He's No Eliot Spitzer; ABC, CBS and NBC All Brand John Ensign a 'Republican'

All three broadcast network morning shows on Wednesday made a point of labeling Nevada Senator John Ensign as a “Republican” after the Senator came forward last night to admit having an extramarital affair last year. NBC, which refrained for days from calling New York Governor Eliot Spitzer a “Democrat” after his relationship with a prostitute was exposed, called Ensign a “conservative Republican,” while CBS made a point of reciting Ensign’s associations with Christian groups.

ABC’s Good Morning America provided the only full report, with the on-screen headline declaring “Leading GOP Senator Admits Affair.” News anchor Chris Cuomo and correspondent Jonathan Karl noted Ensign’s Republican affiliation three times: “A rising star in the Republican Party is coming forward....” “John Ensign is a member of the Republican leadership....” and “The Republican from Nevada admits cheating on his wife...”

Last year, NewsBusters noted how the networks always added the “Republican” label to GOP politicians caught in sex scandals, but not Democrats; with their coverage of the Ensign scandal this morning, the networks are maintaining their perfectly slanted approach.

CHRIS CUOMO: There's some intrigue developing in the nation's capital today. A rising star in the Republican Party is coming forward with a shocking admission and an equally stunning explanation. Jon Karl is on Capitol Hill for us. He'll fill in the blanks for us. Good morning, Jon.

JONATHAN KARL: Good morning, Chris. John Ensign is a member of the Republican leadership in the Senate, and he had been considering a run for President in 2012. That was before this.

SENATOR JOHN ENSIGN: It's absolutely the worst thing that I've ever done in my life.

KARL: An embarrassing admission from Senator John Ensign. The Republican from Nevada admits cheating on his wife with a married campaign staffer.

ENSIGN: I know that I have deeply hurt and disappointed my wife, Darlene, my children, and all those who believed in me.

KARL: As to why he is talking about this now, Politico reports that the woman's husband, who also worked for Senator Ensign, met with him and demanded money to stay silent. Ensign reportedly decided to come clean, rather than to give in to blackmail.

Ensign says he hopes to stay in the Senate and continue serving the people of Nevada. As for his wife, Darlene, she was not there when he made his confession last night. But she says, she put out her own statement, saying she has reconciled with her husband, and that the whole affair had, quote, "made their marriage stronger." Chris.

CUOMO: All right, Jon, thanks for that.

CHRIS WRAGGE: Nevada's Republican Senator John Ensign admits he had an extramarital affair last year. Speaking yesterday, Ensign said the affair with a campaign aide was absolutely the worst thing he's ever done.

SENATOR JOHN ENSIGN: If there was ever anything that I could take back in my life, this would be it. I take full responsibility for my actions.

WRAGGE: Ensign belongs to the Men's Christian Ministry, Promise Keepers, and was a potential  GOP presidential candidate. He says he has no intentions of resigning.

# NBC’s Today, 7am news briefs:

ANN CURRY: Nevada Senator John Ensign says he has no plans to resign. Last night the conservative Republican admitted to an extramarital affair with a woman on his campaign staff. NBC News has confirmed that he told other senators the reason he decided to go public about the affair is that his ex-mistress was trying to extort money from him.

The left needs to attack the woman like they did gov Palin.

And remember how far the MSM went to try to validate rumors of Palin having an affair (which she never did). But the media made sure you knew of the 'allegations'.  The NYT couldn't find any sex dirt on Palin but they deceptively characterized their stories on her as if there had been. There were dozens of reporters in Alaska combing through Palin's record looking for any smidgen of dirt on her records and in her personal life -- and worst of all, they brazenly admitted they were looking for anything bad to smear her with. All done to provide cover for Obama and his numerous negatives.  On the other hand, all low and high-profile Democrats who have had extra-marital affairs like Clinton, Edwards, Kennedys, Spitzer, McSleezy, Mel Reynolds, Henry Cisneros, Tim Mahoney, Kwame Kilpatrick, etc...etc... enjoy long and healthy 'grace peroids' before the liberal media finally come out with the story or dutifully attempt to spike it all together.  In short, Democrat extra-marital affair:   A Yawn.     Republican extra-marital affair:  Blowout Scandal!

Why don't these reporters

Why don't these reporters just come out and say, "Yes!  A Republican's been caught in an affair!  TIME TO PARTY, BABY!!"

