Perhaps the PBS Nova producers should have consulted the Naked Archaeologist or The Bible as History before making a show whose purpose is to debunk the Old Testament. Here is the description of the special two hour edition of Nova as reported by Reuters/Hollywood Reporter:
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Bill Maher, on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher," frequently refers to the Old Testament of the Bible as the Book of Jewish Fairy Tales. The description might anger the pious and the fundamentalists, but guess what? Maher's close to the truth.
A visually stunning two-hour special edition of "Nova" examines decades of archaeological studies that contradict much of what is in the Bible. The entire Exodus story is debunked, as is the idea that the Israelites were monotheistic following the contract made between God and Abraham. It turns out idol worship was common through the reign of King David and right up to the Babylonian exile.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Is the Bible the word of God? Only if God dictated it to dozens, maybe hundreds, of different writers, each of whom wrote and modified stories using different patterns of language over a period of centuries.
To be sure, writer-producer-director Gary Glassman does not dismiss the Old Testament as a collection of fairy tales. He asserts that the stories, though provably false in many cases, were intended to give identity to the Israelites, a group likely made up of former Canaanites, nomads and runaway slaves. Also, the Bible provided the Israelites with a moral framework.
The special, narrated by Liev Schreiber, is not likely to sit well with those who believe that the Bible, despite its internal inconsistencies, should be interpreted literally. Then again, science and religion have had a long history of conflict until, ultimately, the former prevails.
Your humble correspondent is no Biblical scholar (unlike my DUmmie FUnnies co-conspirator, Charles Henrickson, who is a Lutheran pastor fluent in several ancient languages) but even I know that the Old Testament clearly shows that a ticked off Moses smashed the first set of the Ten Commandents (or Fifteen Commandments according to "History of the World Part I") after his flock regressed to idol worship of the golden calf during the time he climbed up Mt. Sinai. Perhaps my time frame is off but I do believe this occured after the contract between God and Abraham.
In any event, what's with the latest wave of attempts to debunk the Bible? Recently we had Bill Maher's Religulous in movie theaters and now this attempt to prove the Bible historically incorrect by PBS's Nova. It's not that they are just trying to impartially analyze the Bible but they are taking positive glee in trying to prove it wrong. Of course, such an effort is "safe." One wonders if they would ever have the guts to attempt the same thing on the Koran.

November 17, 2008 - 09:24 ET by KC MulvilleI'm not a fundamentalist, so I don't worry about these kinds of reports very much. However, the need to debunk the Bible, while certainly not new, is part of a wave of anti-Christian, anti-religious programs. I don't get my religion from the media, so I don't usually catch the opposition. But lately we've seen the atheist community trying very hard to promote their agenda.
On the one hand, it's a free country. We promote ours. I suppose we can't be surprised if atheists promote theirs.
But Nova is part of PBS, and we pay for that. Why should I pay for atheists to promote their agenda? I mean, never mind my taxes, the fundraising drives always suggest that if I give them $50 or $200, I'll be helping to create programs with Andrea Bocelli or the Celtic Women ... instead, they go to Bill Moyers, this atheist stuff, and pro-abortion documentaries.
Public television makes no sense. End it.

November 17, 2008 - 09:28 ET by motherbeltI agree, KC...if PBS can't use taxpayer money to support my religion, why should they be allowed to use taxpayer money to trash it?
And you're right: their whole premise is long redundant.
"If PBS doesn't do it, who will?"
Uh, everyone.
Not atheists really. They worship something else...
November 17, 2008 - 10:57 ET by UnsaneI suspect that Maher and many of the clowns on PBS aren't really atheists. They DO have a God: The State. And they worship it faithfully and are extremely angry that not all of us are as devoted to The State as they are.
Oh, and absolutely we need to 100% de-fund PBS. Isn't it funny how they are funded by the federal government yet hold fundraisers and fund drives every year, sometimes multiple times a year? (Can they take some of the profits of their products that genuinely are successful and popular and plow them back into PBS? Nah. Why should they when Uncle Sugar constantly babies them?)
The last time I watched PBS was when they decided to show a great National Geographic documentary on Air Force One. But that was back in 2001.

