Are we seeing some fractures in the liberal media? Talking about Senator Obama’s surge to the lead in New Hampshire polls on Monday’s ‘Morning Joe’ on MSNBC, Hardball host Chris Matthews asserted that the “establishment press” would be part of Hillary Clinton’s resurgence. “There’s an establishment press — which is just as establishment as the establishment of the Democratic party — who can’t wait to write that fawning piece, ‘Here come the Clintons again.’”
Upon hearing that, ex-CBS anchor Dan Rather suggested that the media is really anti-Hillary right now: “I think they’re waiting to write the obituary....They’re just waiting to write ‘finis’ to the Clintons.”
Maybe this is a case of each journalist thinking the rest of the press is biased against their favorite. Over the years, Rather has provided some rather indulgent coverage to both of the Clintons, including a fawning profile of Hillary on the May 26, 1999 60 Minutes II (produced by Mary Mapes) in which Rather gooed, “Once a political lightning rod, today she is political lightning.”
On the other side of the coin, last October Matthews used his show to offer suggested anti-Hillary talking points to Obama, and he seemed thrilled by the Illinois Senator at a June 2007 Democratic candidates’ forum he was moderating: “So much of what you say just grabs people like me, because it sounds like Bobby Kennedy. It sounds like the ’ 60s at it’s absolute best.”
Here’s the exchange on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, which took place at about 8:37ET and began with Matthews describing the hurdles still facing an insurgent candidate like Obama:
MATTHEWS: “Often the idealistic, the — perhaps you could say the man of the left, if you will, but it’s not that simple. It’s the person who’s sort of more dramatic, more heroic. They do very well in the early stretch, and then the old interest group politician — the Humphreys, the Mondales, the Clintons, the Dukakises, the Gores — come in, they rally all the troops, the people that go to meetings for 30 years, and they grab back the power from the, uh, the morning glory. And maybe this guy is not a morning glory, but I do have that sense in me.And there’s also the press out there. There’s an establishment press — which is just as establishment as the establishment of the Democratic party — who can’t wait to write that fawning piece, ‘Here come the Clintons again’–
JOE SCARBOROUGH, interrupting: Well, I don’t know
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I’m not feeling that
DAN RATHER: I disagree. I think they’re waiting to write the obituary.
SCARBOROUGH: I think you’re right
RATHER: I think they already have the obituary written for her, I do think. You know, I never rule out the possibility you are right, but I think in this case they’re just waiting to write ‘finis’ to the Clintons.

Entitled Fired Up and Ready to Bore, it mocks the way that a Hillary campaign event deteriorated into utter boredom, with people leaving in droves by the end.
Wow, that was an entertaining video

January 7, 2008 - 11:36 ET by JerI hope the rumor of Hillary's impending withdrawal is true. That she could win a national election is highly problematic, and, if she did prevail, it would split the country even farther apart than it is now.
However, I would feel very badly for Dick Morris--Fox's fair and balanced lead campaign analyst--having wasted all that time and money in the Hillary smear video he breathlessly announced yesterday was ready for release.

Dan has some papers fixed at a place in Texas ready to run!!

I think they're both right.
January 7, 2008 - 11:45 ET by BruzillaI think they're both right. Most Republicans knew that Hillary was going to have the same major achille's heel that Janet Reno had when she tried to run for Governor of Florida - that being an inability to answer questions. Hillary won her senate seat because she was running in NY, which was largely friendly territory. She was never challenged. But a run for POTUS meant she wasn't going to be able to be Obfuscater-in-Chief and she was going to have to get specific.
So far, she hasn't been able to do that, and in defense she's blocking off all press access. The MSM has been going along thinking Hillary loves them, and the next thing they know Bill is carrying them out the front door like Fred Flintstone carrying Dino out at the end of the cartoon. And like Dino, they're dashing back in and locking the door. So I think there's quite a few Clintonistas who want to see Hillary win at all costs, and some jilted ones who want to see her suffer.
The media is dumping the Clintons.
January 7, 2008 - 11:53 ET by Missouri ConservativeThe drive-by media is dumping the Clintons because of one reason: viability. Hillary Clinton is just not a viable candidate for the Democrats, and the media now knows it. The media, first and foremost, are liberals, and they want a Democrat to win the White House. They now view Hillary as not being able to deliver on that. They Obama as the guy who can give the Democrats a win and so they are now propping him up.

January 7, 2008 - 12:14 ET by fonzie2178it blows my mind to see that there are "men" in this country who support her, sleepily or otherwise! Maybe we could relocate them all to France, including Nurse Ratchet, and they can have her there. It worked in NY when she knew she couldn't win her own home state!

This so called establishment press (MSM), Rich..
January 7, 2008 - 13:17 ET by Gary HallThis so called establishment press (MSM), Rich.. as Rather refers to, is simply playing a calculated game of chess for the moment.
Without a doubt, a large % of the MSM is rooting loud and clear for Obama. They'd also take Edwards side, if they thought he had a chance (they like his politics). Hilllary? If and when, or as soon, as Hillary pulls out front, and/or if she gets the nomination of her party, the MSM will be there marching her into the white house - all the little doubts and concerns will have disappeared forever. In the moment, they'd prefer something newer and more liberal, but in the end, it does not matter - the established MSM will only fully support a Democrat, and in the end, it doesn't matter who it is to them.
