Anita Dunn Blames Lee Atwater for Quoting Mao

  • Bookmark and Share

"Taken out of context!"

"You just didn't understand the irony!"

"Just kidding!"

The incredibly lame excuses those on the left come up with to try to explain away statements they made that have come back to haunt them is growing more hilarious by the day. Robert Reich clearly stated at a 2007 Berkeley lecture what an honest candidate for president who didn't worry about getting elected would say to senior citizens who face costly treatment to keep them alive: "It's too expensive...so we're going to let you die."

Reich's excuse for this and other bizarre health care statements by a hypothetical honest candidate for president? He was being "taken out of context" despite the fact that Reich himself originally put it into perfectly clear context to the point that his Berkeley audience was applauding in approval of the brutal "truths."

It would be hard to exceed the absurdity of Reich's laughably lame excuse but White House Communications Director makes a good stab at it in trying to explain away why she favorably  quoted Mao Tse Tung as one of her favorite political philosophers. Her unbelievably laughable excuse? She was only following in the footsteps of deceased Republican campaign strategist Lee Atwater who also quoted Mao. Before we get to Dunn's Lee Atwater excuse bellylaugh, let us review what she said about Mao:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A lot of you have a great deal of ability. A lot of you work hard. Put them together and that answers the ‘why not' question. There's usually not a good reason and then the third lesson and tip actually comes from two of my favorite political philosophers - Mao Tse Tung and Mother Teresa, not often coupled with each other but the two people that I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point, which is you're going to make choices. You're going to challenge. You're going to say why not. You're going to figure out how to do things that have never been done before, but here's the deal... These are your choices. They are no one else's. In 1947, when Mao Tse Tung was being challenged within his own party on his plan to basically take China over, Chiang Kai-Shek and the nationalist Chinese held the cities, they had the army. They had the air force. They had everything on their side, and people said how can you win? How can you do this? How can you do this? Against all the odds against you, and Mao Tse Tung said, you know, you fight your war, and I'll fight mine, and think about that for a second.

And now for the bellylaugh excuse from Anita Dunn as quoted at CNN:

"The Mao quote is one I picked up from the late Republican strategist Lee Atwater from something I read in the late 1980s, so I hope I don't get my progressive friends mad at me," Dunn told CNN.

Bill Dupray at True/Slant  completely destroys that pathetic excuse:

The issue isn’t whether Lee Atwater ever quoted Mao. A simpleton knows you don’t adopt somebody’s philosophy as your own simply by quoting them. But when you quote them and then explicitly say the person is one of your biggest influences, then you make it your own. So Dunn’s lame attempt to source the quote back to Atwater and have that somehow serve as an explanation for what she said is patently ridiculous.

And what about Dunn's description of Mao as  one of her "favorite political philosophers?" Not to worry, Dunn comes up with yet another comedy line to explain it away via CNN:

As for Beck's criticism: "The use of the phrase 'favorite political philosophers' was intended as irony, but clearly the effort fell flat -- at least with a certain Fox commentator whose sense of irony may be missing.

So you see. You peons just don't have the mental ability to see that Anita Dunn was merely being ironic despite the fact that was absolutely nothing in her facial expression, vocal tone, nor in what she said that displayed the slightest sense of irony. In fact, she was dead serious as you can plainly see in the video of her speech.

The only thing funnier than Anita Dunn's lame excuses is CNN not only completely buying into her bizarre explanations but also trying to actively aid her:

But it's not just Dunn, a Democrat, who has used Mao as someone she reads.

Media Matters for America, a liberal media watchdog group, points out that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, also a Fox News contributor, quoted Mao in a 1995 Roll Call profile.

"War is politics with blood; politics is war without blood," Gingrich said, citing Mao.

Karl Rove, another Fox News contributor, wrote in a December 2008 Wall Street Journal op-ed that President Bush "encouraged me to read a Mao biography."

So if a conservative quotes Mao or any other communist, that somehow gives the left free reign to favorably cite the same communists? Yes, your humble correspondent on several occasions did quote Lenin describing one of his political methods as "one step back, two steps forward." Anita Dunn can now quote Lenin approvingly as one of her "favorite political philosophers" and use me as her excuse.

What seems to be going on now is that whenever the left is quoted accurately, to their embarrassment, they come up with ridiculous excuses such as about how some Republican once used the same quote (whether favorably or not) or that they were just being ironic.

