In 2007 Interview, ABC’s Gibson Greeted Obama With Softballs

Nearly a year ago, when the inexperienced presidential candidate Barack Obama sat for his first interview with Charles Gibson, the ABC anchor did not try and expose any gaps in Obama’s foreign policy knowledge or press him about his readiness for the job he was seeking. Instead Gibson emphasized Obama’s personal story, about how his parents met, how Obama met his wife, etc.

But just as he did with his Thursday night interview with GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Gibson did ask Obama about the “hubris” he displayed in seeking the presidency. Here’s the exchange from the November 1, 2007 World News interview:

CHARLES GIBSON: So did you think to yourself, 'Barack, what kind of hubris is this that I am thinking about being President?"

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

BARACK OBAMA: Yes. I think if you don't have enough self-awareness to see the element of megalomania involved in thinking you can be president, then you probably shouldn't be president. I think there's a slight madness to thinking that you should be the leader of the free world.

That’s the only similarity to Gibson’s approach to Palin. Gibson sat down with Obama only two months before the Iowa caucuses, when the Illinois Senator was running a strong second to Hillary Clinton in national polls. Yet the questions posed by Gibson at that time stuck to the same positive biographical elements that greeted Obama when he first emerged on the national stage in 2004.

Gibson could have been tougher with Obama, who had already inspired ridicule of his foreign policy acumen by suggesting he would meet hostile heads of state without preconditions.

(For details on how the big three broadcast networks showered Obama with good press during the run-up to the Democratic primaries, see the MRC’s Special Report: “Obama’s Margin of Victory: The Media.”)

Here’s the full transcript of the November 1, 2007 segment on ABC’s World News, part of a series of profiles of the leading presidential candidates:

CHARLES GIBSON: Next, the presidential race and our attempt to explore the private side of the candidates, to learn about the events and the influences that have shaped them and brought them to this point in their political careers. So today in our “Who Is?” series, a Democrat relatively new to national politics, Senator Barack Obama.

SENATOR BARACK OBAMA: Every man is either trying to live up to his father's expectations or make up for his father's mistakes. And, you know, in some ways, I'm probably doing both.

GIBSON: Your mom comes from the Pacific Northwest, migrates to Hawaii, goes to college there, right away, meets a dashing young Kenyan, gets pregnant and the result-

OBAMA: That's me.

GIBSON: That's you. (Voiceover) His father got a fellowship to study on the mainland and never came back.

OBAMA: He became sort of a mythic figure. One, one of the great gifts that my mother gave to me was a positive impression of my father despite the fact that he didn't always behave very well towards her or to his family. And so he was gone by the time I was two.

GIBSON: Obama's mother would remarry and take her son to Indonesia for five years. Only once again did he ever see his father, that, when Obama was 10. (to Obama) He didn't care enough to stay.

OBAMA: Right.

GIBSON: How did you internalize that?

OBAMA: My conclusion is that some of my drive comes from wanting to prove that he should have stuck around, that, that I was worthy of his attentions. There's no doubt that his absence had an impact on me. I engaged in a bunch of self-destructive behavior. I drank. I, you know, tried drugs. I didn't take my schoolwork seriously.

GIBSON: It all changed for Obama in his final college years. (to Obama) What flipped?

OBAMA: I like to think that, that at some point, the, the better angels of my nature took control and that I had some sense deep inside me that, you know, I could, I could make a contribution.

GIBSON: For five years out of college, he worked to pay off student loans and was a community organizer in Chicago, which led him back to school, Harvard Law School, and on a summer job, met this young woman. (to Obama) Did you know right away?

OBAMA: I knew I liked her right away. Michelle has this wonderful sense of humor. And I knew that right away, she would get the joke. She knew how I looked at the world and appreciated it.

GIBSON: They have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. At first, Obama was intimidated by the Harvard law students.

OBAMA: You got a sense, these folks are running on nuclear energy and I'm running on, on steam.

GIBSON: But he found he could more than hold his own, finishing first in his class and being editor of the 'Harvard Law Review." He's candid: it was at Harvard he first thought of running for President.

OBAMA: I thought these will be the people who will be leading at some point. And, you know, I feel comfortable within this group, being able to lead.

GIBSON: So did you think to yourself, 'Barack, what kind of hubris is this that I am thinking about being President?"

OBAMA: Yes. I think if you don't have enough self-awareness to see the element of megalomania involved in thinking you can be president, then you probably shouldn't be president. I think there's a slight madness to thinking that you should be the leader of the free world.

GIBSON: You have written, "I learned to slip back and forth between my black and my white worlds." The simple question I guess is in which world do you really belong?

