News Anchors Support Wall Street Protests At Own Risk: They're Millionaires Too

By Noel Sheppard | October 11, 2011 | 10:51

As NewsBusters has been reporting, the anchors of the various broadcast news programs have enthusiastically thrown their support behind the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Given a report from CNN Money Monday that the protesters are planning on marching on the homes of New York's millionaires, some of these television personalities might want to think twice:

Organizers are planning a march on Tuesday that will visit the homes of JP Morgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) CEO Jamie Dimon, billionaire David Koch, hedge fund honcho John Paulson, Howard Milstein, and News Corp (NWSA, Fortune 500) CEO Rupert Murdoch.

The millionaires and billionaires are being targeted for what event organizers called a "willingness to hoard wealth at the expense of the 99%."

So far, protesters have not strayed too far from downtown, where a home base of sorts has been established at Zuccotti Park.

Tuesday's march -- organized by UnitedNY, the Strong Economy for All Coalition, the Working Families Party and New York Communities for Change -- will cover quite a bit of ground if successful.

To be sure, the leading television news personalities aren't in the rarified air of these mega-rich moguls. However, they certainly are part of the top one percent the protesters are railing against.

Consider for example ABC's Diane Sawyer who on Monday was so jubilant about the protests that she told her World News viewers the movement has spread to more than a thousand countries.

Given her wealth and income, you have to wonder why this makes her so happy. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Sawyer is worth $40 million with an annual salary of $12 million.

Over at NBC, Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, who on Friday compared the protests to the Arab Spring claiming it has historical comparisons, has a net worth of $30 million with an annual salary of $13 million.

Although only at the position for a few months, CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley has a net worth of $15 million with an annual salary of $4 million.

The evening broadcast anchors aren't the only one-percenters. Good Morning America anchor George Stephanopoulos has a net worth of $8 million with an annual salary of $6 million. Co-anchor Robin Roberts has a net worth of $14 million with an annual salary of $6 million. This Week host Christiane Amanpour has a net worth of $12.5 million with an annual salary of $2 million.

But that's chump change. Over at NBC, Today show host Matt Lauer has a net worth of $45 million with an annual salary of $17 million. Co-host Ann Curry's net worth is $10 million with an annual salary of $2 million.

Something else to consider, when musicians and record producers visit the protests, they're also potentially entering the lion's den.

Russell Williams and Kanye West went to Wall Street to lend their support Tuesday despite their net worths being $325 million and $70 million respectively.

So when all these rich media members gush and fawn over this movement, they should not only be cognizant of the hypocrisy.

They might also want to keep in mind they could some day be targets of the anti-rich anger at the heart of the protests.

Do they really think we're that stupid?

Submitted by Newsbubba on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 11:32am.

They just love to get "the masses" all worked up against their political enemies, thinking that the liberal view will be the winner.

What the dumb asses don't realize is that once the mob is out, and victorious, they are next on the menu.  It's sort of like kicking over a beehive.  There is no way anybody around the thing isn't going to get stung.

Wonder how thrilled they'll be if the communists win and several dozen of "the masses" are assigned by the "government" to move into their Madison Avenue apartments with them to share their wealth?  I'm betting that they won't be too thrilled, and wonder how this all went wrong.

Maybe they should read a book on communist revolutions and how well they turn out.  Better yet, they should curl up on their sofa overlooking NYC, and watch the old movie about the Bolshevik Revolution, Dr. Zhivago.  They can get a picture of how their lovely apartment will look with "the masses" moved in.

Not only are they millionaires, but they are classic examples of folks at the top making way more than those below them. The news operations have been continually axing people; ABC cleaned out a huge number a while ago--it often uses Skype instead of cameramen, who surely were part of the 99 percent. If they didn't make so much, they could have preserved more jobs.

It is sad, and these people are idiots. When my daughter went to college we discussed majors. We were very clear that her major had to teach her a specific skill or information that would give her employment, or lead to grad school with the same idea. When she wanted to go into teaching I said then you go to a state school. No way am I paying private school tuition for a job that is run by a union and your pay is no reflection on your ability or where you went to school.

People have to hold themselves accountable for their choices, especially in education.

I agree. Let's take rich people's money.

Submitted by VotersOfNY on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 3:13pm.

There are a lot of rich people who agree with Obozo and want to tax the rich and redistribute the money. Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Michael Moore, Warren Buffet, many movie stars and more. So why don't we oblige them?

Let's take a number, say 10 MILLION dollars. Let's take half of the net worth of anyone who has over 10 million dollars. Obama has maybe 11 million, we take 5.5 million of that. Pelosi has about 60 million so we take 30 million. Ah, the fat slob Michael Moore. He supposedly is worth about 50 million. How do you think he would like Obama taking 25 million of it? I bet he'd shut his big fat mouth real fast.

Then comes the big one, Warren Buffet. He is worth about 39 BILLION dollars. So Obama gets 20 BILLION dollars to spread around to the un-rich, you know those who aren't rich. Can you imagine Buffet agreeing with that? I can't.

Why hasn't anyone thought of this idea instead of taxing the rich, many of whom agree with Obama, let's just take the money up front. Think they'll still be shooting their mouths off to tax the rich. Doubt it, especially that fat tub of lard Moore. He couldn't survive on only 25 million. That isn't enough to feed that pig.

Hi

Submitted by coin of the realm on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 10:07pm.

I don't think it is anti-rich anger that is in anyway targeted at people as if they are enemies or combatants.

It is a frustration with the system's rules that have enabled, supported and often helped the super rich get that way while the rest of us fall behind. AND at the same time the very support systems that prevent people from starving or dying on the streets are being dismantled to pay for the various tax cuts, subsidies, open ended uncontested contracts and bailouts the rich have received.

Dont worry, they aren't gonna hurt the rich or even us. I think that guys like john Paulson can afford to pay a few more points of his income in taxes for the good of the country. You know, last year his cash compensation was $15,000,000,000. Why stick up for people like that while telling the masses to suck it up and suffer for the good of those few who are getting everything from the country and us?

And, if you don't see this monstrosity being supported by the likes of the NEA, SEIU, Soros, the President and the DNC as "anti-rich anger that is in anyway targeted at people as if they are enemies or combatants.", then you're either blind or extremely obtuse.  This is a bunch of thieves, plotting how they'll divide the take, once they manage to steal what someone else has worked for.

So, which are you, an active participant in the OWLS society, or just an operative for the DNC?

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

But there are other very rich people who are being lavished with attention and others attacked, Now why is that? Michael Moore, worth millions, Nancy Pelosi, 66 million, George Soros, the funder for these protests is a corporate fat cat worth billions. Harry Belafonte, millionaire, Kanya West, multimillionaire, Russel Simmons, corporate fat cat, Morgan Freeman, fat cat. How about Derek Jeter, A Rod, Koby Bryant, Mark Texera.? All multimillionaires but your beloved liberal media never talk about the LIBERAL corporate fat cats.

The majority of congressmen are millionaires. They consider themselves a seperate protected class from the ordinary working folks. Tis for thee not for me...attitude that we should be fighting because it is they who reap the benefits from coporate donations to their stashes and their re-election campaigns..

If the OWsLosers actually could use reason, they would see the hypocricy in their protests. The media is taking advantage of their disjointed " demands" and their supporters which make the protestors "useful idiots".

Indeed - perhaps it is time for an Occupy Main Street Media protest - OMSM.

Imagine, ABC's nightly news anchor gets paid $12 million a year, so that she can tell her audience that the OWS protests have spread to over 1,000 countries world wide - then, faced with a correction, blows it as well. This is all because she speaks as an activist, not a news person.