Former Democrat Alabama Governor George Wallace eventually stated that he was wrong to declare "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!" in his first inaugural speech in 1963. Perhaps Wallace should have later taken a cue from the way the left now operates and have claimed that he was merely being "taken out of context." Or he could have said he was only being ironic. Claiming that he was merely quoting someone else could have been an option as well.

We are in for some very entertaining times as voices from the left try to comedically explain away what they actually say.

Oh, please....

Can't these people even think up good rationalizations? Who is entering public service these days anyhow?

Some variation of "I misspoke" (image). Very common.

It's great. These leftarded fools live in their little bubble world and feel so secure they don't even bother hiding it any more. It's great for us.

Was Anita Dunn being ironic about Mother Teresa, too?

you beat me to it rousse

I made the same point below- too little too late though (lol)

→ Nothing ironic about it

For irony to be at play here, we'd have to detect a smidge of "nothing could be further from the truth"

No such "a-ha! moment" yet.  Crickets chirping. . .

Maybe 007memo can help us out here.

The quotes (in, or out of conotext, doesn't really matter):

"two of my favorite political philosophers - Mao Tse Tung and Mother Teresa" and,

"The use of the phrase 'favorite political philosophers' was intended as irony, but clearly the effort fell flat -- at least with a certain Fox commentator whose sense of irony may be missing."

I'm trying to figure out if the inclusion of Mother Teresa was also intended to be irony, or if the word "and" between Mao Tse Tung and Mother Teresa was supposed to be a disjunction conjunction; an effort that also fell flat.

You Noticed That Too?

For being a communications-type person, she was a poor public speaker and she did really weird things with her tongue as she spoke.  It was almost painful to watch.  I couldn't find where anyone else noticed that.

Who? Honest to Betsy....

This is the worst movie ever. The plot twists. The weird characters. The unbelievable lines. This liberal conspiracy/death match movie is awful.

Who is Lee Atwater? May god have mercy on my soul for ever going overseas. I tried to find out who Lee Atwater was. Here is what I get -

  1.  The devil himself.
  2.  Karl Rove's mentor.
  3. meaniness personified.
  4. a conservative.
  5. spawn of Mordor
  6. a liar that confessed to the meaniness of conservatism on his deathbed.

What is it with socialist leftist liberal weirdo's that everybody they disagree with has to be the spawn of Satan?

Seriously, I try to do a google search. I type in Lee Atwater, that little helper suggestion helper pops up. The very top of it's list -- Lee Atwater Deathbed Confession.

these ultra libs a little slack.  They are not accustomed to being in positions that allows more than a handful of people to hear them and requires them to be at least a little bit accountable for what they say.  Let's return them to the sidelines in 2012 so we don't have to listen.

Interesting to see if this lame excuse is sufficient to keep Lady Mao on the payroll.

If they let her go, Beck scores again, just doing the job real journalists won't do.

Meanwhile over at CBS, is Katie prepping for another colonoscopy?

Why do I think of Jules Verne and the name "Arne Saknussem" scrawled on the wall?

The Sheryl Crow "people should be limited to one sheet of toilet paper, oh, save our planet!" defense when their words come back to haunt them:

"I was kidding!"  "Can't you wingnuts take a joke!?" "It was SATIRE!"

The liberal hypocrisy..

is just so laughable at this point. As long as the MSM is not going to call these buffoons out, stories like these will remain simple distractions for the administration. If you actually take the time and truly investigate all of Obama's hand picked minions, just about all of them would be found to be so far left, so socialist in their thought processes, we would be spending 24/7 trying to have them removed. People must start preparing for 2010 and find out all they can about the candidates and vote with intelligence and knowledge.

More to Come?

I suspect there is more video of this commie slug spouting her respect for Mao.  Taking a page out of biggovernment.com's playbook, Glenn may have just shown one clip and then held his fire until Anita makes her lame excuse.  Then BAM, another tape surfaces which makes her lame excuse even lamer (if that is even possible).  Just a thought.

I'm sure that all of this..

Beck played a LOT of it

He played a lot of her wordy, discursive Mao thing--the woman is also no speechwriter--but context there was, aplenty!  Mao was one of her favorite philosophers because he said "fight your own war." Didn't Winnie the Pooh, Yoda, and thousands of other people say this sort of thing? Why Mao? It seems like it would be harder to explain following the lead of Atwater to Obama's base than Mao.

It won't matter if another million tapes come out..

The MSM...NONE of them, have picked up what Beck is putting out. WE all are just preaching to the choir.