OBAMA: I think it's both. What's interesting is, is how deeply American I feel, considering this exotic background, that, somehow, all this, this amalgam is part of who I am. And that's part of the reason I love this country so much.

GIBSON: And you can see extended versions of our "Who Is?" series, which will ultimately include all the presidential candidates, at ABCNEWS.com.

Well, thank God Obama

Well, thank God Obama embraced that megalomania thing and ran with it.

And is that a smile there on Gibson? Didn't see that yesterday.

That...

...was the first thing I noticed.

Softballs for Democrats

Gibson: So lets get serious here for a moment Mr Obama, When exactly did your mother give you your first stick of gum?

Gibson: So Ms Palin, what exactly do you know about nuclear fusion and it's affect on the populous should it escape out of those reactors you republicans want to build, AND have you thought about the affect on us democrats who can't wait to say I told you so when we hope it happens?

Obama's answer: "Stick of,

Obama's answer: "Stick of, er, ah, gum? Well, ah, the VERY first , er, stick, ah, of, gum, was, well, I mean, so to speak, in lieu of, rather than, in spite of, in addition to, I mean, the Bush administration, Carl Rove, er, ah, well, I see what you mean and I agree with you, but not entirely, as I've said many times before, I've explained this many times and my position has not changed, ...................."

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

Gibson: Thank you, Mr... or

Gibson: Thank you, Mr... or I think it is safe to say, now. President Obama.

I am sure Gibson got a

I am sure Gibson got a directive to hammer palin. Gibson gave it his best shot. That would explain the "I am a lot smarter than you" look he was giving Palin.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Gibson, like many other

Gibson, like many other MSMers who have been in front of the cameras for far too long, have become caricatures of themselves. Cartoon characters, really. They are smug, narrow-minded, and self-absorbed. They live in a culturally deprived ghetto of their own making, and have no clue that many, many people loath their work.

There I said it and I'm glad.

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

Gibson's Jekyll and Hyde routine

It is clear Charlie Gibson was on a mission last night to grill Sarah Palin, but when interviewing Obama he did indeed throw softballs.  This tells us more about the interviewer than the candidate.

MSM

MSM = Mud Slinging Maniacs.

None have the brains to put on an intelegent interview.

Follow the talking points.

Ever notice thoes that have minds of their own and can't be led end up at Fox?

They need to be sent to Gitmo for awhile. They are for the terroists so that makes them one of them.

Good!

Believe it or not, when the MSM throw softballs at Obama and the Democrats that's better for conservatives as we know what they ar softballs and when someone who is strong and confident like Palin pushes Gibson back on his leading and biased questions, it makes her look all the more presidential (or vice-presidential if that is a word).  Keep it coming MSM, conservatives are LOVING the attention!

Could it be

Could it be the hard, nonsensical questions dealt out to Republicans is exactly why that when Hussein Obama is pushed, ever so slightly, he goes into meltdown mode -- Joe Biden, he just goes down.

If you are used to tough questions, it toughens you up.

The gaff-o-matic ticket continues to gaffe on, and on and on -- just let Joe be Joe and Hussein be Hussein.

2008 the year the drive by media goes face down in the mud.

the WRONG man

Sen. Biden is a blowhard who somehow manages to walk with his foot in his mouth, but he's not a fool.  He knows McCain and now Obama. I can't help but think that deep down he believes McCain is the right man for the job and that Obama is the WRONG man.

Smile

Re Smile: exactly...there was no smile with Palin. A scowl. A DA prosecutor. I would have no problem if Charlie would ask The Messiah the same questions in the same condescening manner

Yes. In Gibson's eyes, she

Yes. In Gibson's eyes, she was "guilty" of being a conservative, as charged. And, by golly, he was going to get to the bottom of this situation. Haruumph. ;+}

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

I actually think he was

I actually think he was pissed that she kept calling him "Charlie".

Respect is earned. Let's see, pompous TV commentator; Govenor of Alaska. Yep, Goveneor wins everytime. Considering how he treated her she should switch to calling him Chuck.

"All generalizations are false, including this one.” Mark Twain

Charlie

Well, you know, he WAS Charlie Gibson when he was on Good Morning America with Joan Lunden.  Not sure exactly when he decided to be CHARLES, maybe it's when he got the nightly news job.  I'm sure he thinks the name gives him more gravitas - and you know how important THAT is to the libs.  So I'm sure Sarah wasn't being disrespectful, she was just using the name most of America knows him by.

As I watched the interview with Palin I found myself wondering, when Gibson interviewed Obama, were they positioned so that on camera Gibson was significantly ABOVE Obama?  It sure looked that way with Palin.  He looked huge and she looked small.  I'm sure that was deliberate.

