CNN's Don Lemon: 'N--ger' Should Replace 'N-word' in News Reports

By Noel Sheppard | April 09, 2012 | 09:53

Noel Sheppard's picture

As NewsBusters reported earlier, CNN national correspondent Susan Candiotti said "f--king n--ger" on the air Easter Sunday.

Less than 24 hours earlier, CNN's Don Lemon advocated "n--ger" be used during news reports rather than the more politically correct "N-word" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

DON LEMON, ANCHOR: But also, to, when someone calls me like, you know, we talked about the racist tweets that I've been getting in people, I'm getting them now, right?

DEAN OBEIDALLAH, CO-FOUNDER, NEW YORK ARAB-AMERICAN COMEDY FESTIVAL: Don.

LEMON: Yeah.

OBEIDALLAH: I apologize.

LEMON: See? That's the thing. People are like apologizing, why, because you're, because what, you're...

OBEIDALLAH: I sent them to you.

LEMON: Because you are too polite. Because you're too politically correct. You are too polite. This is racism free, so why not say it? Don't feel bad for me. That only motivates me to speak the truth, right? Because you can't -- not everyone is going to agree with you.

And when I said, when I said that word, I'm going to say it again, the N-word, I just wish, I hate saying the N-word. I think it takes the value out of what that word ready means, especially when we are reporting it. And I don't care what color the reporter is, I think someone should say, "That person calls someone nigger," instead of saying the N-word, because I think it sanitizes it.

BUCK DAVIS, DIVERSITY EXPERT: Well, and I think, Don, that you confuse white people when you use the word the N-word, because we're going, "If you can use it, why can't we use it?"

LEMON: No, no, no. I don't mean in that context. I'm not talking about on the street. I hate it in music -- listen. Listen. Hang on. I hate it in music. I hate in those kinds of things. I hate one when it's misogynistic 's and rap and all that. But what I'm saying is in the reporting of a story, you should say the word not to sanitize it.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Although many on both sides of the aisle might agree with this - it is, after all, a somewhat arbitrary determination that this word is too offensive to be used by anyone that isn't black - you still have to ask "Why now?"

For decades n--ger was totally unacceptable.

Now, weeks after the shooting of Trayvon Martin - as the media try to fabricate a race war to assist the reelection of Barack Obama - not only are CNN employees saying n--ger on the air, a CNN host is advocating the previously offensive term be used in all reports rather than the politically correct one.

With racial tensions being ginned up by irresponsible so-called journalists, the N-word suddenly "sanitizes" what n--ger "really means."

As NewsBusters asked hours ago, can "the N-word now be used on CNN" if it dramatizes racism?

Lemon certainly thinks so.

Actually, SoL, I was thinking of another, more 'descriptive' term, to use in conjunction with the Lemon Squeezer's preference for using the 'real' N-word. I guess that would make him happy.

Does this nimrod ever discuss anything of value or importance?? It seems like all he talks about are issues that pertain specificaly to him...................of course, that puts him in the same ballpark as his mancrush, Boy Baraka.

Can we really say that word....?

Not if you are a white Republican and that is a fact.
Meanwhile all the Gate Keepers of All things Racial on the left can use it all they want especially if they can make themselves part of the story.
Also let me say that while I do not feel the need to use that word I would never fall for this obvious set up.

They can say it a thousand times and laugh and joke but if Rush Limbaugh said it...it would be the second coming of the Holocaust and they would be leading the charge.

I mean, Holder is lighter skinned than many other African Americans, isn't he?

Perhaps that's the term from which the MSM term "white hispanic" is derived?

I'm all for getting rid of the term "N-word"

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 11:02am.

The pretentious use of the term "N-word" merely empowers the word nigger by those who want to use it, from rap artists to racists.

The constant references to "N-word" have always sounded like adults talking to pre-school children.

As to CNN's motives for the change in N-word protocol, I can only imagine.  But in principle, I approve.