Preaching to the Choir

Indeed, that is what the MSM is banking on, that ignoring things still works like "it never happened."

Despite the high cable ratings of FOX and Beck, it's still just a fraction of those who still watch only the MSM networks, read only the MSM press, and never go to Drudge or WND.

The MSM still controls the room, but Beck's monkey wrenches are definitely having an effect.  I think a breakthrough is coming.

Who ya gonna believe, me or yer lying eyes?

It certainly seems that she considers Chairman Mao's writings to be an inspirational experience and not just a joke as she now claims.

That's as far as I could stand to watch the video, just up to the Mao quote. Good Lord woman, that is a disgusting little quirk ya got there.

I've seen others propose that her quirk is due to medications like thorzine or haldol but I think the most likely cause for the slathering lip smacking is a bad case of numb gum from that huge line of coke she tooted before the speech. No self respecting liberal is going use psychotropic medication, it could change their perspective. Cocain....cocain is fine.

Lying?

Who is/was she lying too? Her audience that day or now? It would be interesting to ask one of her audience members.

  I wonder why Ms. Dunn

I wonder why Ms. Dunn admires Mao because he overcame incredible odds to win a war?

Didn't the name of George Washington and his fight against a world superpower with only a ragtag band of farmers and shop keepers ever pop into her mind?

George Washington?? .... Pfffttbb!!

And liberals wonder why we call them communists, socialists, etc.?

If the shoe fits...

Overlooked in all of this is that she says she was sourcing her quote from the evil Lee Atwater.  How does she explain that?

Dunn

Dunn is just another in the long line of anti-American ideologues going back at least 50 years. Many years ago I got a graduate degree from a state university in N.Y. It took two years, part time. Every week I had to sit and listen to the crap drivelling from their lips. It made a great impression on me. Now they and their indoctrinated fellow travellers ( including Obama) are in charge. I pray that we get through this --just as I had to some time ago.

Thanks for the tip

I'll have to work on that.

→ Commies & Nazis

Dunn has every expectation of being warmly embraced by her party.  She need only look to George Soros, who sold Jews to the Nazis during WWII.

If ever there was proof that a human being can sell his soul to the devil in exchange for unfathomable riches, that proof beats within the breast of George Soros.

Dunn better be

Dunn better be careful.

If she goes around bad mouthing Mao, she will get in trouble with the President.

You got it!!

And there is the "AH HA!!" moment of this, where you can tell that Anita Dunn is trying oh so desperately to cover her tracks.

So not only does she display true cognitive dissonance by circling around the fact that she herself claimed Mao to be one of her favorite political philosophers, which Atwater never did, but also she goes as far as asking for forgiveness from the left for supposedly borrowing a quote (which, of course, she did not quote Atwater, only Mao) from a conservative?

According to her, she was just following in the footsteps of conservatives, and now she feels dirty because of it and hopes her friends won't hold it against her for playing with the diiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrty eeeeeeevvvvvvvil conservatives.

Don't worry Anita, I'm sure you'll be forgiven...but NOT by the citizens of the U.S. that care about our nation.

We won't forgive and we won't forget.

Oh, and the irony?

One last thing...

The "irony" she tried to pawn off was meant for the juxtaposition between Mao and Mother Theresa.

Saying that calling Mao one of her favorite political philosophers was supposed to be ironic makes NO SENSE and is and INSULT to the intelligence of anyone that is paying attention.

When I first heard this

When I first heard this quote, I thought that Beck may be on to something. On further reflection, I think this is a case of psuedo- intellectual pandering to an academic audience. "Look how clever I am by melding two seeming disjointed philosophical thoughts into one". It is this kind of nonsense that has crippled our higher instutitions of learning; paralyzed by empty-headed reasoning such as the drivle spouted by Dunn. How this woman rose to the be the communication director of any public or private agency only proves how the government strives to reach the lowest common denominator in our society. FNC should be thankful to have enemies this inept.

Anita Dunn(ce)

Atwater would have filleted Dunn for such a lame attempt to use his quotes against him.  But of course, he's dead.  How convenient.  I guess Karl Rove can rest easy knowing that after he's long gone, liberal hacks will be using his quotes to burnish their Communist credentials too.

One can only step back

One can only step back and marvel at the Right's creative talents.  Nothing in the long sweep of human history can match its remarkable ability to dig up a tiny clod of dirt and make it into a mountain of mud to sling.

