Gingrich to Juan Williams: 'I Know Among the Politically Correct You Are Not Supposed to Use Facts That Are Uncomfortable'

By Noel Sheppard | January 17, 2012 | 01:34

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich had a rather testy exchange with Fox News's Juan Williams during Monday's debate in South Carolina.

After Williams accused the former Speaker of the House of being racially insensitive when referring to Barack Obama as "The Food Stamp President," Gingrich said, "The fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history. Now, I know among the politically correct you are not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JUAN WILLIAMS, FOX NEWS: Speaker Gingrich, the suggestion you made was about a lack of work ethic, and I gotta tell you my email account, my Twitter account has been inundated with people of all races, who are asking if your comments are not intended to belittle the poor and racial minorities. You saw some of this reaction during your visit to a black church in South Carolina.

[Audience boos]

We saw some of this during your visit to a black church in South Carolina where a woman asked you why you refer to President Obama as The Food Stamp President. It sounds as if you are seeking to belittle people.

[Audience boos]

NEWT GINGRICH: Well, first of all, Juan, the fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history. Now, I know among the politically correct you are not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.

[Audience applause]

Second, you are the one who earlier raised a key point. There's a, the area on I-73 was called by Barack Obama a corridor of shame because of unemployment. Has it improved in three years? No. They haven't built the road, they haven't helped the people, they haven't done anything.

[Audience applause]

So, one last thing. So here's my point. I believe every American of every background has been endowed by their Creator with the right to pursue happiness, and if that makes liberals unhappy, I'm going to continue to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn how to get a better job, and learn some day to own the job.

[Audience applause]

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Despite his likely respect for his former Fox colleague, it was nice to see Gingrich do this.

As NewsBusters has been reporting for months the media are going to constantly bring race into the discussion to assist Obama's reelection.

The folks on MSNBC immediately following this debate basically said all the contestants lost because of racism.

As this is going to be a consistent media theme the next ten months, it is incumbent upon on the candidates to smack this blatant dishonesty down whenever it surfaces.

Juan Williams doesn't know how to be tough on Gingrich

Submitted by lrgon on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 3:24am.

If Juan read a book or knew other than the talking points he's allowed to use on Fox and grew a pair he'd know how to ask the liberal toad Gingrich tough questions.

"Mr. Gingrich...you supported Alvin Toffler who wrote a book called the Third Wave in which the self-described marxist Toffler wanted to see the "death" of the Constitution.

Mr. Gingrich you wrote a forward to one of Toffler's book. Do you, sir, believe as Toffler, that that Constitution must die to make way for what Toffler calls the Third Wave?

Is that one of the reasons you sided with Bill Clinton with GATT since that treaty would be "transformational, (your word) and signing on to the treaty would take a huge portion of US sovereignty and transfer it to the WTO?"

Of course neither Juan nor the others would ever ask that question although Fox color contributor Ann Coulter came close to exposing Newt's ties to the freaky Toffler new agers. http://dailycaller.com/2011/12/07/the-newt-history-you-ought-to-know/

By playing the race card every chance they get, they are setting
race relations back by 2 decades. Most folks are not raciest but
might just change their minds by the time all this crap is over
with.

They don't care. In fact, it's their bread and butter. Only by fomenting racial anger can they improve this "post racial" president's chances for re-election.

"There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do do not want to lose their jobs."

The scary thing

Submitted by HockeyKid on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 8:56am.

about the race card is that it can often be very difficult to overcome, even though it's clearly ridiculous. In DC, it's resulted in the likes of Marion Barry being re-elected time and again, regardless of his various felonies.

Upright citizens of all races should be outraged. Juan Williams should be ashamed of himself.

Wrong ...

Submitted by Bodini on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 10:24am.

Wrong ... overcoming the race-card will occur when the majority get sick and damned tired of carrying the 5-decades-old Demwit created and supported dependent class across the bridge to the 21st century. Victims only become victors when they change the way they think.

Marion has been re-elected because DC is predominantly black and based on voting stats they are 95% Demwits.

But the rhetoric is hard to overcome.  How many years have we had failed socialist systems forced on the people of the world because they 'sound good'. 'Power to the People' type slogans have kept people poor, uneducated and indentured to governments for many generations because of the ability of politicians to use sentimental rhetoric to con money from tax payers to purchase votes using systemically false promises is a cycle that tends to last until there is a mass casualty (historically war) or the country collapses.

Newt says some great stuff.

Submitted by c5then on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 10:25am.

But then he shows himself with some other stuff. He is really not all for reducing the size of government to a more sustainable level, he just wants to spend the $3.5 trillion on different stuff.

Take his statement about Planned Parenthood.... He want's to defund PP and spend that money ($500 million) on adoption services. Now, I'm sorry, even thought that sounds like a better solution, where exactly in the Constitution does it give the federal government the authority to get involved in adoption services any more than they can get involved in medical proceedures?

Newt is a republican progressive.

President Obama The Food Stamp President

Submitted by Conservator on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 1:37pm.

I didn't see the woman who asked that question at black church in South Carolina, but I'll assume she was an African American. The majority of people receiving food stamps today are white in point of fact. Thus, I don't believe 'The Food Stamp President' can be associated with race. The statement regarding janitors did focus on the black community. I'm not sure if implemented how successful it will be, but at least I understand how some may consider Newt's comments on the topic as belittling.

And those "some" are members of the liberal elite, who believe they have to provide the cheese, instead of giving the poor the wherewithal and work ethic to earn the cheese on their own. IOW, using the liberals' own terminology (I think it was Hillary) keep the poor black community on the liberal plantation, where they belong, beholden to Democrats and continuing to pull the correct lever like Pavlov's dog (okay, I added that concept).
