Maher: 'We've Lost 500,000 Public Sector Jobs' Under Obama and 'Added 3.7 Million Private Sector Jobs'

In this week's "Is He Really This Stupid or Just a Bald-Faced Liar" segment, HBO's Bill Maher Friday night once again proved that he is either one of the dumbest people on television or is way too dishonest to have his own show.

On the most recent installment of Real Time, the host emphatically claimed, "We've lost 500,000 public sector jobs since Obama took office and added 3.7 million private sector jobs" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER: We have a little section on our program we’ve call "Dispatches From the Bubble." Show the picture. This is me a few months ago yelling at the bubble. We believe Republicans are in a bubble. And let me show you it, because it’s germane to our conversation, a little bit of Mitch Daniels a couple of weeks ago after the State of the Union address. And this is what I mean about people living in a bubble.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

INDIANA GOVERNOR MITCH DANIELS: He seems to sincerely believe we can build a middle class out of government jobs paid for with borrowed dollars.

(END VIDEO CLIP):

MAHER: Okay, that’s Mitch Daniels saying Obama believes we can build a middle class on government jobs paid for on borrowed dollars. Again, the numbers that came out today, government lost 14,000 jobs. We've added private sector jobs, 270,000. We've lost 500,000 public sector jobs since Obama took office and added 3.7 million private sector jobs. Do you see why I want to scream at that bubble? What is this man talking about? What is that bubble made of? That that does, these are facts. What information doesn't get in there that he has cut many thousands of private sector jobs and added public sector jobs?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

"These are facts. What information doesn't get in there that he has cut many thousands of private sector jobs and added public sector jobs?"

Well, as reported by NewsBusters Friday in response to MSNBCer Martin Bashir's idiotic claim that Obama's increased 3 million private sector jobs since taking office, the actual figure from the Bureau of Labor statitics is a decline of 549,000 since January 2009.

As for Obama cutting 500,000 public sector jobs, the federal government - the only one the president has any control over - has increased workers by 39,000 since January 2009. If you exclude the Post Office - which is shedding jobs due to its own problems - public employment at the federal level is up 149,000.

Where Maher got any of these totally erroneous figures once again shows that he's either intellectually challenged or dishonest.

Or maybe it's both.

Either way, that HBO continues to give him his own show says a lot about their quest for accuracy in reporting.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

It would be a net loss.

And only 500k public sector jobs, while growing the IRS to enforce ObamaCare? That's a laugh. I say we can cut 5 million public sector jobs.

conservative home in Southern California.  Went to college in Oregon (aged 18 -22).  Now a staunch liberal.  His wife was raised by conservative Christians; college converted her to liberalism.

My sister, a few years older than my brother, raised in the same home as my brother, decided on a career change in her late thirties; went to college, in Oregon, and became a teacher.

She is now a rarity - a conservative in the educational system in Oregon.

It appears that propaganda does indeed work well on impressionable youngsters.

Must be something to that business about liberals infesting  being the large majority of "teachers" in the academic ranks of higher education.

You silly puppies--it's not just Maher--the fix is in. The economy has rebounded, all is well, nothing to see here, anyone with economic chops is not needed, even that engineer is probably starting work on Monday...move along, move along. As for Maher, remember all the Playboy Mansion grotto water he has swallowed...and consider the source.

also consider people who given up looking for a job as "employed?" The fact that the libs we are gaining jobs while those people give up and drop out of the search is amazing. I would also like to know where they get the numbers they seem to pull out of the hat. I think they make up some that sound good and then pass them on to their media lapdogs. I love Rush's montage of the talking points of liberals. You can see that they are all on the same page. Not a dime's worth of difference between them. As far as I am concerned, we haven't lost enough public sector jobs. We should start trimming the federal government workers. That bloated bueauracracy could stand to go on a diet. At the very least, cut their salaries and benefit packages. As a taxpayer, I don't recall ever having a say in what they make or receive. It is ludicrous to allow them to continue to vote themselves higher salaries and benefits. If ever something should be given to the American people to vote on, it is the compensation our elected officials receive.

This is all a shell game. The crash escalated the loss of good jobs, replaced by low skill jobs. Total gains or losses mean nothing without context.

Just like the interesting graph on public vs. private pay - across the board, public beats out private, but when you dig a little, you see the highly skilled/educated "spread the wealth around" by getting LESS than their private sector counterparts!

I bet that gives them the warm and fuzzies, NOT!!!

ENOUGH with subsidizing already!!!

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

At Least Do Your Homework Guys

Submitted by Politics and A Beer on Tue, 06/05/2012 - 3:04pm.

Here's a story by US News & World Report that actually supports what Maher was saying:
http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2011/09/02/public-sector-losses-cont...

Remember that public sector includes more than just the federal gov't. It includes state and local gov't jobs as well.

So Maher did his homework, and US News actually puts the number closer to 600,000

As conservatives work towards smaller government, there will be job losses in the public sector. So it's dishonest to support policies that will cause job losses, then blame Obama for unemployment.

At least be honest and understand that shrinking the size of government adds to unemployment, at least in the short run.

& a Beer,

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 06/05/2012 - 3:22pm.

Absolutely. One way the effect could be negated is by not allowing the same bureaucrats that mismanaged the various departments and agencies to make the decision on who to fire and who to keep - plus any restructuring that needs to be done. Many have already proven they can't manage because they have developed high cost-low efficiency departments.

Assuming that we are also talking about public jobs in the states themselves - looking past the point that most state governments got bloated during the last couple of decades due to general prosperity and didn't bother to save for a rainy day (good leadership???) don't you think that the federal government forcing states to match funds and to pay out additional benefits/claims has had an impact on the employing capabilities of the states?

If we are going to lose jobs in order to strengthen and stabilize the core of the economy which was a stated goal of our current POTUS during his campaign; is it better to lose jobs from high cost-low efficiency organizations or from the private sector that is forced by competition (usually) to operate at a much higher level of efficiency?  Besides, the reduction of public sector jobs is usually done by attrition and therefor the impact isn't usually the extreme the media paint (i.e. 5,000 jobs lost) - when the reality is that 5,000 people will be allowed to retire early, won't be replaced when they retire/quit or vacant positions will not be filled.

Done in this manner unemployment may dip (remember the retirees and quitters won't count against unemployment) slightly but with any surge in the private market then there should be no long term issues.

Also, trends mean a lot to the market and a trend that shows stability and faith in the private market is likely to have a stronger effect on the overall health of economy than negative effects of a shrinking public sector.

If you go by when the recession started, rather than when President Obama took office:

After years of strong growth, fed employment drops slightly
June 1, 2012

The government has started to trim its workforce, ending several years of explosive and controversial growth that came at a time when private companies and state and local governments slashed jobs.

Federal employment has fallen for seven months in a row, the longest sustained drop in more than a decade. The decline is tiny: Just 11,600 fewer workers in April compared with a year earlier ...

[...]

Nevertheless, the reversal marks the end of a period of enormous employment growth that spanned the end of George W. Bush's presidency and the start of President Obama's term.

Federal employment grew 13 percent — 250,000 jobs — from the recession's start in December 2007 to a peak last September. During that time, private employment fell 5 percent and state and local governments cut staffs by 2 percent.

[...]

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has proposed cutting the federal workforce by 10 percent. Obama's budget calls for a small increase in federal workers.
