MRC’s Notable Quotables: Tea Party About to ‘Bump Up Against Reality’
As a Monday morning treat for NewsBusters readers, here is a sampling of the quotes from the latest edition of MRC’s Notable Quotables newsletter, a compilation of the most outrageous, sometimes humorous, quotes in the liberal media. All of the quotes, plus past issues going back to 1988, can be found at www.MRC.org.
Forget What Voters Said, It’s Time for Higher Taxes
Host Christiane Amanpour: “There are many economists who simply say the math does not add up, if you’re not going to agree to raising taxes. Do you agree that taxes will have to be raised, as well?”
Senator-elect Rand Paul: “Well, I think it’s not a revenue problem. It’s a spending problem.”
Amanpour: “But it is a revenue problem according to so many economists.”
— ABC’s This Week, November 7.
“Republicans and Democrats have to come to grips with the fact that you may have to raise taxes if you really want to bring the budget under control at some point.”
— Host David Gregory to the National Urban League’s Marc Morial on Meet the Press, November 7.
Stockman “Brave” Now That He’s Pushing Higher Taxes
“With our national debt in the trillions, budget experts will tell you that just taxing the rich isn’t enough. One Republican brave enough to go public is David Stockman, President Reagan’s budget director. He says all the Bush tax cuts should be eliminated — even those on the middle class. And he says his own Republican Party has gone too far with its anti-tax religion.”
— CBS’s Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes, October 31.
Grumpy NBC: Tea Party About to “Bump Up Against Reality”
NBC’s Tom Brokaw: “Matt Kibbe, who speaks for Freedom Works, the Dick Armey organization has said, ‘We want this message to go across the country. The people want less from their federal government.’ We’ve heard that before, when it bumps up against reality and you’re talking about closing a base or shutting down an agricultural substation of some kind, then it gets pretty tough to do, Brian.”
Anchor Brian Williams: “Reminds me of the signs at more than one rally this past season: ‘Get the government out of my Social Security. Get the government out of my Medicare.’”
— During NBC’s election night coverage, November 2.
Debunking “Myth” that Election Was Bad News for Democrats
“Even as they were electing Republicans in huge numbers, a majority of voters said they had an unfavorable view of the Republican Party....Voters were fairly evenly divided on what many Republicans made Exhibit A in their case that the Obama administration had overreached: the new health care law....Voters were also divided on questions of taxing and spending.....And despite what politicians, political analysts and pundits have been saying for weeks, if not months, most of the voters themselves claimed that the election was not a referendum on the President.”
— New York Times correspondent Michael Cooper in a November 5 “Political Memo” headlined, “Debunking the Myths of the Midterm.”
Shame on Americans for Turning Their Backs on “The Anointed One”
“How could we resist a man who simply by opening his mouth could move mountains?...There are many explanations for why he seems diminished by the power of his own office, from the vestigial racism of the American public to his misreading of his own mandate....Of course, Obama has never turned his back on us, but so many Americans have turned their backs on him that it amounts to The Anointed One, as he is sometimes referred, being stripped of something that can never return: his anointment.”
— From “Why President Obama Will Never Be Barack Obama Again,” a November 4 Esquire magazine “The Politics Blog” post by Tom Junod.
Real Problem: Obama’s Policies Just Weren’t Liberal Enough
“If the stimulus had been bigger and the financial reform package clearer and stronger, the public would have had a different — and, I believe, more positive — sense of the President’s agenda.”
— Time’s Joe Klein writing in his magazine’s “Swampland” blog, November 4.
What Happens When Tea Party Shuts Down Government?
Co-host Harry Smith: “So here’s your question — last, but not least. It gets to be February, all is said and done, big Republican wave just rolls in there. There’ll be a routine vote, for instance, to increase the debt ceiling and the Tea Party guys are going to say, ‘Over my dead body,’ and the government comes to a screeching halt. Then what happens?”
Author Ann Coulter: “Well, the media will blame the Republicans.”
— CBS’s The Early Show, November 2.

It was a draw?
Submitted by KC Mulville on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 11:21am.
Funny how the largest turnover in seats, since decades ago, turns out to have been a draw. The election sent no signal, and we discover that Republicans can't do anything because the post-election poll doesn't authorize it ... so say the liberals.
Funny. When Obama won the presidency, it was clear evidence of a new era.
Yes, it was a draw

"But it's a revenue problem
Submitted by MikeB on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 12:24pm.
"But it's a revenue problem according to so many economists" of the Karl Marx school. It's a spending problem. If, and it's a big if, Congress spent only on that which is Constitutionally allowed for the federal government, then we wouldn't have a deficit. Defund and disestablish the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, and incrementally reduced funding for the welfare programs. I say incrementally, so the parasites that are on welfare will have time to realize the gravy train is over and they can get jobs. End the Social Security program, or make it voluntary (again). And for those who choose to continue to pay in, make it actuarily sound. Those that are on Social Security now (or are less that 20 years from retirement) should be able to continue on Social security, after all, they paid into it all their working lives. For those who are further than 20 years from retirement, start making financial plans for your retirement. Do not fund Obamacare, and start repealing it piece by piece. Make the libs defend their votes on why the federal government should even be involved. Stop the fraud in medicare, and prosecute the h*ll out of those who are engaging in fraud. For those who are convicted, fine them into poverty (and beyond). There are so many things that could be done to bring down the deficit and start paying off the debt other than raising tax rates.
ObysmalCare can't be repealed
Submitted by HockeyKid on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 12:36pm.
piece by piece. In their haste to pass it, the Dems forgot to put in a severability clause (the part that says if a piece is separated, the rest stands). So, if for any reason any part of the law is struck down or repealed, the whole thing must go.
So, if the mandated purchase concept causes the SCOTUS to cry foul, the whole train has to be wrecked. Woohoooo!!

