Cornel West Scolds Al Sharpton: 'Tell the Truth About the White House'

Princeton professor and civil rights activist Cornel West, in an interview with Diverse magazine, had some harsh words for MSNBC's Al Sharpton.

"Tell the truth about the White House":

“Whoever thought that Brother Al wouldn’t be protesting any administration?” asks West, who served as an adviser to Sharpton’s 2004 presidential campaign. “You watch his show on MSNBC and you want to say, ‘Brother Al, you come out of the Black prophetic tradition like me. Tell the truth about the White House,’ but he won’t say a mumbling word.”

West also had some harsh words for Sharpton's MSNBC colleague Melissa Harris-Perry who he brought to Princeton from the University of Chicago:

“I have a love for the sister, but she is a liar, and I hate lying,” says West, adding that Harris-Perry later said on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” that West attacked Obama’s White mother in the interview with Truthdig.com. “I don’t talk about people’s mamas. She’s reinforcing all of the vicious perceptions of me as a racist, and she knows better than that.”

Harris-Perry’s scathing critique, West says, has more to do with the fact that the Center for African American Studies unanimously voted against her when she came up for promotion from associate to full professor, adding that her work was not scholarly enough.

“There's not of lot of academic stuff with her, just a lot of twittering,” says West, who added that her book Sister Citizen, released last year, was “wild and out of control.”

“She’s become the momentary darling of liberals, but I pray for her because she’s in over her head. She’s a fake and a fraud. I was surprised how treacherous the sister was.”

Syracuse University professor and social commentator Boyce Watkins agreed with West:

West had run off the plantation by speaking freely, not as an enemy of the Obama Administration (he campaigned heavily for the president), but as someone who demanded that we give a voice to the voiceless. But when you have 96 percent of the Black vote, there is almost no incentive to do anything for Black people, especially those who are poor or in prison.

It’s much easier to convince Black people to be quiet by using political goons to terrorize any voices of dissent. I can just hear someone at a closed-door meeting making the statement, “The negroes are getting upset, what do we do? Perhaps we should find one of our personal negroes to fight him.”

Well, in full overseer tradition, the Democrats have created well-paid African-American attack dogs willing to defend their actions at any cost. Since Harris-Perry and her friends had no legitimate defense to the critiques of Dr. West, they presumed that it would be easier to simply discredit him. You see, if you kill the messenger, you never have to deal with the message itself.

Harris-Perry allowed herself to be used by the liberal establishment and their media channels to paint Professor West as irrelevant, petty, and ignorant in his critiques.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Watkins concluded:

In the Black community, leading Democrats have learned the dictator lesson well: If we hijack a few figureheads in the Black community and convince them to always speak in support of our agenda, we don’t actually have to do very much for Black people themselves.

It’s much easier to take care of the Head N*gger In Charge (HNIC) than it is to take care of the people they represent – just give them big media guns and have them aim those guns at any of the field negroes who choose to participate in the rebellion. That’s what makes Melissa Harris-Perry so harmful.

Although Watkins didn't address what West said about Sharpton, one could make the same case about the reverend given his claim to 60 Minutes last May.

As Lesley Stahl reported at the time, "Sharpton told us that having a black president is a challenge: if he finds fault with Mr. Obama, he's aiding those who want to destroy him. So he has decided not to criticize the president about anything - even about black unemployment that’s twice the national rate."

Fits Watkins' description to a tee: "In the Black community, leading Democrats have learned the dictator lesson well: If we hijack a few figureheads in the Black community and convince them to always speak in support of our agenda, we don’t actually have to do very much for Black people themselves."

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

I believe that was the Los Angeles Police Department that thumped on ol' Rot-ney, cuz back then Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies went bar hopping;  it was the LAPD that went night clubbing.    :o)

'Course, the dude was always in trouble of one sort or another, so I'm sure the County's Mounties got in some licks somewhere along the line.

WOW! That's scathing!

West and Watkins really slammed the MSNBC plantation. I rarely agree with West, but I think he and Watkins accurately assessed the Dem game regarding race.

But of all the blasting, I found this most curious:

"Harris-Perry’s scathing critique, West says, has more to do with the fact that the Center for African American Studies unanimously voted against her when she came up for promotion from associate to full professor, adding that her work was not scholarly enough."

This is coming from Cornel West, who left Harvard's faculty under a cloud because they accused him of spending all his time cutting a rap CD instead of doing research and writing. So, if West is accusing Harris-Perry of poor scholarship, that's quite a cut.

This is the kind of in-fighting in the Dem special interest groups that they really like to keep out of sight, but in this case, it's surfaced and gotten very ugly.

It'll be interesting to see what MSNBC does with . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 6:03pm.

. . . Sharpton. He doesn't draw that much of an audience, and it's rather embarassing that he owes the IRS $1.6 million while he blasts the rich for not paying their fair share.

Maybe they can toss him over the side (no pun intended) and hire a real celebrity like Ron Reagan. :-)

Harris-Perry's colleagues thought her work was fluff?

That is just priceless! A collection of circus freaks (masquerading as political science faculty) that Barnum would have given his eye teeth to hire (I'm borrowing that line) thought one of their own was producing less than serious work? She must really be half-wit if she can't convince the Bolshevik Clown Club.

Brother Cornell has his panties in a wad 'cause Brother Al and Sister what-ever-the-hell-her-name-be won't criticize Brother Barack just 'cause Brother Barack is not helping the Brothers and the Sisters enough.

I feel yo pain, Brother Cornell. Brother, congratulations for finally figuring out how your Brother Democrats have been screwing your entire Brother and Sister Race for, what, 100+ years or more!  I have only one question, Brother Cornell.  Brother, what took you so long?  Are you really that stupid, Brother?

If you were smarter, Brother, I guess you would have put "The Reverend" title in front of your name, Brother.  I think that's how The Man designates which of your Brother "N*gger(s)"  is going to be the Brother "Head N*gger In Charge (HNIC)," yo, Brother?

Brother, you really remind me of the punch line of a great joke, where a "Reverend" gets one of the Brothers to stand up and tell an awful truth in church one Sunday, then says "Brother! ... I don't 'blieve I'd ah told dat!"

What's the matter, Brother?  Do you want to be the Brother "Head N*gger In Charge (HNIC)?"  Start calling yourself Brother, Professor, Reverend Cornell West, PhD, HNIC.  That should cover it all for The Man, Barack.

My Brother ....
