Matthews Accuses GOP Strategist on MSNBC Primary Coverage Panel of Being a Romney Surrogate

Chris Matthews on Tuesday accused a Republican strategist participating in MSNBC's New Hampshire primary coverage of being a Mitt Romney surrogate.

Even more surprisingly, colleague Rachel Maddow quickly realized the absurdity of the accusation saying, "He's no surrogate" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

As the primary coverage ensued, Matthews asked former John McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt - present on the panel as the lone conservative - why Romney hasn't released his tax records.

Schmidt responded, "Well, you should ask the campaign why he won't."

Matthews shot back, "I'm asking its surrogate, you."

"Chris, I'm not a Romney surrogate," replied Schmidt.

Maddow quickly came to his defense saying, "He's no surrogate."

But Matthews was undeterred claiming, "Oh, come on. You like him. You want him to be president. Come on."

Truly ironic words coming from a man who almost four years ago after primary elections in numerous states talked about how Barack Obama gave him a thrill up his leg while shortly after the 2008 elections said it was his job to make Obama's presidency a success.

To now accuse a Republican strategist who's part of his network's primary coverage of being a surrogate for one of the candidates was the height of hypocrisy that even Maddow recognized.

Nice job, Chris!

"Is that you, Chris?"

"You look like Anthony Wiener whenever you say 'Obama.' I think that stain on your pants will come out."

*BTW, it's "lone conservative." A "loan conservative" is the one member on the House Banking Committee who actually wanted to strengthen the regulatory weapons to oversee Freddie and Ferdie.

it will get worse

Submitted by MidAmerica on Tue, 01/10/2012 - 10:36pm.

As obama's campaign falters in the coming election Chris will fall even further into madness. Eventually his eyes will roll back in his head as he claws feverishly at his skin trying to tear out the micro chips he knows that have been implanted there by evil Conservatives.

I would have laughed at Tweetie and said, "This coming from someone whose entire network is a surrogate for Obama."

Matthews must have a leaky valve or something

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 01/10/2012 - 11:31pm.

He gets more and more bizarre in his dialogue.

Earlier I heard him ask former PA Gov. Tom Ridge why his party (the GOP) always seems to have a "war ready to go" when they get into office.

Here he badgers a guest to explain why Romney hasn't released his tax returns.

It's funny and sad.

I really believe insects are eating Matthews' brain. He NEVER debates on the issues, but always goes for some underhanded, ad hominem character attack. Which he makes up out of whole cloth.

And for this he gets paid?

Poor little Chrissy

Submitted by Clemenza on Tue, 01/10/2012 - 11:55pm.

He's knows the "Eggplant in Chief" is in serious jepordy of not getting re-elected and he can barley contain his venom.

Message to the brass at MSNBC, . . . . take down the shower and cutain rods in Chris's dressing room. He is inching closer to being on 24 hour watch.

I don't remember ever knowing

I don't remember ever knowing anyone with so much obvious hatred seething inside him as Matthews. What a shallow person he is and what a miserable world he must live in.

Chris "Tingles" Matthews is

Submitted by TE on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 12:59am.

Chris "Tingles" Matthews is such a stupid fool that he doesn't even know that Steve Schmidt is not even a Republican.

Schmidt is the kind of "Republican" (i.e., non-Republican) that A-Mess-NBC only allows on its unwatched freakshows. Schmidt is as much a Republican as Kathleen Parker, David "I get a tingle up my leg looking at the crease in Obama's pants" Brooks, Matthew Dowd, Andrew Sullivan, convicted felon John Dean and dimwitted dingbat Meghan McCain are.

Clearly there is no one in his family who cares enough to do an intervention.

In the meantime Chris spirals further and further downward into Charly Sheen territory.

Oy

Submitted by Benson on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 6:58am.

Watched ten minutes of MSNBC right after Romney's speech and they were flippin' crazy. Schmidt was trying to play it nonpartisan in a room full of wingers and he came off as a factless clown among a bunch of pit bulls. Matthews has been throwing out 99% talking points for months in an effort to take down Romney. If Obama goes down the media that got him elected in 2008 will look even worse so they will be propping up Obama in 2012 just like 2008

If Matthews says it

Submitted by John21 on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 8:46am.

If "Tingle legs" "Obamalove" Matthews say it you know that there are no facts or truth attached to it. The man has no credibility, honesty or knowledge all he has is the DNC talking points and his manlove of Obama.

ha ha ha Chris - project much???

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