It's ALWAYS a spending problem!
Submitted by Newsbubba on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 12:31pm.
Liberals remind me of the two cousins of Barack who decided to go in the watermelon business. They got a truck, drove out to a farm and bought a load of watermelons for $1.00 each. Back in the city, they were selling the melons for $.50 each. At the end of several days, they couldn't figure out why they weren't making any money. Finally the smarter of the two said, "I figured out the problem. We need a bigger truck so we can do more volume."
Money problems are ALWAYS spending problems! If you don't spend a dollar of the taxpayers money, you have a whole dollar left in the hands of the guy who earned it. If you raise the taxes of the guy who earned the money by a dollar, he is out the whole dollar, the government now has a dollar, which by the time they get through screwing with it in Washington will be worth shitte! The taxpayers will be lucky to see ten cents worth of good from that buck, while federal workers will have their salaries raised to insure that screwing the public is well staffed.
This ain't a real hard concept to get your head around.
Yeah it's a....

bunch of BS, these Liberals haven't a clue, just by reading there headlines and some of there responses like Amanpour asking Sen elect Paul in her response "It's a Revenue Problem" really I could of swore that's what Paul was saying in the first place !!! If these Pundits would watch and listen to what there actually saying on TV I bet most of them would possibly find a different line of work, better yet if management would listen to what there pundits/reporters are saying they would fire'em all !!!
Obama?! Watermelons!? Egad!

I wasn't talking "watermelon" watermelon! 'Sides Barack ain't "black" black, yo? Least according to da rev and Whoopie.
I love watermelon, especially when it's filled with vodka! I also love fried chicken and collard greens. Hmmm, maybe I am racist!

All worthy quotes. However, one of the best has been left out. Of course she is not media, but Pelosi's "We have to pass the bill before we can see what is in it." has to be one of the all time stupidist quotes on record. Anywhere. For anytime.
Save a SeAL, club a liberal/troll!!
You can always raise something.
Submitted by ajkrik on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 12:39pm.
The media arm of the liberals is so pathetic. " according to many economists." What economists? Why aren't they there discussing this with economists who disagree?
"Republicans and Democrats have come to grips" . . . What Republicans and Democrats? Who are they?
This is just like "a consensus of scientists". Really is ANYONE still listening to these establishment tools?
And here's another display of their bias. Why don't they first focus on how spending can be cut? The first question is always "will you have to raise taxes?"
As long as politicians can rely on tax increases, they will not make the cuts they need to make. So tax increases should be the very LAST thing to discuss. And it should only come after they've spent time cutting and making plans to cut more.
Dems create crises and then ask why we have crises.
Submitted by JLin on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 12:46pm.
Brilliant. Just like the Commission's proposed "22% baseline" for government spending made after their ridiculous spending binges. Memo to Dem/Marxist morons: You dolts get to balance a 15% GDP budget every year period. No basline, no contingencies. Now shut up and go to your sand box before we put you in jail for good. For crying out loud.
What is so hard to understand?
Submitted by ajkrik on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 12:52pm.
Tax revenues as a percentage of production can not exceed 100. You don't have to be a prize-winning economist to understand that if you tax more than 20% of the production in an economy you are KILLING the engine.
Ask these idiots "What percent of the GDP are you willing to tax?"
Ignorance of the ruling class. This is a sign of doom.
I like to ask;

Submitted by rbosque on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 1:16pm.
It is spending that has gotten us in this mess in the first place. What economist is saying we must increase taxes in a recession? Krugman? That man is a paid hack.
OK Christiane think of it
Submitted by tominhouston on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 1:27pm.
OK Christiane think of it this way.
A person goes to New York.
This person goes into Sardi's knowing they only have $9.77 in a five, two ones and the rest in change.
This person orders and the waiter delivers a Grilled 10 oz. Sirloin Steak served with Horseradish Crushed Yukon Potato, King Mushroom Bordelaise, Jumbo Asparagus and a Cabernet Beef Jus Reduction for $33.00 not including the wine, desert, coffee and the tip.
Please tell me what the hell difference it makes if this person calls the problem a spending problem or a revenue problem. The simple fact of the matter is the person had no business eating there if that's all the money they had. "
No need to raise taxes
Submitted by Vonu on Mon, 11/15/2010 - 1:30pm.
No need for taxes at all. Ben can just print up what we need. This, we are told, will stimulate the economy and help the rest of the world. Balls to the wall! Sort of a Fed version of the teabagging.

experience? Or anecdotal "facts", dbz?
Did you ever think it might be a bit more cost-effective to deploy a division from Europe, than it is to deploy the equivalent division from Ft. Hood, Camp LeJeune or Camp Pendleton? Ever been to the training centers at Wildflecken, Grafenwoehr or Hohenfels?