Believe me, I will rarely ever use that phrase, but I'm sick of this "N-word" nonsense. I don't know where it all began, although I know its usage became ubiquitous after the OJ Trial and the Mark Fuhrman controversy. But enough's enough. We know what it means. If the context of the story makes it appropriate, then just use the actual word already! It's getting so absurd that we're now expanding it to other politically incorrect terms like "retarded" which Palin's outburst at Rahm-bo let to it being rebranded the "R-word" and slut which the Sandra Fluke episode led to people referring to it as the "S-word".

Lennie Bruce Routine

Submitted by jbspry on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 10:53am.

Lennie Bruce early '60s:
What did he say? "Are there any niggers here tonight?" Jesus Christ, do you have to get that low for laughs? Have I ever told you about the schwartzer? Or spoke about the moulin john's? Are there any niggers? I know that one nigger that works here I see him back there. Oh there's two niggers, customers. Ah but between those two niggers there's one kike. Thank god for the kike. And two kikes. That's two kikes and three niggers and one spic. One spic, three spics and one mick. One mick one spic one hick, thick, funky, spunky boogie. And there's another kike. Three kikes, three kikes one ginny, one greaseball three greaseballs, two ginny's. One hunky funky lace-curtain Irish mick. Five more niggers. I pass with seven niggers, six spics, five micks, four kikes, three guineas, and one wop. Well, I was just trying to make a point and that is that it's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness. Dig. If President Kennedy would just go on television, and say, "I would like to introduce you to all the niggers in my cabinet," and if he'd just say "nigger nigger nigger nigger nigger" to every nigger he saw, "boogie boogie boogie boogie boogie," "nigger nigger nigger nigger nigger" 'til nigger didn't mean anything any more, then you could never make some 6 year old black kid cry because somebody called him a nigger at school.

(I've always been opposed to "the N word" because it is a simpering, squeamish cowardly way of referring to the word "nigger". That euphemism imputes a power, an almost magical superstitious power, to what is merely a word. Let's all get used to it and stop giving it the destructive power it currently has. It's 2012 folks.)

Lemon's strategy here is to....

Submitted by cbeyer on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 10:52am.

get the media to use the word (as a quote) to further foment race baiting and hatred by referencing white people who use it. Lemon's reasoning here comes from the same place as Obama interjecting himself into the Trayvon case.

The more whites as a group can be portrayed as racists, the more blacks will go to the polls and vote for Obama and democrats. Its a naked campaign strategy that is incredibly transparent.

Speaking of the 'N-word', and

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 11:37am.

Speaking of the 'N-word', and people who like to use it - I see where Boy Baraka's 'mentor', the very white Reverand Wright, gave a fiery Easter speech down int South Carolina yesterday. I read a lot of the text of it - he is still in rare form, comparable to the days when Boy Baraka wasn't hearing him, even though he was sitting right there. And Wright will stand up there and claim that he is NOT being 'racist'. He also issued a broadside against the 'whites' of the world and how they dominate world policy, so I'm just wonderin' (Obamaspeak) if the Chinese are going to take that as a compliment or an insult.................and I guess the South Americans, the Indians, other Asians, and even the mooooooooooooooooooooooooslem power brokers are all considered to be 'white' in the lily-white Rev. Wright's world???

Yet, it was apparently 'acceptable' for decades before that. I can't remember which novel I read recently, perhaps Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile" which had that word. Was there an outcry at the time of publication? or was it accepted usage? Are we to call Dame Christie a racist because she used the term?

It is as offensive to me as a Latino as "spic" or "wetback".

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 12:34pm.

Any racial epithets carry strong offensive undercurrents that no one likes to talk about, yet some parts of minority communities have deemed those disgusting words to be allowable when speaking about each other. That baffles me, considering how difficult the fight was to remove those words from our vocabulary over the years.

I certainly have heard enough "wetback" and "spic" applied to me, and also to my family on occasion. In those instances, I quickly corrected the offender(s) and put them on notice that even from other Latinos those words are simply unacceptable and rude in any context.