For heaven's sake, the lady mentioned Mao Tse Tung.  Does it therefore follow Anita Dunn is a communist revolutionary who advocates the murder of millions?  I guess so if you're Glen Beck and hellbent on scaring the pants off your audience with the ludicrous spectre of its government having been seized by a Marxist cabal.

Dunn's "irony" was most likely related to the odd juxtaposition of the historical figures she referenced:  Mao and Mother Teresa--the polar opposite "political philosophers" she turned to when illustrating a single point concerning choices in life and how we confront them and respond.  That's all folks.

The real irony is that so many are willing to buy into Beck's dangerous fantasies.

So you're already mounting David Duke's defense?

I think it's possible that a large reason liberals draw a distinction between Mao and Hitler is that Mao killed yellow people, and Hitler hit a little closer to home.

Mao is in a galaxy far away from Hitler to America.  Liberals just realize Mao is a spoonful America isn't as uniquely oriented to as Hitler.

Cool Arrow...

The first part of my response will be transcribed in Cool Arrowese:

So you're excusing Ralph Reed?  Well at least you admit it.

The second part will be the more traditional reply:

It's not surprising that a racial angle is shoehorned into the debate.  You usually manage to insert it--without regard to topic or relevancy--in a transparent effort to reverse the deal from the race card deck.  Frankly Cool, your theory would be better addressed to one who draws such distinction.  I would surmise it might have something to do with the fact that the mass atrocities of Mao came to light over a protracted period of time and thus seeped more slowly into the national consciousness, whereas the liberation of Hitler's death camps with all of the attendant horrific revelations was a more immediate and overwhelming shock to the American psyche.

Jer

You would admit that we are well awary of mao's atrocities by now.

You would also have to agree that someone so high up in the administration should know better?

Counselor, You obviously

Counselor,

You obviously did not listen to the clip of Anita Dunn very closely, or, you did not listen.  Dunn clearly identified Mao as one of her two favorite political philosophers.

Do you believe that people in general and Anita Dunn in particular, disagree with the central positions of their favorite philosphers?  If not, then you must concede Dunn is a marxist.

NL...

I listened as best I could.  The sound kept breaking up, but I believe I heard all of the relevant remarks.  In any event, it appeared to correspond with the printed quotes.

Yes, I believe people in general agree with the central positions of their favorite philosophers.  But that answer is not unqualified.  For example, Ronald Reagan is my favorite president, but, as a Democrat, it should come as no surprise that there are a number of his political/philosophical positons with which I vigorously disagree.  Newt Gingrich once commented that FDR was his favorite [or maybe the "best"] president of the twentieth century, but I'm confident Newt's views are at odds with much if not all of Roosevelt's political philosophy.

Dunn worked for three Democratic senators:  John Glenn, Bill Bradley, and Evan Bayh.  To the best of my knowledge, none of the three has ever been accused of being a fire-eating leftist.  I just don't see Anita Dunn as some sort of commie ideologue running around with Mao's 'Little Red Book' in hand spouting revolutionary maxims.

Jer

How utterly dishonest has Jer become?

dishonesty:  I listened as best I could. The video is all over the internet. You want to make multiple denunciations, take 5 minutes out of your day and watch. It is very very clear.

dishonesty: it appeared to correspond with the printed quotes. The word is transcript. Yes, the transcripts are all over the internet. You can read the transcipt as you play the video. So what is there to appear?

dishonesty: I believe people in general agree with the central positions of their favorite philosophers We are not talking about crossing the aisle to admire an American of the other political party. We are talking about espousing a man directly responsible for the death of 40 million people in front of impressionable High School students.

Red Herring: Dunn worked for three Democratic senators And? What does that have to do with the price of gas in China? No one is saying her boss gave her the idea of espousing a man directly responsible for the death of 40 million people in front of impressionable High School students.

Spin: Dunn worked for three Democratic senators Now where did you get that little factoid? Her favorite philosophers quote can't stand on it's own? No, we have to bring her biography in now?

More Red Herring: I just don't see Anita Dunn as some sort of commie ideologue running around with Mao's 'Little Red Book' in hand spouting revolutionary maxims.  This is the standard now? We have to wait until someone runs around with Mao's 'Little Red Book'  before we can denounce what was said in one of their speeches.

Why don't you just admit it now Jer. You are now a democratic operative, openly carrying democratic water by downplaying, distorting, belittliing, spinning, or otherwise deriding anything any democrat opposes.

Here is the sad part. You are not even good at it. Go back to your day job.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

dishonesty:  I listened as best I could.

