Sawyer's Flub: Claims Wall Street Protests Have ‘Spread to More Than a Thousand Countries’

By Brent Baker | October 11, 2011 | 08:07

So enthused about promoting the far-left protests, ABC anchor Diane Sawyer on Monday night's World News championed “the Occupy Wall Street movement” by ludicrously claiming that “as of tonight, it has spread to more than 250 American cities, more than a thousand countries -- every continent but Antarctica.”

Protests against the wealthy in “thousands of countries,” including Cuba, China and every country in Africa? Per the U.S. State Department, however, there are only 195 nation states in the world, so Sawyer imagined five times as many protests as could possibly have occurred. (Video below)

She proceeded to advance the agenda of those protesting by running down statistics to illustrate income inequality: “So how much does the top one percent in this country earn? Well, on average their incomes, $1.1 million. Compare that to the bottom 90 percent, 100 million households. They earn an average of $31,000.” She fretted that since the 1980s, “the top one percent saw their incomes go up more than 11 times what the rest of America saw.”

(Audio: Matching MP3 audio clip)

[UPDATE: Cities, not countries. In the video of the October 10 World News, posted on ABCNews.com and usually drawn from the updated version prepared for the West coast, Sawyer hyped the protesters this way: “We’ll bring you up to date on the protesters, that Occupy Wall Street movement. As of tonight, it has spread to more than 250 American cities and more than a thousand cities around the world -- every continent but Antarctica.”]

CBS and NBC on Monday night once again ran full stories on the protesters, providing day after day coverage they never offered the Tea Party.

On the NBC Nightly News, Mara Schiavocampo tried to mainstream the crowds by exploiting kids, beginning her story: “Today demonstrations continued in cities across the country, including here in New York where protesters were joined by some new, younger voices. From school, to the streets. On day 24 of the Occupy Wall Street protests, demonstrators were joined by a group of students on their day off.”

Schiavocampo then showed a bite of a little girl who pleaded: “I want to make the world to be a better place.”

From anchor Diane Sawyer on the Monday, October 10 World News on ABC:

Speaking of Wall Street, we thought we’d bring you up to date on those protesters, the Occupy Wall Street movement. As of tonight, it has spread to more than 250 American cities, more than a thousand countries -- every continent but Antarctica.

And of course they are calling for the one percent of richest Americans to find more ways to help the 99 percent and we wondered what's the gulf between them tonight? So how much does the top one percent in this country earn? Well, on average their incomes, $1.1 million. Compare that to the bottom 90 percent, 100 million households. They earn an average of $31,000.

And what happened to that top one percent since the end of the recession, these tough times? Well, the wealthiest one percent saw incomes increase by half a percentage point while everyone else saw their incomes drop by the same amount. And this is on top of what's been happening since the 1980s where the top one percent saw their incomes go up more than 11 times what the rest of America saw.

Numbers giving rise to some of those impulses, like Molly Catchpoll, the young girl who decided to organize a petition against Bank of America for raising fees on its customers now....

Incite

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 9:30am.

When the mentally deranged nut job shot Giffords in the head last January, the media and liberals falsely built up a story how that person was incited to shoot her because of the message of the Tea Party. But what we see going on right now is real actual incitement by the MSM and liberal groups against people who have achieved something with their lives and gotten wealthy through that effort.

When some "rich" person's house gets burned down, or some rich person get's beat up or killed, or actual riots and looting breaks out, I'm guessing that the MSM will draw absolutely no connection between the constant drumbeat that Obama and his kind and their mouthpieces have kept up for the last three years regarding evil "banksters" and evil corporations and evil "rich people".

The thing that gets me the most is that I still hear the "evil bankster" and evil Wall Street and evil corporations message from a lot of politicians and so called leaders who proclaim themselves to be conservatives. Pitting Americans against Americans in this way is disgusting.

Isn't interesting how the media has ignored a new study...

Submitted by Conservator on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 12:08pm.

...released yesterday by Sentier Research. I guess the elitists lefties don't care for data that demonstrates wages were better for Americans during the Bush recession than after Obama's stimulus plan, obamacare and Dodd/Frank.

Household Income Trends During the Recession and Economic Recovery - Monday, October 10, 2011 http://www.sentierresearch.com/pressreleases/SentierResearch_PressReleas...

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the findings which indicates incomes for Americans have dropped more after the recession under Obama compared to the actual recession when Bush was president. Below are some highlights of the study:

"...First, it examines household income trends during the recent recession lasting from December 2007 to June 2009, and two full years of the “economic recovery” beginning in June 2009 up through June 2011. It shows that there has been no recovery in terms of household income. To the contrary, it shows that median household income has continued to decline up through June 2011.

