Cain Responds to Belafonte and West: 'The Only Tactic They Have to Try and Intimidate Me and Shut Me Up Is to Call Me Names'
By Noel Sheppard | October 11, 2011 | 00:28
As NewsBusters reported, Harry Belafonte and Princeton Professor Cornel West said some disgraceful things about Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain Monday.
Appearing on Fox News's "Hannity" show, Cain replied, "The only tactic that they have to try and intimidate me and shut me up is to call me names" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
SEAN HANNITY, HOST: Now you said perhaps somewhat you were a bit of a prophet, looking into your crystal ball, that, you know, now that you are surging in the polls you said there's a bulls-eye on your back. I saw tonight that Harry Belafonte said that Herman Cain is a totally false bad apple in the black community. And Cornel West said the following. I want you to watch this.
HERMAN CAIN, REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Alright.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
SUZANNE MALVEAUX, CNN: What do you make of what Herman Cain said? He did acknowledge that racism exists, but he says, you know, it doesn't matter that much. That more of it is about actually working hard and making opportunities happen for yourself.
CORNEL WEST, Class of 1943 university professor, Princeton University: Well one, black people have been working hard for decades. I think he needs it get off the symbolic crack pipe and acknowledge that the evidence is overwhelming.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HANNITY: Get off the symbolic crack pipe? You are a totally false bad apple in the black community? Don't you find those things offensive?
CAIN: Yeah, I do find them offensive. Okay. Let me respond to Professor West first. That's the difference between someone who has spent their life in academia and someone who has spent their life in the real world. I've been in the real world. He's been in academia. So he's back on this symbolic stuff. As far as Harry Belafonte’s comment, look, I left the Democrat plantation a long time ago. And all that they try to do when someone like me -- and I'm not the only black person out there that shares these conservative views -- the only tactic that they have to try and intimidate me and shut me up is to call me names, and, and this sort of thing. It just simply won't work. Professor West has been in academia too long. He is out of touch with the real world.
Readers are advised to review "CNN Hosts Leftists Saying Cain Should Get Off 'Crack Pipe'" and "Belafonte Attacks Cain: 'A Bad Apple' 'So Denied Intelligence' 'I Don’t Think Prayers Were Created For Him'" to better understand the level of vitriol Cain was defending himself against.
Just imagine what he'll have to put up with from folks like these if he actually wins the nomination and faces Barack Obama next November.

He always has the correct response. As long as he sticks with his principles and doesn't get involved in petty political fights with other candidates, he will do well. It will be so refreshing when we actually nominate and then have a president that isn't a career politician.

Add Herman Cain to the list of "not the right kind" of African-Americans. Already on the list are Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Walter E. Williams, Clarence Thomas, Delroy Murdock and Ward Connerly.

Let's make him proud in 2012*I think that you can view both Belafonte and Cornel West
Submitted by TheHistorian on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 4:21am.
I think you can view Belafonte, West (Cornel), Sharpton, etc as being the Judas goats for the black people. They will lead them to the slaughterhouse of Democrat politics, escaping the slaughter themselves in exchange for betraying the others. This is very evident with the vile things they say about Herman Cain, a man who grew up black and has made something of himself, and Barack Obama, the man that never grew up and is only where he is because the Democrats made him out to be something he isn't. It is a real tragedy when black people have people like Michael Vick and Snoop Doggy Dog as their heroes and revile men who have achieved greatness like Messrs. Cain and Clarence Thomas.
I would bet today that the black politicians would have similar things to say about Booker T. Washington and all of the legendary black people that have given great contributions to this country. If they ever figure out that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was really a Republican, imagine what they might have to say about him.
Herman, continue to be above the contemptuous behavior of Belafonte, Cornel West, etc. God be with you.

The plantation owners must be leaning really heavily on the "black community" to go after Cain like this.
While I'm still harboring reservations about Cain himself, I find it not a little comical that they are going this far and as MB said above, he's not fitting the stereotype, nay, he's defying it, therefore he's defying the masters. And at the same time, the overseers, like those in the Congressional Black Caucus(Waters, Lewis, etc), are trying like hell to honor their masters' wishes.
Who said slavery was over in this country? I'm not seeing it.

Yes, they have been working hard. Cain himself is a shinning example of a black person working hard for decades and, by doing so, achieving things on his own, which makes me wonder just what the hell West is talking about.
Cain is telling others that they can achieve just as much as he did (or more), simply by applying themselves just as he did. So, Mr. Professor, just what do you see wrong with that? YOU just proved Cain's point succinctly. WHY are you so reluctant to acknowledge it?

Herman Caine has been a favorite of mine since the beginning. He refuses to associate himself with black men who still see themselves as victims instead of achievers. You can thank that victim mindset on the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. It's terrible what just those two have done to the mindset of the modern black man. Herman Caine is no victim, and he's an enormous achiever. I think he may just achieve winning the nomination. I'd like to see that happen.

To the black community - look beyond the rhetoric, the accusations and promises. For 50 years the blacks have been a loyal voter for the Democrats and are your schools better off? Are your inner cities better off? Are there less blacks in jail? Have the drugs and violence been taken out of your neighborhoods? Don't you believe you deserve better than what your loyalty has bought for the last 50 years?
