Matthews: Gingrich Is Race-Baiting Calling Obama Food Stamp President - 'He Ought to be Ashamed of Himself'

As NewsBusters previously reported, MSNBC's Chris Matthews has been making the rounds accusing everyone associated with Monday's Republican presidential debate of racism.

On Tuesday's Hardball, the host finished the program by claiming former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was race-baiting by calling Barack Obama The Food Stamp President (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me finish tonight with this. Newt Gingrich has called Barack Obama a Food Stamp President. Food Stamp President. Got it? I thought we were passed all this, didn’t you? You know, the talk about Welfare Queens and phrases like that. Well, you either get the message or you don’t. And if you don’t, there’s no point arguing with you about it. Most people do get the point, meaning most people white and black get the point.

Speaker Gingrich went at Juan Williams last night in that debate in just this vein. He knew what he was doing. Williams could see that saying that black Americans should want jobs not food stamps was insulting. Gingrich then laid into him saying that President Obama had put more Americans on food stamps than any other president. He got a lot of applause for that. Why would saying that get you a big, hearty applause? Because this whole conversation isn’t about poverty, but about race. It’s about a candidate who knows just how to make his point to appeal to a certain kind of voter. I’m talking about Gingrich here.

Again, there’s no point arguing this. You either hear the code being used or you don’t. Someone talking about food stamps, bringing up food stamps, calling a president a Food Stamp President when no one else on the planet is talking about food stamps knows precisely what he’s talking about. It’s about a cartoon, a cartoon that the people getting public assistance are lazy, don’t want to work, and are black. You talk about how low this campaign has gotten, lookee here.

And by the way, next time you’re in Washington, D.C., or any other big urban area, I’ve got an educational trip for you to take. Get up early, earlier than you usually get up, say about 6 or 6:30 in the morning, and drive through the poor parts of town and watch who’s up waiting at the bus stops heading to work. Poor people. A lot of them. A lot of them black. And they’re the hardest working people in the country.

Gingrich is a smart guy. He ought to be ashamed of himself.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

No. The person who ought to be ashamed of himself is Matthews for making this pathetic connection.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting tired of anything anyone says negatively about Barack Obama being called racist.

To begin with, Williams brought this subject up not Gingrich. Does that make him racist?

As for the audience applause, it's because they believe that the economic policies of Barack Obama have failed miserably and are responsible for the tremendous increase in poverty and food stamp usage since he took office. They're pleased to see a candidate have the nerve to point it out, and probably aren't the slightest bit surprised shills like Matthews are annoyed by it.

But what has really been lost in all this discussion about The Food Stamp President - that's right, I said it! - is that a far greater number of white people are on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program than blacks.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, in 2010 35 percent of those receiving food stamps were white; 22 percent were black.

That means that if you did as Matthews asked and went to the poor part of a big urban area early in the morning, you'd be 50 percent more likely to see a white person on food stamps than a black person.

In my adult life seeing people using food stamps at grocery store checkout counters, I've almost only seen white people buying food with them.

As such, it is people like Matthews that are race-baiting when they claim discussing this issue is racist, and folks like him that ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. There are 2 possible scenarios

Submitted by povertypimpin on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 8:54pm.

Matthews either thinks we are racist for simply criticizing the President on the record number of food stamp recipients during his tenure or he thinks that only black people are on welfare. Either way he is a moron.

Welfare is not a problem unique to only one race or ethnicity, however you should mention that white people have a lower welfare usage rate than blacks or hispanics. The reason more whites are on welfare is because they make up over 60% of the population.

What Tingles doesn't seem to realize,

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Wed, 01/18/2012 - 9:43am.

which is no surprise, is that virtually everytime he opens his sewer of a mouth, he identifies HIMSELF as the racist. What IS surprising is that I haven't heard anyone call him on it. If he was black, I could understand (not agree with) an overt sensitivity about perceived racist comments. But this incredible moron continually finds racists every time he looks to the right. If it isn't something he can twist or edit to sound racist, it's a "code" for racism. Watching this psychotic idiot slowly disintegrate is getting to be pure joy. I don't have an ounce of sympathy for such a heinous, hate-filled, venom-spewing piece of garbage. It's almost as good as watching Bathtub-Boy Uberman implode...