On a lighter note, I think we should be understanding of Sen. Ensign's predicament.  After all, he's from Nevada, home of Sen. "Whorehouse Harry" Reid, famous for regaling us all with the story of how he learned to swim at the local whorehouse in Searchlight, Nevada.

Unfairness

The argument from the media is that the labels "Republican" and "conservative" advocate traditional values, so the conservative who cheats on his wife is a much bigger hypocrite.

However, in making that argument, they implicitly admit that Democrats don't advocate the same values. Remember that the next time the media pushes a Democrat and claims he has a commitment to moral values.

The double standard is alive and well. This doens't excuse the philandering senator by any means. But it does show the different standards.

That argument is BS

"Democrat" and "liberal" are supposed to advocate equality for all and minority rights (even though we know that in reality the conservatives advocate this).  So by the media's line of thinking everytime a Democrat says something blatantly racist (Hillary Clinton, Ghandi; Biden, numerous occassions) the Democrats should get slammed, but they don't. It's just a convenient excuse to cover up their bias.

Um, pardon me for overstating the obvious, but since when did "reporters" get into the business of being the judge and jury on hypocrisy?

Pointing out hypocrisy is a moral judgement.  While there is nothing wrong with making moral judgements per se, this ought not be the job of reporters, who are supposed to be reporting "just the facts ma'am."  Furthermore, there is plenty of hypocrisy to go around on the left, yet there they don't seem to want to assume the watchdog role.  I don't have a problem with them identifying the political party -- it's that they are transparently biased about it.

Bottom line is, the double standard employed by the pop-media for Democrats and Republicans is, in and of itself, hypocrisy to the n-th degree.

Moral equivalence

Congressman Jefferson, a Democrat and a crook, is finally in court for his crimes. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, used insider trading to enchance his ill-gotten fortune. John Edwards, a Democrat, also had an affair and an illegitimate child. And never forget Bill Clinton and the man who is soon to be given sainthood, Teddy Kennedy. And wasn't Democrat Barny Frank using his own residence as a whorehouse? Sure, our Congress and the present Administration are bunch of scum, but the "liberal" media can't keep their feigned outrage in check when it comes to Republicans and conservatives. Hypocrites all.

We can still blame the media while condemning the actions of this person. Besides I don't this person and as such he could be the most liberal Republican to ever run for office. Even if conservative it doesn't excuse his actions but since NB is trying to demonstrate bias in the media then I don't see where the article itself should address the personality faults of the politicians. However, that can certainly be brought up in the comments.

Why blame the media, Ensign went to the media to disclose his affair. If you want to blame anyone, blame the senator himself and his lack of judgement.

I'm assuming this is a deliberate attempt to be disingenuous since no one blames the media for actually reporting a story just their selective sources, memories, ‘facts’ and prejudices while doing so. The media did their job with the story and actually reported it but perhaps your point is that he should have not come out to the media and tried to hide the story. That wouldn’t work because he is a Republican and the first time he actually rankled the media/Democrats he would be fully vetted and the sensationalism would have been much worse and more damaging to the party. History proves this to be true. Only Democrats can get away with trying to hide their indiscretions but even that is limited.

Agreed. He had 'an affair', using the term loosely, while separated. I would call it a relationship. This was a nothing story for Ensign until he reconciliated with his wife, and only at that point did it get messy. He is to be commended for reconciling.

When this happens to Republicans, it's always the democratics running around shrieking in outrage. I could care less.

Beware

Any Republicans that have potential for the nomination in 2012 have to be on guard for female democratic operatives working undercover to generate these scandals. We are dealing with the Chicago mafia here, and no tactic is below them.

Is anyone upset that Ensign

Is anyone upset that Ensign had an affair, or just that it's being treated differently than when Spitzer and Edwards were busted?  I've seen surprisingly little on this story so far, but I know there's more to come.  This is a sexy little story - not just the affair itself, but blackmail, another married woman... Seems Ensign was the most honorable party in this incident.

Don't be played by the liberal media

Good God people, are we going to set the bar so high that no one that has ever sinned can be a Republican? We are in danger of losing our country to socialism and some of you want to discard a Republican from any significant role in the party because he gave into temptation once? Who of you are without sin? This is garbage.

There is the problem in a nutshell

If Conservative's espouse traditional marriage and crucify those who have cheated and sinned (Clinton and the rest of the dems mentioned below) , then they all should live and lead by example.  If you are conservative then act like one.  That's why the media pounces on the hypocracy charge!  It's right there in front of their faces...they can't ignore Ensigns past statements and positions when he fails to meet them himself.