It's time we privatize PBS and NPR
November 17, 2008 - 12:54 ET by Mary Louise TurnerYes, it's "tin cup" time at our local PBS affiliate, again. These are the same clowns who beg us for dollars month after month with tacky fund-raising, and yet get millions of dollars from Uncle Sam.
It's long past time to pull the plug on public money for PBS and its evil twin NPR. This is especially important in light of its long history of extreme liberalism. Listen to NPR for a few minutes and you know that it's hostile territory for conservatives.
Further food for thought
November 17, 2008 - 16:34 ET by UnsaneThe one and only time PBS ever breaks out stuff worth watching these days by Leftists and Rightists alike happens during "tin cup" time (to borrow your elegant phrase!). Ever notice? Like back in 2000...I was geeked to see that the local affiliate showed a repackaged version of the Cosmos series that I first saw when I was nine and eventually led me to an obsessive devotion (one of many) to astronomy. Of course, it was repeatedly interrupted by pleas to fill the tin cup, much to my extreme aggravation.
I might be obliged to fill it if they got of the government tit, and decided to show GOOD programs that at least pretend to be objective. Til then...

Here is some sound advice
November 18, 2008 - 15:03 ET by NazarethHere is some sound advice for Bill and PBS from Solomon and bible commentator Gill- not that Bill and PBS will understand a lick of it- but here it is incase Bill or PBS happen to read this thread lol- but hwo knows, perhaps they'll choose to put away childish htigns and actually try to attain maturity:
Ecc 1:18 - For in much wisdom is much grief,.... In getting it, and losing it when it is gotten: or "indignation" (t), at himself and others; being more sensible of the follies and weakness of human nature;
and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow: for, the more he knows, the more he would know, and is more eager after it, and puts himself to more pains and trouble to acquire it; and hereby becomes more and more sensible of his own ignorance; and of the difficulty of attaining the knowledge he would come at; and of the insufficiency of it to make him easy and happy: and besides, the more knowledge he has, the more envy it draws upon him from others, who set themselves to oppose him, and detract from his character; in short, this is the sum of all human knowledge and wisdom, attained to in the highest degree; instead of making men comfortable and happy, it is found to be mere vanity, to cause vexation and disquietude of mind, and to promote grief and sorrow. There is indeed wisdom and knowledge opposite to this, and infinitely more excellent, and which, the more it is increased, the more joy and comfort it brings; and this is wisdom in the hidden part; a spiritual and experimental knowledge of Christ, and of God in Christ, and of divine and evangelical truths; but short of this knowledge there is no true peace, comfort, and happiness.

God did not dictate stories to writers. He inspired them to write. They wrote in their own language patterns, and according to the style of the times in which they lived.

Where's the attribution?
November 17, 2008 - 09:53 ET by BettendorWhat bugs me in this story is not so much the special that "debunks" what's in the Bible (I'm used to seeing it, and I accept that it will always be there because that's the way the world is, my tax dollars supporting it notwithstanding).
What bugs me initially is the Hollywood Reporter article itself. What from the start, it say, "Maher's closer to the truth." Where's the attribution? It could have said "according to the makers of a new documentary on the Old Testament" (I use the term "documentary" loosely here) and the story itself would have been okay. But it just comes out and states the filmmakers' points with no attribution, like they are right in their conclusions, no point in arguing otherwise. Pretty sad stuff.
And P.J., you're right. Where's the "documentary" on the Koran's origins, or any other religious text?
Does Anyone Study Anymore?
November 17, 2008 - 10:03 ET by Gothampc"It turns out idol worship was common through the reign of King David and right up to the Babylonian exile."
Have these people even read the text? There are several instances of idol worship mentioned. Solomon's concubines worshipped other gods. Idol worship was one of the reasons for the Babylonian captivity. A major theme in the OT is the Hebrews went after other gods instead of obeying their covenant with Jehovah and the text shows the consequences of that decision.
"Then again, science and religion have had a long history of conflict until, ultimately, the former prevails."
Once again, a very ignorant statement based on someone not having studied the Bible.
A few examples:
When people were thinking the Earth was flat, the Bible said that it was round.
When doctors were bleeding people as a way to prevent disease and wondering why they died, the Bible said that life was in the blood.

