first place isn't happening.
Waxman has two problems. He has a usless program (expensive), and for a reason that 1/3 the way through his time period, isn't happening.
Mother nature is causing a bigger variance from his projections than his useless program. And it's free.

Good one!
Speaking of the weather report, humans have spent trillions to get the weather right, yet it is rarely accurate for more than a couple of hours into the future.
Nevertheless, less than the majority in the US and apparently shrinking in numbers all the time are buying into these "studies" of the dire consequences of "global warming."
It is just nonsense. The cap and trade bill(s) before our congress and championed by the first stupid liberal, bambi, will hurt our economy and make us less competitive with other countries that have no intention of implementing this crap.
We have surrendered whole industries to foreign competitors in the past. Now, we are busy doing the same, but to our own government.

June 19, 2009 - 14:40 ET by hydrodynDMjdhawk,
I'll make the same basic comment I made about this in another thread on AGW.
The Earth's atmosphere is a chaotic system. Here, I'm using "chaotic" in the scientific sense. Without getting into details, it's essentially impossible to predict, in detail, the future state of a chaotic system past a certain point in time.
And weather predictions are just that - detailed local predictions about the atmosphere.
You can, however, generally make predictions about large scale and long term global properties of chaotic systems. So studies of the long term and global properties of the Earth's atmosphere can be done.

June 18, 2009 - 12:58 ET by i was just thinkingthat we haven't heard much from the Prophet of Doom (aka Algore) lately? I guessing that it's because of 1 of 2 things:
1. He knows his junk science is falling apart under scrutiny, but doesn't care because he's made his millions already.
2. He has his minions (Congress, the President) to do his bidding for him. He doesn't have to say or do anything because he's got them all hornswoggled into this scam.
Either way, he's been awfully quiet. I, for one, am glad.