Dishonesty?  That is beyond lame, JWF.  It's a completely unwarranted personal attack for which you should apologize immediately.  I watched and listened to the clip posted in the blog.  The video [and audio] would freeze momentarily at two or three junctures and then continue.  I'm confident I heard everything that Dunn said which is the subject of scrutiny here, since it matched up with the posted quoted remarks.  If it hadn't corresponded with the partial transcript, I would have tried other video clips posted elsewhere.  In other words, I was being completely candid.

If you have no intention of apologizing then don't even bother responding, because there will be no further dialogue with me.  Otherwise, I'll be more than happy to carry on with the discussion.

What?

Not gonna give me until Thursday at 12:27 PM Tokyo time like last time?

By the way, speaking of dishonesty, once again Uncle Jer goes for the low fruit hanging from the tree. The main point, the meat and potatoes was this -  We are talking about espousing a man directly responsible for the death of 40 million people in front of impressionable High School students. Notice how I bolded it for you and everything?

So there is Uncle Jer, surrounded by a sea of blood and dead bodies resulting from Mao's atrocities, complaining about the speck of fly poop on his jacket.

Hey boys and girls, I have an imitation for you. I just learned it. who am I. Ready. Go -------

Apologise! Apologise! Apologise now! Braaaccck!

No, I was not Uncle Jer, I was the parrot on Uncle Jer's shoulder.

JWF...

Look, if you'll just calm down with the "dishonesty" claims you don't need to apologize and I'll address this further with you.  Right now I'm waiting for a guy to come over and help me with a couple of computer problems, so I need to sign off for a while.

Jer

→ Technical difficulties?

I remember wishing the announcer would say "The problem is with your set... Please adjust your set"

Give me immortality, or give me death - firesign

.

whoops. wrong place.

Uncle Jer - troll?

Dunn worked for three Democratic senators:  John Glenn, Bill Bradley, and Evan Bayh.

Again. What does this have to do with the price of gas in China? She did not make the statement while working for any of her previous employers. She made the statement while in the employ of the United States government, as an unelected advisor to the President of the United States.

It is odd that Uncle Jer would go to bat defending this statement that can be fully verified. Yet, he calls Rush Limbaugh a hater when false quotations are thrown at him.

See above.  Same

See above.  Same response.

Second verse, same as the first...

Little Jer Wagon

(spoken rhythmically, starting quietly, each verse louder then the one before)

You can't play with my little Jer wagon.
The axle's broken and the wheels are saggin'.

Second verse, same as the first,
A little bit louder and a little bit worse.
You can't play with my little Jer wagon.
The axle's broken and the wheels are saggin'.

Third verse, same as the first,
A little bit louder and a little bit worse.
You can't play with my little Jer wagon.
The axle's broken and the wheels are saggin'.

Jer, Jer, Jer

I have not hear Beck's take on this. I have only seen the vid of Dunn. It is obvious that she respects mao as some sort of philosophical master. You trying to cover for her makes you look bad. The 0 is going to throw her under the bus soon. Best to keep your distance.

"If the man, with the power, can't keep it under control...some heads are gonna roll." -Judas Priest

Restless...

If I'd known you were still up, I would have responded to you first.  I don't think Dunn is done.  At least not yet...not if this is all there is.  She could have phrased her remarks differently and better, but unless they have her signing some stupid petition like Van Jones, or can come up with some other smoking gun, I don't think she is going anywhere.

G'night...

Jer

Jer, you never told us you

Jer, you never told us you were a professional contorsionist.

Know how to keep a Troll in suspense?  Ill tell ya in the morning.

Well, Dan...

Well, Dan...that's because I don't get paid for it.

Jer

OOPS

Dunn accurately states the position of the Obama Administration vis-a-vie Maoism. But the dumb Biotch stated it in public, it's supposed to be covered up even as it's implimented you know. She's history. I just can't wait for Hilarious to challenge "the one" for the nomination in '12, THAT convention will be fun to watch.

"The use of the phrase

"The use of the phrase 'favorite political philosophers' was intended as irony, but clearly the effort fell flat -- at least with a certain Fox commentator whose sense of irony may be missing."

This speech was delivered to high school students, and we all know how adept they are at picking up on irony.

You almost have to feel bad for the radicals...

They actually think that we believe them...She apparently did not get her dosage on the meds correct...hence the dry mouth serpent tongue thing going on....oh now she can quote me and say it was the medication...my bad.