Maybe the next time she can

Maybe the next time she can use some of these as her responses to him.

Our poll numbers are up Chuck

When your resources are under ground you need to bring them up Chuck

Speaking of Alaska's oil revenues it made sense to divey them up Chuck

I don't agree that humans are the cause of temperatures going up Chuck

Against the Euro the dollar is up Chuck

"Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"

Gibson interrogation

Where are the democrats?  Where's the ACLU?  They should be screaming at the top of their lungs...Palin was Worse than waterboarded last night by the 'interrogation' by Gibson. The way he looked down upon her over his glasses, the way he wouldn't stop asking the same questions if he didnt like the answers, the way he called her names(hubris)...the way he tried to trick her up.....how close they put the chairs together. This was an 'interrogation' at its worse.    All Gibson needed were some dogs and a camera.   Oops...just dogs.

Agreement

I am willing to make an agreement with the left (of course that includes the msm, dems, hollywood, etc.)

I will admit that we have the least experienced VP candidate if the will own up to having the most inexperienced Presidential candidate in the history of our nation.

No that we are on equal ground, lets get down to personal characteristics that are the most important to who we have as a leader of the free world:

1. Whose philosphies are nearer to Marxism and outright socialism?

2. Which ticket emodies a life of associations with people bent on the destruction of American society and which one embraces Americanism and are PROUD to be Americans?

3. Who most embodies the sanctity of life?

4. Which ones rather beleive that the American public will swallow any lie as long as there is something for them in it?

5. Who is promising a free lunch?

6. Who is treating the leader of the free world like a crminal, he that has kept us from being attacked again for 7 years?

7. Who most embodies the traditional American way of life?

8. Whom do you trust?

Paul G

"All Gibson needed..."

and hot lights too, you forgot the hot lights.

I guess they had that covered too though...

"So did you think to

"So did you think to yourself, 'Charlie, what kind of hubris is this that I am thinking about being an impartial, fair and balanced journalist?"

Yeah... you know, I have a couple of lifelong ambitions that haven't quite panned out the way I wanted them to, as well! I think we all do.

"We retort..... you decide."

Morning Show Clown

I can't believe anyone with an ounce of common sense would take Chuck Gibson as a serious journalist.  He's just another OVERPAID morning fluff show host.  I guess he thinks, if he looks over his spectacles, it makes him look less than stupid

"you can see extended

"you can see extended versions of our "Who Is?" series, which will ultimately include all the presidential candidates, at ABCNEWS.com."

I went to their site, and only found this here. It's interesting in several ways. They mention that a "bomb exploded onboard," that McCain escaped with shrapnel wounds, and that 130-odd sailors died. I've heard people claim McCain was an "incompetent pilot," could this incident be the source? But it doesn't say the bomb was on McCain's plane, and it doesn't say it WASN'T. Seems to leave the door open to blaming the incident on Mac, but in a "deniable" way, y'know?

Some other weird things, like a pic of JM with his current wife when their wedding is mentioned, but Mac looks much older in that pic than the following one, when he retires from the Navy in the next year. Did we mention he's old?

There are some other questionable "spins," take a look.

As for Chuckie's interview style, yeah, he definitely took it easy on Obama compared to his treatment of Palin. If these bozo's would actually do their jobs, this country would be better off... hard to deny that they don't put "country first."

"... smells like... victory." - Robert Duvall

I found his interview and

I found his interview and the way he treated Palin cold and very aggressive. Not like the way he treated Obama. Typical of the liberal media to try and show the weakness of the candidate. Except in this case it didn't work, for him it worked against him. The interview showed me his disdain for her.

Stupid Journalism Tricks

Let's learn about some stupid things the media do. Folks, we shouldn't have been surprised at all by Mr. Gibson's hatchet job. Roasting someone journalists don't like - and asking their favorites gooey questions - is a classic "stupid journalism trick", something the MSM has done for decades. Another one is the clever or clumsy editing of the interview to make the subject look good or bad, depending on the person. Here's one more. Messrs. Obama and Biden have been suffering from gross "foot in mouth" disease all campaign long, and yet the press has ignored their idiocies. If Mr. McCain had said half of the moronic things this not-so-dynamic duo have spewed out, the press would have done a Dan Quayle on him!

Make them pay a price.

Any so called journalist who has demostrated a double standard during interviews and in depth reports should be declared persona non grata for any future access / interviews.

transcript

I have been on the ABC site trying to pull up the transcript of this interview and I absolutely cannot find it.  I wonder if they've pulled it.  Does anyone know where I can locate it?

reply

I would have to say that based on the data compile to date on the subject of press bias for Democrats and against Republicans, the answer would have to be a resounding ‘yes.’