Highlights include the following:

  • Real median annual household income has fallen significantly more during the economic recovery period from June 2009 to June 2011 than during the recession lasting from December 2007 to June 2009.

  • During the recession, real median annual household income fell by 3.2 percent, from $55,309 in December 2007 to $53,518 in June 2009. During the economic recovery, real median annual household income fell by an additional 6.7 percent, from $53,518 in June 2009 to $49,909 in June 2011.

  • For the entire period from December 2007 to June 2011, real median annual household income has declined by 9.8 percent. A decline of this magnitude represents a significant reduction in the American standard of living..."

A liberal count

Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 1:24pm.

Here's a partial list of those 1000 countries that Sawyer mentioned:

Korea, North Korea, South Korea, America, North America, Central America, South America, Europe, European Union, Asia, East Asia, Middle East, Far East, Kampuchea, Cambodia, Africa, Palestine, West Bank, Bush's Iraq, Iraq, Bush's Afghanistan, Afghanistan, well, you get the idea.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution

Unless you're a fetus. The US Supreme Court

Or Anwar al-Awlaki.

Lies.

Submitted by Morganfrost on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 2:05pm.

Leaving aside the obvious nonsense (number of countries, etc.), the top 1% do not, in fact, make that much money, nor even anywhere near half that much money. The figure the ditz gave for the top 1% is probably accurate for the top 0.1%, so she's only off by a factor of ten.

But, typically, since this is "The News," the ditz reading it is not obliged to cite sources, nor is she likely to be held accountable for anything she says, since it's all intended to seve a "higher" goal (keep Democrats in office).

By the way-- the ditz should have added (in the interests of full disclosure) that she is a part of that tiny little group. Perhaps we should look into her tax returns and see if she's paying her "fair share."

Movie Quote

Submitted by djaymick on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 2:42pm.

This reminds me of the movie "Billy Madison". The take away quote that applies to Diane Sawyer should be, " Ms. Sawyer, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

SAWYER - TIME TO RETIRE - you are not too good to be replaced

Submitted by Frances Assisi on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 3:56pm.

It is time for each of the network stations' anchors to retire - get some new blood in there.
If Sawyer, with all her years of experience cannot think faster on her feet, and cannot instaneously talk or discern wrong information information presented to her - SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG - PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY.

The public has had more than enough of these holier than thou, Potus supporting (every action - no criterial applied) talking heads. They support the Potus with no investigation of the facts, positions, supporters, aides, - whatever and everything he propounds or proposes is accepted, then touted on TV and in Print.

What ever happened that each story had to be verified by at least 2 sources? That verification has gone by the wayside, but oh, there is always time to apologize ad nauseum, again on primetime and primetime stations.

NO accountability, No job - wow what a concept.

Liberal Liar

Submitted by Schofield Kid on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 4:48pm.

I know damn well these filthy hippies, anarchists, whatever, haven't infiltrated 250 American Cities with any significant numbers. I'll cut her some slack on the 1,000 countries and assume she meant cities, but that's still a wild exaggeration.

Remember how they went out of their way to discount the numbers that showed up at Tea Party rallies? In particular they actually tried to count individuals at the Washington Mall on an aerial photo to dispute the numbers put out by the Park Police. Yet with these scumbags--just the opposite. I think the libs have been extremely jealous of the Tea Party for some time while constantly trying to diminish its significance.

57 U.S. States. 1,000 countries on the planet. Yep, these people are really educated and tuned in.

Nancy Pelosi - "Each week we don't pass the stimulus, 500 million Americans lose their jobs." (There are approximately 312 million Americans total).

Barack Obama - He's "visited all 57 states."

Now Diane Sawyer has no idea how many nations there are in the world.

No surprise - Liberals love to invent statistics, no one ever challenges their dumb statements. Duh....

Be sure to say "hi" to the great O(ne) next time your private jets are up on Martha's Vineyard. Oh, wait, the private jets are not going to be allowed anymore are they ? Oh, I misunderstood your position - it only applies to OTHERS and their jets, correct ? We'll see your tail numbers there soon I'm sure, but only after the next vacation where it's warm - it's been 2 weeks or more so I feel your due and should take some R+R because the least time you're in DC the least amount of damage you can do.

Hey Diane

Submitted by CradleofIdiocy on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 5:05am.

Hey Diane,

I'll tell you what the "gulf between them" is.

If you talk to these protestors, they personify the stupid, lazy, entitlement mentality, worthless American who doesn't want to work and wants Big Daddy and Big Mommy government to take care of them from cradle to grave. In other words, they want a parent, not a government.

There's a simple way they can become financially well-off themselves.

Create a product or service people need or want. Or, get a job for someone who does.

It's really that simple.

Oh, and you don't start out on the top. Many of us spend our entire lives working our way up from the bottom, and are happy to do so.

Signed,

The American Majority