It is not just Americans who have a problem with using words like that, but it's only some parts of American minority communities who have the stupidity to perpetuate the use of those words that are so offensive to others in those communities.

Sanitizing offensive words annoys me.

Submitted by TSM on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 2:18pm.

I find the sanitizing of words stupid. I’m especially getting sick of letters sanitizing the offensive words. Pretty soon the substitute letter words will be unacceptable and we’ll have to use some sort of new code words. For example, someday people won’t be allowed to even use the N-word when repeating news…It will be “the letter that comes after M-word.” The same for the “F-word,” the “C-word,” and on and on.
And don’t even get me started on how much I hate the words frick and effing. If you’re not going to use the word they are derived from…then don’t use the sanitized version.

I would never use such

Submitted by eaglescout1998 on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 2:21pm.

I would never use such language while in the presence of polite company.

However, when directly quoting from a source, I would prefer reporters use the actual words rather than substituting them with more politically correct language. George Carlin was right on one thing, at least. Words are completely neutral. It's the context that makes them "good" or "bad." The use of these words are appropriate in the context of quoting a source. Pounding one's first and shouting, "We don't [expletive] torture," not so much.

* The only reason I censored myself is because I am almost certain the cyber censor would have rejected my reply if I hadn't.

Political Correctness Denies Freedom

Submitted by Lex Terrae on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 3:13pm.

For centuries, the word ni??er was a perfectly acceptable word. It was used by important writers and accepted by editors. It has been only since the 1960's when the federal government inveigled itself into states rights and out of state agitators came into political precincts where the only power they had was to disrupt the a priori civil order did things change.

Lyndon Johnson, that consummate exploiter of political winds (and personally and professionally immoral and corrupt man) made it possible for first amendment rights to be taken without so much as a courtroom hearing, never mind any involvement by elected officials or appointed judges hearing the matter on appeal of the merits.

Political correctness is a means for an unelected, self-appointed group to decide what others might say or do without opprobrium directed at the speaker. If one group of people is allowed to use offensive words and another is not, where is freedom? Where the guaranty of the first amendment? For as long as black people are allowed to call each other nigger without regard - and to call others- using terms they believe to be pejorative (peckerwood, cracker, redneck, honkie) - everyone must have the right to use any words without that opprobrium that otherwise would be invoked.

How utterly ridiculous is political correctness?  Have you not read that T. Martin's mother declaimed that Zimmerman must be arrested, tried, and that he must PROVE HIS INNOCENCE?  What total misunderstanding of what the rule of law must mean.

Now those same unelected, self-appointed groups have caused legislators to deem certain crimes 'hate crimes.'  This concept stands on the premise that because some victims belong to certain groups, that  punishment must be more severe. Certainly, all crimes against the person are 'hateful' but none can say that one is more hateful than another because victim or perpetrator belongs to a different group. Would that all black on black crime in America were deemed 'hate crime' and perhaps the scourge would be lessened.

How utterly ridiculous and idiotic the politicization of events and the use of language.

Bru's right liberal plant. His profile says "conservative republican" with a picture of a gun. You might want to ban his butt after clean up.

How about this: trailer that POS airboat up to the Meadowlands and I'll take you on a little "nature tour," just you and me.

Be sure to wear to that sleeveless flannel with your pimply blubbery arms hanging out that I saw on your flickr stream... because we're going to need bait. OK, fat ass?

I'm thinking the reason Lemon want to

Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 9:22pm.

suddenly start using the word is because of it's incendiary nature and the ability to then tie it to conservatives. Not being black, I can't comprehend how the word could be hurtful -to me a word is a word is a word.

It's funny, when I was in the Corps, the terms used to describe white Marines and black Marines were "light green" and "dark green"; leave it to the Corps to always find a way to do the right thing. See, we were all just a shade of green.

So, Don, old buddy, old pal, you wouldn't object, then, if I called you a MiG-15 that just got shot up severely by a F-86 in MiG Alley?
