Having seen photo propaganda used in the media to benefit Barack Obama, one has to wonder if it will be equally important to circulate a picture that may not show the 'savior' in a particularly good light.
As such, a ticket design for the Democratic National Convention has been accompanied by a bit of controversy.
The credential appears to show an upside-down American flag on both sides. What's worse, the front makes it appear as if Obama is cloaked in the flag, as the stars are almost visually equivalent to his shirt. In fact, Matt Chandler speaking on behalf of the Obama campaign states:
"...it is a stylized flag designed to blend the stars on Senator Obama's shirt with the flag blowing in the wind."
The first question that arises is why would a man who once refused to wear the American flag on his lapel, be interested in sporting a patriotic shirt, overflowing with stars?
Second question, despite the following denial from the Democratic National Convention Committee...
"The DNCC community credentials incorporate patriotic design elements. They do not depict an actual American flag."
... How did the designer of the credentials not realize that perception might lead people to believe this is indeed a representation of an upside-down flag?
The blue field and stars on the ticket clearly are shown at the bottom left corner, and accompanying that with wavy red and white stripes does in fact, make this look like a flag.
Kristi King, the artist chosen to design the credentials had this to say when asked about her prospective inspiration:
"The most important initial inspiration comes from the client."
Perhaps this was the client inspiration she was referring to...

Anyhow, flag etiquette states that:
When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be in the uppermost corner and to the flags own right, that is, to the observer's left.
As iterated above, an observer of the DNC ticket would clearly see the field and stars to the lower left, bucking respectful protocol.
Then again, could we possibly have expected anything else?
Further flag flying rules stipulate:
The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
Could it be possible that the Obama campaign is experiencing a little distress?

Yeah, right. Just like on his plane when he removed just about all vestiges of the American Flag and "stylized" it for his own empty-suited ego - this left-coast piece of propoganda continues to show us who the real Osama Bama is - as if we didn't know already!

Your Point
August 18, 2008 - 13:19 ET by Rusty WeissBalboa,
I see your point. I would however counter the importance of this a few ways.
History - With the flag on the lapel, and hand over the heart stories having already been circulated, it is clear that the average person does find it important when a presidential candidate makes a gaffe like this.
Media - Would the media fail to mention this if McCain, had made a similar mistake? Past seems to indicate otherwise. In fact, McCain has had his issues with the press regarding a different kind of flag.
Position - This is the potential President of the United States. Wouldn't it behoove him, or someone on his staff to check into flag protocol prior to printing the tickets?
My wife and I recently bought our first house, and shortly thereafter, a flag to fly proudly from our porch. Before hanging the flag, I visited every Web site I could find to make sure I had it facing the right direction, read up on when it could be flown, studied the proper procedure for taking it down, and on and on. Now, if Johnny Average-Citizen can take those steps to ensure they are treating the flag of the United States with proper respect, shouldn't a candidate for the highest office in the land?
Another question that comes to mind is, how will Obama respond if this does indeed upset people on some level? You would expect him to respond with an apology, state that this was an innocent mistake, and send out different ticket designs if necessary. And I hope that he does.
I think you're right in the overall scheme of things this might be minor on the scale of importance. But I do think it's at least an interesting topic for the readers of this site.
What do you think?
I appreciate your answer,
August 18, 2008 - 14:18 ET by balboaI appreciate your answer, but I think it's silly that people would be concerned over how the flag is displayed on a 3 x 5 piece of plastic.
That depends on which flag
August 18, 2008 - 19:36 ET by CobraManHow concerned would people be if that same 3x5 plastic card showed the Confederate Flag? I bet that a LOT of people would be concerned, and VERY upset, don’t you?
It's not the flag itself that bothers people, it's Obama wrapping himself up in it after his flag pin gaff that's so annoying. Who's he trying to fool?

August 18, 2008 - 20:04 ET by balboaYes, CobraMan. That's a comment I can get behind. This is much closer to a case of Obama pandering than some kind of hidden dig at America or insult to the flag.

August 19, 2008 - 12:21 ET by Dan The Man 2As for the Confederate Flag...well, first it wouldn't make any sense for Democrats to do that - Seems to me plenty of Democrats did just that when it suited them. One in particular Robert Byrd comes to mind.

