Morgan Freeman: There Is a ‘Great Attempt’ to ‘Disenfranchise’ Women, Hispanic and Black Voters
As NewsBusters previously reported, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman said Tuesday, "We’re going to be in a lot of trouble if we don't reelect [Barack Obama] because people on the other side of the fence scare me."
In the second part of his Tavis Smiley Show interview aired Wednesday on PBS Freeman said, "Women, Hispanics, blacks, there is a large attempt, a great attempt, at disenfranchisement" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
TAVIS SMILEY, HOST: You were saying last night at the end of the conversation that you’re a bit frightened, scared was your exact word, of the other side if we do not reelect Barack Obama.
MORGAN FREEMAN: Yeah. One case in point, if you look at the attempts to disenfranchise minority voters - I use the term minority advisedly here because the Hispanic world is growing so fast that in no time at all, I expect that they will be in the majority. But my point is that women, Hispanics, blacks, there is a large attempt, a great attempt, at disenfranchisement. I mean, it’s right out in the open. I’m not, you know, this isn’t like breaking news or anything. Why is that?
SMILEY: Well, they would argue voter fraud.
FREEMAN: Yeah, but of all the people who are talking against that asked for proof, and how much has been arrived?
SMILEY: Precious little.
FREEMAN: Precious little.
Precious litte?
What liberal media members have been ignoring for months as they spread demonstrably false propaganda about Republicans trying to suppress minority votes with measures to prevent voter fraud is that following all of the claims by Democrats of such in the 2004 elections, and all of the problems in the 2000 elections, a Commission on Federal Election Reform was created in 2005 led by former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker.
One of their recommendations was a voter ID much like many states are now proposing.
As such, it is shear nonsense that there is little incidence of voter fraud in this country, and a shameful canard that trying to prevent it represents an attempt at suppression or disenfranchisement.
But Freeman wasn't finished:
FREEMAN: So, that isn’t quite it. It can't possibly be quite it. It has to be that they know that this group is going to be pretty firmly in the camp of Barack Obama. I certainly will, and not only because he is doing a good job, I think, as president, but because his enemies are, they’re stepping out of closets. You know, they’re wide open. Somebody is going to spend 10 billion, no $10 million…
SMILEY: And more.
FREEMAN: …I'm just talking about on one commercial…
SMILEY: Yeah.
FREEMAN: …to downgrade you because they got the money. Brings up that other question about is the country for sale.
Where was Freeman in 2008 when presidential candidate Barack Obama spent more money to buy his victory than anyone in American history? And where was he when Obama spent more money than any other candidate in history on negative ads?
No, that was just fine in 2008 when the candidate Freeman supported did such things.
But now that it appears the worm has turned and it will be Republicans spending more money this cycle, it's just awful.
Funny how that works.

Again, Asians are absent in their arguments against voter id laws. I'm not here to play the race card as well but I find it amusing that they always leave this gaping hole in who they claim to be standing up for.
Also, I really wish Freeman would shut up. I'm looking forward to seeing The Dark Knight Returns and don't want to miss it because of Freeman's continued political ignorance.

Obama is going to lose not because of his skin color,(he is half white remember) but because of his policies. He is the most radical president ever to hold office since the founding of this country. November can't come soon enough Too bad we have to wait until January until he is finally done.

Classic liberal straw man argument. Everything with these libs is having to do with something they contend is "going to happen". Never any evidence. Nothing they can point to in the here and now. Always a murky, vague, accusation. (Evangelicals? It's always about what "might" happen if they win office)
But we know what HAS HAPPENED with voter fraud! We point to something that exists already, like a flat-out criminal enterprise like an ACORN. They have nothing concrete to point to.
Here' s the deal Morgan; Barabbus votes Republican. Freeman votes Democrat. We cancel out each others vote. Fine. But Morgan wants it so that after we cancel each other's vote, then he puts his guy over the top with a vote from somebody who snuck in last year from Guatemala. LISTEN! I AIN'T GIVING UP MY VOTE! IT'S ALL I GOT DAMN IT! And I'm not letting clowns like these two steal it anymore, just because they got used to it! I want it stopped. Like today!