Bill Maher
November 17, 2008 - 10:03 ET by jcheneyMy son, who is a Christian and working on his doctorate in film, had some interesting comments on Religulous. I asked for his opinion on it and if he would be posting anything on his blog about it. This is what he said:
"Even though I have no desire to
see it, I wanted to post something about it, and that article I found
provided a good opportunity. It doesn't take a Christian, or a person
of faith, to identify it as fundamentally and completely flawed. It
doesn't hold the status of an "argument," but rather of the cheapest,
most ignorant sort of rhetoric that exists. In the same way that
certain narrative (i.e. non-documentary) films are so bad that you can
give it a review based on the trailer, this film is so intellectually
lacking that viewing it would be giving it a level of acknowledgement
it doesn't deserve. I have great respect for unbelievers who sincerely
struggle with faith and belief and doubt. I want to have conversations
with them and, above all, listen to their concerns. This guy, Bill
Maher, is something else entirely. He deserves no respect, because he
refuses to extend any to us. He is divisive and, ironically, the kind
of person who causes people of faith to be on the defensive, making it
very difficult to have such things as PEACE and COEXISTENCE."

Bill Maher is the biggest, most pompus religious bigot on television today.
What, exactly is his experience with theology? What has he studied to obtain his point of view?
Answer: The inaccurate, hyped, hypocritical, and biased stereotypes of religious folk paraded by atheists, the MSM, and the anti-religious left for eons.
The arguments Maher uses are the same ones used by anti-religious folk two millena. The only difference is the people spouting the ignorant rhetoric have technology that makes their stupidity easily accessible.

These same folks also declare every piece of Archeological evidence that supports there being a King David as being forgeries.
The Old Testament is chocked full of stories of the prophets constantly chastising the nation of Israel and Judah for turning away from GOD and worshiping pagan idols like their 'neighbors". Far from disproving the Bible, it tends to confirm it.

Idol Worship
November 17, 2008 - 10:50 ET by Itty-Bitty-CommitteeIt is rare when the Israelites didn't have idols, high altars, etc. Seriously, G-d constantly punished them for their failing faith. Philistines, Assyrians, Babalonians, etc. all got their chance to humiliate the Israelites.
It reminds me of the faux-outrage when the founder of Jews for Jesus said terrorism may be a punishment from G-d. He always used other tribes and wars to try to get through to the Jews of the Old Testament. It would follow, if you are Jewish, that G-d is still likely to use the same tactic.
Regarding the authenticity, I'm reminded of what my mentor said about it. If there is no compelling reason to read the text another way, then humble yourself and accept it as truth. Cast a skeptical eye and examine for clarity and accuracy, but be mindful that you don't allow pride in your own intellect to cloud your faith. In other words, don't fall in love with your own sense of intelligence, because it can lead to you missing big and small errors.

November 17, 2008 - 11:34 ET by candanceSince when did the Bible claim that most Jews were devout believers in God? Have these people even read the Bible?
Elijah warned of a nationwide drought under King Ahab because most of the people were pagan, and then he gave an open challenge to 400 prophets of Baal before running to escape persecution.
In fact that whole "Babylonian exile" thing happened because the Jews were pagan.