It is apparent that it is an attempt to poke "the establishment" in the eye with this BS. Let them. This just puts their views out on Front Street where, if McCain plays his cards right, can show the rest of America, the so-called middle of the road voters, exactly how far left the party once known as the democrats have gone.

So I don't think it's a big deal, but the back side of the badge, without Obama, clearly shows the flag upside down. You can maybe reason away the front side per the excuse given, but not the back.
If you're going to use an image of the US flag, you should follow the established, accepted rules. An upside down US flag is as verbotin as showing it laying on the ground.

Why is it important?
August 18, 2008 - 13:18 ET by MearlineI think because it shows the reluctance of mr. obama to put America first. It shows his conflicted loyalty to America and american values. It indicates to people who want to see this country maintain its superiority (and that's exactly what it is) that THAT is not a goal of mr. obama. It questions his judgement, his friends and their judgment, the judgement of the people who are blindly following him. I know you won't like it, but there it is.

August 18, 2008 - 13:37 ET by balboaYou get all that from the design of a press pass? Really. The design of a press pass is an indication that Obama isn't interested in maintaining the superiority of this country.

August 18, 2008 - 13:46 ET by MassConservBal, you treat this as if this design appeared out of a vacuum. It's not just the design of the pass; it's his initial reasoning for not wearing a flag pin; his not paying proper respect for the national anthem by standing with his hand over his heart; his telling us we need to teach our kids Spanish because we shouldn't expect immigrants to assimilate; his presumptive use of a campaign logo bearing an all too similar look to that of the Presidential Seal.

That's what they should do - reprint them. Obama raised 52 million in July alone. They could afford the few thousand to reprint. Of course they would have to admit it was a mistake...
But none of those things

THE FLAG CODE
Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10
As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress
Approved July 7, 1976
§ 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing...
As a sign that he's not as self centered as he appears and places his country first, maybe his staffers should affix the string to the bottom of the credentials...this way, the Flag will, as it should, fly upright....the downside for Obama is that his head will be upside down..
Who's #1 Obama? Your headshot or the US Flag?

Such hypocrisy from a Senator is unacceptable
August 18, 2008 - 14:02 ET by c5thenHe used to wear a lapel flag as did many people, until the left-wing nazies started to associate flag wearing and patriotism with the right and conservatives. At that point, Obama removed his lapel flag and said that it "was not important to wear one to prove you were a patriot". Now that flag imagery is again associated with good stuff, he is eager to be seen with it.
Complete and total hypocrisy and blatant political pandering. It is appropriate that the flag is depicted upside down on the tickets to the DNC Convention. If Obama does manage to get elected or somehow becomes President, this country will indeed be in severe distress.

Doesn't understand putting his hand over his heart when the National Anthem is played.
Doesn't wear a flag pin because he thinks it's too obviously patriotic (this from a presidential candidate?).
Thinks it's cool to rip off the Presidential Seal and use it as his own?
Doesn't understand that an upside down American flag is a symbol of distress?

The Upside Down Flag Is No Mistake
August 18, 2008 - 14:55 ET by jonezeeThe upside down flag on the DNC ticket is no mistake. It's simply a continuation of MSNBC's upside down flag logo, which the network has refused to comment on.
Also, you can see an upside down flag at the end of the anti-war movie Valley of Elah.
This is just the latest effort by left-wingers to smear America and it's totally despicable.
Upside Down Flag Is No Mistake
August 19, 2008 - 07:52 ET by Secret ConservativeI agree that the upside down flag is no mistake. In fact, the lefty websites are encouraging people to fly flags upside down as a protest of the Bush Administration.
"Flying the American flag upside-down has a specific and long-held meaning: it is an internationally recognized sign of “dire distress” signifying “extreme danger to life or property” (US Code Chapter 10, 176). Any other display of the flag with the union side down is categorized as disrespect."
So it would come as no surprise that this would be done deliberately for the Dem's convention.

He was jerked around so much as a kid, that he never knew what it meant to be an American. He misses the mark every time he tries. So what if the flag is rendered in an a crummy design.