As a matter of fact, last time I went to DMV, most of the employees there were minorities, so it would seem that minorities actually control the means of getting a valid ID card, no?
Funny how we see Morgan, rich beyond his dreams, and Tavis, who is likely very well off, speaking of how the white man is still keeping them down...on national TV.

Morgan, there are more people that don't bother to register to vote than those that do.
The vast majority of Americans have "disenfranchized" themselves for any number of reasons. Many hold to the opinion of "why bother voting when the politicians will do whatever they want anyway?"
If Morgan put his money where his mouth is he would go out on the trail to convince those self disenfranchized voters that it is for their self intererst to get involved in the political process by registering. But then he would only be half way there. He would have to call, coax, cajole and beg this majority of non voters to go to the polls. Once there they won't know who to vote for since they haven't bothered to familarize themselves with the issues nor know the positions taken by the candidates on those issues.
The vast majority of the self disenfranchized wouldn't even know the difference between a US senator and a state senator; not know the thrust of the very first article of the Constitution. Not have a clue that the very first sentence gives all legislative powers only to congress and not to the courts or to the president. I would bet that Mr. Morgan would fail that test up against an educated and informed 5th grader as would Mr. Tavis Smiley. http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html#A1Sec1
I don't expect either of these gentlemen will be facing the Smiley camers any time soon to speak words to the effect that they are not smarter than a 5th grade Republican.

He really needs to be more specific here. Too bad there wasn't a professional interviewer around to ask him.
If he's talking about voter ID laws, I'd say he's making a racist and misogynistic statement. Does he think women and minorities are too stupid and lazy to figure out how to go get a free ID? It's a disgusting mindset for him to have. Probably why Smiley didn't ask the follow up. He knows what Freeman meant and he knows it's better for his side to leave that unsaid.

Does he not sound and act paranoid? Speaking of his ''acting'', in my opinion he's a one trick pony. Every performance i've seen of him he has the same emotionless demeanor. Just give him the lines and he recites them in that boring, monotone voice of his. It worked for him in Shawshank Redemption because that was the typical demeanor of a lifelong convict who had lost all hope. Just take that performance and apply it to every one of his roles. I really wish these Hollywood ''actors'' and musicians (you know, the 'artsy type') would keep their pie-holes shut when it comes to politics, because it makes me not want to buy their movies or albums. This interview to me looks like a conversation 2 black men would be having in private behing closed doors with a hidden camera on them. ''Hey Travis, wouldn't you love to smack the white right off that honkey Romney's face?'' ......''Damn straight homie!...Them crackers think thay's gonna beat our boy Barack but dem whities sure 'nuff gonna get smacked down!''.....''Word Trav, word!".....

But when it comes to politics, Morgan offers "precious little." He speaks about disenfranchise minority voters, but then goes on to include women, Hispanics and blacks - that's a majority of Americans and no political party has the power to disenfranchise them at the ballot.
Morgan Freeman is one of the very few leftist actors/actresses that I'm willing to pay to see. I believe it's a mistake for anyone in the entertainment industry to express condemnation of Americans who disagree progressive agenda. Why pay money to an industry filled with people who attack your political beliefs?
At least Freeman's rhetoric is far less inflaming than Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, etc. But, I for one wish he spent more time narrating "Through the Wormhole" and acting versus speaking on political issues which are far above his pay-grade.

I refuse to believe that this "disenfranchisement" accusation against the GOP by the left and their media is anything but a narrative they have purposely created to convince the average nonpolitical person that the GOP is really up to no good. They can't actually believe that showing a picture ID or eliminating unqualified people from the voter rolls constitutes disenfranchisement. It's all an act. If you want to vote, get your ass to the polls, bring a photo ID (like the one you use to get your other benefits, or like your driver's license which you need to drive or even get on an airplane), cast your vote and be done with it. If you don't want to go and do that, then fine. But quit singing the disenfranchised song, we're really tired of those lyrics.
