NBC's Matt Lauer Almost Calls Him David 'Betray Us'

Remember back in September 2007 when the far-left MoveOn.org created a firestorm with an ad placed at the New York Times headlined "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"

NBC's Matt Lauer apparently does, for on Monday's Today show, he asked guest Newt Gingrich, "Did David Betray, Petraeus do the right thing by resigning?" (video follows with commentary):

For those that have forgotten, here's part of what MoveOn.org placed at the Times:

It has indeed been fascinating watching liberals in out of the media that excoriated Petraeus for telling Congress in September 2007 the troop surge in Iraq was working now vehemently defend him over his recent revelation regarding an extra-marital affair.

One such detractor was then Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) who accused the General of lying during her questioning of him saying, "Despite what I view is your rather extraordinary efforts in your testimony both yesterday and today, I think that the reports that you provide to us really require a willing suspension of disbelief."

Weeks later when the Senate voted to condemn the ad, Clinton was amongst the minority that didn't support the resolution.

I bet you haven't heard anything about that in recent days, have you?

Back then, Michael Kinsley also supported the ad as did former MSNBCer Keith Olbermann. Olbermann's former colleague Chris Matthews parroted the ad accusing Bush of "betrayal."

Meanwhile, Lauer's own program ignored the Democrat embarrassment surrounding the MoveOn piece.

Now, more than five years later, Lauer made a bit of a Freudian slip almost calling the general "Betray Us."

I guess he like most of his colleagues forgot the "betrayal" occurred when Bush was president.