8And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

The damage they will do and the people they will lead astray by their ignorant statements will all be added to their list of offenses for which they will be held accountable and have to pay for for eternity.
If Bill and PBS REALLY cared abotu finding the truth, they would be blown away by the accuracy of hte bible, and discover that the bible, written over many centuries by many different individuals, all working 'in the spirit' translating God's own word, is so concise and acccurate that no other book in history can match it's authenticity and preciseness.
As well- Bill and PBS obviously choose to ignore that ALL of the 600 or so prophesies and to be specific, the 60 or so prophesies concerning Christ Himself, came 100% true- At best- a psychic can only get around 40% of their 'predictions' and visions correct. Can Bill Maher and PBS explain that away too? No- I didn't think so- they'd much rather just bask in their own 'intellect' by taking only the more vague and obscure portions of biblical history and trying to rip those apart by using petty moot word anomylies as their basis of 'evidence', but htere again- had they chose to actually do any indepth investigations, they would discover that htese annomylies are not what they first appear to be, and that the passages that they childishly take out of context make perfect sense when rendered correctly and in context.
Bill and PBS are nothign but petty little children stomping hteir feet with their hands over hteir ears lest they actually HEAR the word of God and discover the truth. Anyone can make up lies when IGNORING the glaring truth set before them

These people simply have no shame- no sense of self worth, and no scruples at all. When caught in lies, they deny they are caught, and try to cover up their obvious ignorance with one other lie on top of their previous ones- The fool is a shameless person who refuses to acknowledge the truth regardless of how many facts you throw at them disputing their assinine claims

Right off the bat, I'm an agnostic, and believe that any divinity in the Bible can be found in its lessons, not of actual events.
But to refer to these stories as "fairy tales" is definitely insulting. It automatically dismisses these lessons as childish and naive. Once again, our publically-supported leftists are heaping scorn on the Judeo-Christian community.
And I'm holding my breath, waiting for these intrepid scholars to call the Koran "fairy tales". I bet they're working on this piece as we speak.

"Fairy Tale" this: Woe
November 17, 2008 - 15:49 ET by vrwc1320 Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
and clever in their own sight.
22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine
and champions at mixing drinks,
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
but deny justice to the innocent.
24 Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw
and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay
and their flowers blow away like dust;
for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty
and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 5

God's Woe: you don't want to know
Right on!
November 17, 2008 - 16:07 ET by I want my country back“Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” (Galatians 6:7, NLT)
...also, I was thinking:
November 17, 2008 - 21:00 ET by msh1973...also, I was thinking: Galatians 6:7 "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap". I am just sayin.
That's why I was going on
November 17, 2008 - 15:21 ET by BettendorThat's why I was going on about the lack of attribution there. He attributes to someone connected to the filmming or PBS, and he is for the most part in the clear, having told the story. He then allows the filmmakers to be celebrated or hung by their own words and claims, rather than him making the claim.
Bill Maher is one ugly
November 17, 2008 - 20:38 ET by semolina_filcherBill Maher is one ugly agnostic, atheist or whatever he claims his religion is. Further hyping him and his take on issues is really just giving him the attention he craves. Ignore him and the rest of these celebretards and they go away.....
BTW, has anyone in their right minds seen his movie "Religiousity"? Nein.
Save Oscar the Grouch, burn everything else.
November 17, 2008 - 20:47 ET by R D HelmThe formerly conservative Republican Party had its chance to completely de-fund the Proletariat Broadcasting Service, but when push came to shove, they did what they do best:
They whiffed.
Now that the Social Democrats are in charge, I bet PBS's budget is probably going to double, if not triple, and should the vote be a tie in the Senate, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if McCain was to cast the tie-breaking vote - in favor of PBS.

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?
What would God the Almighty,
November 17, 2008 - 21:02 ET by semolina_filcherWhat would God the Almighty, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, the Omnipotent One, the Creator of the Universe, and the Father of us all, say to one measly creature named bill maher when he stands before Him, on Judgment Day?
One can only wonder....
Unfortunately, we have a good idea.
November 19, 2008 - 12:56 ET by Mike BrattonIf things remain the same with him, God's response to Bill (and to the chagrin of Maher's agent) will be along the lines of, "Depart from me, I never knew you."
Let's hope and pray that things don't remain the same with Bill.