Must be "code words" or "dog

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 10:35pm.

Must be "code words" or "dog whistle" politics.

If most people on food stamps are white, how can it be racist to call Obama the "food stamp president"?

Republicans had better find a new system. The wrong people are "getting the message."  Matthews and his ilk seem to be the only ones "getting" it.

This is what they think of us

Submitted by mustango on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 9:12pm.

If only Matthews were some lone crank, but sadly quite a large chunk of this country is right in tune with his way of thinking.

The divide has run too deep; there is no longer any way to reconcile it peacefully. I don't know when it will happen; could be next year, could be some far-off day after all of us reading this today are dead and buried. But someday this will come to a head, and when it does the fight for this country will make the days of "uncivil tone" seem a fond memory.

Well put.

A prognostication, unfortunately, that will someday come to pass because the divide has, indeed, not only run too deep; but is being lengthened and widened on a continual basis by politics as usual.

Not race-baiting, Chris, simply telling the truth

Submitted by TheHistorian on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 9:54pm.

It is a discussion of his POLICIES, and HIS ECONOMY, not his race. I couldn't care less whether Obama is Green and from Mars. His policies have stunk, and the Republicans are finally calling him on it. When are you gonna start, Tingles?

Not surprised. Chris 'thrill

Submitted by Slyrr on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 9:56pm.

Not surprised. Chris 'thrill in his pants' Matthews declared to the world that it was 'his job to make Obama and his administration look good'. He's a paid media whore who would defend Obama, even if he said he wanted to bring back the Nazi gas chambers.

There's still hope for him, if he willingly repents. But given that his livelihood now entirely depends on the quality of his lies in behalf of the Democrats, there's small chance of it.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Racists are everywhere*

Submitted by cajun2 on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 10:32pm.

Newt was talking about the dangers of generations of entitlements to the black community.  Entitlements that have damaged blacks ability to "rise" above the level of poverty, devalue education, no discipline, no values, no work ethic.  He is talking about liberal "solutions" that do not address the real problems.  If you address the real problems in the black community, you are automatically called a racist.

Left Eat Their Own

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 01/18/2012 - 12:03am.

Bill Cosby took fierce fire for his frank public discussions on the Black community. Don't hear him say much nowadays. Imagine what might have happened to Booker T. Washington if he wrote today the following:

"There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs."

Liberal shills like Mathews

Submitted by Reaver on Wed, 01/18/2012 - 12:05am.

Liberal shills like Mathews hate the phrase food stamp president for two main reasons, one it’s factually accurate so they can’t claim it’s a false statement and two it is a devastating political attack because it neatly encapsulates all of Obama’s economic failures. This is why every time someone says it liberals like Mathews will wave their arms, jump up and down and yell racist, racist. Hopping they can intimidate people to stop saying it. The problem with that tactic is that their race card is seriously overdrawn.

WORD ASSOCIATION ... PROJECTION ... and RACISM

Submitted by MCLANTIERE on Wed, 01/18/2012 - 10:23am.

It seems that whenever Chris Matthew hears a term like FOOD STAMPS, he thinks they are "coded words" -- or "dog-whistles".

The REAL problem is Chris Matthews himself ... because whenever he hears terms like FOOD STAMPS -- he immediately thinks of BLACK people.

I grew up in a housing project until I was 21, and my mother a state employee, divorced, and dying of cancer at the age of 61 ... received food stamps.

Hey Chris ... when I head the term FOOD STAMPS ... I almost NEVER think about black people -- except when I hear YOU associate it.

May YOU are the problem Chris Matthews ... whenever YOU hear "food stamps" ... you project the thoughts of your OWN HEART ... and associate the term to black people.

Mr. Mathews seems to not "get it." Do we not have the highest number of Food Stamp recipients ever? Does not the government agency that administers the Food Stamp program advertise for new recipients? I think the race charge by Mr. Mathews tells me more about his "superior" attitude towards minorities than anything Mr. Gingrich said at the debate!
